Thanks for this, as someone who's first MK game played as a kid was actually Shaolin Monks, I did not know Survival Mode existed, didn't know you could play AS LITERALLY ANY CHARACTER either as I thought it stopped at the bosses, needs a remaster! :)
I loved this game. Played the heck out of it. Loved how you could unlock Scorpion and Sub-Zero and play the campaign with them and their moves. Always wanted a remaster.
The writing in this game is so bad but everything else? Damn near perfection. As far as MK games go where you pick it up and press buttons, this is the best MK game ever still. Incredible music, peak dark atmosphere, beautiful realization and recreation of iconic environments, a lot of the character designs in the game are among their respective characters' best.... There is so much to love about Shaolin Monks
MK Shaolin Monks was my childhood and also the game that made me fall in love with the franchise. i remember i played the game everyday looking for secrets and got 89% completion without any guides because we were too poor to afford a computer with internet. good times.
this is one of those games I wish I hadn't passed, can't remember what reason why I didn't pick it up on release despite being really into Mortal Kombat at the time.
Shaolin Monks was my introduction to the MK series when i was 8 years old... I remember i used to be scared of that opening cutscene and then when i played it with my brother i just fell in love. It's so sad that the only way to play this game is through emulation since it hasn't been re-released outside of the PS2 and OG Xbox. A remake or remaster would be a dream come true for me.
Reptile's design in MK: SM is still one of the best looks that he's had throughout the MK games. They even made his Shaolin Monks outfit his main costume in MK: Armageddon, while his Deadly Alliance costume being made as his alternate costume. 16:17 is what I wish they would have implemented from the start: playing as all the roster characters like Reptile, Baraka or Kano in the main storyline.
I missed this when it came out and always thought it looked absolutely great. I wish MK would keep expanding into different game genres. I love hanging out in the MK world.
Never thought about how funny it is that Liu Kang was like three feet away from his friend Johnny nearly getting his head bit off but prioritizing Bruce Lee taunting Shang
When I was a kid I found an infinite king lao loop on the first ogre boss with a dive kick which let you stack the combo until the boss was dead, giving a TON of XP at the end of the kill, letting you start the game at a really high level, it was great
Probably my favourite game for the Playstation 2. Baraka kills a monk in 6 different ways, then hrows his lifeless corpse towards the player. Kung Lao: "Are you okay?" 😂😂😂
I beat this game on multi-player when I was younger.....by myself...because I wanted so badly to unlock everything and didn't have anyone else to play with. It's a reason I love this game.
if these were to be released today it'd be an additional $24.99 to play as sub-zero or scorpion, but not both. Both would be $39.99 (you save ten dollars folks, WHAT A STEAL)
That final fight with Shao Kahn it's no joke, I remember playing with my brother and we got destroyed so bad, once we even glitched the game, we died while reaching the halfway cinematic and both cinematic tried to play at the same time, it was very trippy, it felt so nice when we finally got it
What’s crazy is mortal kombat has the reputation to the Point where remaking this or just another go at it wouldn’t even be a risk. If done right and have an online mode it’d be an instant classic!
I honestly liked this game more than GoW1 (both were released in 2005). The gameplay was so much more fluid and you had more variety thanks to unlockable characters... Nothing beats DMC3 and PoP:WW though 😅
With the many *many* playthroughs i had as a kid, i think i only ever beat the final boss once. My favorite thing to do was hit an enemy with an environmental death trap or some other killing blow at the same time that p2 initiated a fatality so it would bug out the fatality animation. If kung lao chopped a guys head off before the fatal, they wouldnt have a head while being fatalitied. Good times.
This game is my barometer for what the new 3D Streets of Rage can be. I know people are down bad on that game after Streets 4 but if it plays even remotely like this, I'll be stoked.
The most annoying thing is they Ed knows how badly people want this game to at least be rereleased or better yet remade but all we get is teasing mentioning it every few years.
The game that truly got me into the franchise. I've had experience with MK growing up since my dad and older sisters played the arcade games, and I got to play the console ports. Playing Shaolin Monks co-op with my cousin that owned the game every time we went over (which was every weekend) we would always take the time to do a full run of SM and eventually goof around with Deception and Armaggedon. I havent seen my cousin in years now and I miss those days, he was the brother I never had.
This game is SO GOOD. For those who don't know, there is a modded version of this game that lets you play the story mode with any of the characters from the versus mode. Merry Christmas
This was the game that got me into Mortal Kombat. I loved it so much that I ended up getting a kollection box that had Deception, Deadly Alliance, and Armageddon, I didn't end up really liking these games tho, until MK9 Kame around and THAT'S when I actually started getting into fighting games. Still hoping for a remaster 🤞 buuuut I don't think that's gunna happen. 😔
I got this game when it was released in 2005 for the Xbox, there were actually two versions of the game released a 720p and 480p, I got the 720p and since my family didn't own an hdtv it wouldn't play right I tried to return it but since I opened it already they didn't accept returns so I got component cables and it work fine the rest is history
OMG!! THIS FUCKING GAME!! I remember like it was yesterday STRUGGLING against Jade, Mileena and Kitana my brother and I were so pumped when we finally got um beat xD
And I still have to ask Ed why won't he do anything with it, be it a port or a remaster. It's enough there's probably never gonna be a "3D MK era" collection, we can't have at least this on modern systems? Don't tell me WB won't let him do it, cause I won't believe it.
Funny story: I had o copy of SM for ps2 back in the day, but my ps2 didn't have a memory card, and given that my father just played fifa06 with friends he didn't want to buy one. So I only came close to beating the game once ever, after a 6 hour binge with my friend, and then the console crashed on the final boss. So I haven't completed SM to this day, lol.
I really miss the times when NRS weren't so afraid of experimenting with their biggest franchise and also explored the MK lore and universe from various points of view and through various methods. You'd thibk now that they're under the win of Warner Bros of all companies it wouldn't be as much of a challenge as when they self published during the Midway era but no, we're stuck with only fighting games that come out every 3-4 years and only entertain you for a few hours with a poorly written story mode
MKSM for me its the best MK, I played it so many times, versus mode is cluncky but its a hidden gem for me, we played for hours with friends, I think that the only bad thing avout it its that they needed more characters. You can feel really inmerse on the game like Decpetion conquest. Thanks for the content Ketchup nad Mustard, ive really appreciate it.

The sad thing is Sub and Scorp being unlockable just by completing the game would now be paid DLC in modern business practises. So few modern games rewards players with bonus content or replayability without an additional charge.
I remember edboon intending for characters to be playable, the ones from versus, in previews. I guess it shipped too early. But with how good it runs with hacks, I'd say they were almost there. Just needed brutalities, and multalities
I am playing this on my oled steam deck. It looks beautiful. Shame on nrs/boon for not giving us a remaster of this on switch, but charging $70 for a mk ps2 game on it
Guys, would you help me find the h@ck rom? English's not my first language and I'm not sure if he said it was called "SM Hook" since I can't find it. I own the original game, of course

I had a ton of fun with this game. Kung Lao could cheese the end bosses with his dive kicks. Sadly for me (who played on Xbox), the secret survival mode was bugged, and would freeze the game after the third fight so I never had a chance to finish it. Luckily for me, I had a sibling (a brother) so we could play co-op and get the co-op related collectibles which was fun. I wish all the unlockable characters were available in the single player without hacking, because that would have been a little extra single-player fun.

shaolin monks is one of my favorite games of all time, and is a game I always enjoyed playing with my older brother (one time, we got the glitch in the survival mode where kintaro grabbed goro, and then threw him to the ground and posed on him, and we were dying laughing). plus now that I know you can do character swaps, I gotta try them with him at some point too. (also I'd want to play this again with my gf at some point too, since we're both massive mortal kombat fans, and it'd be her first time playing) the best part is that this video didn't even go into one of this game's coolest ideas, being that not only can you do fatalities against the bosses, but if you lose to them, they can do it to you as well! last thing is that if they ever attempted a game like this again, I'd have loved to see a 4 player version starring the kombat kids (but since we've already rebooted again, that ship sailed)
