    The bridge in the middle that's not funny is the true theme of the song. You'll notice that during that moment, the frame expands from the 1:1 ratio used on Instagram to a wide shot which, when matched with the sudden, intense seriousness of the subject matter, is designed to show you the duality inherent in social media. You see only what people want to show you. You know and recognize the content of the jokes simply from the title of the song, and that recognition reinforces the idea that you really know the person he's singing about. Then he hits you with that bridge, and you are forced to realize that behind all of that, there is a real person who you actually know nothing about at all, whose life you are only seeing through carefully curated snippets.

    • @nathanb7221
      @nathanb7221 3 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      This is exactly the point. The internet loves to tear people down and dehumanize people into memes but these are real people holding on to real issues. Bo Burnham knows this all to well

    • @ben.p

    • @lilboz
      @lilboz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Another possible interpretation is to notice how the frame closes back right as he says 'give a hug and kiss to dad', meaning the sob story was never real but just meant for more attention. Either way, it's well done for it to have so much potential meaning. The man is definitely very clever!

    • @babykermie
      @babykermie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      I think if you’ve ever heard Bo speak in interviews, the interpretation that there’s a real person behind each carefully curated post is the correct one. Claiming that women just post heartfelt shit on the internet for attention is sexist and he’s very much against that. It also just fits the theme of the whole special better than assuming he’s just ripping on women. It’s definitely a commentary about how we’re always performing via social media.

  • @CynicalClam
    @CynicalClam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +236

    The fact that the frame pans out to represent her “real” life then pans right back into the superficial things. Its so clever. I love all your reactions!

      Bo is a genius.
      He checked every single persons judgement who laughs at a white girls instagram, forcing them to realize that there’s real people behind those pictures with sadness, and hurt.
      But, the ‘girl’ only received real understanding and sympathy when she was being real. If we would just be more real, perhaps we could connect with others a bit more deeply.

    • @redthorne1129
      @redthorne1129 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@bambicrandi The sad part is there's enough comments here saying the emotional bridge is just showing how white women lie for attention, or she moved away from her parents or had some falling out and it's just complaining about things she's done to herself. I hope this song actually changes the thinking of some people, but there are still many, many more that refuse to see a person's pain for more than attention-seeking.

    • @My.Darkling
      @My.Darkling 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@redthorne1129 I can't BELIEVE whenever people say that, that they think the emotional part is about lying... like, the point is that she's a 3 dimensional person with real problems behind all the happy, wholesome pictures, that she has a real life and maybe she does this "basic ass" instagram stuff because it *makes her happy* and you should just let her

    This one does such a weird thing to me. My perspective in the first half is like “yeah, white women lawl” then he hits the part about her mom and I can’t keep my eyes from welling up. • @AnOpalGhost
      @AnOpalGhost 3 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I think it's because at that point she becomes a person rather than a platonic concept, which is really affecting in the point that so is everyone else you've ever looked at and seen through the lens of the first part of the song. It reels you in by making you complicit in the joke and then yanks the rug out by making HER not the joke.

    • @BloodyNihal
      @BloodyNihal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Same, I tear up during the bridge, and then when he says "a ring on her finger from the person that she loves" I can't help but tear up again because I am... happy for her? Proud of her? You look at the whole song with different eyes, after that bridge. That's genius.

Notice how the aspects ration changes from the (instagram) square to the wide screen! But also at the same time, it is calling white women out for some things obviously, there are a few quite specific jabs, like the "quote from Lord of the Rings incorrectly attributed to Martin Luther King" or the "dream catcher bought from Urban Outfitters" or the mug that says "Beyonce is my spirit animal". • @hoodyboody
      @hoodyboody 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure that's exactly what he's trying to achieve. The square aspect ratio shows when the woman is being performative, and the widening ratio and lyrics about her mother are when she's tapping into her true feelings and being less performative. Not sure it's trying to teach us not to make fun of people though. It doesn't really link together that she's drawing comfort out of the superficial content. Just that it's rather thoughtless, but she does have some kind of authenticity in her if she dug deep enough. Also, just a theory, but I'm not actually sure the mother is dead, and if she's not, that might just play into her performative nature even more. What do you think?

    • @Natlatify
      @Natlatify 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Chris Pridmore I'm pretty sure the message is supposed to be that the mother is dead. She's been gone 10 years. The daughter is learning to live without her, she's telling her how she's doing, but not directly, not seen her house or met her boyfriend. Either she's dead or she's disowned her daughter. Both scenarios are pretty sad. Its safe to assume its the former.
      I agree with what the original comment personally - no matter how superficial and samey a girls Instagram is - remember there's a human on the other side of it, which bo illustrated. Its funny to joke about the stereotype, but it's harmless fun, most of Bos song seems to laugh at how wholesome & pure it is. Its their little piece of heaven (is this heaven? No its a white womans Instagram). Its marginally critical of some cultural insensitivties (like the MLK reference) but seems mostly for humor than to make a statement.

    My personal take is that even though a lot of it is cliche and easy to tease that doesn't mean it isn't earnest. Even the letter to a dead relative is kind of a cliche at this point but that doesn't make it less meaningful.
    In this special he explores the idea of the good and bad of the internet, especially on Welcome to the Internet. I think this is a primer for that, in that we see this idea that platforms like instagram almost outright demand superficiality by nature but that doesn't make it without meaning or resonance.

The square format appears when he sings about the typical white woman stuff, but when the post about the mom comes up, the screen expands to full view to show that the post is meant to be truthful and not a performance. I like how throughout the Instagram post bits there's little snippets of the character behind it. Like, early on, you get "a couple holding hands" and it gets passed over. Then in the emotional, real-world segment, the character mentions they have a boyfriend, and suddenly that gets put into context. Then at the end, while going through superficial standard Instagram stuff, the song lingers for a couple lines on "three little words, a couple of doves, and a ring on her finger from the person that she loves", complete with wedding bells in the background, showing that the character married her girlfriend. Notably, it's worth noting that the song for the most part just... lumps these in with the rest of the posts. And really, that is what it is. To us, random people browsing the internet, we just see yet another picture of a couple, or a marriage. But these are REAL PEOPLE. That's two real people in love, or getting married. Behind every stereotypical Instagram page, behind every faceless internet user playing some manufactured persona for views or clicks, there's a real person, doing something they really do enjoy. Really makes you think.

    If you ever watch the whole special I think the context of the messy floor will become a bit sad. I do like that it's included here at the top even though it doesn't fit with the context of the song because we're transitioning from the main thesis to a perfectly cropped performance.

    Notice the aspect ratio when he starts talking about the mom being dead. The whole song is the same aspect ratio as actual instagram pictures. But when he's talking about the real shit like her mom being dead, he makes it full screen because that's real life. Everything else is faked.

  • @coreyrogers8700
    @coreyrogers8700 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Notice on the mom part, it expands out from the Insta square. Because every once in a while people will be real on social media, then it shrinks right back to the square and all the fake stereotypes start again

    The song follows the flow of a "white woman's instagram"... all that nonsense... followed by her very serious post about her mom... followed by more nonsense... also, since you're already on a Bo Burnham kick, you gotta watch "welcome to the internet" it's excellent!

    • @BigKC3
      @BigKC3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah dude, i love the the call back to the serious part a bit later that I missed the first few listens because it was thrown in with the nonsense, but the 3 words, couple of doves and a ring on her finger has got to be calling back to the boyfriend part earlier and them getting married.
      there are real people hidden amongst all the meaningless corporate things people post on the internet.
      And definitely gotta do welcome to the internet.

    I love Wisecracks video on bo burnham from a few years ago about his evolution in comedy and how he’s one of the only leading comedians out there who offers genuine emotion and hope in his comedy that most mainstream shows ignore. Like his early years, kinda like how the beginning of this song resembles the kind of nihilistic comedy of Rick and Morty: “everything is stupid and derivative, all white women are the same and geez aren’t their instagram accounts laughable?” And then in the bridge he hits it with that honesty and introspection- saying “hey, every person on social media is struggling with things you don’t know about”, in this song she misses her parents and sharing dumb little things with her followers that bring her some joy is a way she’s coping with not being able to share her life with the people she really wants to. It’s kinda beautiful tbh

    I think I've watched White Woman's Instagram going on 10-15 times now, between myself and showing it to others, and without fail, every. single. time. I cry when he gets to the part about the mom. The first time was the worst, he lures you in deep with the haha white women are so superficial and then destroys you with that part. And my mom is healthy and should have many decades left, but that part absolutely tears me up every time.

    The joke about the dead mom is a commentary about how they throw out that post for 1,000s of likes on a serious post but their next post is about them posting about a goat cheese salad. It's not so much introducing serious subject matter to the song, but how they get serious for 2 seconds and immediately about-face and follow it up with some bullshit.

    im so glad you picked up on the nuance he gave to this random "white woman" that he did for the song; he shows that she can be shallow, but she can also want to be politically progressive, while at the same time having blindspots about her own privilege, she does cliche things like have a job and an apartment and celebrates getting married and being 27 in kind of an annoying way, but she's also a person who loves her parents and had to deal with a huge loss and is in pain. people are complex man, and i love that he put those sort of contradictions in the song about this character, it made it so meaningful and hard hitting.
