This would have not been my choice of channels to get info on truck campers. But this video hit it out of the park. I went across country in one of these when I was 8 years old. Good times.
I agree with most, in that this is a well done video. It's great too that you have a weigh scale that you can access easily to get these all important weights.
You'll soon be ready to take to the trails when you get some free time ( if ever!)

We had a camper just like that when I was little - popup style and everything. We hauled it with a '91 Silverado 1500 4x4 with overload springs. We also used a hitch extension and pulled an 18 foot ski boat behind that didn't have trailer brakes along with hauling the camper. Looking back on it, that was pretty sketchy for a half ton.

Okay boys, this is what's wanted in the truck video world! Popup truck camper reviews/usage/4wheeling/overlanding/traveling! I've had 2 Class Bs, 3 travel trailers (3rd one now), but have come to realize that yappari, a small lightweight truck camper is really The Ticket®. I already have F150 4x4 short bed, so popup camper is the best for what I want to do - go places I cannae with any other kind, except rooftop tent, etc. Have go baffroom to many times in night for rooftop tent. Break my fool neck climbing in/out. New Ranger, Jeep Gladiator, etc., are wanting bed popup campers!

I'm planning on doing some long range, overland type of travel when I retire and will be purchasing a 4x4 RV of some kind. I've narrowed it down to either a truck camper setup like this (although something a bit more modern than Andre's '91) or a class B camper van built on the extended 4x4 Mercedes Sprinter chassis, but each has pros and cons. A truck camper setup will be far better off road and A LOT cheaper to buy, but a van has a full wet bath, more room for solar/batteries, slightly bigger holding tanks, better fuel economy... I know there are other custom choices for more capable van builds, but I like the Sprinter. It feels much smaller/lighter on the road than it actually is, making it very nice to drive for long periods. Plus it really does have a decent 4x4 system, as seen tested on this very channel.

I put a similar slide in pop up truck camper in my 2000 Chevy 1500 two door four by four and hauled it great. In a 1/2 ton truck and the truck not being brand new I went haul more than two thousand pounds payload dry weight in the bed of the truck . Pulling a camper like this in a 3/4 ton is a piece of cake.
Good vid. I have a 03 2500hd silverado with a 6.0 and haul a lance 845 in it. The gassers are typically rated to haul more truck camper than the diesels.
When loaded with all my junk the truck weighs 10,500lb.
Interesting love vid, in Australia we take a swag (Luxury sleeping bag), ice chest and small bbq if we go camping. Flatbed truck are easier n gives more room n under tray roll out bbq or kitchen sink.

I'm curious what you think Andre I have a 2000 Silverado extra cab 8 foot bed with a 6.0 on the 4 L 80 e 4 wheel drive and I have a lance 810 2006 and the payload rating inside the glove box says 2000 pounds and the weight rating of the camper is slightly over that. I have been using this camper for over 4 years with no issues and of course I've replace the cooling system before I started hauling this camper. I think the weakest part is the cooling system at this weight range I want to know what you think and if you think I'm over my head. Surprisingly the 6.o has plenty of power up the Hills and I go up Long Valley and up to Clint's well which are the steepest grade around me. I use Amsoil synthetic in the engine and the transmission and the rear axle and transfer case.

Hi Andre' how does the 8ft camper behave on a 6.5'bed? I guess is fine as long as u respect payload.maybe COG is a bit off (?)but u cant race with a camper on anyway ,so I guess no problem about that either.I see may do the same
Another good thing to know is the center of gravity of the camper front-to-back. Especially when putting a 8' camper into a 6.5' bed. You don't want it to be behind the rear axle.

An 8 foot pop up should not be anywhere near that heavy I’ve owned an 8 foot hard side that was only 1200lbs. A 9.5 foot vanguard hard side with a bathroom and had all three water tanks was 2300.

For GM trucks, you also need to look in the pocket for a sticker that says the max payload for a slide in camper. It may (and probably will) be less that the payload sticker on the driver door. It may also say a slide in camper is not recommended for this vehicle.

One thing you didn't talk about type of tires to run I run 10 ply they can handle extra weight of a similar style camper I have for my GMC 4x4 Z71 off road GVW of 6400 .

Have you considered a roof top tent (RTT) instead of the heavier camper? Most RTT weigh less than 150 pounds and allows you space in the truck bed for gear, etc. Nice video nonetheless.

2001 Chevy Silverado 2500HD, crewcab.
Gas engine no 4×4.
Truck with me in it weighs 5,980 lbs.
8 foot camper similar to yours, with a bathroom weighs 1,620 lbs. with gear in it.
In my glove compartment is a sticker that says the weight of a camper can not exceed 2,720 lbs.
Truck, camper and me, with most gear, 7,600.
4×4 and diesel engine takes away a lot of your carrying capacity.
Your truck alone weighs 540 less then my truck with camper.
I also have the same tie down system as you.
They are an inexpensive cool set up. I have $7,400 total investment in my set up.

If you are riding by yourself, and don't have a lot of gear, you are fine. The rating in the glove box is not the total weight rating of the truck. if does leave room for passenger weight.
In part 2, Andre will also get axle weights, upgrade his tie down system and place a spacer between the camper and front of bed.
On Chevy Silverado you need to look in the glove box , there is another weight sticker in there that will tell you the max weight for a slide in truck camper. It will be less than the max load weight. My 2013 Silverado 2500 HD with gas 6L V8 is 2080lbs.

Mine says 2685 lbs. My camper weighs 1,600 with gear.

If I was you I would get a popup towable or a tear drop type be easy to tow with a S10 and they are usaully affordable and used ones are readily available . But that just my Opinion.

No, a truck isn’t rated as 1/2 ton 3/4 or 1 ton based on payload. My 3/4 ton payload is 3200lbs
Of course you shouldn’t leave the tailgate on, but Andre will cover that in part 2.

I have a 5,000 lb Lance 1062 on a Ram 3500. Total sits around 13,200. The 1062 is the size of a 22' travel trailer that sits in the bed of the truck. Best thing we've ever purchased.

Depends on the definition of moderate. Dirt roads yes, fields yes. Any wet conditions are the main downfall. I've left huge ruts in my own property just moving it after a really heavy rain. It's a good trade off to keep the wife happy though. Trees tend to be the biggest concern though. We sit right around 11'9" high.

you are going to get lots of comments on this video. it's almost like there are as many different configurations as there are truck owners. there are truck bed campers MUCH lighter than andre's. you can get some models around 700lbs. many people would be shocked that the 4cyl access cab taco, something most would never expect to carry a camper, has a payload over 1600lbs that can hold a great rig. of course, lots of people just buy camper shells and go crazy customizing the inside for stealth campers, or rig up those bed tents or rooftop tents that go over bed racks. once you get people talking about this topic, it snowballs.

That camper would be fine on a regular cab, long bed. It doesn't fit that Chevy at all.
Those brackets bolted to the rear bumper are not strong enough.
your no.s are wrong, check glove box reference on camper weight ,much lower than payload cap. 2105 Silverado hd is 1950 lbs. for truck camper.
You are right - the GM camper weight cap is a bit lower than maximum payload rating.

But in all seriousness it is "unsafe" and you can get tickets for it but I've been over weight every time I've towed my trailer and never had an issue
the truck squats more and will start to sway as the suspension is fully compressed. It become unsafe to drive fast.

If you don't have either yet, it's best to figure out what camper you want first. Then get the truck capable of carrying it, people, water, tools, clothing, gear and food. Every ounce , counts!

Everything in this video was pretty common sense stuff. Those tie-down points are not stock, and I wish you would have elaborated on the install of those.
Install is drilling 8 hole in the bed of the truck, 8 bolts and a socket to tighten down. Number, drill 2 holes, but attachment through hole, screw on nut, tighten.

Why are you guys burning so much time and money in converting FRANK into an over-lander. It will never be a good one. 1. Drink too much gas, not enough range, its not spacious enough, not reliable enough. You have had a super solid base for an over lander with your heavy duty all along. I would suggest instead investing all that money on a Hummer that will be disposed off, having all the mod's be fitted to your truck. You don't seem like you would like to get rid of it any time soon.
this is Andre's own truck. the Hummer belongs to Roman and theres not to many places left on earth where you need any kind of range

Hippie Bits I've driven around out west in my 91 XJ Cherokee that has a 350 mile range on a good day. Even out west you have to purposely avoid fuel stations to run out. The H2 with a couple of jerry cans will get you pretty much anywhere. Overlanding means different things to different people too.

5stardave True. USA has 4 million miles of roads. To me to overland is to travel far where roads or lack thereof demand 4wd capability due to it being remote.

RV's old as that are an eyesore, especially when you see them parked curbside in industrial areas of big cities. Please consider selling that and buying a new one - a new camper really isn't that expensive, especially a popup.

Old ones are great, you can take them off roading and abuse them without worry.

My camper is a 1997 Sunlite.
It is clean, and in good shape, and was about $20,000 less then a new one. I only paid $2,600 for mine.
