I was there and its so much better in person! I also went to the National Battle of the Bands yesterday in Houston Texas. Texas Southern University was there again and Southern University. 8 bands total. Love what you are doing on your channel!
Do all battle of the bands happen at the same time of year? How do you get a ticket and can anyone attend. I've been watching these for years online, but would love to attend. I'm not from the States though. It's been on my bucket list for years. I would buy flights and attend them all if I could.
@@sylviasworld9397 1 pick a city and state you wanna visit. Then find the hbcu. Go to the college's website for their football schedule. Then plan your trip from there. At any hbcu with any band. Pick the HOMECOMING games! And yes, the 'Battle of the Bands' is usually around the same time every year. Varies by school.
I'm so glad to see you are learning and enjoying the HBCU band culture. This has been around for years. These young people, band members, dancers and Flag members, start training and performing early with a goal of performing at a HBCU school. It's really something to see! 😃
When you are there in person, you will feel the beat of the drums and base horns (tubas) in your chest. The whole experience is electrifying and sometimes emotional.

I just want to say I love and adore you Carol and Recky. Thank you for highlighting HBCUs. Another college band you can check out is The Marching Storm from Prairie View A&M University.
I just came across you all. I was fascinated at watching you all react to the HBCU bands. As a proud HBCU Alumni from VSU( Virginia State University Trojan Explosion Class of 1972) I love the way each school is different .but they are all amazing. The bands at these schools are all a part of our culture . Please continue watching our bands❤
The latest National Battle of the Bands was uploaded by Killa Kev Productions. He released the stand battles for this year in one full vid. Glad you are enjoying the culture!
Hello... Thank you for taking interest and having a desire to dive further into the HBCU marching band culture. There are roughly 107 HBCU's in the US... Of those 107 about 25 of them you may find to be more popular and have more content available in TH-cam. Hope this helps you... Also take note, there are more colleges and universities in the US with marching band programs but there are only 107 are HBCU's... Thank you 🙂
This has nothing to do with the reaction, but I just wanted to say, Carol you look so bright eyed and happy today. Very pretty. And so he wont feel left out, yes Recky you look pretty, too.😄😄
Bands usually perform for the college football but performs for basketball games sometimes. A smaller portion of the big band ( a pep band) is what we call it performs at basketball games. Also do parades, battles, charity, etc.
MARDI GRAS IN NEW ORLEANS BAND COMPILATIONS Hey another great video - have you seen the compilations, yet... In New Orleans, every year is Mardi Gras and many bands perform and of course march (several miles start to finish) There are many videos but pick any that are 4 - 20 minutes. Cause these compilations can go on for a very long time... Many are incorporating all of the parades/bands from all over the city... Have fun and feel the spirit of New Orleans...
Pepsi is the sponsor of the Battle of the Bands competition. The competition was being held in the Houston Texans stadium. Smaller sections of the bands also perform at Basketball, volleyball, swim meets etc. They also perform at events around the school and the city( charity events, childrens hospitals parades etc).
I love seeing your reaction to the bands. When I was going to school, I never fathomed that people across the world would be enjoying this as much as we do. I wish you could see how the band leaves the stadium, especially during homecoming. Each section is highlighted and has their own breakdown putting on a "mini performance".. especially the drumline.
I love you guys' content!! Yes, I would love to see you guys react to each band before the battle and definitely would love to see you react to the battle.
The marching bands perform at every football game of the season. The bands travel to each event on buses. Each team has time to perform during halftime. They also perform at parades and basketball games.
This is a popular in the HBCU colleges. Do a review on a 5th quarter Battle of any 2 HBCU Colleges. I enjoy watching you both and your questions about it, your willingness to learn and your excitement. Maybe you will go see it in person! Really experience the culture and excitement of it all in person.. People live for the bands at HBCU's
Check out the Bethune Cookman University field show, i think y'all would especially enjoy the drum major introduction. This is from last weekend's Battle of the Bands in Houston.
Hey, you guys should watch the National Battle of the Bands for this year, 2024. It has all three bands that you guys already covered and more.. love your reaction videos
This is a contests where bands who qualify across the nation come and compete (Battle of the bands They have if for high schools, too.). You would be shocked at how big and good our HIGH SCHOOL bands are. My nephew band got fifth in the nation last year.
Carol, your hair is gorgeous, today! Hoping with all the wonderful things that have recently happened, your spirits have improved and you're feeling better!
The fact that they played Michael Jackson's song during the Pepsi part is interesting, too since Pepsi was a sponser for The Jackson's tour as well as Michael Jackson making commercials for Pepsi in the 80s. He and his brothers were also filming a Pepsi ad when his hair caught on fire. It was to an altered version of "Billie Jean" in which it changed the lyrics to "We're the Pepsi Generation" from "Billie Jean is not my lover".
The stadium is NRG Stadium in Houston where the NFL Houston Texans play. Texas Southern University is a small traditionally Black university in Houston that wouldn't have the stadium capacity for a national contest. So, the Battle of the Bands is being held in the large Texans stadium.
I don’t know if anyone explained this yet but this is not a regular football game halftime show. Each year, besides performing at those games, bands compete with each other locally, regionally, then nationally until they get to this competition, The Battle Of The Bands. I have enjoyed watching your reactions to marching bands (especially Ohio State!). I’m from Ohio and was in high school marching band…loved it!
The pep bands perform at basketball games. Full bands at football games. This is the NRG stadium where the Houston Texans play but TSU has used it in the past for the Labor Day Classic. They use the PNC Stadium now which is the home of the Houston Dynamo Soccer team.
Baseball fields don't have the structure for a halftime show and they don't have 'halftime' either. What happens is after the 7th inning the crowd sings Take Me Out To The Ballgame and maybe another song associated with that city. EVERY ONE SINGS, it's so much fun. It's called the seventh inning stretch, a time-honored baseball custom in which the fans ritualistically stand and stretch before their team comes to bat in the seventh inning. And occasionally singing is involved :D
The marching band is only fully on display in a football game on the football field, as a practical matter. But often smaller groups of the band might play in a basketball game or other sports. The students are often music majors looking to become music teachers or professional musicians, and they’re not just there to be in marching band, a big part of their musical work in college is giving formal orchestra concerts.
There are 4,634 colleges/universities in U.S. & about 1,795 have music programs in which you can earn a degree & all have some type of band or orchestra. I know of 250 colleges/universities that have marching bands that perform for football games. Of 4 universities I graduated from, only 2 had marching bands.
It was the Michael Jackson song Billie Jean & Michael famously did a Pepsi commercial many years ago & his hair caught on fire. But that's why they spelled out PEPSI i guess. Most high schools & colleges all have marching bands with the baton & school flag twirling & sometimes rifle twirling. I love when they have the bands that have designs like a running dinosaur or a variety of cool designs & funny too on the few times they mess up & shows bloopers 😂 great job guys🙏 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🪘🎷🎺🪈🏈
Primarily for football for full halftime shows. Smaller portions may appear at basketball, but without the marching. I didn't go there, but I grew up three blocks from where they practiced in the afternoon. I'd hear The Jacksons or Earth, Wind and Fire most every day during the week.
Yes, halftime shows on this scale are usually only performed at football games, mostly because that's the sport most popular and you need a large field. There are usually bands at basketball games, but they stay in the stands and play during breaks and halftime.
Before the Super Bowl became a Hollyweird production, I remember the Grambling Tigers band performing at the beginning of Super Bowl IX. Even in the 1970s, these bands were amazing.
Colleges have a few different bands. The bands at the football games are the marching bands. My son went to Penn State and he was in the Jazz Band. They played at the basketball games. A smaller band because of course the basketball game are inside. Not enough room for a marching band.
I enjoy watching this... To me this like one of our battle cry... The Hawaiian fa'aumu. You should see some of Our fraternities and sororities. They what is called stepping.. there us what called the divine nine... Just search and pick. You will enjoy... Another HBCU tradition.
I was in the band in high school. I played an instrument, but one day I asked one of the flag girls to let me try twirling their flag. Very hard to do because it is heavier on the flag end which causes it to be extremely unbalanced. Enjoying your reaction to the halftime shows which usually take place with marching bands during high school and college football games although halftime shows do occur at the national football level; especially the Super Bowl, but those performances are professional acts/major artists, groups and bands.
This is amazing! I love marching band performances! One of my favorites is the Ohio State Marching band. (th-cam.com/video/GTca2nrIn4U/w-d-xo.html). Amazing job to everyone performing! It takes a lot of hard work, lots of early (and freezing) mornings!
