Do not dispense with the metal sleeves. They are there to shield the rubber boot from high heat of exhaust manifold!

This is the way ... and pliers type spark plug removal tool.
I happened to have the wheel well liner off as I was replacing the upper and lower A Arms at the same time. Glad I did the plugs while it was off.
One inch extention and lay across the engine and cyl. 8 is pie.
Changed mine yesterday. At 62, it kicked my but but got it done in 4 hours! AC Plugs and opted for NGK because they were free. I used a GearWrench short magnet swivel. And yes, I did change #8 !!
Great job, yeah the owrst part is Ab/stomach painnfrom leaning over the radiator/engine, etc.

This video answered so many questions for me even being this old, my fathers been a mechanic with FedEx for almost 30 years and still got a headache from tryin to get the #8 spark plug and wire off. We ended up giving up on it and the one next to it but I’m gonna try and change it out tomorrow, wish me luck 👍🏼
Good luck. If you buy new wires ahead of time you dont have to be as careful either. Because if you break.the wire you have extras.

Are Jay, I changed 7 Spark Plugs in my 2011 Tahoe. I was hoping I could find out who the 'Engineer' was who placed that #8 Plug in such a ridiculous location. I want that Clown to do a Video and show Us how to change that Plug... Great Video!

i am that dirt floor, backyard, creeper stuck in the rocks, can’t even sweet talk even my truck’s engine bay in to my 8x9 garage bc who’s idea was an 8x9 garage anyway (?), DIY shecanic & sometimes, (most times), i find myself in a very heated brawl with some part on the truck that does this kinda BS.
so, i arrived to this project after the roadside assistance fella - who, in a very genuinely kind hearted attempt to assist me after i kinda accidentally overfilled the ATF after rebuilding my VB - had surmised with me what was actually us both mistaking the symptoms for an under-fill & he was being a good human & trying to help & was pouring a small bit of ATF in the dipstick & had a whoopsie & kinda lit my engine bay on fire for a good 2 seconds & so that was terrifying & so needless to say - truck got towed home. thankfully the only damage was the rear most passenger spark plug wire & hardly but any damage needs replacing (esp after you know, like, a fire) so… in theory, this sounded like an easy job to me… no. easy job, impossible task. i about lit it on fire again & threw myself in the dumpster that it has become.
but then i found your video so thanks for this.
even after the fire. i’m doing it my damn self.
if i had the money i wouldn’t have an engine that catches fire anyway, so.
all in good fun.

Hey Lex thanks for watching. We are in the same boat. I have on occasion got the back end in the garage to work on shocks/suspension but would have to go inside and out the front door to get around front if I need anything.
I actually annoy my wife with every few weeks or so, call her to look and say if it was just 1 foot wider we could do so much stuff in our garage. But unfortunately that is not in the cards for us.

I just changed the plugs on my 2012 suburban 5.3 did them in 45 min
Only used swivel socket and wrench
Trick I used to remove the boots i spin them with my fingers and they popped off after a couple of turns
Only cut my finger a bit

Good video 👏 I respect that you don't claim to be a mechanical genius, but point out the fact that mechanics and shops rip people off, because 99% of them do 👍 This video definitely makes me want to try to do mine on my truck
It really not that bad, just lay a cushion over the engine so you chest and stomache dont hurt. Also make sure you buy new wires ahead of time, because their is a good chance you will pop the boots off when pulling them.

Thanks for the Video. I had the same tool to remove the metal boot but I found it easier and faster to use right angle pliers. The trick is to pull on the pliers while also pulling off the rubber boot. Hopefully, this helps someone else.
That last plug boot can come off in about 5 seconds by squeezing it with a pair decent needle nose pliers and prying it out using the exhaust manifold as the fulcrum.

I just did mine yesterday. It was no where near as difficult as this video makes it look. I just used a hose plier and pulled on the boot. the heat shields and all popped right off. Also able to get the #8 from the top, but I had to lay on top of the engine. If this job is too hard for you, you are not qualified to be teaching it.

Lol your actually correct I’m doing it right now and all I did was pull the wires of with my bare hands lol with a little twist of the metal to the left
But question I’m having trouble matching up the holes and tightening the 1st passenger side spark plug .. it’s righty tighty correct? Lll it won’t catch

Man I just got thru doing spark plugs and wires on a 07 Silverado and what I had to do was get a pair of pliers and pulled the wires out with the pliers. Of course the wires broke then I was able to pull those heat shields off. I also had to use the pliers to pull the connector of the plug so I could use my socket to get the spark plug.

My tahoe is lifted and all but the 8th is super easybto get too but #8 still looks like a pain but goin to tackle it soon
What about anti seize on the plugs and grease on the boots.
Just doing it right now n my tahoe dont have the metal booth,but the new wires does,so kinda undecided if i should keep them on or not,cuz none of the old ones gave me problems without them
Mine have been fine without the metal boots, so I personally wouldnt ad them especially since yours already didnt have them.

I tossed the heat shields for the plug wires, just replace the wires every year when i do my yearly tune up, and yes i know its over kill but its my truck😂
I thought the right side of the engine was bad! The I seen the last plug on the right side! I’m dreading it tomorrow I hate it! I needed a crow bar for leverage to get the boot off. It’s a pain in the ass and could take all day! Thanks for sharing!!

You need a little bit of dielectric grease on each boot before you put them on
Bro you squeeze push an pull the shield no pliers needed the same since the early 90s
Sir, with all respect, there is a much easier way. Hose pliers and a bit of gentle wiggling is all it takes to detach the plug boots and heat shields. Put the heat shields back on the plug boots, they only slip over the plug boot and don't make a difference in difficulty of removing or installing the plug boots.

They are probably 'Engineers' that were called out, because they are White Collar Clowns with a piece of paper. They probably never work on the Crappy designs that they create. Are Jay sounded like myself, cursing out these Jackasses, lol.
At 14:16 I notice when you were placing the wires back in you didn’t have the metal boot back on.
I was thinking of doing this job myself but now I've reconsidered. I'll just keep paying mechanics to rip me off. Let them bust their knuckles. The last mechanic just replaced one spark plug wire in the back for some reason and I have a feeling they didn't change all the plugs either. $300 or $400 just to replace spark plugs.
Tired of you people saying we're ripping you off. It's costs thousands and thousands just to do this job. But when you need a little section of a water pipe replaced in your house and they hit you for $1,000 I don't see anyone whining. You people are clowns

You need those heat shields or your wires will melt
Nope, they can help in some instances, I have actually had the heat shield's press against a wire and melt cut through them, most older vehicles never had heat shields and were fine.
If I have heat shields still then I'm putting them back on. 😂

Just from looking at the tool and the spring it looks like the tool is made to pull back on the spring to allow the boot and metal case to come off. If you've ever tried to pull a spring off of anything when you pull on the opposite end off it it only gets tighter on what you're trying to pull it off of, it's like a Chinese finger cuffs. If you use the tool to pull the spring backwards you should be able to pull the plug off easily.........just my observation....just saying.....
this goof does not know if you do not use the GM metal spark plug insulators your wires will burn up!
