  • WKU PBS had produced a piece on the Wild Cave Tour several years ago, but since beginning to broadcast in HD, we figured this was one place that definitely deserved a re-visit. We loaded up two vans worth of our production students, promising them a day of adventure, and then put them in jumpsuits, and sent them into the cave. We lit the entire piece using LEDz LED lights that we ran off batteries, and then had fun telling the students to get as muddy as possible!

    Did the wild tour back in 1973. It was one cool experience. Fast foreword to 2024, I still remember it vividly. I worked for the Dept. of Interior in the late 70's stationed at Yellowstone National Park. I strongly encourage the younger generations to please take advantage of these National treasures. You will not regret it.

    I'll never forget the time we were taking a regular tour as a family when I was younger.... My dad was like "Oh that doesn't look good" and I look over at the hole that comes out into the dining area I think? Or around that- and the wild cavers were coming out of a hole EXCEPT they weren't because this guy was pretty heavy set looking was STUCK IN HOLE. He was half way out and sweating bullets. Cave employees started surrounding him to comfort him or keep the situation less visible, oddly enough, that made me want to do the wild caving tour even more. My dad, well not so much lol.

    Gosh, squeezing through those holes gives me anxiety just watching it! I’m way too claustrophobic for that. No way.

    I did this in 1976. Yep, you get muddy, and also covered in bat poop. :) It is scary, but wonderful! We had one guy that got stuck in the hole, so we who were below him and behind him had to strip him down to his underwear to get him through. :) True story, a bonding experience for sure!

    Did you see the hand that shows up in this video when they are in the truck as they are driving in Kentucky at almost the beginning? I was like whoa that's crazy.

    I'd like to do this tour. Problem is they require you to bring someone with you who is just is crazy as you are to want to do it. So if you have no friends, or your girlfriend/wife is stubborn as hell and wants to just stay at the hotel, you're shit outta luck.

    4:35 Good example of why you need a hard hard. I wish I was in better shape to try this. I've been to the Cave back in '90 and had fun on the regular tour. I think I'm due for another visit!

    Seems stupid they don't enlarge the tight spots

    • @Avalikia
      @Avalikia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, enlarging a cave can be a tricky proposition, depending. Sometimes you can't do it without destroying cave formations, so of course you wouldn't want to in places like that. Other times the rock that you would be removing would be load bearing and that can be tricky to assess. And then there's the matter of what level of accessibility you're aiming for - caves that pretty much anyone can go through safely and easily are pretty neat, but that would require putting in stairs and handrails and all sorts of things that change and to a certain degree spoil the natural aesthetic of a cave. So if changes are made to a cave, you need to figure out what your goal is with that: a tight space isn't a big deal to an experienced person - in fact it's a 'part of the fun' - even if it's a bit daunting for a beginner.

    Largely a promotional video. Largely devoid of informational content regarding cave geology, formation or history.

      Don't think that was their intent. They are a production team from a school. Production was their intent.
