      I appreciate effort so absolutely I'd eat these. Don't sleep on canned meat and tins of ham, just be careful to not eat regularly (high sodium/salt) but they're cheap, delicious and last for years. Keep a few in the pantry for emergencies.

      Dollar Tree the food is more expensive than an average grocery. They just sell in small portions. The price per cost is higher.

      @@briro3194 in Europe a can of apples would be more expensive than a few fresh apples, also the cookie dough and mixes - it would be way cheaper to get a flour and margarine and make the whole thing. Same with potatoes, that box would be more expensive than a few potatoes... You can find turkey in pieces for an affordable price too...

    • @backtoasimplelife
      @backtoasimplelife 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +23

      Actually many people lived quite differently during the depression, as some of us choose to live today. They weren't constantly eating processed junk food, except bread.. They were growing gardens and/or gathering wild edibles, fishing, raising chickens for meat and eggs, catching wild game and preserving their harvests. City folks would have been standing in line at soup kitchens. Don't live in the city. Live where you can raise your own food.

    • @AngelAshes36
      @AngelAshes36 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Exactly, they would have fed a family of 8 with an amount of money that would be considered far less. Everything in this video is too much money for the number of people it will feed even by today's standards. Whole potatoes are .50 cents a lb! It only takes 30 min max to make mashed potatoes, and the prep is like 5 min if you don't move like a slow poke. If you don't have 5-6 min to chop some potatoes, you are lying.

    • @AngelAshes36
      @AngelAshes36 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Also, for a quarter more than what you spent on cranberries, you could've used fresh celery and onion, and you would have fresh celery left over to nourish yourself with. She's basically trying to act like fresh foods are unattainable for poor people, and they have to settle for processed foods. Process food is NOT cheaper. You could've bought a turkey for less money per lb than the canned and used the leftovers throughout the week for meal prep!

    My husband pointed out that she is also helping people who never learned how to cook from scratch because she is teaching people how to be creative with packaged foods. I love TH-cam (I'm too old for the tickytock!) for that reason. My mom was working 2 or 3 jobs the whole of my childhood and when she did have the energy to cook she didn't have the energy for a sassy know-it-all teenage me. So I learned some basics against my will and thought I could just eat out my whole life. Then reality hit 😅
      TH-cam has taught me so much about cooking, homemaking (if you have a home in any form you're a homemaker and need to know how to clean and run a household,) and just be an adult. It is one of the best things for our times because I KNOW I'm not the only one who was a clueless 18 year old and has been pretending I know what I'm doing since.

      This is very important! I am grateful to have developed great skills in the kitchen, and my friends often ask how I learned to cook, did I cook with my mum-No! My mum was a single working mum living in a council estate in central Scotland in the 80’s! She home cooked about 3 things on rotation with no real joy and the rest of the time we ate canned food! I taught myself to cook by watching cookery shows and trying to replicate ingredients with the cans we had at home! And it was all about learning with what I had! And even now that we are closer to comfortable I am still able to get creative in the kitchen to make sure we have something tasty to eat at the end of the month!

    A lot of people don't understand some of the barriers that people living in extreme poverty or with disabilities face. Not having a fridge or freezer, not having an oven, not being able to get to large grocery stores or food banks, not being able to lift over ten pounds, etc. And even with food banks, they're not unlimited. Yes some have free turkeys but they don't have an unlimited supply. I guarantee a lot of people who needed a turkey got turned away because the food banks ran out.
    What this lady is doing is providing a meal idea that's accessible to almost everyone, even if their circumstances are really limited, either by poverty or disability. It's really easy to say you "won't eat canned turkey" when you aren't in a position where you HAVE to do that. Most of the people criticizing her for the food being plain or unhealthy just have no concept of what it's like to be truly poor.

      My babys still young and wasn't impressed by anything I made. Id say surprisingly enough, she doesn't have (but do most babies not have a) sweet tooth. She likes pineapples just like her older sis. Just more on pizza. The dollar tree I went to had everything u needed for a pineapple upside down cake. It was just missing those little oils they have. But I've been eating it anyways bc I do feel guilty about wasting food. Well, I guess she consumed some deviled eggs, but prob bc they looked like fun for her to get into. But I could see it. Some other locations, if bought earlier, carry enough stuff to make the dinner. Minus the turkey. Im not sure what all meats they carry. But oh well, if you're struggling, you just are. Ppl at the bottom counting their blessings while maybe some others r just comfortably & ignorantly judging. Rich or not, I don't even get that. Like Actually I can afford to lay out for awhile too but that's no1s bizz & it's not like I plan on staying this while. It's just I had an accumulation of health issues , my 1 yr old too, & we barely have any support. Other than through more steady gov assistance. I mean it's embarrassing, but these fans r more..... Anywho, I do like taking time away, spending time with my brat. But I wouldn't say ud find the healthiest meals at dollar tree either. But I guess no thanksgiving dinner is anyways. Also unrelative but I've never used rosemary before. Wow, I can see y ppl use it. Oven cooking that turkey for freaking forever & I can still taste those spices

    The person who said she would never eat canned turkey should be thankful that she never had to. I make a dish with Stove Top Stuffing and chicken and I ALWAYS used canned chicken. I am an old woman (pushing 80) and I am delighted to be able to take this short cut that allows me to have a good meal that is easy enough that I can do it. I have never heard of this lady but I'm glad to learn about her channel and I will be checking her out. I live alone and this year I totally skipped Thanksgiving dinner because I just was not physically strong enough to spend hours making a turkey and all the fixin's for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. If I had seen this video, I might have had this for dinner because I would have had most of the food we normally have for Thanksgiving and it would have been easy enough for me to prepare it by myself. Thank you for putting this lady on my radar!

She understands that sometimes it’s not even money as much as it is equipment or time or disability that makes it more difficult for us to prepare and serve good meals. Not everything from the dollar tree is amazing but sometimes people just need to eat. Her channel is for people who have needs that are being unmet by creators that are catering to middle-age ladies with a minivan that go to Costco regularly. This lady does great to show cheap meals that will taste great. Love it

      As someone who "has" money, its absurd to say your above canned meat. There are so many reasons to use them and not use them. Fresh meat is expensive, but that doesn't make canned meat bad. Spam is delicious if you know how to use it. I eat canned chicken all the time for chicken salad or use it in soups. If the presentation is not a matter go with canned or frozen. Its cheaper. Shaming people for using canned food is nonsense. There are so many reasons to use canned food. Only pretentious snobs who don't appreciate food would scoff at canned food.

You are absolutely correct her dessert if cobbler-like. Have flour and sugar in your pantry? A cake mix? Great, make the cobbler instead of the cookie bars. Would prefer canned chicken, or rotisserie, or have that the frozen leg quarters in your freezer? That's an okay substitute, too. Somexs she slips by me with her chalk and draws all over the walls. I'll be thinking where'd she get that from ,thinking she found lipstick but it's not shades I use. No she just stuffs everything in her mouf & then proceeds to draw. And she seems so satisfied w/ herself for doing it too. Then me cleaning it is like 🤔💡 oh. It's that chalk. That's easy to clean off & relief. Gonna keep getting her chalk too.& Thank gah for the dollar tree. although I forgot to pick up wipes. So I practically live there.
      Also working w/ vulnerable populations, in more recent yrs, yeah, I buy them stuff. But this store makes that convenient too. For hygiene, toys, etc. not saying groups, fams, & co.'s, ... Etc doesn't, but somexs there is a lack & things do easily get lost, damaged, stolen, wever. I don't always think it's on purpose, other times, yes

    I love the Dollar Tree dinners lady! I’ve been watching her for over a year, and I am a supervisor for a vendor for dollar tree. I love looking for the cool ingredients she mentions. And even if you have more money and dont have to shop at Dollar Tree, her recipes are just great in general. Easy to follow, and her meal prep ideas are versatile.
    I just bought my first house with my bf. And I’m not gonna lie, we’re struggling right now trying to keep up with bills and home repairs. (We bought an older home because it was more affordable) So her videos definitely come in handy more than ever now. ❤
    Edit: I wanted to add too that she thinks about those of us who live in food deserts! I live in one and the closest regular grocery store is over a 30 minute drive away in any direction. But you know what we do have? A dollar general! At the end of my street. That is the only food for 20 miles in my rural community. And it has helped me out so many times. I literally forgot to buy milk tonight for what I’m bringing for Thanksgiving tomorrow and dollar general came in clutch!

    This lady's recipes are a godsend! I recently had to go a year without an oven since the oven part wasn't working (just the stovetop was), I couldn't afford to replace it, and nothing I was doing could fix it. I was lucky enough to have a toaster oven (which cooks like an oven but is much smaller), so I could cook, but not big things like whole turkeys or casseroles in the 9x13 inch pan. Luckily, I was able to get my oven fixed, so I can now make use of those lovely large casserole dishes that people gave me for free when I first moved in :) Thank you for helping me discover this lady!
