A pretty cool coincidence (spoilers ahead for 2061: odyssey three): the process by which a living person is converted into pure consciousness by the monolith is called "Echoing", and of course this song is called "Echoes"
I once had the opportunity to experience this in a theater that was closed for repairs. My friend's dad worked there and arranged it for a small group. It was incredible.
Having done this manually myself on VHS and CD, I know exactly the sync points to look for which illustrate good sync/bad sync. This is the best sync I've seen on TH-cam. The rest are really poorly done. If coming out of the tunnel into the spiral arms going into the bass-heavy groove, and the eye blinks against the guitar squeaks don't sync, it's a non-starter. This matches both points better than anyone's.
Whenever the song reaches 14:30, onwards, it just gives me a feeling of sadness, nostalgia, calmness, happiness, a feeling i can't explained, i have listened to this song for more than a 100 times, but it still gives me these feelings, this speaks alot about how extraordinary Pink Floyd is, we will never have another Pink Floyd, EVER, I'm just happy now as a 16 year old boy, i found pink floyd
Pink Floyd’s music was really unique and unrivaled, that’s why. I certainly felt sad, nostalgic, and melancholic when I see this sequence with “Echoes” playing; without it, the movie was just emotionless and detached. Pink Floyd evokes raw emotions while Stanley Kubrick didn’t.

This is the way this sync is supposed to be done, high quality video and the music starts at the correct time. You can tell at the end when the old man turns around right as the lyrics start back up. Well done, it’s a shame some other versions have more views because this is the definitive version.
Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves The echo of a distant time comes willowing across the sand And everything is green and submarine And no one showed us to the land And no one knows the where's or why's But something stirs and something tries Starts to climb towards the light Strangers passing in the street By chance two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can? Every time that beautiful piano and guitar played it had drawn me more and more into it. Lots of emotions went into this song. I cant think of any other song that stands out more than this does. Wow i swear to you as i was watching this for the hundreth time i screen capped that part for an ig story. Im gonna sync it up with that part of the song.
I agree that this is the best sync of all the other "2001 pink floyd" videos on TH-cam. The way I tell is that the proper place for the monolith visions (AKA the Special FX) to begin is after the vocals end on the second verse around the five minute mark. That way the long instrumental section takes up the entirety inside the monolith and the vocals begin again when Dave turns around and crosses the threshhold @ 19:11. Also, as someone else mentioned, all the blinks are on beat. All time marks achieved! This is really spot on, friend! Good on ya! really appreciate your attention to detail.

This and the Dawn of Man scene having originally been scored would be fun to have a re-edited version of the film with. There also is a Dawn of Man with Ummagumma sync up. It possibly is a perfect movie, but this would be a cool alternate version. This song also fits well with the story. It's about the evolution of humans, and the song is about the beginnings in the ocean.
In reality it was Kubrick who said no to Pink Floyd, but when Atom Heart Mother came out he called them back because he wanted to use it for A Clockwork Orange, and Waters out of revenge said no.Meddle and therefore Echoes came out only after Atom Heart Mother, but at the time of 2001 Pink Floyd were still a psychedelic band, the "prog" turning point only came with Atom Heart Mother. AND It's unlikely that at the time of 2001 they had already refined their "prog" sound while releasing psychedelic records, which suggests that this Sync is nothing more than a giant coincidence
@@giuseppecognome3647 Americans can be so pissy. Kubrick shot himself in the foot saying no to Pink Floyd. I guess it is that ugly American arrogance in which they like to think they are the best at everything.
This is great! I'm glad and grateful that I happened to pick this version as other commenters have stated some other versions are not synchronized exactly like this one is. . I am in my early forties and lreally dug the fact that my Pops was blown away when he saw this film in a theater back in 1968. He also really dug the 1972 version Solaris which I have not yet seen although the 2002 version is pretty decent to me starring George Clooney as the main character. Lastly if I may be so humble as to suggest playing Echoes at a well mixed volume setting along with the film's standard audio track is quite satisfying.
I just listened to this for the first time and I am wondering was this song inspired by 2001? The fact that the song is just as long as the scene feels too big to be a coincidence though that’s just me.
How many toilets appear in 2001: A Space Odyssey? Two. Once during Dr. Floyd's trip to the Moon after eating from the suckable food tray he is seen carefully reading the instructions for the zero gravity toilet and then again during this scene. At the 16:45 mark there is clearly a toilet with a cloth cover lid and even a button on the wall to initiate the flush cycle.
I believe those arent unnecessary details, it fits with the themes of evolution of 2001 In space humans are learning to "live" all over again, for example the stewardess struggling to walk on the spaceship, like a baby learning to walk and Dr Floyd even having to learn how to crap and eat in space. Basically the entire space station/moon section is showing how humans are starting to learn to "live" again and adapt in space And when Dave is about to enter the next step of evolution, the toilet appears again, probably signifying Dave will have to learn to "live" all over again in his new "ascended" form I'm probably wrong and overanalyzing because to be honest its really fucking absurd but I saw an interesting connection there.
He was gonna use it for Clockwork Orange, not 2001. either way, the band refused and Roger Waters stated that it was the biggest regret turning Stanley Kubrick down

Woah! What if... there was a music video for this song about exploring an underground ocean on Europa... or maybe the life that is there. Maybe... holy crap... that would be so cool!
This synch makes so much more sense. 1. The Floyd had done movie soundtracks, they knew what to do 2. They explicitly said they wanted to do the score for this film 3. Despite Waters' insistence to the contrary, many of their lyrics had to do with space including early Echoes "planets face to face" 4. The synchs are pretty basic - four parts of the music synched very closely with the four parts of this last 23 minutes so its not like technology wasn't there for them 5. Didn't Waters have 2001: playing on a screen for his 1999 tour? edit: but knowing what I know how this song was constructed - 24 pieces of music eventually coming together, playing it live for months this like Dark Side was not intentionally made to synch up with any movie
PF actually wanted to contribute to the soundtrack for this film - but Kubrick was not interested at that time - later on Kubrick apparently showed some interest in using some part of "Atom Heart Mother" for his 1971 film "A Clockwork Orange" - most accounts say Kubrick called Roger Waters and said he’d like to use Floyd’s music, but he couldn’t specify what he planned to do, and wanted to retain the right to use the suite however he liked. That wasn’t good enough for Waters, who’s said to have told him, “Right, you can’t use it.”

Come streaming in on sunlight wings

edit: but knowing what I know how this song was constructed - 24 pieces of music eventually coming together, playing it live for months this like Dark Side was not intentionally made to synch up with any movie
Nailed it, thank you!
David at the end of the travel sequence "And I am you and what I see is me..."
Rick too!
@@1Latettaja1 I was talking about the character "David" at the end of the movie where he sees different stages of his older and younger self but I'm always game to tip my hat to Mr. Gilmour as well 😉✌️
