this couldn't've been a kids game. when I was a kid I played a kirby game , got stuck on a level and got so mad I bit a fucking wii remote SO HARD I broke the fucking A button. if I played this as a kid I would've had a stroke and shot someone. props to u

As it turns out, the manual may not have been updated to match the final game, as Toad was what the mushroom was during the beta for the game.
Fun fact: the Nintendo CD-i games are the first (and maybe only?) Nintendo games with full Dutch audio

never had hotel mario but CDI was baby's first console, it held up well when you were 3 and didnt know what the fuck games were supposed to be like

hey idk if this helps any, but contrary to popular belief, the cd-i was not actually technically a games console, more of a multimedia home computer that could play games. for instance, the reason the default controller is bad for playing games is because its more designed for navigating menu interfaces, as most families would get it for playing music cds, photo cds, or, if u had the addon, video cds. funnily enough, your metaphor about buying a vcr that cant play videocassettes is accidently apt, as to play vcds u need to purchase a mpeg-support addon cartridge seperately (digital video was expensive at the time).
it is weird to think about given most ppl getting or owning a cd-i nowadays will be getting it for its unique game library, but the cd-i is a lot closer to a webtv or an e-machines computer than a nintendo, to make a probably poor comparison.
apologies for the long comment, im just quietly obsessed with multimedia machines of the early 90s.
