  • In this video, I'll demonstrate how to create a dramatic portrait using three different types of umbrella modifiers. These versatile tools not only add depth and separation but also showcase the affordability and ease of use that umbrellas bring to professional photography setups.
    First, what is an umbrella light modifier?
    --
    An umbrella light modifier refers to an umbrella used in studio photography to modify and control the light from a light source, such as a flash or continuous light. It typically consists of a fabric stretched over a frame that can be positioned between the light source and the subject. Umbrella modifiers come in different types, such as reflective and shoot-through umbrellas:
    1. *Reflective Umbrella:* This type reflects the light back towards the subject, providing a soft and diffused light.
    2. *Shoot-Through Umbrella:* Here, the light source shines through the umbrella's translucent material, creating a softer, more dispersed light.

    💡Lighting (3)
    (1) Main Light: A medium silver umbrella positioned to the left of the subject, closed down to control light spill and create a more concentrated, defined light on the subject's face. This umbrella is used without diffusion to maintain a specular, crisp quality suitable for a dramatic portrait.
    (2) Hair Light: A medium-sized umbrella with diffusion, positioned behind and above the subject ("boomed out"), aimed to provide a "kiss" of light atop of the subject's hair. This umbrella provides a softer, more even light for separation and a classic hair light effect.
    (3) Background Light: A small shoot-through umbrella positioned behind the subject, aimed at the background. This umbrella has a bit of diffusion and also bounces some light back towards the subject, enhancing the overall lighting setup and creating a gradient effect on the background.

    Good and important information about the benefits of umbrellas. Sometimes I feel like they don't get enough appreciation from the pro level photographers. Me personally I love them.

    Umbrellas are essentially soft boxes without front diffusion and soft boxes are essentially umbrellas with front diffusion.
    Umbrellas on a boom are essentially light bounced off a ceiling.
    Add in some differences in shape that affect how wide the light spreads or the need to have something or somebody to hold a reflector like a $4 sheet of foam board from walmart, you can get the same diffusion and bounce until have the chance to get specified equipment.

    Great info as always. Thanks for that. Question for you. It seems that lately you are using the RF 24-105 f/2.8 as opposed to the f/4 version which you were previously using. Since you are setting it at f/8 and above, I was wondering why you made the change? I also have the F4 version but I typically shoot with an RF 28-70 F2. I also shoot with an old adapted EF 85 mm f/1.2 but more often than not, I don't have enough room to get get far enough back for a full body shot when shooting in smaller studios or indoors. Thanks!

    • @lindsayadlerphoto
      @lindsayadlerphoto  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I've switched over the the 2.8 in general. (a) its a bit sharper (b) If I want to be able to go to 2.8 I can, and if not, its fine. I mostly retired my f4

      @@lindsayadlerphoto Ah ok. Thanks! I was *thinking* it might be image quality. I know after using the F2 it really made the F4 pale in comparison. And a full extra stop never hurts. Thanks again!

    Thanks Lindsey. I wasn’t paying attention , but you said something about tether tools cable. Have they improved their product? Initially , I liked, but now I find them struggling with Nikon Z8 & Z9’s along with Fuji GFX 100ii

      @lindsayadlerphoto  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, hmmm. I can't really speak to that. I think it is the same, but they do have a new longer cable I've been using that has two boosters and I've found good luck with that one.
