  • Star garnets are found in two places in the world: Idaho and India. We went to Idaho near Clarkia to dig at the US Forest Service run Emerald Creek Garnet Area. This is a fee dig site ($15 for half-day, $30 whole day) that requires permits - purchased ahead of time online. Join us for the second half of the day at this unique location!

    Well that looked like a whole lot of messy fun! Some of those garnets were huge! It looked like you guys were killing it! and walked away with a score for the day! Awesome fun! Thanks for sharing!

      Yeah we did all right! Last year, my wife and I combined for about a pound, and this year I had almost that much just from the afternoon. It's definitely hit or miss what you come away with!

    Now that looked like loads of fun. Messy, but that's half the fun anyway. Those are pretty nice sized ones too. 1.4 oz and 2 oz are monsters!

      It's hard work but worth it! My only regret is not filming the biggest find of the day. One guy found a 5 oz garnet!

    Great video, and you found a lot. I know it is super hard when it is muddy. I was there last June and it was so hot and dry. I'll have to check out your video how to cut them. Thanks.

      We went last July and it was hot and gross for us, too. They were also having water troubles so the sluice was running real low and it took longer to clean. Despite the mud I much preferred the cooler weather!

    Going this weekend. Looks like now it’s just 3 hours and it was $16

      Yep, $15 plus a dollar service fee gets you three hours. So if you want to dig all day, you have to buy two separate passes.
      Here's a tip, though: No matter what your reservation time is, show up at the earliest ticketed time anyway (8:30 for the morning or 12:30 for the afternoon). If your ticket is for, say, 9AM, you're not going to get an extra thirty minutes after the 8:30 people are done. Everyone stops at the same time.
      Good luck on your dig! They refreshed the pile after last season and I hear it's been productive.

      I cut and cab them myself, but only a couple.

    How much are these worth after cut and polished?

    • @DonohueLabs
      @DonohueLabs  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depends on the quality of the star and contrast with body color. Maybe like $5/carat for a good one, but that's a rough estimate.

  • @jonrubertas
    @jonrubertas ปีที่แล้ว

    also this year they lowered it down to two pounds

    • @DonohueLabs
      @DonohueLabs  ปีที่แล้ว

      Is that two pounds per day, or for the whole year? I have tickets for later this year, I should probably look into that!

      @@DonohueLabs i think a ticket. They are also limiting tickets. We had two one for sat and one for sunday and they made us cancel one of them as they were limiting them
