Beautiful 🤩

Look at those obsidian bands!!
Very cool video. Thank you, Sir.
Hello Erin!
More to come in this arena; I hope. Excellent work Patrick, thank you.
So........... Could it be dichroic like Tanzanite, maybe? Because that's kinda what my Zultanite (Andalusite) looks similar to.
I read in an other comment that the white powder used to make the mold is called investment powder. Is it also possible to use just regular plaster?
Investment is a mix of gypsum and silica. Plaster is mostly gypsum, and I think you need the silica to keep it from getting too fragile and maintaining fine detail.
I liked the fact that you did 'nt use a vacuum machine. That it also worked this way.
$8 in 1891 is approximately equivalent to about $219 in 2024. And $5,762 in 1891 is about $157,824 in 2024
Simple fix for reading the protractor angle. Drill a small hole near the end of the pointer and drop a piece of piano wire in. Bend a 90 toward the protractor and another 90 pointing up. Gives you a fine wire to sight on. For someone with D.I.Y. skills who thinks they might like faceting but doesn't want to spend $$$$ to find out this could be a good option to get started. I started on Jerry Wykoff's Profacee, which was even worse than this machine.
@patric the traytec has a vernier scale on the angle setting this should allow you to easily set 1/20 of a degree.
where is a good place to learn how to facet? Id love to learn more so I just dont make cabs all the time.
Beautiful job Patrick, they are awesome!! 👍😍👻🤪🌶
Looks interesting love to go one day
I have a much simpler method to lower the mast. Just put the adjuster on the top side upside down, and put a rubber band to hold the arm up instead of gravity holding it down. and you don't lose the fine adjustment.
Thank you for posting the step by step. I was wondering when you cut each angle on pavilion or the crown, how do you know you have cut enough? there could be 16 pavillion cuts but then how do you know when to stop? or do you do an outline cut first?
Almost every diagram I use is designed as a meetpoint cut. That means you cut the facets until they reach a certain mark, like the girdle or the intersection of two other facets.
So that's how they make laser rods these days.
Most laser rods that I've seen are made via Czochralski method, which is more like pulling crystals up out of melt rather than pouring melt on a seed plate. But it's a similar principle.
Exceptionally well researched and presented material with a high level of scientific rigor. Being very interested in fluorescents though, I'm very curious about that page in the 1973 magazine on "Fluorescent Collection At Adamas Museum". There appears to be exactly two other references to the existence of this place on the internet and no more. Both in postcard form. Maybe it was just in some dude's house? Is that an article or an advertisement?
"Adamas is a Lapidary Shop, Adamas is a Mineral Shop, and Adamas is a Museum - all dedicated to the enjoyment of the hobbyist." From the ad, it was located at 8391 Market St in Youngstown, Ohio called "Adamas Lapidary & Gem Shop"
@@DonohueLabs Only thing left seems to be the name of the strip mall left in its place. Too bad! Thanks for the info!
Unfortunately, there are several types of obsidian nodules that are being marketed as tektites. Obsidian nodules from Arizona called Saffordites are frequently marketed as tektites.
Excellent, thank you!
I think its color is pleasing. And the cutting is spectacular!
Nice to see you Dr. Donahue, I have been enjoying the rock hounding community for the last couple of years. I recently noticed you on Kyle’s website. I have been enjoying some of your videos. I am enjoying this video but I will need to watch it tomorrow to finish it. I will need to take another view of your site or get a stone you put on Kyle’s. I often think of doing this fun stuff but I have found I am turning 70 this year and losing my eyesight to macular degeneration. So I will just watch! Thanks
Thanks for watching, Vicky. There's an old saying in the faceting world, where the worse your eyes get, the better your polish looks! But seriously, sorry to hear that. Getting old sucks, I can sometimes feel it in my fingers after too long at the machine. Take care!
This is nothing short of incredible! The research, storytelling and visuals are perfect.
Thanks for saying that! I'm glad people are finding this as interesting as I do.
This is an absolutely superb documentary on the synthetic rubies. The research, voice overs, and interview is top notch (it was so cool to see Arya in your video!). Thanks for creating this resource, and hopefully many more, to share with the community. Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dr. Donohue, what a wonderful and well-researched bit of history, But it also left me scratching my head as to why there wasn't more investigation and science being acquired on the indexing of 'said' subject matter, (as was mentioned by Dr. Akhaven). Bravo Patrick, this presentation was very well thought out and delivered!
My wild speculation is that the synthetics market didn't exist like it does today, so there weren't people who wanted to spend money to research "curiosities" like these.
Amazing, Patrick! I appreciate how much research went into this, and how you make the story so understandable and entertaining. Thank you!❤
My pleasure! These are involved, but fun to make overall.
What a great video and very interesting topic. It is fascinating to see where the synthetic gemstone markets will evolve in the future.
AS always, a great documentary.
Those turned out Lovely Patrick
Amazing video, I really wish I had watched your video before I went over to Spokane area rock hounding lol I did tons of research and reading and went to the midnight mine, the reservation was all closed up no trespassing and didnt find much more besides some at the highnoon mine but it's flooded above the knee came home empty handed. There is some spots down by chiffdell this summer I'm going to check out for uranium minerals
I forget the name of the place, but Currently Rockhounding noted an area where you can buy a $4 permit to access an area with autunite.
Great work putting everything together Patrick
Those look great. Nice to see the raw and the finish gems.
How to contact you Patrick for Fixing chipped stones and removing surface inclusions ect.. ? Is that something you have done before repairs and re-cuts?
What is the smallest stone that can be faceted on this machine? I found some garnets and sapphires but they are around 3mm and I wonder if I can use such machine to facet them in a convenient way?
The size of the stone is only limited by the size of the dop. My smallest dop has a 1.6 mm diameter tip. However, I generally avoid cutting anything smaller than ~5 mm and very rarely go down to 3 mm.
@@DonohueLabs Thank you for the answer, but can you elaborate more why you are avoiding cutting such small stones?
@@pawefilocha4421 They're more fiddly in general and don't have as much interesting play of color or dispersion since they're so small. I also sell many of the stones I cut, and I can't compete with overseas cutters that produce tons of smaller stones for pennies on the dollar.
@@DonohueLabs Got it, thank you once again!
Anyone have a time stamp for when they actually start talking about where to find em? Thats why i clicked the video. But itnjust keeps talking about stuff i already know about. Id just like to know where i can start looking without bothering anyone
The black streaks are tiny lichens in the cracks.........granite is not quartzite.......thanks for the video....😊
Wow - beautiful.
That green!! The rings turned out exceptionally pretty. Thank you for sharing.
What is "Many Much Moldivite"? Is that where you buy them or something?
Haha no, just a silly way of saying I faceted a few. The main piece was from Kyle at World Of Rockhounds. He has a YT channel and does live sales most every weekend, and has moldavite for sale if you're looking to buy.
I like seeing the issues you came up against and how you dealt with them, they all turn out so beautifully.
Thank you! Yes, I think it's important to show when issues arise - and if you never run into any problems, it probably means you're not challenging yourself enough!
Those turned out so beautiful! Good job!!!
They look awesome, great video!
yay
