  • This trip was a fun rare chance to go rockhounding at a private location for Star Garnets. Like most gem material, it doesn't look that great in its raw form, and to really appreciate the gem it needs to be polished.
    Thanks for watching!

    Good haul. I found that with a dremel and wet sand paper you can get a great polish on them, takes a bit but, then you can roll them around in light to see where the star rolls while facing you directly mark it and slice in half and you have 2 good cabs for the lapidary machine.

    Looks like you were a few miles away from the public garnet area. I can tell by the amount of iron left on the stones. There are 4 gulches the have historically produced jewelry grade star garnet. The farther away you get the quality starts dropping drastically. Still, its cool to get in touch with a guy to get you some stones when our public forests are closed. I live in spokane valley, and if you'd like to see really nice grade rough or cut stones I'll gladly show you our collection. Happy digging!

    Oh dude I got pissed when I read the notification because I've been looking forward to going to the star garnet collection area for years, and just as I made the plans to go it ran out of garnets. This year the public place was set to reopen in may but is closed due to "the event" and I've been checking on it weekly to see if it'd reopen. Your finds look fantastic though, so if your guy ever opens up for digging give me a hollar so I can get on over there.

    • @CurrentlyRockhounding
      @CurrentlyRockhounding  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it's a bummer about the public location, this makes two or three years that it has been closed. Maybe next year it will be open again.

      If you dont mind me asking..i hope its not rude..learning etiquette still..where is the public area that you go to find your garnets..I'm new..and ppl are super weird about locations..even when open to the public ..which doesnt seem to be very many... and on top of it..you can get friggen shot and killed for going somewhere your not supposed to go. With that said..i totally get why ppl are very private..ive already noticed that ppl are assholes ..come in herds tearing and demolishing the land like locusts leaving nothing left in the ground. So whatever info your willing to divulge is deeply appreciated.

      These garnets are not very good for faceting because of the titanium inclusions. The titanium inclusions are what form the asterism or star. The best garnets for cabbing are garnets that have been broken naturally in half or thirds. When you begin to start cabbing, you'll want to dop the outside of the stone i like using a nail with super glue, and you work the broken side to see if the star is oriented in a fashion that will be desired after set.
