    I think the "social commentary" on this one is that there is a real person behind every stereotype, and that even though basic people are basic, they are people and they have genuine and real feelings.

    • @QuikVidGuy
      @QuikVidGuy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Genuine, but constrained by how social media is training us to seek engagement even in our most sincere expressions, to make our every emotion palatable to an audience

      I never thought of it that way until you said this, and now I see it. Like why else would he spend an entire section in the middle of this otherwise ridiculous song talking about some girl who's lost her mom? And during that part, the camera widens out from the size of a phone to a wider frame and back again, showing the full picture behind the manicured, "Insta-worthy" pic.

    • @DJDipstick

      @@MeganTheLibrarian3 Most interesting part to me is that the frame starts closing in again as soon as she starts talking and bragging about all these things that she has now (job, apartment, boyfriend)

    • @matthewgilbert9881

      Whereas I take the mom section to be there to make the audience ask, “why is this person sharing this on IG?” Because it is a not subtle plea for attention, while showing how sad and thoughtful you are. It also includes bragging, which is acceptable bc it’s supposed to be sad. I do think that part of his point is how these posts are how some people try to deal with grief, despite it being an ineffective means of doing so. And if the person has a more meaningful way to process their grief, like actually talking with someone they’re close to, why are they sharing this on IG?

    • @BlankedOutSlate
      @BlankedOutSlate 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@matthewgilbert9881 I mean, it's literally the reason why they're posting it on IG to begin with, cause they couldn't tell these things to said person anymore and to deal with it they're just using it as a sort of tribute to the mom and how much she loves her mom; So far from how I've relistened to this music multiple times, it always bothered me that people assumed it's to make fun of said ww's ig or assume that people are posting those things for clout or attention.
      Which is exactly why I'm at the opinion of we shouldn't just assume somebody based on what they post online, we don't really know them and it sucks to just assume somebody's something they're not, which I'm pretty sure Bo could relate to especially with his old "we think we know you" skit/song.
      As much as it seems clout-ish, you really can't tribute somebody as better as doing so on the internet nowadays, cause at least with the internet you can eternalize it; She wants to keep that memory of her mom while at the same time letting people know that her mom raised her great enough that she would've talked to her about these things in her life if she was still there

    I think this one was relatively straightforward. I just interpreted it as just being what he sees, more or less. For the most part it’s uplifting if superficial or performative sentiments. But every now and then you get glimpses into the true depth of their lives an are reminded that there’s a real person on the other end. That’s why the verse about her mom widens from Instagram’s aspect ratio, then closes back in when her next post is about goat cheese salad. The whole thing felt like a balance of teasing and appreciation.

    There are real people behind the bullsh*t on social media. When the lyrics changed to a more real topic (missing a family member who has passed) the formatting changes from the typical Instagram square frame to a wider one, then back.

    It’s a social commentary, Inside is themed after being locked in your home with nothing but mostly internet to keep you company. I love how there is still some storytelling because in the bridge section, the screen widens to show the more “human” or vulnerable side of the woman as she talked about her mom, then it goes back to the instagram aspect ratio when it came to the next verse. And as you mentioned, the bells you can hear when it comes to the part “three words, a couple of doves, and a ring on her finger from the person that she loves” like it was a continuation from her telling her mom about her boyfriend.
    It shows that there’s a real human behind those “cheesy/pretty” posts. You can say it’s kind of both teasing and appreciating.

    i love the songs from inside, but they really make a lot more sense when you watch the entire special. when we just watch the music videos we loose the context and the continuity, it's like watching one scene of a movie
    loving the reactions, i think bo's 'lower your expectations' would be a fun one.

      i disagree, at least for this song. if you were to say this about all eyes on me, all time low, that funny feeling, goodbye, etc. i'd agree. but songs like white women's instagram are fine on their own

    That was funny. He, literally, resolved the conflict seconds before you wondered. You noticed the framing shift, that indicated sort of zooming out to see the subject as a whole and then back in to focus on just the photography again. Great vid. I notice the symbolism in the lyrics but the technical proficiency escapes me until someone like you points it out, so thank you for that.

  • @rachelz57
    @rachelz57 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    it’s not so much that you need to context of the special to understand the point of the song, but rather, the song is a small piece of a whole.
    One of the major themes of the special is how we’re constantly subjected to performance, of ourselves and from others, in online spaces, and how that harms us as individuals.
    The song serves that theme by depicting a woman who uses instagram to turn her life into a series of aesthetics, but every now and then, she breaks the performance to be vulnerable and honest, and the audience gets a glimpse of the real person struggling with grief and trying to make a good life for herself

  • @bradtorville5526
    @bradtorville5526 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    He's not seeing any conflict. It's a commentary on social media, particularly Instagram. Throughout the video and song, he's perfectly duplicating a lot of very popular and typical images that exist on Instagram. All of the poses he strikes, the items he uses, all of them can be found on Instagram posts. The middle portion, the part about the girl's tribute to her dead mom, when he pulls out and widens the shot as he sings, he's trying to emphasize that these White women aren't all airheads and dopes creating all of these nonsense posts and images on Instagram but that many have very deep and personal meanings for these women. He's respecting that and demonstrating it with that middle portion. Then narrows the screen again to have it resemble a phone visiting Instagram pics as he continues to mimic actual pics that can be found there.

  • @zachmarkon
    @zachmarkon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The way I saw it was a social commentary on how social media is a facade over what’s really complicated in life. The video physically widens and “opens up” as he talks about the dead mom and complex life events. Then it narrows back down and “closes off” as he goes back to the facade and aspect ratio that is social media/Instagram.

    Method acting involves staying in the headspace of your character in your off-time so that you can internalize how they move and react in more subtle ways. This can range from just keeping your posture and voice consistent in-between takes to avoid resetting yourself all the way up to attempts that are so dangerous that they outweigh their usefulness, like depriving yourself of sleep to appear less healthy

    I think he’s pointing out the elements of influencer’s Instagram accounts that we all find a little ridiculous. The stuff that just gets repeated again and again on posts and that many people make fun of! Then he throws in the verse about her mum, and marrying the man she loves, missing her dad etc, to remind us that there are human beings behind these accounts.

    He even directed and wrote a movie called "Eighth Grade" - He definitely has an eye for shots.
    Yeah, this song is basically singing about every white woman's Instagram, but there is a real person behind all those photos. In this case the aspect ratio is like IG in the video, but when it gets to the serious post from this woman, it widens out to represent real life. She is making a post that she is doing well and met the love of her life. She missed her mom because she has passed away and she tells her to give a hug and kiss to dad since they are both in heaven now ... Then it goes back to basic IG posts in the IG aspect ration for the images. Basically a don't judge a book by its cover when everyone is posting the same types of photos on social media. There are real lives behind every single one of these people that you might not know about .. Don't lump them all into one category of a basic person.

    I think you do yourself a disservice by watching individual videos out of context instead of the special. I appreciate the breakdowns from a music producer perspective, but I wonder if it's necessary to go in completely cold - if you watched the special, then reacted to the songs and videos after already hearing them once, I think that would still work.

    • @RareHarmony
      @RareHarmony 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is a catch-22. If he reacts to the entire special, he can only show you a bit of the reaction, for copyright purposes. Doing each song individually gives him an opportunity to react to the entire song, so you do not miss anything.

    • @josephkuchar5645
      @josephkuchar5645 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RareHarmony yeah, but what I'm suggesting is that he watch the special on his own, then separately react to the songs after. It wouldn't be a true reaction, but I think the style he does of breaking down music production techniques doesn't necessarily benefit from doing it on the first listen.
