    Most drummers are familiar with quarter, eighth, sixteenth, and thirty-second notes (the note values), as well as our different subdivisions such as triplets and maybe even sextuplets... But what about playing groups of five? Today Stephen Taylor is going to show you how to play quintuplets and apply them in a musical setting.
    If you've never played quintuplets, it's gonna feel weird at first! It takes time to become familiar with the phrasing, so take it slow and really internalize the sound and feel.

    This could be interpreted as a 5 over 4 (or 4 against 5) polyrhythimc fill as well. Very interesting for sure, thanks for the idea!

      Stephen Taylor he Stephen I think your a really good drummer! But I was gonna ask if you can make a drum cover of a really good song that's underrated, it's called, a love of your own by the average white band. It's a really tight song if u listen to it haha!! And there is only one drum cover of the song and I think your better than him. So if you can please do it haha! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

    Sounds incredible man. Been drumming literally my entire life and I love to watch random lessons like these that introduce techniques that I either have forgotten or never tried. Adds more to my creative arsenal. A bit trickier than I expected, took me a few tries to get it right! Thanks man

    I don't play drums at all, I was just looking for an interesting new type of subdivision to incorporate into my guitar vocabulary. This more than delivered :) Thank you for the lesson! Nice grooves.

    very well explained! think the most difficult part is to find the right context to apply this subdivision and get a good musical feeling from it. Anika uses U-Ni-Ver-Si-Ty for the counting,works really well.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bea Rodriguez Yea, practical application is the hard part with a subdivision like quints. You can go listen to this song th-cam.com/video/xw0MPga-vEE/w-d-xo.html and going out of the first chorus I play a variation of this drum fill. I thought it gave a cool "unstable" vibe for that section of the song. But it is very close to this fill and pattern and it's used in the context of a drum fill.

    The jump from #1 to #2 is where most people fail. I'd recommend playing 4/4 grooves entirely in quintuplets (4x5) until you are really familiar with where all 5 beats fall before switching between 8th/16th notes and quintuplets. Also, counting in 8th notes doesn't help imho as the off-beat falls between the 3rd and 4th quintuplet and is sort of non-existent in a quintuplet feel.

      BRC yea, not a common subdivision used in popular music so it can sound strange. I understand quintuplets and all but I gotta say, I'm just not a fan. I've used them in certain situations don't get me wrong but most of the time, they're not needed. Super cool video though. Nice basic one to get people started.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know what, I agree with you. They've become the "hot" topic for whatever reason but I've been a working drummer since age 16...and I can count on one hand the number of times I was able to pull them out on a gig in a musical way (and those were in jazz settings where we were going out quite a bit). But, there have been some pretty hip pop applications in the past where players snuck them in, intentionally or unintentionally.
      Agreed with you though...a fun thing to expand your rhythmic capabilities but one that will not (often) be used on the band stand. Glad you dug the lesson!

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, not often used. But, we're drummers and our job is time. It's helped me over the years to dive in to lesser used subdivisions like this one to improve other areas of my playing. The music should always dictate what we do...ygo listen to this song th-cam.com/video/xw0MPga-vEE/w-d-xo.html and going out of the first chorus I play a variation of this drum fill. I thought it gave a cool "unstable" vibe for that section of the song. But it is very close to this fill and pattern and it's used in the context of a drum fill.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's up to you to decide how to use them musically. I can point out multiple players that use them in songs with great success...Tony Williams for one. But it's all about HOW you use them. This is simply a lesson to help you work through them in your practice time. The musical application is up to you and depends on the musical situation.

      LIke a B0Ss 112 Quints aren't for everyone and they're def not for every situation. But they're fun to work on in your practice time to expand your rhythmic abilities. If you want to hear this fill (slightly varied) I used it in a song for my original project Bellodrone. I thought it gave a feeling of "unstableness" at that point in the song. And I think it fits. If instruments were involved in this, it would be a totally different mix. 100% agree with you. But, since they're not, we're able to really use the tools at hand in the mix to bring out the richness of the drums. Mixing for a band setting and mixing for a solo drum setting are two completely different things. Good point to make
