These are amazing!
Well done! Is there a link to Dr. Gunter's star garnet research?
@@richpayne6434 unfortunately, his article is print only I think (link to Extra Lapis garnet issue is in the description).
So interesting. Thanks!!
Good vid; very interesting.
Any corrections I'll post here: -I pronounced "Shoshone" how I thought the Tribe name is pronounced, but I guess the locals don't and say "Show-shown" instead. -Bechtel Butte is a syncline, not an anticline, but the rumor Nira heard about the garnets being bigger in the plane of symmetry still applies - just flip that anticline image upside down in your head.
Makes sense, the fold axis would recieve more mechanical stress than the limbs.
That was wonderfully edited and produced presentation Dr. Donohue. I rarely see anyone using "The Thirds" to inject whom is speaking, so for a guy that spent 3/4 of his life in the Broadcast Television Industry, I'm impressed. Well Done!
Thanks, John, though I'm not sure what "The Thirds" means lol
@@DonohueLabs "The Thirds" is a Broadcast term for the bottom section that unfolds/fades/swipes to present the name/location/title/information/etc. It's always on the bottom "Third" of a video/film/media prestation.
@@DonohueLabs Rocks Off Road is correct. You rarely ever see in any presentation the name of an Anchor Person or a "Breaking Alert" advisory (or whatever) up ontop of said visual... it's always in the 'bottom thirds' .
@@johnsaucerhunter oh that just seemed like the natural thing to do! Thanks both for the clarification.
Fantastic. Sometimes researching star garnets can be tedious but you really were able to capture a lot of that research in one place and interviewed people knowledgeable on the subject from several different angles. From each of those angles you showed us a star!
You are such a wonderful documentary-ist! The way you find people who are willing to take charge of the interview and clearly explain the subject. It's just wonderful! And makes for a interesting and informative documentary! Really well done! Thanks Patrick!
Nice video! Thx!
Really enjoyed this Patrick!
Love the intro 😆 your documentary videos are fabulous.
What a great Doc! You should enter it in the Big Sky Doc Film Festival!
Nice!!!
Mine never worked can’t even complete one rotation I have up and bought a flat lap
I have a question, unrelated to the video. Have you ever worked with moissanite (from the Gems of Science website) and why a 2-3 gram piece of rough worth the $12 in shipping in addition to the $37 that it initially costs?
@@aidankeller1717 I haven't, no, and haven't bought anything from them before, but it looks like they use priority mail which I assume is flat rate at ~$10.50 plus their handling time.
@DonohueLabs but is it worth it? It's like $50 total for a 2-3 gram piece and idk how many stones I could make from that. I really want to show Mike how crazy flashy moissanite is, especially the blue/yellow dichroic kind. I'm sure his reverse brilliant would go crazy with that material!
@aidankeller1717 "worth it" is too subjective for me to tell you what to do. If you're selling the cut stone eventually, I'll note they also sell cut moissanite at $40/ct so if you get at least a couple of carats out of the piece then you'd turn a profit (not factoring in your time). Or think about it as, if they used ground advantage shipping, it'd be like $5 and the total would be $42ish. Is that significantly cheaper enough to make you want to wait for another opportunity?
I love your cat!
I have a Facetron machine, cutting since 1990 and cut regularly in South Africa. Since we moved here in 1996 I have to work full time so don’t cut nearly as much here. I’m going to try this fabulous NEWS cut of yours! Recently cut my first Spellbound by Jeff Rhonemus. I really need to try a Gemcad type program to increase Brilliance. There’s a version that’s free now, is it as good as the one you’re using? Thank you for this great video!
@@elsabe13 I never tried GemCAD because I have a Mac and it's a Windows only program, but I know it was a very widely used program for years and would be a great way to dip your toes into the design world.
@ oh! We usually use a Mac too, thanks for the heads up, but I do have a regular lap top too - so I’ll put it on the regular one. Appreciate your video, the Spellbound took me longer than usual to cut, between a worn 600 lap, out of practice, unfamiliar new cut and I miss-judged how much stone to leave for the crown!
Thank you for sharing - I’ve been contemplating CAD - it looks like a great help!
This is a great idea. Where do you source cracked or chipped stones?
These ones are from Kyle at World of Rockhounds. He does live sales on YT most weekends. These were discounted because they were chipped. I haven't tried other vendors, but I'd be cautious of online shops selling cheap cut stones because some may try to pass off glass or synthetics as the real deal.
@DonohueLabs perfect, thank you!
Nothing like a little fossil ASMR 🩵 good job on the fossils and winning the award!
nice fish. How much time did that consume?
The main fish was a couple of hours a night for a few nights. Didn't really keep track but I'd say at least 6, maybe 8. Slow going with just a needle!
Howdy Dr. Donohue. Enjoyed your prepping and repairing video adventure. Was curious as to what your adding 'on to the fossil' after you have worked on sections of certain prepped area's? is it a watered downed "CA" concoction or other?
Oh I forgot to mention that this video! It's Paraloid B-72, an acryloid, dissolved in acetone. Stabilization isn't really needed for the fossils, but it helps with some of the more friable areas, and darkens the fish to make them pop more.
@@DonohueLabs TY sooo much. I have some Paraloid that I was going to use on some Meteorites, so it's good to know that it could be used on fossil prep too.. Thanks!
Thanks for the info!!

Would of liked for you to of ran it as it out of box maybe? 😂
Hey it is so unusual to find some one with the same spelling of my last name. Just a interested person in looking for rocks .
This video left me speachless. 😦
This video gave me a braingasm.
You should look at the black wax instead of the green for smaller stones
After you get some of these obvious little obstacles out of the way, go and cut your first "gem"... I suggest you go to the hobby shop and buy a little bag of marbles for a buck or two. Glass marbles! Go and try a few simple cuts using glass marbles! You will be surprised how much there is to learn in hands on skills, small details, there is a ton of little "tricks" and "ways to do it" until you end up with a fully polished glass "brilliant", a beautiful amethyst color glass brilliant. Once you have done a couple of those and "know what you are doing" as a beginner. Speaking for myself, I figured out how to put the facets where they belong reasonably quickly, but my biggest problem was and still is the polishing. As the Vevor machines are definitely unsophisticated, there is a silver lining, namely, you will have a worked out a bunch of common sense solutions in general gem facetting skills.

Thank you for the time and effort you put into creating a usable faceter, and the time spent documenting it for us!
Gorgeous
Thank for sharing
Lovely stones! Thanks for the info! 😎👍
Really enjoyed your documentary sir, your narrative reminded me also of it being in the vein of a Ken Burn's creation. Well Done!
Hi Patrick. Do you have tutorial how to make grinding wheel that you are using or it is not hanmade?
@@pereira1849 this is a faceting machine made by Raytech-Shaw.
So I've had great luck with my Chicago Electric tumbler which I purchased for $59. I've run mine nonstop from June 2023 to October 2024 and just replacing the belt for the first time this evening. Conversely, I bought a Lortone 33B in July 2023 for $139, and the motor burned out in July 2024 (it's been a pain to find a new one...). The Chicago Electric company has been bought out by Central Machinery (but it is the exact same tumbler, and I just purchased a new one for $79 last month). Great way to start in the rock tumbling hobby!!
There are some improvements on the CM machine... metal where it was plastic in a couple of places. VERY quiet !
saweet video dude I like the style you made and how you traversed the the path that led to a unique and steller stone. Good work. I'm just gonna start getting into all of faceting i've been rockhounding for years and have a good back stock of material.
so much gleam to glean
How much did you pay &&for the emerald?
I think that one was only like $19. Probably safer to call it green beryl rather than emerald.
@DonohueLabs thank you. Do you have access to this type of beryls? I'm interested in purchasing similar ones for that price. Thanks
@@MedullarisConus contact Kyle and he might have more, I showed his card in the video.
@@DonohueLabs thanks!
I enjoyed your presentation sir.
wow been finding rocks around the Columbia basin for years. have a beauty of a collection. thanks for the info.
As always, your videos are thoughtful, appear to have a production value as high as an investigative journal episode from like dateline.
That is a wonderful death plate! Good investment :)
