The frame expands to show a true moment of vulnerability in the middle of all of the vapid posts. "She" posts that both of her parents have passed and about dealing with grief. Then the frame shrinks and goes back to the vapid posts. Bo is brilliant in that he can make something so humorous and still throw in some heart.
Funny you say this I always thought something else. The line "Mama, I love you, give a hug and kiss to dad" at the end of the frame expansion to me by the tone in Bo's voice told me that both the Mom and Dad are alive and that she actually is talking to them through the Instagram post like many instagrammers do and that's why the line reads like a joyful surprise as opposed to anything somber. It's because everything she said is meant to be taken at face value, much like the rest of the song. Otherwise, why have the so-called singular serious line that's meant to be outside of all the usual Instagram stereotypes and faux vulnerability, sung when Bo is clearly still posing and in the fairylight outline of none other than the room he's been trapped in? He's still inside, he never went out to take any of these pictures just as this women never did, she's inside her apartment and just like the photos it's all fake. The impression at first is it's a tender message to someone who may never read it but then the tone shifts to be a lot more positive as the chorus returns and coincidentally the frame representing the faux reality of everything shrinks again only to be coupled with a goat cheese salad. As if the parents absence is no longer anything of note, cause it isn't as far as the gallery shows. Just another moment. To me it never sounded like a melancholy way of wishing her parents well in heaven but actually literally instructing the mom to give her Dad a hug and a kiss after reading the post, because she's moved out with her new boyfriend and like she said isn't doing too bad and is actually quite happy. She just misses her mom. Meaning that once again all this beautiful lighting and misquoted poetry is just for aesthetic and in reality it's all mainly just plastic. Things are far from perfect yes and this girl still has issues as anyone does but they are a far cry from anything Bo's feeling and so this amplifies the disconnect between him and the rest of the world as he knows it as he scrolls through his phone. A somewhat brighter and yet darker twist on what initially seemed like the songs 1 moment of true insight, only to show that its just a white women's instagram
TLDR: Have a slightly more cynical and yet tragic interpretation of that line if you're interested or don't. It's just a thought
@@Nobody0333 I think it's definitely implying the parents have passed. If they hadn't, they'd know about all these things she's talking about in that long Instagram post - her great job, apartment, boyfriend, etc. It felt to me like Bo was acknowledging the fact that even the most basic IG is ran by a real person who has a full life and real problems just like everyone else (and the widening of the frame was such a cool way to represent that). But the part of themselves they choose to share the most is still pretty cringey lol.

Whose to say this girl is even close with her parents enough TO check in with all those things? After all the most we know about her according to the song is that she just posts vapid stuff on instagram. So whose to say really. Dead parents, alive parents. Zombie parents. Who knows
I interpret it as Bo’s cynicism toward the idea that one moment we’re looking at kittens, then dead kids in Palestine, then a Chik-fil-A ad, then Kylie Jenner, then your best friend’s new baby and none of it fucking means anything because we’re desensitized from all these corporations trying to provoke our emotions. I don’t think the point was “look how sweet humanity can really be.” The frame expansion demonstrates that moment when we as consumers feel that empathy because we are human, but it’s quickly cut off and you feel that reach shrink back down because you just have to keep scrolling and absorbing more content

To be honest, this is a underrated song from Bo´s special. It´s all fun and cliches until he hits you with the view that these women (and I guess he refers to other people on social media as well) my need this to help them with the grief. I honestly cried when he told the "backstory" of the lost parents and all. I think this song is very special. As well as the fact that the zoom went from the 1:1 of Instagram to a wideframed shot for a few seconds...I think this is means that behind every post, even the cliche ones, there is some backstory.
I hope you guy get what I mean. I´m German and I dont know if I used the right words to describe it

When I watched the song for the first time I was like "this is going to be funny" and then he hits me with the feelings and know I'm crying every time I hear this song. This man is a genius.

Have you seen the new "All Eyes on Me" alternative version from the "Inside Outtakes" on Bo's channel yet? You must do a reaction video to the alt version.
I think the worst part about most of these reactions is no one listens to the words. "Oh wow the picture, lul", "oh cool lights, hardy harr"... Much like dogs chasing a flashlight beam. Bo just exploited and destroyed instagram influencers, and if you care to watch the entire special he destroys youtube reactions too. I think the greatest genius about this show is that he knew that people would do this with his content, but he made it in such a way that it's impossible to not make yourself look like an idiot if you do.

Song in a nutshell .. Everyone posts the same types of things online on social media and you COULD group them all into one barrel by saying they're all the same, but we all have individual issues going on in our lives. There are individual people behind all these posts and it is basically a don't judge a book by its cover song because you don't know what they're going through.
I see this song as tackling humanisation and how we should be treating people.
Most people listening were making fun of and maybe stereotyping and slightly deshumanizing this white woman for posting "basic" stuff on the internet until they realised she was using social media to cope. They needed a justification, a backstory to humanise her. And then they got it!
In real life tho, it doesn't work that way.
Social media is a façade. It's not 100% _genuine_ if anything people do their best to show their best moment in fear of receiving overbearing judgements from strangers whose opinion was never asked like wtf?! I just wanted to show my art pieces to fellow artists. Chill out💀😟...etc etc
Truth is, being "basic" isn't a real thing and even if it was you can't make it someone's whole personality or use is as a reasoning to justify your biases.
I remember going through aoc then reading a fanfiction that went on hiatus. It was very silly and self indulgent but when the author came back they talked about how life has been hell, that 4 of their family members died to covid and that their landlord kicked them out, which led them to be homeless for a few weeks, but now they were back! Writing silly selfindulgent stuffs. It made them happy, it made readers happy.
So yeah, Some people genuinly believes that they're smarter or more unique than others because of what they do/don't post or listen to. People need to realise they're allowed to just enjoy things. We're here to relax, get a little escapism, maybe pretend our lives are better than they are.
Don't ruin it. Don't be reductive.

Ey dude, if ya like the songs from the Inside special of Bo Burnham I recommend listening to the song That Funny Feeling. It's powerful, at least to me. Having some strong mental problems and stuff. And actually the whole documentary speaks so much about mental health and stuff so I think people should check it out. Great work man, love your reactions!

I think it's funny how I tried to get my friend to watch this and he refused because Bo's voice was too "white and cringey", he is white himself and yet there are people who are black on youtube reacting and thinking his work is great

I don’t have an Instagram for this reason tbh. I’d much rather keep my life and relationships private. Not to mention, I got rid of it for my own mental health. It’s incredibly disheartening to see all the women that are more beautiful then you day after day, and it hurts your confidence. The downsides of social media.
