    Master locks security scale is only there to tell you how tough the packaging is...

      Zachary Lagler Now that is the first analysis I've seen that makes all that fancy packaging with the rating system make sense. Maybe you should apply to be their next CEO.

      I think I had one of these. I seem to recall just picking the lock open to be able to remove it from the packaging rather than having to find some snips to clip the zip ties.

    Just wanted to say thanks - I was running through a list of expletives after locking myself out of the company tool box at work, when i remembered your many comments on how easy Master locks are to pick. I used two paper clips to make a tensioner and rake, and less than two minutes later I had access to the tools again! First lock I've ever picked!

    • @driftwolf

      Every time I watch him do it it's almost as if he's opening them *by accident*. I know it's deliberate, but it just takes so little time each time that it almost looks like "oops, I brushed against it and it totally opened by accident". I wish I could find something OTHER than MasterLock at my local hardware store.

Now I have a good practice lock now that ive gotten it off the chain on the back porch

    You are correct about easy. I just started this hobby three weeks ago and I single picked my Master lock in fifteen seconds. Great confidence builder. I have been using the core of a Kwikset lock for practice. I started out with one pin, then to two pins and I am up to three pins now and getting proficient at it. I change the combination of pins. and try again until I get proficient at it. I'm going to move to 4-pin soon and then gradually move up to all 6. Thanks for being an inspiration. I love your Channel.

    • @nothanks3462
      @nothanks3462 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      John Beauvais depends on the type of hasp you have and general trailer security. No point having a great lock if the hasp or hinges are weak etc. You want very little shackle exposure and little space for pry bars etc. Most locks have pros and cons. A good setup will make the scum look for an easier target or at least slow them down and create noise etc. Abloy makes wonderful padlocks, had mine outside in the rain for almost 5 years now, looks and works as new. Federal lock are very good, the more expensive abus are also good. Lots of people rate the big Stanley one. Ebay can yield some bargains, especially on more obscure but quality brands. Don't worry too much about how easy some guys make it look to pick some of the better locks open. Anybody can open a master lock with a paperclip but it takes lots of skill and practice to pick open a good lock fast.

    When I got my first set of picks (and ran out of locks to pick in the house), I went to Wal-Mart and spent $60 on Master Locks, ranging from 4-9 in their "security" scale. It really was great practice! I returned them all, of course, citing how easy they were to pick open. I loved the look on the employees face, lol.

    We have these at work. And yes, they are ridiculously strong. The sort of idiots we get who try to break in have no clue about lock picking, so they've never gotten past the locks. They all have marks on the shackles where they've tried to cut it, one is beaten up badly, (still works, though) where they hammered on it, but they've never gotten past them. The ones that have successfully broken in have used a truck to crash through the gates, because they haven't been able to get past the locks.

    Master Lock has fell victim to the marketing gods. All they focus on is visual appearance because they know people only care about how something looks and no so much on how something functions. I bet sales at Master Lock have never been better. These videos will do nothing to change what they are doing because they have marketing that works for 99.5% of the people. They could care less about the .5% of us who watch these videos.

    I bought a level 8 Master lock padlock for training today. I have a $12 set of picks I was given for my birthday. I got home and sat down in my chair. It took me longer to get my wrench, and rake, into place, then it did to rake the lock open. I bought a second lock, some off brand cheapo for $2. The $2 lock actually took me longer to get open, but part of that could be because it needed graphite. I didn't even have to take the Master lock out of the package to get it open. On a side note, my mother, who knows nothing about lock picking, other then the literally 5 second training course ("put wrench in. Turn") I gave her, could get the Master lock open. She did it in all of maybe 7 seconds.

    last month my friend had to repair a suspension and wheel bearing of a trailer in the middle of a random parking lot.. we had air tools and a compressor in the trunk. there was an electric outlet on a light pole, but it was locked.. opfully, using a really tiny master lock! I only had weak wire with wish i made a pick and a tensionner.. took me about 30 mins, but i think i was snagging the core and not turning enough the whole time xD
    anyways, you saved us about 120$ of towing and more than 6 hours of manual work under the rain in the winter.
    it was litteraly taking us 45 min for each rusted bolt before i decided to pick the lock of the outlet.

    I bought a 4 pack of basic solid brass master locks years ago. I don't think they're for high security. We have one on our gate and one on our plastic shed. I made some tools out of hair pins and tried to pick one. I was surprised to see they do have a couple of spool pins in them. I couldn't get the thing open.

    I put this same lock on the front gate of a home involved in a title fraud dispute. The criminal arrived one morning with bolt cutters and cut through the boron shackle. They then placed their own new chain and masterlock round disk padlock instead.
    I used a grinder to remove the criminals lock and this time installed my own new masterlock round disk lock and chain.
    Later I discovered that my old magnum key worked to open all of the locks.
    I had no idea they used only 4 pins for key bitting.
    Totally worthless.
    I was told,
    "Locks are only for keeping your friends out"

    I myself have a ´10´: the MasterLock 8195 U-lock. Probably the same core, I guess?
    It has protected my bike well until now, 'cause no one else uses U-locks here in town.
    If I leave it overnight, it's the only one to boast a second lock (Oxford Chain 8 Mini).

    We have one of these on our freezer at work it is not at all weather resistant water constantly gets into it and with the bottom door closed won't drip out and it freezes up solid all the time so its weather resistance is par with its security.

      @rileyfenley522 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In video 968 he did a complete review on that Praxis Kit. In video 968 he talks about the handles he put on them. The .023/.025 he puts standard black heat shrink on. The .015 is blue nautical grade heat shrink, it has an adhesive on the inside and is heavier duty and thicker. I don’t remember the sizes but i think it’s 1/2” heat shrink, it’s in the video.

    • @Kasperob3

      Kasperob3 968 is just a raving review for the kit. I want to pick up the kit just for the .015” picks and the standard thickness deforest diamond. I’ve thought about it since the video, but now i really need the .015” since i just have a 2-3 of that thickness more of a selection would be nice.

    Is there any chance you’d look at the Master Lock 5415D? This is a combination key safe that is used by a *lot* of elderly people in this country on the outside of their homes to contain the home key, so that home carers and/or ambulance personnel can get in when the resident cannot open the door.
    As a bonus, most organizations require you to use your birthday as the 4 digit code, so digit one is pretty much reduced to 0-3, and digit 3 (first of the month number) is reduced to 0 or 1, so simply going through them all is definitely an option.

    I like their locks! Nothing wrong with them. And keep in mind, locks don't stop theft they just slow the thief down, making it longer for them to defeat the lock. And locks, no matter how cheaply made present the scenerio of discouraging the thief by making them work, that's right, work for their item of interest. Most thieves are lazy and will move on to something more easily obtained. And, you better have a license to possess a lock pick set if you are stopped by a LEO making a roadside stop. You can be arrested if you don't have one!

    As per sender's letter, I am SURE it IS the best lock sold in the big box retailer. That is the whole point. Master sells probably 70% product not made BY master, to meet the price point for the box store. Many are knockoffs of their own 6000 and 7000 series locks. But if you want 4 locks keyed alike for 19.99, go to the big box stores.

    Memo from Duh Legal Dept.: MasterLOCK is just a Registered Tradename. NOwhere on the packaging does it state that this device IS a "lock"... it is in fact only a LATCH. e.g. it will keep the spring-loaded roll-up door on your box truck from snapping open while you're driving down the road, lol...
