Dr Joe. This is the best video ever for diabetic diet. I wish I came across it two years ago when I was diagnosed with diabetes with HbA1c of 49 mmol/mol, weight of 85Kg. The nurse advised me to stop using seasonings and reduce on salt intake. I tried intermittent fasting but it didn’t work as I work shifts. so I decided to eat like people from my village back home whose diet is plant based though not by choice and my HbA1c dropped to 41, weight dropped from 85Kg to 78Kg, target was 80kg. I went swimming twice a week and walked a lot. The nurse was amazed. My village diet is mainly loads of beans, lentils, leafy greens, millet, sorghum, sweet potatoes, yam, and cassava, maize meal and steamed green bananas and chicken or beef on rare occasions. I minimises on maizemeal and cassava due to its starchy content. I also ate plenty of fruits and vegetables. I was able to reverse the diabetes and avoided ever going on any medication. As I write this I am at 39HbA1c and weighing 74KG. My blood pressure is at 135/70. I am also doing the exercises from one of your videos for high blood pressure and it is working wonders. It depends on how long the IF lasts for. If it's a 24-hour fast, then doing it daily might be a bit of a stretch for a lot of people. But a 16:8 IF is fine for everyday fasting at least for a couple of months and when you have achieved your goal, you can limit it to 4 - 5 days a week
By vegetables oils do you mean the direct oils or even eating grounds nuts , cause has for me I fill hungry and am constantly eating roasted ground nuts though they make my belly full and increase by blood sugar but the drop when I exercise to about 8,9,10 and 11 mmol at times
I eat 40% carb , 35-40% and rest 20-25% protein of my 2000 calorie diet daily, walk total 5km (morning +evening ) , only papaya, musk melon, guava, eggs, meat ,chicken ,green veggies, millets and no to bread, white rice ,milk etc
Your videos are very informative. I have learnt a lot. Thanks for this video. Can you please give me a sample of what you eat in a day for all the meals. This will help me to make my daily meals. I crave for carbs being diabetic like rice and bread but I avoid carbs. Are chickpea flour and mung beans flour ok to eat and how much? Can I eat a cup of rice once a week? Thanks from USA.
Yes, chickpea and mung beans flour are fine so long as they are used judiciously in the recipe. Brown rice is fine too. Limit the quantity though. See my other videos for reference on the quantity

Thank you very much for this video. I am an African and it is very difficult to be completely on the first diet system because most of our main diets is mostly carbohydrate,so cutting down on carbs has been my approach. I would also want say that most of this diet can be expensive for many people and that is why people do include starchy food in their diet. Take for example a poor diabetic man or woman that canot afford Quinoa, lentis or othe low carb food, because the common and affordable food for many Africans contains lot of carb.what approach will you suggest for these group of people.
Hi Dr Joe. I just became a new sub after watching this video today. I did also watch part of your video on the 11 fruits diabetics or prediabetics should not eat (I am going back to finish watching the rest of that video shortly). Nonetheless, this video caught my attention, and I had to watch all of this one first. I was diagnosed with prediabetes recently, and I wanted to find out the best way to reverse it without being more confused than I was before watching this video. There is just so much conflicting information on TH-cam, and sadly even from local physicians on how to properly reverse prediabetes. I started a plan last week similar to your phase #2 approach; however, I was still adding a ripe banana in the rolled oats I cooked everyday to give it a sweeter taste. However, after watching your video I now know that ripe bananas are a no no for prediabetes. I also learned from you that there are several other fruits that I need to stay away from, due to there glycemic index. So, thank you very much for the great tips! I will definitely follow your phase #2 approach in it's entirety.
HI Dr Joe, thank you for sharing the different pathways. You said things that I have not heard before and make sense. I was diagnosed pre-diabetic Sept 2019, and immediately went on low carb (similar to keto). My AIC dropped to normal in 3 months and I lost 25 lb. My glucose will spike if I eat any rice, noodles or bread at all. I am in my 70's and very underweight. I desperately need to gain weight. What diet do you recommend for me to gain weight while controlling blood glucose? I discovered your channel yesterday and am starting the soleus pushup exercise. Seems to work! Thank you so much for your help.
Tricky one when you are trying to gain weight and control diabetes at the same time. A contradiction in terms. There's a possibility your diabetes is Type 1.5 in which case a small dose of insulin will be required to control your sugar levels and facilitate your weight gain. Type 1.5 is midway between Type 1 and Type 2. These individuals are usually underweight and yet do not have their diabetes under control. Introducing a small dose of insulin does help. Now, if you are not Type 1.5, then one way to gain weight will be for you to eat whole starchy foods, yes starchy foods like potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice, corn, quinoa etc (whole foods not processed starchy foods). But in doing so, you have to cut out all oil - vegetable oil and seed oils have to be weeded out of your lifestyle altogether
@@drjoetvMD Thank you so much for replying to me. I do appreciate you taking the time. "All oils - vegetable and seed oils". Is olive, avocado, hemp seed, coconut, grape seeds, sesame seed included?
@@sykusch Yes, if you want to reverse insulin resistance (and I mean make yourself more insulin sensitive), all oils have to go. Get your fats naturally. Olive oil by eating olives, flaxseed oil by eating flaxseeds, sunflower oil by eating sunflower seeds etc within reason. This is the not-so-secret little dietary manoeuvre that a lot of diabetics find it difficult to embrace. Instead they would rather go keto and make themselves more insulin resistant. They are just happy with the HbA1c that keto diet delivers when in actual fact they are making themselves more sick. Takes time to get used to, but you can cook without oils
@@drjoetvMD Thank you again, Dr Joe. I have not heard of this secret, but makes sense and does not sound too difficult for me. I definitely will try it. May God bless you for helping people stay healthy naturally.
Fantastic video as usual thanks so much for your kind work. Please my question is, if someone is on drugs for diabetics how can the person manage with intermittent fasting??
As you aren't eating then it would make sense not to use your medication for the duration of your fast. Otherwise your blood sugar will plummet (medication without food)
I have worked out my fasting from 12pm to 6pm. It changes at times because I've found, I'm not always hundry at those times. I eat when I'm hungry but only within my 8 hour window. I'm 70 and have been doing very well on the Keto diet. I have cut my fats a great deal and am doing even better.
@@drjoetvMD okay. I’ve been taking a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil in my breakfast drink in the morning. Maybe I should stop doing that. I’m sure it’s okay to cook with olive oil.
@@oiseaubleue345 You may if you want to but keep the amounts small. Really small. You want olive nutrients, eat olives not just the extract in the form of oil. Oil is making us diabetic and raising our BP

Dear dr Joe, thanks for your endless stream of videos concerning diabetes. I have a question: why don't we add fiber ourselves to foods with a high glycemic index to make the blood sugar levels raise controllable? Thank you and keep the good work up!! All the best, Erik van Rees Vellinga
@@drjoetvMD Thank you for your answer drJoe. But what I meant is for let's say pizza, the dough is made from wheat flour. Suppose you mix this flour with a certain amount of wheat bran before preparation, it would make the entire pizza a lot more healthy isn't it?

Happy Easter Dr Joe! Thanks for pointing me to this video. So I have had this problem for sometime where I urinate a lot at night. I have also noticed when I eat white rice, I could urinate like 9/10 times a night! It has affected by life and quality of sleep, like crazy! I have cut out white rice and also cut down on some food... but I still wake up at least 4 times to urinate . My test with the NHS has shown that my sugar levels are okay and I am not prediabetic. I have also purchased blood sugar monitoring system and I have been pricking myself to monitor. I have not noticed any abnormalities and results are within acceptable range. I am adopting the practise of stop eating or drinking after 6pm. Just started this 2 days ago and I still have frequent urination . What do you advice please? I am Male, 42 years old of African decent . Sorry for the long message! Regards
You probably have overactive bladder (OAB). You may need Urodynamics test to confirm that or sometimes we may just offer a prescription that quietens the bladder down without doing the test. It's a bit unlikely your prostate gland is enlarged at the age of 42 but your doctor could look into that seeing as you are black. A simple back passage (rectal) examination will to a large extent exclude that. The other possibility is you are probably consuming what I call bladder irritants. That's a very common cause. I shall do a video on that sometime soon.
@@drjoetvMD Thank you for the swift reply Doc! I will follow up on this I was thinking it might be enlarged prostate myself. However, I recently did the usual health screening/above 40yrs old screening . Following test were carried out - (Renal Profile, Differential white cell count, ,FBC, U+E+UREA, LFT, Serum Gamma GT level, Serum lipids, Se Prostrate specific Ag level, Thyroid function test, Bone Profile, Serum Vitamin B12, Iron, Serum Ferritin, HbA1c gel- IFCC standardised ) all were okay except the Total white cell count, which was slightly below minimal. I have been working on this, as I suspect this has declined due to my constant sleep interruption. Score is 3.73 when normal range is 4-11.
Drink bicarbonate of soda in room temperature water every evening about 1 hour before bed it worked for me. It is also excellent for urinary tract infections. It doesn't taste good so maybe use mineral water or drop a fizzy tablet in it you know those Vitamin Energy tablets. 🥰🌻🌠
Hello Dr. Joe, Your videos are great, very helpful. I fit into the pre-diabetic category. I spoke with a nutritionist and was given a low glycemic eating plan that allows for 1 serving of non-vegetable carbs per day. I would like to know your thoughts about this type of meal plan. I have had great results in the past using the Atkins diet but found it too restrictive and unsustainable. I did find during my time using the Atkins diet that I had more energy and felt a lot less sluggish due to the reduction in starchy carbs. Thanks for producing great content.
I love your videos and have a question, Dr. Joe. Beans, lentils, and legumes are recommended for better blood sugar control but they don’t seem to work well for us as the blood sugar levels increase significantly especially when they are cooked down nicely (and we can’t eat them any other way anyway). Even something as simple as cooked edamame tends to do that. Have you seen that in some of your patients?
The main reason for that is you are still very insulin resistant. And may be the way you are cooking the beans too and I'm referring to the ingredients used. The main offending ingredient being oil. You need to cut off oil from your diet - veg oils, seed oils have to go. That's one prerequisite. I shall do a video on that sometime soon
Beans are high in carbs that is why it raises your blood sugar. You should always balance with vegetables - dark green leafy vegetables. Black rice or diabetic low glycemic rice and portion your meals
I eat beans for potassium, red lentils with skin, green fava beans, black chick peas and mung beans are lower in carbs and high fiber. I sprout mung beans, supposed reduce carbs by 30%. I limit my portion and have it with Ghee. For me the fats keep the sugars in check. Soaking bigger beans like garbanzo, kidney beans overnight helps. Cook with garlic and ginger. I eat them alone only with veggies and paneer , no bread or rice. It is filling. Beans keep my BP under control. Add exercise 30 minutes after the meal . If you divide your carbs as separate meals it helps. Never combine carbs in a single meal.
@@WomanofZion953 Sorry, I didn’t realize I hadn’t responded to your message except hitting the like button. Thank you for your response; I also think that most beans are high in carbs, so although overall healthy, better eaten in moderation by people with poor blood glucose control. And as you suggested, great idea to balance it out with greens.
Hi Dr Joe, I'm prediabetic I've changed the way I eat and started working out 5 days a week. I'm still learning how to manage it. Also have high blood pressure and cholesterol. Is it ok to eat chicken breast with whole wheat pita bread as part of my diet? Thank you for helping us to manage our health.
@@goinker4life815 this person is speaking to the doctor. They are assuming because he is African he eats the starchy foods like fufu. Just stereotyping the good Dr. Joe.. not nice☹️

Dr Joe...i am looking forward to following an ever increasing plant based diet. Do you have a book on this process for us to follow? I saw a week 8 video, but not the week 1 and so forth.
You are sure you really want to gain weight? If you are, then eat lots more starchy carbs like white potatoes, sweet potatoes, and the grains. You need to eat more at a time. Bigger portions. But I worry your blood sugar control might spin out of control with that. Think carefully if you really want to gain weight or just maintain your current weight
Yes, it can. So long as you go really low fat. Eat less than 30 gm of fat a day, eat whole plant foods and you open up those those glucose channels making it easier for the glucose to get inside the cells

Is it bad to do IF daily? Tysm for all you do Dr. Joe you are such a blessing to all of us ❤
It depends on how long the IF lasts for. If it's a 24-hour fast, then doing it daily might be a bit of a stretch for a lot of people. But a 16:8 IF is fine for everyday fasting at least for a couple of months and when you have achieved your goal, you can limit it to 4 - 5 days a week
Thanks Dr Joe, for the lecture very informative 👍

Thank you, Dr. Joe, but green peas 🫛 has vitamine B6, but doctors say the cab level is very high.
Don't listen to them. Eat your green peas please. They are good for you. But you must look to remove veg oils and seed oils from your diet please
By vegetables oils do you mean the direct oils or even eating grounds nuts , cause has for me I fill hungry and am constantly eating roasted ground nuts though they make my belly full and increase by blood sugar but the drop when I exercise to about 8,9,10 and 11 mmol at times

Beans and Peas are cheap all over the world. They can have those
Dr , thanks . Can we eat Nigerian beans

You're welcome
May God bless you for helping people stay healthy naturally.

can you please give day routine for intermittent fasting
I'm not sure what your question is but the 16:8 fasting is what I recommend but of course you can push it to 20:4 if you feel up to it
Fantastic video as usual thanks so much for your kind work.
@Dr Joe, I understand olive oil is good for you and is the oil you should use. It’s the vegetable, canola, and seed oils you should avoid.
I have a more recent view on oils based on testing that I have been doing. You'll see where this is heading in the next 2 months. All of it.
@@drjoetvMD okay. I’ve been taking a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil in my breakfast drink in the morning. Maybe I should stop doing that. I’m sure it’s okay to cook with olive oil.

All the best, Erik van Rees Vellinga
Yes, you can do that for instance adding lots of broccoli to white rice
@@drjoetvMD Thank you for your answer drJoe. But what I meant is for let's say pizza, the dough is made from wheat flour. Suppose you mix this flour with a certain amount of wheat bran before preparation, it would make the entire pizza a lot more healthy isn't it?

Thank you Dr. Joe. What about if a type 2 diabetic wants to put on weight. Diet given by Diabetes Assoc. to lower numbers causing weight loss. Less carbs, 91lbs..underweight.

Yes I did very true . God bless

Not a bad plan. Watch this for more tips th-cam.com/video/6-eD7NpuS_4/w-d-xo.html
@@drjoetvMD Thank you, Dr. Joe, that was very helpful.
Thank you for this wonderful video. Just a quick question, can I eat cooked unripe plantain for diabetes? I'm prediabetic. I await your response sir.
