    Curious on what you look for in creeks and how you mostly find them. I live in Virginia by James river tons of creeks and opportunity but where do you start?

    • @Theditchwalker
      @Theditchwalker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I would start in the smaller tributaries...

    • @Theditchwalker
      @Theditchwalker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Look for feeders off the main tributary.,especially the ones that come out of higher ground.,and along ridges

      @@Theditchwalker by feeders do you mean drainage paths/weather creeks that feed into the tributaries? I live in the same area and I've found 2 points, a possible scraper, and what looks like sort of odd hand tools in my little creek. Do you have a source you use to identify hand tools?

    • @Theditchwalker

      Yes...small creeks basically....usually.,flake blades .,scrapers and such are indicative of the woodland period.thanks for commenting

    I am 53 years old been hunting plowed fields all my life, I seen this channel and I thought I have never thought about looking in a creek or the river right in front of my house. I just walked down to the river which has walnut trees lining the banks and I be dang there in about 6” of water the best nutting stone I have ever seen! I am making a floating sift and I am going to see what is there.

    • @Theditchwalker
      @Theditchwalker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Heck yeah..!...I hunted fields until I was about 20...a friend introduced me to creek hunting....at that time the creek hunters were only hunting larger creeks. After about 10 years of creek hinting.,I turned my attention to smaller tributaries and drainage ditches because no one was hunting them....Well.,you see the results....thanks for commenting

    My Papa born 1896 told us grandkids first job he had was plowing feilds with a mule and he was barefoot behind the plow said he stepped on so many arrowheads and sometimes one cut his foot he'd throw it as far as he could . I like finding them so many it's just nice to get outside.

    Me and a buddy found a well used deer crossing on a small creek in East Texas that was perfect for a blind. We took several deer there with our bows and found several stone arrow heads in that same location over the years. It seems that hunters hundreds of years apart still know a good location when they see it!

      @@IratePuffin This was on public hunting land where you need a permit to trespass. They have cheap a non-use permit that allows year round trespassing (camping, hiking and etc) but no hunting or fishing. Look up Texas Parks and Wildlife public hunting lands online. You can download their maps to see if you want to explore them before buying a permit. Just don't go there during hunting season for obvious reasons. Hope this helps.

    I liked your comment about “staging” things. It is crazy how powerful running water can be, but then be so gentle. I was out on the Wabash and found a mercury dime on river bank after water went down. It was sat neatly on a rock, heads up, it looked like someone just sat it down. That jug was great too, can’t say how many of those I have found broken, never a whole one. Good luck in all your adventures

    I had over 100 arrowheads mounted on presentation boards I found as a kid. Had them stored upstairs in a furniture factory I owned as an adult. Some sorry bastard I was paying to work for me stole them. Hours and hours of walking corn fields gone. Probably sold for nothing to buy some crack. Makes you hate people.

    Just wanted you to know, I have watching your channel for about 10 years, hunting for 30, always a field or digging in a field, never thought about creeks or didn't have access. Family friend gave me permission to their farm, and it was on from there. Some average points, then a G10 Abbey, then, My best piece, a G10 1st stage Lost Lake, took it to a show, they offered me 2500, but I still have it. So basically you got me to start looking creeks and that's where I found it. At that time all I had was a camera. Just started a channel recently. My creek hunting is limited to 3 creeks, but I love to dig and have more access to that. So thanks for sharing and getting me on the right path, it's been fun. Good luck on your next adventure.

    I just found your channel and I am very glad to have done so!
    I grew up on Vancouver Island off the coast of British Columbia.
    We did not find too many points or tools though they were encountered and we did find a few but part of the indigenous history was uncovered when the gravel beaches along the north coast were cleared of the gravel over clay (small sections) to find footprints still in the clay, protected by gravel for over 14000 years.
    I can't imagine your good fortune in living in an area that allows you to find such indications of human activity from so long ago. Do you ever feel humbled by the past?
    How did you get involved in this hobby though that is an inadequate word.
    I hope to learn more from you as I go back through your work. Cheers from Canada!

    Lost all my arrow heads and other various artifacts in a fire. Collected them all from a cornfield100 feet from my home growing up. If you go out in the spring to this day you can still find things. The story was there had been a Indian village where our home was. Had a small river 200 feet from house.

    None of these are staged, I can tell. Random flake pattern, textbook late archaic points coming out of Mississippi. A place where if you find the right creek, you can pull out points up into the double digits. Good stuff.

    Great video, I used to do this when I was a kid near my little local creek and in cornfields, but the only luck I ever had was on my own property. I found 2 very nice points and the twin to the blade that you found at 1:30 of the vid. Mine has the same large notch on the top that yours does and the same unusual ovoid shape. It fits comfortably into either hand and it's sharp! I had the opportunity to show it to an archaeologist and he said it was Late Archaic. I live 800 miles north of you in Southern Ontario.
