- This is from the first Zevon appearance on Letterman. He also played “The Overdraft” which I plan uploading sometime in the near future.
Well, he went down to dinner in his Sunday best
"Excitable boy," they all said
And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest
"Excitable boy," they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy
He took in the 4 A.M. show at the Clark
"Excitable boy," they all said
And he bit the usherette's leg in the dark
"Excitable boy," they all said
Well, he's just an excitable boy
(Ooh, ah-ooh)
(Ooh-ooh, excitable boy)
(Ooh, ah-ooh)
(Ooh-ooh, excitable boy)
He took little Suzie to the Junior Prom (Ooh, ah-ooh)
"Excitable boy," they all said (Ooh-ooh, excitable boy)
And he raped her and killed her, then he took her home (Ooh, ah-ooh)
"Excitable boy," they all said (Ooh-ooh, excitable boy)
Well, he's just an excitable boy
After ten long years, they let him out of the home
"Excitable boy," they all said (Ooh-ooh, excitable boy)
And he dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones
"Excitable boy," they all said (Ooh-ooh, excitable boy)
Well, he's just an excitable boy
(Ooh, ah-ooh)
(Ooh-ooh, excitable boy)
(Ooh, ah-ooh)
(Ooh-ooh, excitable boy)
(Ooh, ah-ooh)
(Ooh-ooh, excitable boy)
(Ooh, ah-ooh)
(Ooh-ooh, excitable boy)
(Ooh, ah-ooh)
If any of you are wondering why I’m putting asterisks in some of the lyrics it’s just to prevent this comment from being removed…

I got counselled in the Army for using this song as a running cadence.
Worth it! 👍
First and foremost, thank you so very much for your service. Second, you have officially achieved legend status for having this as a running cadence. I raise my glass to you! CHEERS!
My mom's boyfriend was in the Coast Guard and he LOVED Zevon.😊
If this was a heavy metal band using this lyrics...they wouldn't have been on tv.
Wow! Genius!
A song about how nobody listens to the lyrics anymore. Genius under the eaves.
R.I.P Warren Zevon one of my all time favorites ever.
Letterman loved Warren Zevon
Dave has lobbied hard to get Warren into the RRHOF. Hopefully, that dream will come true.
@garyrasberryjr.552 after another shit rappers are inducted.🤬
All your posts of ZEVON are the best!
EXCITABLE BOY
Only ZEVON could do the lyrics - crazy dude!
Always, Thanks for the lyrics.
You are missed, WARREN ZEVON
RIP 🙏🏻🙏🏽🙏👏🏻👏🏽👏
BASS SOUND AWESOME
Look at a family picture of Paul Schaeffer - dude in red sweater, keyboardist and head of Lettermans' band - and he looks EXACTLY like his dad. Not meaning to be, it is hilarious. It's so uncanny that it sticks with you.
The original World's Most Dangerous Band: Paul Shaffer (keyboards), Hiram Bullock (guitar/vocals), Steve Jordan (drums/vocals) and Will Lee (bass)
Dave really liked Warren Zevon
He may have been Dave’s favorite artist, for good reason too!
@@ZevonArchive
Letterman and Jerry Garcia were good friends and from Garcia came a plethora of good artists on Daves' show. Hence, Warren Zevon.
"Best friend my music ever had"--Warren to David Letterman
Just recently saw the vid where Dave “teaches” Jerry some basic chords and strumming patterns. Jerry “complains” that pressing the strings hurts his fingertips, and Dave reassures him that developing callouses will solve that. Priceless!
Miss him....
Ditto
Excellent
Thank you for posting this. Luvit!!
I Crack up watching Paul
Classic!!
2:18 (to the end) seems better with the guitar, drums, and Hammond B3 Organ than studio in my opinion.
Couldn’t agree more. The whole band shines on this version. Studio is all horns and backup vocals.
Agree 100% the sax always had too much of a john candy comedy sound to it this version slays
Brilliant satire of the "boys will be boys" mindset.
Cancer got very talented man.werwolves of london
Man did TH-cam take down your videos of the complete interview? :(
Yeah
@@ZevonArchive that sucks. Do you still got them? Would you share them?
@@salovel23 You can watch most of them here: th-cam.com/video/QA8iHRNX2eg/w-d-xo.html
wow. sso glad you asked.
im at a loss, for quite some time now,
as to what became of zevon’s first visit? and why. it was classic.
Who’s the drummer? Steve Jordan?
Iam pretty sure it's Steve Jordan...
Will Lee is ripping the shit on bass too
I believe that's Hiram Bullock on guitar.
He was a bit of an ' excitable boy ' himself was Mr Zevon ...wasn't he ?
... i remember when my kids got me "EB" for Xmas, and in my mind the cover was a plate of food with a revolver laidf across it (i guess i've always assumed that was a first version of the cover, later changed) but i have never seen it since... was i wrong, or was it an inner liner?
The plate of food with a revolver laid across it has always been the record sleeve, never the cover.
@@ZevonArchive ... i appreciate the answer, @ZA, i had come to think That was the case... any chance anyone has a copy available?
Best of luck in your search, Chris. I couldn’t part with my copy, even though it has a skip in “Johnny Strikes Up the Band.”
..was more hoping someone might post a picture of the picture on the inner sleeve @@tjwolfe77 ✌
Would this song have been on tv if it was a metal band? No, they would have been banned. I love Zevon but I, also, recognize the double standard. Wow. Just wow.
What if Stephen King was a piano player?
sync is off!
Sounds good to me
It's excitable
Would have been great to have Linda on backup 🥲
