SERVICE MERCHANDISE!!! 🥰 What memories that brings back. They also sold jewelry, so 53 years ago, not having much money, but a lot of love, my husband and I proudly bought our wedding bands there. Forget about an engagement ring. His wedding band cost $12. Mine cost $9. You know what...the bands look a little worn, just like us, but we stayed happily married until he passed away. Goes to prove a long marriage isn't based on the amount of money you spend, but the amount of kindness and love you share. Still miss my guy. Sure enjoy your show. Thanks for the memories. 🎵🎼🎶
Hi Susan - what a beautiful story about your wedding bands and Service Merchandise. Thank you for sharing it! You are so right about money and marriage. Glad the video brought back good memories!
Hi Kevin Ralph amd Mary Ann, These cheese wafers as she called them were something She made every Christmas, I dont know where this recipe came from but as far back as I can remember She made these Mud Hens, a brown sugar bar cookie, Lemon Sours another bar cookie, and she always had dates stuffed with colored fondant, pink green or white with a pecan on top and always iced sugar cookies she decorated ,and she also made fudge, the kind with marshmallow cream, She was a artist so everything she did had a artistic flair, Eva Icenhour Powell, 1902-1988, Grandmother mixed these by hand as She never had a stand mixer only a Dormeyer Dormey portable.
Hi Hans! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! We couldn't stop eating these - so good! Thank you Eva Icenhour Powell! It sounds like you grandmother had a wonderful array of great reciepes. Funny how many never had a stand mixer and did just fine with a hand mixer or a bowl and wooden spoon! Thanks again, Hans!
Oh this is a a great old Southern staple. My grandmother made these and now mom makes them. We always called them cheese straws, though, because they were often made made in an oblong shape. Probably easy to put these through a cookie press and make them in pretty shapes. I've never actually made them because it's something mom still likes to make and bring to events. Cheers!
Hi Adam!! Happy New Year! I've seen these made with a cookie press in that rectangular shape. I'll bet your mom's are really delicious. Hope you didn't get too much snow down there! Thanks!
Your Kitchen Aid is gorgeous. That would be the color I would have picked out of all others! Mine is an off-white, which I like , but not as much as yours. Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Wow!, they look terrific. Hello Kevin and posse! I made your Ricotta Lemon Cake yesterday, Kevin. I'm now the neighborhood Rockstar! Thanks a zillion. Love from Arkansas.
Kevin, always so nice to see you and nice to see Lisa and Ralph - too bad we didn't get a chance to see your sister. The biscuits look awesome. Thanks for another great recipe. Happy 2025!
I was so excited to see this recipe! It’s almost identical to the one from the Mississippi Delta dining cookbook I have that belonged to my Mississippi grandmother. The recipe is the same, except in that book it ask for butter and does not include the rice crispy cereal. So glad to see everyone together in the video! Nice to hear Ralph’s kind voice! Sidenote, I made this recipe for all of my neighbors last Christmas, and a lot of of them were kind of puzzled because they’ve never seen cheese biscuits that weren’t fluffy. I also loved service merchandise as a teenager. Our store had a very advanced for the time kiosk station called Silent Sam that you could type in what you were buying, and it would magically show up at the back of the store and you would pay for it.
Hi John! Sounds like your grandmother made something very close to these. I think the word "biscuit" conjers up an idea of a traditional baking powder type biscuit, but maybe that's more of a northern thing. I love your Service Merchandise story. I wish ours had the Silent Sam! That must have seems like a high-tech system! Thanks!
Good morning everyone! How did we get so lucky to have such a great recipe and great friends to share with? Really enjoyed the video, hope you all have a great day! Cheers
I don't have a mixer. Will keep this recipe in mind if I find one that I love enough to bring home. I wonder if topping this with a homemade deviled ham spread would be tasty. I love finger foods when we go to the in-laws to watch football. ❤
This recipe sounds so good. We need our protein. There was a Service Merchandise on Wolf Road in Albany, NY. It was a great place to buy appliances. Around 1980 I bought a grill with a side burner for about $120. Eventually I gave it to our daughter's family who moved out west and it still is in use after about 45 years. Thank you to your gang there.
Life has been hectic and I haven’t commented for awhile! I’ve had these biscuits a few times at parties and they are delicious. I’ve always wanted the recipe. So thanks so much! My husband still says “that store where Service Merchandise used to be”! Thanks again Kevin.
Happy New Year! Always good to see the whole gang together! That biscuit mix does become very heavy & cumbersome to manipulate by hand. I've seen the new heavy-duty Kitchen Aid mixer on fellow TH-camr, Talli Faye's channel, that is very capable of managing this type of recipe. I'm w/ Maryann on the different options from which to choose. In fact, sliced jalapenos would be idea. Thank you, Hans, for sharing this recipe. Sounds delightful. God bless.
Hi Sallie! I'll have to check out Talli Faye's video on the new KA mixer. I love your idea of adding a little jalapeno, but I like things spicy. Hope you are doing well! Thanks!
LoL omg if looks could kill! Kevin was NOT happy with Ralph slowly moving the camera over to Maryann when she was talking. I don’t like being on camera either, Maryanne. 😉
These look great… the “Marion’s World” channel just did a great cheese biscuit recipe as well which is similar to this but it doesn’t include Rice Krispies…. I got my Kitchen Aid Food Processor at Service Merchandise here in NJ 😊
Hi Ladythyme! I'll have to check out the Marion's World recipe. The Rice Krispies give these a nice crunch. Service Merchandise had a great variety of small kitchen appliances and great prices! Thanks!
Kevin,is there one of your videos that explains what Cavalcade is? I’m really curious about the store? It’s an old dime store building? I noticed on your website that there are no tours. Thanks, Nosey John
Hi John - yes, there are a number of videos on my channel that talks about the tours and that it was a Ben Franklin dime store for 80 years. The Cavalcade is my personal collection and the studio where I produce my two You Tube channels and weekly local radio program. Thanks!
For decades I wanted a Kitchenaid mixer. For some reason I did a 180 and bot a Cuisinart. Sooo disappointed the attachments do not reach the bottom of the bowl, so it fails to mix small recipes!
Cheese Biscuits remind me of Red Lobsters delicious Cheese Biscuits, which I've seen copycat recipes for, calling for Old Bay Seasoning.....Kevin, the Cambridge Typewriter Company in Arlington Massachusetts is closing, officially closing this March, and no longer making repairs. The owner is retiring after 45 years in business. They received an autographed Olympia SM4 from actor Tom Hanks in April 2023. Happy New Year Everyone.
Thanks for letting me know about Cambridge Typewriter! They have certainly earned their retirement but I'm sad to see one of the few typewriter repair shops left in the US close down. Too bad a younger person wasn't interested in learning the trade and keeping the business going. Happy New Year!
Lol. I agree! Having developed some stomach problems over the past couple of years, I find I have an intolerance for any seed oils... soybean, canola, sunflower. The more I've read about this, the more I find I'm not the only one. Apparently research is showing that many seed oils are not that good for the body. We should stick to butter, olive oil, and coconut oil as the top three best oils for the human body. Imagine... what God himself made is the best thing for us! 😊
Hi Lauen - I'm guessing that when this recipe was developed margarine was a viable fat that would work. I've seen so many older recipes that call for it or vegetable shortening (Crisco, etc.) as the fat instead of butter. During WWII, margarine became a very popular alternative to butter, which was rationed and very expensive. Funny that now to find real margarine, which is difficult, it is almost the same price as butter. But when I make a recipe for the first time, I always respect the original process first and then make notes about what changes I want to make for the next time. I will say these came out beautifully. With some baking, sometimes there is an advantage to using a non-saturated fat instead of a saturated fat. Thanks!

The recipe, down to earth, practical, unpretentious and delicious, thanks Kevin for one of the best cooking channels on youtube.
Thanks so much, rriflemann! Glad you enjoy the channel!
Super recipe. Easy. Variations are endless. Oh. Happy New Year. To you all.
Thank you, Trent! Happy New Year!
Looks tasty- and just in time for Súper Bowl snacks. Thanks! 😀😋
Hi KbB! These would be great out on the snack table for Super Bowl! Thanks!

Hi Valli! So glad the Ricotta Lemon Cake was a big hit! Sending love back to you from a very cold Michigan!
Great to see the whole gang. Another winner of a recipe too.
Thanks, Jane!

Hot biscuits sound great since it's so cold out. I think my family would love this recipe. Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome, Mary!
Hi guys ! Those look like some great biscuits, we here in Australia call these type biscuits also, which are like a cookie.
Hi Ange! Thanks so much!

I made this recipe. Very good--addictive. Everyone liked them. So different.

Hi crystals! Happy New Year - great to "see" you here!
Those look great, I’m definitely making them soon.
Thanks, Kathleen!
Nice to see everyone. 😊
Thanks, 1corinthians!
Great show , as always 😊
Thanks so much, Charles!
You should have said the disclaimer "This episode of Cavalcade, was filmed in front of a live studio audience".
LOL! I should have said that at the beginning, PLK! Thanks!
Those look tasty and easy! I remember Service Merchandise stores - I frequented one in Traverse City.
Thanks, Kathleen! Seems like they had stores all over!
You and I had the same idea at the same time about the peanut butter on the cheesy biscuits! 😋
Squarebulb - yes! Glad you like that combination, too!

I have a Kitchenaid mixer that’s approximately 35 years old. It’s a white tilt head. Still works great.
Hi wolchfam - you've got a good one there! It should give you good service for years to come!

This looks yummy! I'd have to double that batch, though. Lol

Hi Lauren!!
We had Service Merchandise stores in California. All closed now. Pre costco times.
Hi ngrng - many stores have disappeared over the years like Service Merchandise. I didn't know they were in California. Thanks!

Service Merchandise was in New Hampshire in the 70s.
Hi AugustMeteors - didn't know their stores were that far east - thanks!

Why would ANYONE choose margarine ?
Lol. I agree!
Having developed some stomach problems over the past couple of years, I find I have an intolerance for any seed oils... soybean, canola, sunflower. How much Rice Krispies?
2 cups
Hi Carla - two cups. The recipe is below the video in the description.
