A handgun bullet which expands to a diameter that dwarfs a 12-gauge shotgun slug is absolutely amazing. The HST in .45 is indeed, like you said, the alpha round.
The expanded 45 was .1 larger than a non-fired 12g. Except a self-defense slug will have around twice the velocity and nearly five times the energy. You 45 worshipers really do drink some crazy Kool-Aid. It's a very good round for sure, but you're comparing a rifled musket to a cannon.
For decades i carried a glock 30 as my off duty and personal firearm. I used federal ammo, usually hydra shoks. Some times my round would expand when i tested the ammo some times not but a 45 is still a .45. If my bullet expanded it was amazing otherwise i figured it was good enough. Bullet tech has come a long way and as i have aged into my fifties i decided it was time to get a smaller lighter firearm and carry a 9mm now. Thank you for testing these rounds as both are in my gun safe.
When I gave my son my Colt 1911, I also gave him a box of HSTs. And, for my diehard FMJ friend, your previous HST test opened his eyes, and I gave him a box of HSTs for his birthday. 👍
The Federal blue box had extremely good standard deviation. Tight, tight! Can't say that for the HST Premium. Federal Premium in Nosler has been my go to in .270 since the late 80's or early 90's...Never saw any caliber in Federal Premium that wasn't top tier...awesome bullet yes indeed.
Nice!!! Ole Dolly would be proud of your version. 😂. The HST is just a beast in .45. When I carry my G30 I have it topped off with the 230+p HST’s. I’ve actually taken a pig with it and my G20 and both bullets looked almost like that except a couple petals were a little bent where it went through a rib but performed perfectly. I wasn’t holding my breath with this test. It’s just a top tier round. Awesome video as always 👍🇺🇸
I've been handloading and shooting the HST for several years, and it has replaced my old standbys of the old Remington Golden Saber and the Speer Gold Dot (Both good performers). It is the bullet loaded in my bedside 45 ACP 13 shot XD, and when I carry a 45 ACP for defense, it is my goto bullet of choice loaded to +P pressure at 925fps.
I had a thought...since there are always variations in the muzzle velocity from round to round, have you ever taken the 'loser' and fired 5 shots into the jelly contraption to see if any of the 5 expand? The single shot test might have been a lower velocity round. With .45 ACP, a small difference in muzzle velocity could make a big difference in expansion (compared to faster calibers). Great video. That HST is no joke!
Thank you sir. I don't have the time to do something like that and keep pumping out videos almost daily. The problem is it doesn't matter how long I make the videos by putting in more content, it will only get watched for the same amount of time as a standard 10 to 15 minute gel video. Blame TH-cam watchers short attention span.😆
I get a kick out of buying and trying different kinds of hollowpoints but everytime I watch one of your HST gel tests it proves to me I only really need to stockup on one brand lol HST is the king! Good video Tools. You deserve all the views and subs that are inevitably headed your way.
Very surprising that both met the speed criteria. But the surprising star of the show was the HST. I didn't think it would perform as good like you said. 👍

The only test I think I've done with them was one of the very first ones I ever did and only had a few rounds of it. They did pretty good on that one from what I remember, but might need to see if there are any around to do a new one.
@@ToolsandTargets I searched the back catalog, and sure enough there was a test! They seemed to perform decent enough considering the price point. If I could, I'd send you some to test but our governments don't like law abiding citizens sending ammunition/firearms to each other. My sister came up for Easter, but she was flying this time so she didn't bring us any goodies. She's in Chattanooga. Cheers! 👍😎
There is one you have not tested that I would like to see. I cannot find where anyone has a video on it. The Federal Tactical Bonded 230 grain 45 acp +P. It's supposed to be as good as HST but bonded.
Did it open up on one side ( blue box ) because it tumbled or did it tumble because of asymmetrical expansion creating more drag on one side. Chicken or egg.
The rational me knows it's not the caliber, it's the placement (assuming sufficient oomph to get to the essential plumbing). BUT there's just SOMETHING about a .45 that makes me believe in it beyond any other non-magnum round. :D The blue-box wasn't super but would still put a hurting on a bad guy (and anyone behind him), better than ball, IMHO. But that HST ... wow, can I get an Amen? My old dept way back in the day issued 230 gr Hydra-Shoks. If I didn't still have several boxes of those, I'd be scouting the local stores for some HSTs.
Ya know, i had a long and rough day today, and all i could think of was getting home with some Taco Bell, and watchin some T&T And now im doin exactly that! And seein the HST perform like it did is just the cherry on top!
That’s pretty insane that they can make a bullet moving that slow peel open to almost double it’s original size. The blue box was definitely a disappointment but the HST performed as well as I heard it does. I would love to see this test again with the 185gr +P versions of these round.
My good friend is a K9 deputy .couple years ago he was involved in a shooting . Lady pulled a .380 .. wouldn’t put it down..fired a round luckily it didn’t hit my friend.. he Carries G21 with 230+p HST … it was a one shot stop with the 230 HST.. not scientific but it is real world performance..
Hey tools can I get a few of those opened up .45 HSTs I’d love to buy them would be a cool conversation piece. I have .380 but no big boys Lmk thanks bud.
The start of the video kinda sounded like this: We ought to have just enough room to drive a garbage truck through this, so let's go try to drive two garbage trucks through it at once. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣 You're not wrong. It was close quarters with these big boys and I aint the best with a 1911 to begin with. I was expecting about 3 or 4 shots and a hot mess in the gel when it was all said and done.

Great test again Tools! Sometimes saving a few bucks up front isn't really worth it. I recently picked up a couple boxes of Remington UMC .45acp 230gr JHP for not a lot of Chinadian dollars. Have you any experience with those? Hopefully I didn't get hosed too bad LoL. Appreciate ya brother
👍😎
The only test I think I've done with them was one of the very first ones I ever did and only had a few rounds of it. They did pretty good on that one from what I remember, but might need to see if there are any around to do a new one.
@@ToolsandTargets I searched the back catalog, and sure enough there was a test! They seemed to perform decent enough considering the price point. If I could, I'd send you some to test but our governments don't like law abiding citizens sending ammunition/firearms to each other. My sister came up for Easter, but she was flying this time so she didn't bring us any goodies. She's in Chattanooga. Cheers! 👍😎
This what a man will carry, I liked the blue box
😎👊
There is one you have not tested that I would like to see. I cannot find where anyone has a video on it. The Federal Tactical Bonded 230 grain 45 acp +P. It's supposed to be as good as HST but bonded.
12 Guage is ~0.79" diameter.
The 0.82" expanded 45 ACP Federal HST is very impressive.
For 45 the 230 grain hydroshok is best rated at 900 fpe and I get 898 average rocks.
TN outdoors 9 tested the HST 10 years ago...same results...😊
😎👍
That HST was beautiful! Good video. Thanks Tool. 👍🇺🇸
Thank you sir.😎👊
Did it open up on one side ( blue box ) because it tumbled or did it tumble because of asymmetrical expansion creating more drag on one side. Chicken or egg.
🤷♂
Great jelly test Tools love the HST Stay Safe Stay 2A Strong 🇺🇸
Thank you sir. It always seems to get the job done.😎👍
Shoot! More ammo to collect! Ive never seen that federal blue box jhp. I want a box for my collection and I want it NOW! Thanks for another cool vid!
😂😂😂
Another great test I appreciate all you do on these videos great job I love 45acp
Thank you sir. A lot of lead goin downrange from these big boys.😎👍
Glad the HST did what it is supposed to. Thanks.
I don't know why I had any doubts.😎👍
Hey TT, excelent video as usual, thanks!
Thank you sir.😎👊
I ordered some 185 gr. HP 45 acp, but haven't shot any yet.
185 is probably the sweet spot for most .45 hp's.
Amen!😎👊
I wonder what the results would be through bare gel.
Ya know, i had a long and rough day today, and all i could think of was getting home with some Taco Bell, and watchin some T&T
And now im doin exactly that!
And seein the HST perform like it did is just the cherry on top!
Now you got me wanting Taco Bell!😆😆😆
@@ToolsandTargets Tools, Targets, and Taco Bell!
That’s pretty insane that they can make a bullet moving that slow peel open to almost double it’s original size. The blue box was definitely a disappointment but the HST performed as well as I heard it does. I would love to see this test again with the 185gr +P versions of these round.
It is pretty crazy stuff.
Almost any 45 round even it it does not expand is nearly half a inch...lol.Fudds just adore it, it is the ultimate Fudd cartridge.
Wabbit Season!💥🐰💥
@@ToolsandTargets Fudds get weel angwee is you dis tha 19 eweven.Arthwitis flares up...
Sounds about right.
Hey tools can I get a few of those opened up .45 HSTs I’d love to buy them would be a cool conversation piece. I have .380 but no big boys Lmk thanks bud.
The start of the video kinda sounded like this:
We ought to have just enough room to drive a garbage truck through this, so let's go try to drive two garbage trucks through it at once.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣 You're not wrong. It was close quarters with these big boys and I aint the best with a 1911 to begin with. I was expecting about 3 or 4 shots and a hot mess in the gel when it was all said and done.
That HST is beautiful how do they feed ?
I have no doubt about either one of these rounds especially the HST
HST has some type of alien technology in it.💥👽💥
@@ToolsandTargets I recant my statement for the blue box. I knew nothing about those but federal makes pretty decent stuff. The HST is proven and is a little pricey but you get what you pay for.
