  • Mammoth Cave is the longest cave in the world at 412 miles, and growing. This trip was conducted under a permit from Mammoth Cave National Park as part of a Cave Research Foundation expedition. For more information on projects led by CRF at Mammoth Cave and elsewhere, please visit: www.cave-research.org
    Caves are delicate and potentially dangerous places. For more information on wild caving, vertical caving techniques, and cave survey, visit the National Speleological Society website:

    Awesome vid. Thanks. Can't believe how large some of those passages are. Makes me want to bet back into caving.

    Walked thru this cave 10MAR19 and it was fantastic. The travel along the well trampled paths in an otherwise unspoiled cave is unworldly. We walked and walked then stopped in the middle of a gypsum flower garden. We had to hold our breath when taking pictures of the gypsum needles to avoid causing damage. That staircase to get out seems endless as there is no light at the end...just a dark building. Definitely one of the best places I will go this year.

    Great video as always. Two questions. What temperature is in the cave and what camera are you using?

      This cave is 13C (56F). I'm using a Sony A7iii with Sony 28mm f/2.0 lens on a FeiyuTech a1000 gimbal. I plan to do a tutorial video on cave videography in the near future and will review the video gear I'm using and why.

    Amazing video Derek, I noticed that you improve very well the ilumination . How do you did that?

    • @DerekBristol
      @DerekBristol  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Edson Martins Thanks! My last few videos have used footage taken with a Sony full-frame camera instead of my usual GoPro (formerly Hero 5 Session , now Hero 7). The low-light capability of the Sony is significantly better but the camera isn’t as small, rugged or waterproof as the GoPro. This video was lit with only a single Zebralight running at around 1000 lumens.

      Wow, it's amazing. The amount of light on your documentary is perfect , it looks that you used a other kind a spot light to do the job, but the zebralight was a surprise for me.

      Yes. It can almost see in the dark, though the A7Siii will probably be out soon, and will have even better sensitivity.

    Will you take my Ricoh Theta V on the next survey? Might make for some spectacular videos.

    • @DerekBristol
      @DerekBristol  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a Garmin Virb in Mexico (Cheve/Pena Negra) in March to capture some 360 video. Very interesting possibilities, but providing 360 lighting is a challenge, and most of the current 360 cameras have pretty poor low-light capability. Haven't tried the Theta V, but it seems to be better in low light than the Garmin. th-cam.com/video/Br_qYcq4RVU/w-d-xo.html
