  • Trofast cupboards and a few pieces of wood.
    Cupboard doors still to be added which will hide away all the trays.
    Can also be done with 'kitchen cupboards'.

      And lie on the bed in exhaustion! I'd had breast cancer surgery a few days before, and had a sudden need to build my son this bed. You know, as you know in crazy moments. I was due for a double mastectomy 2 days later, so needed to get it built ASAP!!!!

    I would've inset the mattress inside the bed, so its flush. that way the mattress doesn't start moving around.

    • @JamesJMMI
      @JamesJMMI  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A good suggestion indeed.
      We use Tempur mattresses, which are very heavy and don't move.
      The trade off with making the mattress inset, is the loss of space underneath. Our son wanted more space in his 'den', so we made it flush. Another option is to buy taller units... however this would have been a little dangerous with the ceiling fan :)

    I wish it was slowed down a bit. But she did an amazing job. Then when she added onto the bed to make it full size was brilliant. Use what you have so you don't have to dish out more money. Kuddos!

  • @JustOneLady
    @JustOneLady 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Just for the record:
    We started with a loft bed with a 21cm thick, long single Tempur mattress. The mattress was EXPENSIVE so I wasn't keen to part with it.
    When my son wanted an upgrade, I bought a king size bed and another (cheaper) 21cm thick long single, mattress. (2 x long singles = king) I also bought a 7cm king mattress topper to cover the join. Our horse-dog (he's big) was supposed to sleep on that side of the new King bed.
    Well, the dog wouldn't sleep on the bed, and the king bed took up half the bedroom. Meanwhile, all the toys (junk) that had come out of the original tardus of a loft bed were mocking me.
    So the idea of a platform bed made of storage started forming. Cupboards don't have enough functional space, so I went with trofast and all their drawers.
    The width of my Creation was limited by the window.
    I was planning to go to a mattress making shop to find some 21cm thick foam to make the rest of the mattress that noone (or dog) would be sleeping on.
    After I made the platform and chucked on the super heavy tempur mattress I was tired and couldn't be bothered to go to the store.
    Thankfully while I had a little rest, a had a brain wave and my tape measure kicked into action.
    My mattes topper was 7cm thick, so three slabs of that makes 21cm. Figured i was onto a winner! A king mattress is 180cm wide, which makes it 3 slabs 60cm wide.
    And by some miracle of the laziness gods, when you add 60cm of width to a long single, it makes a queen size bed!
    Which meant I could just steal the sheets off the spare room bed and I was done. I still can't believe my luck!
    Since the video, led lighting has been installed below. It's awesome if you're 10. Multicoloured, like a disco.
    I have installed a bookcase on the wall in the space below, added 2 x trofast units at the end (that I had to cut shorter) and put in some storage boxes. Still room for imagination and reading down there.
    The only thing missing is the cupboard fronts I will eventually put on...
    Then it'll be awesome!

      Hi, custom made 2 pack cupboard doors from a cabinet maker we know. If you build this with Ikea kitchen cupboards, I stayed of the Trofast, then you can just use their doors too. Turns out more expensive to use kitchen cupboards though, and no sliding bin space... but it is a simpler way to get doors.

      Nothing to squeak. It's a slat bed with a slat mattress. Very solid and quiet.

    How much weight can it hold and max people ?

    • @JamesJMMI
      @JamesJMMI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We've had 6 adults on it... so that was maybe 400kg. It's all about the wood you bolt to the wall, the frame and the slats. Use more wood and fixings to make it stronger... but I'm pretty sure you won't need it if you are using it as a bed :)

    can you install doors on the cabinets

    • @JamesJMMI
      @JamesJMMI  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. One option is to change the cupboards we used to the ikea kitchen cupboards which you can buy doors for. In our case, we wanted the sliding storage shelves so are getting a cabinet maker to build doors for them. Any door with the correct dimensions can be installed.

      Maybe you can make one but lower the mattress holding wood. Like, instead of matching the platform to the planks of wood, lower the wood planks so the mattress sort of is inside the whole thing. I don't know if you get what I mean tho xD

      They have drawers that go in them now, and you can put cupboard fronts on them if you don't want to see the drawers.

    anything taller than a 2-drawer night stand or 18" is too tall for a bed in my book. Loft beds are neat, when done right, but this isn't really a loft bed either. The Billy Bookcases turned on their side is plenty tall. The kallax shelves re too tall for a bed base. The Besta TV stand seem to be the right height but is more expensive than the bookshelves.

    • @BananeKiwi199
      @BananeKiwi199 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Then you can also buy a normal bed. The purpose of this is to have a certain height or more storage. The TV stand has the height and storage space of normal bed frames.
