  • This 1959 Chevrolet impala convertible was left for dead in a grove in southern Iowa a few years back, I was able to rescue it and eventually sold it off to a guy who had the talent and skillset to restore this car that many in the community thought was a basket case and too far gone to fix. This impala convertible is turning out really good and just goes to show that any car can be restored if you have the desire to do so. Make sure to subscribe to see more updates on this restoration!

    I LOVE it when people have the skill and dedication to save a wonderful classic car. Even if the will not be like a new car, it is great to see a "hopeless" car come back to life.
    And from the picture I see that it is done the right way. Most guys who "restored" cars did cut so many corners. The vehicles may look good but are often terrible underneath.
    It is true: A car that far gone can only be saved if you do not count the endless hours, days and months that were put into it. This must be a labour of love and you do not plan to make a profit doing it.

    Now that would have been the video to create. 1959 Impala Convertible, Good Roots, Trunk is straight but the Limbs are Termite Infested. Watch my Friend get to work ridding this Classic Ark of all the Holes and Rot that Mother Nature threw at it. See it Bloom Again into what Chevrolet meant it to be. A Classic that will once again Fly down the road with the Wings it was Born with. I wish you taped the restoration. Nothing better than seeing those '59's come back to life.

    I'm happy that people like you try and save cars like this and get them to people who want them. My cousin had a white 59 Chevy convertible and traded it for a 66 Chevelle SS 396. A lot of the younger folks don't know that cars back then were considered old after 3-4 years and weren't worth repairing so they were pushed to the back yard or field and forgotten.

    I agree with you 100%.... it's a restoration! I enjoyed the update. That 59 convertible was worse than Scott's 60 Fury form Cold War Motors. I remember when he dragged that 60 Fury out of two feet of horse crap..... I never thought he would restore that Fury..... It's stunning! I remember watching your video of getting that 59..... I never thought it would get restored either..... I'm glad I was wrong in both cases. Thank you for the update, with the photos.

    I grew up in Mason City in the 60s and my cousin picked me up in his mom's 59 Impala. It was cool, had a 348 in it. Also my friend and neighbor had a 59 Impala that was given to him by his dad. It also had a 348 in it. My co-worker has a beautiful red 59 Impala convertible also with a 348.

    i agree with your idea of conversion and restoration. yes if the 59 started out as convertible and VIN is there, then any parts put into the car to make it road worthy, is OK with me. we put parts into drive train and tires and exhaust and etc, anyway so why not body.
    i also think Mark Warmon should have done the Charger Daytona. He said the engine was known of where abouts. i would say ok to redo the daytona. they also do cuda with aftermarket K members and engine and rear end. so why not body. they had the VIN for it.

    I know a guy with 2 59 ragtops, one is all original the other one is a conversion made from a 4 door. When I asked him about the conversion since he had an OG factory convertible he just said he built the conversion to enjoy it and the factory convertible was like an investment. His attitude changed my mind how I felt about conversions. If I found a 59 convertible in that shape and I had a rust free 4 door it would be very hard to not do a conversion as it would be cheaper/easier in the long run and as long as I enjoy the car other people's opinions wouldn't bother me.

    Good to see the convertible is coming along nicely. As for caring about what other people are saying, who cares what they think. Your car, your money, your time. Since you brought up Mark Worman.I recall he rebuilt a burned out Hemi cuda and saved it by reskinning the whole thing with AMD parts. These cars are getting older and more hard to come by. Long as you arent doing shady stuff with the vin/ title or misrepresenting what it is, I see nothing wrong. I'd rather see it brought back as best you can rather than rotting away. Have fun and enjoy these old cars! I do.

    In that state of disassembly, the 1959 Impala convertible's cabin, doors, floor and chassis can be reinforced to today's crash safety standards. Substitute the old straight steering column with a safety steering system. Add ABS disk brakes, head safety restraints, seat belts, and air bags. The result will be a gorgeous 5 star safety equipped classic. This custom rebuilding will increase the value and durability of the classic car. New category SC (safety customized) classic. Thanks.

    There's nit pickers out there who will say if it isn't running on the original break in oil and tank of fuel from the dealer that it isn't original. The point is to ignore these people who can't be pleased because their opinion does not matter. This car gets to live again. It may take a LOT of work but it's still an awesome car!

  • @markmueller4928
    @markmueller4928 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am behind the time line for comments but I agree. A rebody is just that, a different body or taking the tags or cowl with tags on to a different body. Rebuilding the original car with parts from other cars or aftermarket parts is a restoration. Just about anything can be rebuilt if you have the skills or the cash.

    @todddenio3200 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree with your definition of restoration vs conversion etc. To me a rebody is when virtually every body part if not every body part is a reproduction. If the body is mostly oem original vintage parts even though they were taken from other cars then it is a restoration.

    We're at the point where people are splitting hairs. The fact is, you found a convertible that is a rare find any day. To restore it, all rusty, damaged and worn parts need to be replaced. In that car's case, over 90% of the body parts. But the vin is there. A person may own a car for 50 years, and if they use it regularly, they would replace tires, brakes, repair rust, seat covers, etc so perhaps 50% of the original car would be gone, but it would still be that car. Btw, Peterson Restorations does this with Mustangs. Generally, he keeps the roof, inner body, frame, interior, engine and trans, but replaces all the sheetmetal.

    many take a car and change the suspension, wheels, engine, trans, interior, update lights to led/halogen, replace the tank and lines, brakes, add a/c...isn't that about the same?
    I love the ability to save these basket cases. Usually it's not economically smart (time/parts/money ) to save them
    As they say it's better to buy one already done.
    I'm working on a 76 MG midget..'all there' is relative...it's been fixed at least once, on much of the body. the engine has been rebuilt, the entire brakes system replaced. some updating (rubber bumpers removed), it needs an interior, it's had a new roof, needs a new wiring harness...
    Not counting my time or skills or tool investment I'll have 5k in a car that could sell for 7500..more if hte body work and paint are perfect.
    I could buy a very nice car for that....andhave my time back.
    BUT if this is a hobby, then the time isn't 'time' in the form of work but of fun and therapy.
    Does that time have value? I don't know...ask those people that golf or ride a harley or sit at a car show for 6 hours or walk a parts a rama for 8 hours.

    The ship of Theseus, if over time slowly every board is replaced is it the same ship? That’s a millennia old debate.
    The USS Constitution is a case in point… wood gets old rotted and replaced but it’s the same ship being maintained and repaired over the years. 40% original lumber remains (?)… but the same ship same specs and still sailing.
    Cars are the same. Replace fenders floors rebuild engines replacing worn parts but the essence of that original vin # persist.

    I agree somewhat and disagree! while you are technically building a original car back to what it originally was does make it the real deal, it still has alot of unoriginal metal including aftermarket panels and even the frame sometimes. I dont have a problem with that honestly but what I do have a problem with is people who shit on a correctly done convertible conversion vs a really rough convertible. In my opinion a correctly done conversion is no different than restoring a really rough convertible besides the paperwork. Most times the real convertibles has even more replacement panels including aftermarket panels, hardtop panels, and 4 door panels to repair them. Most of the time a conversion has more og gm metal than a real one because the adverage person building a conversion dosen't start with a rust bucket. Its not like people restoring real convertibles are only using real convertible metal lol. Im honestly considering doing a conversion. It all boils down to quality of work a hack job is a hack job real or conversion

      all cars, conversion or not, need metal. its a gray area for sure

      @@IowaClassicCars Most cars do, but the question is how much metal work can be still considered original? If thats the case just buy a fire wall with a vin tag and paperwork lol. All that metal on top of a frame swap is close enough to a conversion. You would honestly be surprised at how many 4 door cars have convertible titles because some guy bought a rust bucket for the title and vins because legally you only need so much of the metal around the vin

    if you change oil or put gas in the car changes tires light bulbs then its really not original as you would drive off the lot if you think about it
