We have a saying here "NASA should study the Brazilian people", because we're so resourceful, you know? And you're actually right, this move is very theatrical and poetic because it was adapted from an Ariano Suassuna's play. Suassuna was one of our most beloved writers, amazing story teller, he was very funny. Every video of him telling a story from his past is a must watch! Again, thank you, this reaction was lovely.
Great reaction, I was waiting for it! I think that calling the dog as 'bitch' is strange, but if that's the exit the subtitle's writer found to make sense on the misunderstanding, that's ok. The body language and the very regional accent of the actors makes the movie funnier to brazilians, it's very relatable, but it's nice that it could be enjoyed without these references. The author (Ariano Suassuna) said in some conferences: "I love liars, not the kind of liars that take advantage of people, but liars that love the art of lying", and you can see that in the stories of Chicó. 😂
@@Madvisionn It's 'cachorra' (a female dog, where 'cachorro' is the male). Since 'cachorra' can be used as a swearing towards a woman to imply 'bitch', the misunderstanding of the major and the priest happen. It's the same as 'vaca' (cow), that can be used for the same intent.
Probably some people already told you about the fact that the movie screenplay have been adapted from a play script, written by Ariano Suassuna in 1955, and also that this was not originally shot as a movie, but as a TV Show, produced at 1999. There is a lot of specific jokes or subtle and ironic social criticism you could miss because of the dialect spoke by the characthers that is mostly used at the Northeast region, where I live, here in Brasil, so by translating it to english a lot gets lost, of course. The idea really is to not take it too serious, but there is A LOT of serious things being discussed throughout the movie, such as power relations, how money rules those relations, at most of the time, and how the nobility concept still got deep roots into small cities, as you can see when the priest agrees to bless the bitch when he knows it belongs to the "Major Antonio Moraes" but refuses to do the same for the animal that belongs to the baker and his wife, although they are also rich. He is a "Colonel", which is how we used to call the landowners back in the day when our country abandoned Monarchy and became a Republic. People that really had the political and financial power away from the urban centers (which were pretty small in Brasil at the time), along side the "nobility" status, even though it was not a structured thing with counties and duchies... They used to reinforce their influence by using the exchange of favours or by the use of strength, you already know how, and that way ensuring that his allies or themselves could get the votes to stay on hold of practical political power... That relation and practice is known as "Coronelismo", when Brasil was in fact a Oligarchy Republic, and the "Colonels" were integral part of that Oligarchy. Really happy that you took a bit of your time to watch it and specially happy that you liked it and laughed a lot.
Another Brazilian humor film that became the highest grossing film in Brazil is "Minha mãe é uma peça" it is a very funny and touching film, it is very worth watching
And it is filmed in my town! Niterói with out beloved actor Paulo Gustavo! Niterói is on the other side of the Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro and they are connected by a 13km cement bridge and a ferry service...
Brazil mentioned! Regarding the joke about the service for the dog being ministered in Latin, it's actually a pun with the portguese verb for barking: "latir".
this is a true brazilian treasure, so much is lost on the translation, like the regional expressions and the accent, but i'm so happy people from out of here can enjoy it. this is originally a play by a famous brazilian author, turned to a series and then to a movie. it shows part of the culture in the northeast region of brazil, who used to suffer a lot from the drought due to its desert like climate, with a lot of greed and regilisioty, just as anywhere, and Ariano plays it with smart irony and sarcasm. it's kinda old and was filmed long ago but it's truly a masterpiece, every brazilian household stops to watch when it's on tv

3:14 It all happens very quickly because the film is actually the cut of a 4 episodes tv show. The TV series was so successful that they decided to scale it back to release it in theaters. This is the favorite national film of most Brazilians (myself included). The movie is excelent, the tv show is better.
This film is based on a play that was made as a sort of "Brazilian northeast spin-off" of an old Portuguese play called "Auto da Barca do Inferno" (Act of the boat of hell) that describes the final judgment of a diverse group of people to decide if each of them is going to heaven or to hell (ergo the final part of this movie). This story takes a lot from Northeastern Brazilian culture, like for example during your reaction you talk a lot about how fast-paced the movie is and about the incredible stories they tell and how the main character is so smart and just makes up things on the spot, and those are some characteristics of some forms of literature and music of the Northeast of Brazil (more specifically "Cordel" style literature and "Repente" style music). Also the bad guys that kill everyone are "cangaceiros" and their lider is "Lampião", and this group of people were very much real. They were like pirates, and their liders, Lampião and Maria Bonita, are like the Bonnie and Clyde of Brazil. And funny story, I actually met Lampião's nephew personally, he is about 90 years old now.
:) Thanks!
I remember watching the series that became before this movie, and it was even more hilarious. The thing I love the most about this story is that it's not in Rio or São Paulo - Brazil is huge, and there's so much more culture outside these two cities. It portrays the reality of the biggest part of our people: not paradisiac beaches, but poverty, and the only thing that helps us in the struggle of the difficulties: humor, friendship, love. That's why Brazilians are so well known for being so warm and smiling all the time, it's in our blood.
The ending is my favorite part... Both are typical good people trying to survive. I love the author of the book that the movie is based on... he's great.
This is the most beloved movie here in Brazil, nice choice man, and you get it!!! You should watch ''Lisbela e o Prisioneiro'' next, but idk if it has subtitles though...
"It is a theatrical play in the form of an Auto in 3 acts, written in 1955 by the Paraíba author Ariano Suassuna. Being a drama from the Brazilian Northeast, it mixes elements such as the tradition of cordel literature, comedy, traces of the Brazilian Catholic baroque and, also, popular culture and religious traditions."
5:26 It seems we have a mistranslation here. Bitch can be translated as female dog (cachorra) in Portuguese, but in Brazil it is also slang for naughty, dishonest woman. When they translate it to bitch/bitchie (cachorra/cachorrinha), if they are referring to the dog in the film, it should be puppy.
Lovely reaction, the best gringo's (foreigner's) one on A dog's will I've ever seen. And that's not due to prejudice from the others, at least not mainly... The thing is you're an open minded, good hearted, cultured guy, which can grasp meaning, reasoning and sensibility even facing deeply rooted regional differences. Thanks for it. Just loved!
"O Auto da Compadecida" é uma dramaturgia criada por Ariano Suassuna, uma obra teatral muito encenada aqui no Brasil. Aliás, há anos, eu e meus alunos do ensino médio em aulas de Arte, a adaptamos em leitura dramática. Fico muito feliz em saber que, po intermédio do ótimo filme, pessoas de outros países e culturas a conheçam.
Some Brazilian dramas and books use the cleverness of a character or an aggregate of unexpected events to move the plot forwards. This movie uses both and it's so much fun!
It is interesting how you are recognizing the cast. Probably next time you watch City of God you will realize Jack in this movie was "Carrot" (Matheus Nachtergaele).
this movie was actually a mini series. and it was based on an amazing book. joao grilo(jack cricket) is one of the best scammers with a heart of gold in fiction, so well written, and with such hilarious schemes. but its amazing how its so fun and light heartedly and then it cuts to a very depressing and realistic moment, before becoming a literal divine judgement. and by the end, probably the best part, was how the talltales that are nonsensical and basically too insane to be real. may actually be true stories.
You discovered the best way to gain engagement on the internet: react to Brazilian things 😂. It's really complicated for those who don't live or know the history, religiosity, verbal expressions, the culture of the simple man in this region of Brazil and its stereotypes. It is a literary work by a great author (Ariano Suassuna) who portrays the interior of northeastern Brazil in past decades with lightness and poetry. I could use an expression from the corporate world here: "it's an inside joke" - "piada interna". Added to this, there is a theatrical component to the production that turned into a big fun party for good and popular Brazilian actors who had as much fun as we did.

Interesting that you said that it felt like a play because originally that's what it was
At the end of the year the sequel will be released. Everybody here is hoping to be as good as the first one! Thank you for respectfully enjoying our cinema!
This Movie is a cut from a brazilian TV series, that is an adaptation from some Theatric plays and novels, all wrote by Ariano Suassuna. The style and aesthetics, just as the way the novels and plays were writed, are from the Armorial Movement, created to preserve the Medieval Iberic heritage to the northeastean Brazil. That's, really like magic, spacially because it really mixes the divine magic fantasy from Medieval catholic traditions to the actual habits of the interior brazilian people in last century. That's a great movie, but the series is even better, because there is much more happenings, plots and it's even more fun!
You should try "Mangue Negro". It is a horror movie, with great practical effects. It really shows the Brazilian knack for making do with what little resources you have
Hi! An "Auto" is a very long play that is about a religious figure. That's why we see some, at the end. "Compadecida" refers to Mary, it means "forgiving". If you can, read from or watch interviews by Ariano Suassuna. He's the author of the book, and he is insanely funny.
Now imagine growing up watching it on tv. It was chaos and pure fun when we did not have the age or knowledge to understand and even better when we finally understood it.
This movie is so loved by brazilians because it's the best portrail of how it is to be brazilian i had ever seen. The latin sacred and the profane thing, the stereotypes, the anthropological concept of a brazilian "jeitinho" on joão grilo character, the classical overacting from the novelas that to me shows that in brazil you need to be exagerated in order to be heard if you are subtle you're not convincing enough, this is pretty much how brazilians see life packed in one movie and every brazilian feel very represented in there. i can say with no fear to be wrong that you can only really feel this movie if you're brazilian
There's a lot of culture packing in this movie that can only make sense to a Brazilian but I'm so glad it remains fun to a foreigner. The author Ariano Suassuna was an incredible storyteller even live.
Thanks for reacting! Its not because I'm from Nordeste (Northeast), but in my opinion, this is the best Brazilian movie ever! If you like children's movies, I recomend "Menino Maluquinho", 1995, based on the cartoons of Ziraldo, very famous, and "Castelo Ra Tim bum", 1999. Those were some of the best movies of my childhood. We also hace great movies based on real stories: "Elis", one of Brazil's best singers ever, Elis Regina, deceased in 1982, "Gonzaga, de pai para filho", a story about Luis Gonzaga, also singer, "Nise, no coração da loucura", about a psiquiatrist that succeded in humanizing the care of patients with mental disorders with art, "and "Pureza". Oh btw, where are you from? Cute accent 😊
Originally this is a Theatre Play writed by Ariano Suassuna. This play was read in literature classes and is one of the greatest we have here. It was adapted as a mini series and lated edited as a film.
I was really amused by your reaction. 😂😂😂The film that I recommend and is rarely mentioned, O Homem do Futuro (2011), with Wagner Moura, the same actor who played Captain Nascimento in Elite Squad.
This movie is so intimately Brazilian, especially for northeast folks, that I am so curious to see someone outside our culture to react to it I truly believe Auto da Compadecida can only be fully 100% understood by people who lives or relates or see this reality shown, I love it very much

what is the actual translation of the dog?
@@Madvisionn It's 'cachorra' (a female dog, where 'cachorro' is the male). Since 'cachorra' can be used as a swearing towards a woman to imply 'bitch', the misunderstanding of the major and the priest happen. It's the same as 'vaca' (cow), that can be used for the same intent.
@@Madvisionnbitch in the sense of female dog is fine, the problem is it's hardly ever used with this purpose anymore 😂
Sim
Niterói is on the other side of the Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro and they are connected by a 13km cement bridge and a ferry service...

this is a true brazilian treasure, so much is lost on the translation, like the regional expressions and the accent, but i'm so happy people from out of here can enjoy it. this is originally a play by a famous brazilian author, turned to a series and then to a movie. it shows part of the culture in the northeast region of brazil, who used to suffer a lot from the drought due to its desert like climate, with a lot of greed and regilisioty, just as anywhere, and Ariano plays it with smart irony and sarcasm. it's kinda old and was filmed long ago but it's truly a masterpiece, every brazilian household stops to watch when it's on tv
im not sure it's shown on my comment but im really glad you're watching it!! lol sorry for the typos btw
Adorei o react
this movie is so fast paced, it's a perfect representation of how quickly things happen and people talk in the northwest
This is probably my favorite movie of all time. It's so Brazil. Unfortunently only a Brazilian can fully understand it.
História maravilhosa do incrível Ariano Suassuna.
❤️❤️❤️

Brazilian here. O Auto da Compadecida is a masterpiece! Everyone has to see.
The film is the adaptation of a Brazilian Play!
I love Ariano Suassuna (the author), love this movie, actors and actress, and love this naivety. Everything is beatifull...
Yes.
But since Blindness (2008) is more know the international community might not expect much of humor from him.
@@AramatiPazBlindness isn't his. It was José Saramago. Wrong author, wrong country.
Jack the Cricket/João Grilo could very well defeat Thanos by tricking him
5:26 It seems we have a mistranslation here. Bitch can be translated as female dog (cachorra) in Portuguese, but in Brazil it is also slang for naughty, dishonest woman. When they translate it to bitch/bitchie (cachorra/cachorrinha), if they are referring to the dog in the film, it should be puppy.
Ele imitando a Dora kkkkkkkkkkk eu tô passando mal 18:38
Lovely reaction, the best gringo's (foreigner's) one on A dog's will I've ever seen.
And that's not due to prejudice from the others, at least not mainly...
The thing is you're an open minded, good hearted, cultured guy, which can grasp meaning, reasoning and sensibility even facing deeply rooted regional differences.
Thanks for it. Just loved!

I CANT BELIEVE YOU'RE ACTUALLY WATCHING THIS MOVIE. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
"O Auto da Compadecida" é uma dramaturgia criada por Ariano Suassuna, uma obra teatral muito encenada aqui no Brasil. Aliás, há anos, eu e meus alunos do ensino médio em aulas de Arte, a adaptamos em leitura dramática. Fico muito feliz em saber que, po intermédio do ótimo filme, pessoas de outros países e culturas a conheçam.
And this year we'll finally have a continuation!! Auto da Compadecida 2 is coming!!!
Thanks for show ours movies, this one made me so proud fo being brazilyan!
@MadVision, the author, the late Ariano Suassuna, was a superb writer. Totally recommend his works.
this movie was actually a mini series. and it was based on an amazing book. joao grilo(jack cricket) is one of the best scammers with a heart of gold in fiction, so well written, and with such hilarious schemes.
but its amazing how its so fun and light heartedly and then it cuts to a very depressing and realistic moment, before becoming a literal divine judgement. and by the end, probably the best part, was how the talltales that are nonsensical and basically too insane to be real. may actually be true stories.

O homem que desafiou o diabo
It's really complicated for those who don't live or know the history, religiosity, verbal expressions, the culture of the simple man in this region of Brazil and its stereotypes. It is a literary work by a great author (Ariano Suassuna) who portrays the interior of northeastern Brazil in past decades with lightness and poetry. I could use an expression from the corporate world here: "it's an inside joke" - "piada interna". Added to this, there is a theatrical component to the production that turned into a big fun party for good and popular Brazilian actors who had as much fun as we did.
Excelente!

Hello, I'm very proud to be Brazilian, I really liked your reactions, I'm following you now and I recommend watching "Lisbela and the Prisoner", another Brazilian comedy.

I've never laughed so hard at a reaction like that! 19:28 "Oh Jesus, let me see" hahahahahhahahah
This year we will have the part 2. Auto da Compadecida 2. We in Brazil are so exited!!! This is our masterpiece, it's historical to have a second one ❤
In portuguese of course it have a lot of nuances and very funny jokes almoust imposible to translate. You can read the book of this piece :)
omg, it's SO AWESOME to see someone from outside of brazil reacting to this movie!!! the first time i watched it was in school when i was a kid (probably 10 years ago), learning about brazillian authors and literature. everytime i watch it again this movie gets funnier hahahha
great to see you having fun with something that is so dear to us brazillians ❤

I remember watching this as a kid with y family in Brazil
My guy, the moment i saw this, i FREAKED OUT
You found a goof movie to watch. Brazil approved
By the way, the series has also a fast rithymed edition, but it is a little slower.
Wow, I never thought I'd see Renato Russo reacting to this movie!
LMAOOO
Now imagine growing up watching it on tv. It was chaos and pure fun when we did not have the age or knowledge to understand and even better when we finally understood it.
Invocou os brasileiros? Aqui estamos
Congratulations on this reactions!! Auto da Compadecida one of brazilians classics cinema. Kisses and hugs from Brazil. Beijinhos e abracinhos.
Ótima descrição!
Love to see people from other cultures having fun with this piece of chaotic art
You need to watch Bacurau!!!!!
There's a lot of culture packing in this movie that can only make sense to a Brazilian but I'm so glad it remains fun to a foreigner. The author Ariano Suassuna was an incredible storyteller even live.
I think EVERYONE I know here in Brazil loves this movie/series. The fast paced dialogues are so funny. I wish the world could watch it ❤
Thanks for reacting!

This movie is so intimately Brazilian, especially for northeast folks, that I am so curious to see someone outside our culture to react to it
I truly believe Auto da Compadecida can only be fully 100% understood by people who lives or relates or see this reality shown, I love it very much
