The anti-colonialist, humanist, sceptic themes of 70s Who in particular are so powerful. Made even more interesting when you delve into the backgrounds of Dicks, Letts, Holmes and Hulke. Great, subversive, ghettoised popular art that broke kids brains.

Yes, well put. I think that’s what I’m digging into. They were anti authoritarian

Absolutely agree, Paul. One of my favourite elements of Doctor Who was its rational stance.
As the Doctor himself has become more of a God-like figure, so the Universe seems to have to run to keep up, but this escalation is a dead end as far as I can tell
A cynical take would be it’s just easier to have magic drive a story, as an excuse for whatever shenanigans and potholes you can't be arsed to have to worry about....

I still have a bit of hope that this idea of Sutekh as a god will be either revealed as fake or deconstructed in some way in part 2, and that the rest of this 'pantheon' will recieve a somewhat similar treatment. Guess we'll have to wait and see however.

I think with the speech, as it’s coming from Sutekh himself, it can still play into the vibe of Sutekh believing or creating his own hype
Elon Musk is an obvious target for satire, but I think there’s a fun potential in a comparison with tech/business moguls, especially now someone like Elon Musk does have their legions of fans who will buy into his hype

I REALLY like that Marxist humanist take of Sutekh basically being the almost the equivalent of the British Raj and a satire of Colonialism (would fit with Doctor Who being a weirdly angry show that managed to hide it's message surprisingly well, even when you basically went "Helen A" and made it so crystal clear of who that was meant to be).
See, how I thought of it was that Sutekh was BASICALLY Torquemada from Nemesis the Warlock. An insane zealot who was chief of security who then took his insanity to the stars. And his sufficiently advanced technology couldn't save him from Death itself. Like I saw it as almost a hubris that self appointed Gods have to die eventually (nobody worships Toutatis anymore) and almost a jab against the likes of Lovecraft talking about "Even Death may Die".
Of course... It could still be sufficiently advanced technology. It is a show where a blue police box that's bigger on the inside and is powered by a collapsing star and has the ability to travel through time.
Love the channel Paul and thanks for the book recs!

In "Pyramid Of Mars" The Doctor was quite clear that, once Sutekh was free from the forcefield, he was all powerful and "not even our lot" could stop him! So, whether though technology or the natura; power of the Osirians, Sutekh was able to do the things that he now seems to be doing.
It's a theme of RTD's writing that he takes villains ultimate ambitions to their logical conclusion, hence the Daleks creating the reality bomb and The Master conquering Earth and totally humiliating The Doctor, and this business with Sutekh is in the same vein, for now he can turn all to dust, darknes and "find that good!"
As you say, though, "Doctor Who" though, has a tradition of taking apparently magical events and giving them scientific explanations, as seen in stories such as "Pyramid" The Daemens" and so on, and I find it interesting that a "rational athiest like RTD should go done this more fantasy based road!

You’re probably right about that of course, and certainly about the state of modern sci-if vs. 1970’s sci-fi, but I hate to judge a book before it’s ending. A lot is said about a villain in the final act and how he is dispatched. It had occurred to me that the spaceship at the edge of the universe in ‘Wild Blue Yonder’ may have been an Osiran ship. The pilot being a giant humanoid with the head of a horse. There could still be a reveal that The Wizard is just a charlatan behind a curtain.

Might it reflect a feeling of increased helplessness generally, of course including bullies/tyrants which are single, simple targets but issues like the rise of AI and the environment

I always got the impression that Sutekh, while posing as a God, still had vast godlike power that could work on a higher plane. His anger must have been considerable since he was stuck in a dead end time corridor for a small eternity. Roll on Part 2.

I still confused about when the Tardis was occupied by Sutekh. Mrs Meridew e.g. Mrs Meridew and the Tardis groaning happened in Wild Blue Yonder before the Doctor sprinkled salt letting through the Gods like the Toymaker. So was Sutekh already in the Tardis before the sprinkling of the salt and at what point did he arrive in the Tardis?

Just looked up Gaudete and have listened so far to three version's ; its Christmasish so Gaudete is in latin following up a translation but definitely mentions of certain themes and of course a Virgin Birth . In sign language version Gaudete has as its symbol the hard rock jackal type symbol . Persuing the Latin now . Something about the closed gate of Ezekiel being synonymous with the virgin birth ; ( basically) the womb ) through which you cant reverse and certainly not eat with any Pantheistic entities. That is enough for me . It's Christmas . We might even have a bit of Slade; who knows . It's all fun and a T.V programme in the end. I have always loved symbolism in art and literature and religion ; that's how my head is screwed on. My analytical side goes there everytime even in science .

To the rational mind nothing is inexplicable only unexplained. Like why has the green eyed donkey headed alien turned into a red eyed Bat Jackal? He was powerful but more powerful than the Toy Maker or Fenric or The Black Guardian? It would have made more sense to bring back The Beast. As he has the same voice as Sutekh and is less explored.

@@paulmagrs2474 The key thing about Sutekh is how fragile he was. He was so afraid that anything might destroy him he wanted to destroy everything to feel safe. An all powerful being would have no use for fear. Either as a protective impulse or as a thing to instill in potential rivals. Sutekh is afraid of the birds, fish, reptiles and even humans. As Hulk would say, "Puny God!"

Nice one ; the opiate of the people and all that but we can have both . Religions are not sacrosanct excuse the pun they meld and mutate according to who holds the metaphorical strings . Zuteh or Seth is still beholding generationally to Amun Ra or his current earthling man of influence. Squashed butterflies and scrunched cats cradles ; creation myths of every culture ; pop tastic . Pop , pop , pop and the number one music I am going for the Steeleye Span that call me Sue pet or the hippy requested , Acapella that still might need a few Ruby chords and tears in the desert of course . We have till Saturday to think about it. Anyways just finished that murder book Martin Edwards The Hanging Wood ; it's my on the buses book. The one good thing that came from it is St. Deiniol's Library Hawarden ; a real residential library . A holiday for just reading . (Wales) . How many more are there in Britain? P.S. You can take a virtual tour of St. Deiniol's ; looks lovely dont know about the expense though. The Nile river may run red with sediment and the cycle begins again. The colonisers may be omniverous butterflies . I dont know my brain hurts and Carla means Lily of the Valley . Generation of life in nature is much more complex than ours especially in the ocean and to the egyptian sky and sea are one. Now off up the Highland River again. Terence Dicks was an interesting thinker . We are limited in technology especially in video editing which is why Deforum is what I would like to see in Dr Who ; but we are not there yet. What is Susan's gift ? We had McCarthyism the witches of the present day ; othered big time . Father ; Mother Other is what the Doc said . Right back to my book.

Sounds like the end of Götterdämmerung. It’s a bit sad to think that people now wouldn’t want to understand what Wagner meant.
