@reckyNcarol what do you in Sweden consider, "Super Hot"? We live just north of Houston Texas, and we will often reach 110 degrees F and 100% humidity in the summer.
I was in our high school’s marching as well as in concert band. During football season we went to every game, home and away, and performed a new program at every game. I loved it! 😃
@6:41 YES, IT'S EVERY HALFTIME SHOW, WHETHER HOME OR AWAY. EVERY PERFORMANCE INCLUDING BATTLE OF THE BAND COMPETITIONS AS WELL, HAS A FORMATION DRILL AS YOU'RE SEEING HERE. IT TAKES 50+ HOURS A WEEK TO PREPARE FOR A LESS THAN 10MIN SHOW.
I love the questions. So, the band travels to EVERY football game, not just home games. The performances change every week, this is for the dancers as well. Performances also expand to pre-game pep rallies, pre-game shows, post game shows, special appearances (including performances for Presidents), battle of the bands, and for many schools, basketball season as well. To be honest, most people come to the games to see the bands, LOL. These kids put in countless hours practicing in addition to schoolwork and a little free time. Such hard work. The thing that drives us is a certain sense of pride in knowing we are giving you our very best in innovation, creativity, and show. And this applies to EVERY HBCU marching band; that's what makes them so great!!! Honestly, performing was the highlight of my undergraduate days.....the degree was great too!
Southern University Students are returning to the school for fall semester now. The band practice during the summer time and College football games will start in about 2 weeks.
This drill is called patterns in motion. The entire band is divided into squads of four with individual assignments. As a former band member, I can tell you it takes hours and hours of practice. You will see more and more because the HBCU marching season starts on August 31. Tune in to you tube every Sunday and all during the week after for the previous Saturday performances. Marching bands ae the pride of HBCUs. Keep viewing. You will be stunned when you see Southern University's main competitor, Jackson State University.
Now you need to watch Grambling University band as well. They are an all- black university. Each year the Grambling vs Southern University football game is a much watch. Not only because they both have great football teams, but because they really try to outdo each other's halftime show and we are the beneficiaries of their performances.
Southern University and most colleges perform halftime shows at each game during the season at home and away from home. They also do parades in the off season. By the way Southern University Human Jukebox band and The Fabulous Dancing Dolls is my fav HBCU! I love when you react to them!! ❤❤
Only thing better than a stadium filled with the sound is when they march in Mardi Gras parades and being between the buildings on St.Charles Ave. near Gallier Hall.
I like seeing them outside where you can see the way they move and their precision. A respect their commitment, because you know they practiced and practiced to do this. Thanks for sharing it. 🔥🤟🇺🇸🐊❤️
I didn’t march in college, but I did in high school. Doing this takes so much dedication, hard work, time, & energy, but it was also a lot of fun. We viewers, former band, & current band members love that you guys love this! 🙂♥️ Keep going down this rabbit hole. So much more to see! I suggest Grambling State or Florida A&M next!
As a former high school marching band trumpet player, I LOVE watching your reaction to these marching band videos. You asked, what is the appeal or motivation for doing this... I can only speak for myself, but my primary motivation was social. I was the ONLY girl trumpet player at my high school, and I loved playing with the boys. While I was enjoying the social aspects of it, I also learned to read and appreciate music, I got some good exercise, and I was able to travel all around the state as we played each week in the fall. I also enjoyed watching the football games free of charge each week---especially since my team was undefeated all 3 years I was in high school. Being in the band gave me a sense of belonging, and now, 50 years later, I STILL appreciate the community I experienced as a band member.
HBCU marching bands have long connected Black communities to their history, rooted in America's past of segregation at the university level. Today, while students can attend any school they qualify for, HBCUs continue to honor this legacy. These bands have generations of fans, traveling nationwide for football events, parades like the Rose Bowl and Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and even international tours. They represent a true sense of pride and joy among students pursuing degrees and professional careers, all while entertaining the masses.
Hey I been watching you guys for a week now and it's all smiles here....I'm from New Orleans Louisiana. I'm in my mid 30's and the "drive" we have is to be THE BEST! I use to play in high school and it's VERY COMPETITIVE even at a high school level. You should DEFINITELY COME FOR MARDI GRAS. You will have a blast. From the routines and playing at the same time during the field show it's all about counting in your head and remembering your givien role. That's how you get all kinds of clean patterns.
Recky & Carol since yall are loving the marching bands of our Southern Universities yall should check out the videos of their Drumlines because they're AMAZING
I retired from a HBCU, my daughter was a dancer for the band. Not all members are music majors. They spend hours and hours practicing to ensure they give a flawless performance. They travel with the football team to away games as well. They do this while keeping up with their studies. They don’t have much free time during football season. They are dedicated to! So proud of our HBCU bands.
There is NOTHING in this world like nailing the perfect show, and knowing you nailed it, and have a stadium of 80,000 or more people ROAR their pleasure and appreciation and approval for what you just gave them
Thank you for sharing and showing so much love for my hometown, Baton Rouge’s HBCU Southern University A&M Human Jukebox Band… I truly admire your appreciation for their talents…
Marching band members take so much pride and every band is striving to be the best band in the land. When you go to a hbcu football game , its not just a competition between the football teams but also between the 2 bands representing each school!
We love our culture and happy to see that you took the time to witness what we see all of the time! Proud of my culture and especially proud of Southern University.
Back in my day a former HBCU Marching Band member no halftime show was ever repeated and you had a week to get it together. Long practices after hours of regular class. Best time of my life!!!!
Hello I loved your reactions to Southern University(SU), we are in the same football conference witch is the South West Athletic Conference(SWAC). My name is Mario, and I attended the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff 1st Trombone 1999-2002. The best way to explain "MARCHING BAND" is its a way of life. The Drive in us comes from: The love of music, The love of your instrument, Performing to the best of your abilities on and off the field, The rivalries and you get to travel. Most of us started from middle school, on to high school then to college. Yes, you can get a scholarship but I'll break down what that comes with. Starts with band camp, a month before school starts so long days and nights. Condition training, Learning and memorizing the old and new music "The Book," drill or field show, and dance routines. At a game both bands perform normally 5 to 8 minutes, home and away games. If it's a classic game you get to perform a little longer with out penalizing your football team after half time. A lot of people go to the games just for the bands, and we make sure that we put on the bestest show to keeping it Funky and Groovy at all times.🎶🎵
As an alumni of Southern and proud former athlete, the SU band makes me extremely proud each and every year. THE MOST UNIQUE and DIFFERENTIATING PART OF THE SU MARCHING BAND IS THEIR ROUTINE OF MAKING THE HALFTIME SCORE. No other band does that!
Most of the fans especially in the HBCU go to watch the marching bands. Music is in their souls and in it they express their freedom and love in this universal language.
The bands travel with the football teams and play at home, and at away games in the other school's stadium. When bands play away from home, they're known as "the guests" or "visiting band" and will perform first during halftime, and then the home team will perform. If you ever dance a particular style like a line dance, (The Electric Slide) you have the steps memorized and know where and when to the music without thinking about it. Band is pretty much the same. When I was in high school, I was a section leader of the band, which meant I was in charge of keeping my fellow clarinet plays in check. It's somewhat similar to being a military Sargent, while those I'm in charge of are similar to privates. They had to do what I said when it came to the band, I could make them stand at attention, keep quiet, run laps, (if they were being disruptive) comment on and report anything improper about their uniform, and more. There were times when my fellow members didn't want to take me seriously because we were friends, but I was tough on them, and when they didn't like it and got angry, it didn't hurt my feelings. I was there to do well. One of my best friends was co-secrion leader, but was always afraid to speak up, didn't the others get upset with her, so she was always slacking off and allowing them to do the same. Our director told me to tell her, she was no longer a leader and to get back into her spot in line, and stay there. He asked if I had a problem with telling that to a friend, and I said I didn't, because she was getting on my nerves and I wanted our section and band to to well. I told her and she stayed angry at me for at least a week, as if I wasn't supposed to do as I was told. It didn't bother me. I was proud to be a leader, and taking it seriously worked for me. There was a section leader for each type of instrument, the flag color guard (twirlers of wooden rifles, flags, swords, etc.) majorettes; those who perform with or without twirling batons. The drum major was ranked higher than section leaders, so we answered to them, and the band directors/teacher who put everything togethers, were the highest ranked that we all answered to. Whenever at a game, the section leaders of the home band/team had to go and greet the leaders of the visiting team. We always dreaded going to our biggest rival, and they weren't happy to talk to us, either. That particular school had a lot of rowdy kids, their band wasn't good, it was much smaller than ours, and they couldn't stand the fact that our band was the most popular and won with high scores at competitions.
I love watching your pure 1st time reaction to the HBCU marching bands. I was part of a marching band and it's exciting. But there is lots of commitment by these young people because there is a love for what they do. Thank you for sharing and experiencing with us. HUGS!!!
Southern University is my Alma Mater and I’m so proud that you love the band so much! The band is world renowned (they travel internationally) and also known for marching the pattern of the half time score, no matter the numbers (when winning of course). I was hoping they would do that here but you can catch them doing it in other videos. I’ve never seen another band capable of this. Love you guys, and thanks for showing so much respect to our beloved black culture! Shout out to Dr. Isaac “Doc” Greggs, band director from 1969-2005 ❤, who allowed me to feature in the jazz band ensemble…yes, the Human Jukebox has a jazz ensemble too!
Marching band begins for many in U.S. high schools- they practice throughout summer in extreme heat for hours, and after school ,in addition to their studies. These young people take this on at university and just JOB OUT! Glad to watch them shine with you!✌️🤎
Hey guys, I enjoy watching your channel, especially your reactions to the HBCU rival bands, JSU (Sonic Boom of the South) and Southern University (Human Jukebox). Note: every time these bands do a field performance at home, it is completely new. They NEVER repeat a halftime show at home! Also, note that their shows are usually limited to 7mins-30secs when both schools' bands perform because American Football halftime is 15 minutes long.
Each year there is a "bowl" game featuring Southern University vs Grambling University. It is called the Bayou Classic. It occurs each year near the Thanksgiving holiday. It is a televised game and each school's band psrforms at halftime. It is amazing!!! Make sure you catch it in November.
SU Alumni 1985. At every halftime, the 2 schools compete for bragging rights. If you're ever in Louisiana, look me up. I will be happy to show you around the Baton Rouge and New Orleans Campuses. Thank you for featuring my HBCU.💙💛💙💛💙💛💙
Band members make a big commitment to practice early in the morning and late in the evening. They take it as a class if music majors, or as one of their electives. They also have their own Greek organization. Southern University Band has been doing this for a long long time. Look at some of the old footage. Enjoy.❤
Thanks for sharing my School and we do it to make the people that before us proud i marched in 1995 and we was the same it’s a beautiful thing and once again thanks for sharing ❤❤❤
I love that y'all are reacting to this since i had to put y'all on but if y'all really want to see a battle y'all need to check out southern band vs Jackson state's stand battle
Former member of the Human Jukebox here. There are many layers, but 1st thing you need is the “want to” when it comes to being there. There are a lot of important things that will help you maintain your position, and keep you going in your journey. But, you have to 100% want to be there, first and foremost, and want to contribute to whichever program you’re in.
Good video. Thank you. I haven't seen them perform in a while but Grambling State University used to be very good as well. Sometimes the whole band would be dancing.
My dearest friends Recky & Carrol,1st and foremost is to get an education 2nd leaving home with so many expectations. Among the most beautiful of it is the greatest friends & friendships that has been garnered. Looking back now at my age of 66, I would do it all over again with 4yrs & a summer at Mississippi Valley State University. Yes we do have battle of the bands halftime with home and away universities ❤️
You guys are so cute. Thank you for taking such an interest in the culture of HBCUs. Also, just so you know, the first song they played was the first few stanzas of "Lift Every Voice and Sing", which is the Black National Anthem.
I went to TSU -Tennessee State University and the band is a big thing here. Im 56 and we all still go back every year for home coming. we dont leave out during half time more come in during that time lol. the streets are taking over and its stuff to do for a full week.
Carol you said it best. You appreciate the SOUL of the marching band. You are definitely invited to the cookout. You would have a ball. Also you are correct. People come to the Football and Basketball games just to see the Bands before the games, at halftime and after the games. There is actually a sponsored event . The battle of the bands and everybody that appreciates music should go at least once. Most of the kids in HBCU bands were born because of this song th-cam.com/video/Imwx_vcrPw8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=obhdA_9d9MuYst2S While almost every band tries to play this song SCSU actually got the original writer and singer to perform with them BTW Disney World has also sponsored HBCU bands and they actually got a Drum Major to dress in a Mickey Mouse costume, so Mickey was playing with the band th-cam.com/video/PKzAYaVo1B0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=G-MpymZFgj-EN_Th
Coming from NYC, we didn’t have marching bands in high school (at least my school didn’t.) When I visited my niece in North Carolina and saw the parade led by their high school marching band along with all of the spectators, I was absolutely blown away. I was amazed & enthralled at the talent and beyond excited by the overwhelming energy. And this was just a high school band; I can only imagine the experience of a marching band from a HBCU❤❤. Maybe one day. Love your reactions. ❤❤
I love so much the discovery. I remember my first time seeing a band perform this way. Then going to High School (PBHS) WILLOWRIDGE HIGH Houston, Texas and our band was everywhere! Yes, even our high school bands are like this!!! My HS band was even in the Rose Bowl parade. Under the late great Ronald Thornton!
Marching bands are embedded in our culture!! Each and every band will blow your minds!! I was in competitive marching band in high school… you two need to check out DCI… stands for Drum Corps International… it’s incredible. Much love to you both ❤
So what drives us is we just have a love and passion for it. Many start playing in band in elementary school and continue on through middle, hs and then college. Marching band on the hs and college level is hard work, long hours and dedication. You miss out on alot in college especially as freshman during the fall semester when you march, twirl or dance. But we love it. We are called bandheads and we still love it long after we hang up our dance shoes, spats, batons or instruments. I'll be back with a link for another band that's very unique compared to other bands in the hbcu world NC A&T. Thanks for appreciating our culture ❤
My father composed music for band. So many public school programs have cut back on music and arts. Let's keep band and orchestra alive in our schools and communities!
My daughter was in Marching Band in high school(10th to 12th grade). These kids are dedicated. They had practice 3 times a week after school. During the summer, they practice the month of August, 5 days a week, 8 hour days. She loved it. They were very good, the team wasn't that great. Most people came to hear the band. They played during the game and had a half-time show. They even won at State competitions. Yes, there are marching band competitions
My son is in the Southern University Humanjuke box and I watch this live all the time, and they still amaze me! I love to watch the reactions of others who haven't experienced an HBCU band.
Y’all should do one for a 5th quarter! 😁 And do a halftime video to every HBCU school yall can find. Jackson State, Prairie View, Grambling State, Texas Southern, Arkansas Pine Bluff, Alabama State, Alabama A&M, FAMU, Miles College, Tennessee State, Norfolk State, Florida Memorial, Alcorn State, Bethune Cookman, North Carolina A&T, Morris Brown College, Virginia State, Winston-Salem, Edward Waters. Just to name a few.
I was in band and in marching band from 9th grade to college. Hard work, yes, but the familial bonds that are built during those times, are life changing. Watching vids like these make me wanna cry because It takes me back in the best ways.
Northern Europeans make me self-conscious about my level of english... as an American. So many of my friends from hs went to hbcus... my in- laws went to an hbcu... i love that yall find it powerful as well
HBCU bands play at every home football game and they travel with the football team to their away games. Scholarships are primarily given to outstanding musicians majoring in music, but other outstanding non music majors may be awarded a scholarships at the discretion of the band directors, but most of the band members participate because it is what they have lived and dreamed of every since they began to play in primary school.
Thank you for reviewing HBCU Bands. We have something called 0 & 5th Quarter were the bands battle each other musically. The fans are really involved we sing the songs the bands play it’s an AMAZING experience. You should come to the states and see the Battle of the Bands
Music is in our DNA. Music is what kept our ancestors thriving
Ever watch the foot movements of James Brown and the foot works of some African dancers. DNA don't lie

I love this a channel that get a understanding of HBCU marching bands and our culture
As a former member of SU Human Jukebox. The drive is to be apart of the best and continuing the legacy and tradition
💐
The Human Jukebox is definitely the best bar none. It seems like the Jukebox gets bigger every year that goes by.
Marching Bands are so underrated. It doesn’t get talked about enough imo
I was in our high school’s marching as well as in concert band. During football season we went to every game, home and away, and performed a new program at every game. I loved it! 😃
I wouldn't consider HBCU band culture underrated... it's a huge thing.
Marching bands in black areas are big depending on the state

You two need to hop on a plane and come to a HBCU football weekend!
Marching band begins for many in U.S. high schools- they practice throughout summer in extreme heat for hours, and after school ,in addition to their studies. These young people take this on at university and just JOB OUT! Glad to watch them shine with you!✌️🤎
5th or 6th grade in louisiana.. sometimes earlier than that
i am a Former Band parent and let me tell you it is very exciting and we are so proud to see our child out on the field
I love their reactions! ❤❤❤❤❤
America loves thier College ball and marching bands. You should watch Drumline Battles
Hi guy's just recently joined your channel enjoying your content 😊
Each year there is a "bowl" game featuring Southern University vs Grambling University. It is called the Bayou Classic. It occurs each year near the Thanksgiving holiday. It is a televised game and each school's band psrforms at halftime. It is amazing!!! Make sure you catch it in November.
Most enjoyable, but my favorite part of the video was the look on your faces as you watched it! Priceless!
I love you two so much and your genuine appreciation of these bands. You are very refreshing to watch.
One day I hope you guys get to come and be in person to participate and be in the action at one of the performances or games
I love love love that you can feel the soul!
Good video.
I was in school decades ago, but thank you for taking the time to discover our music and culture. We are a multifaceted people. ❤
Most of the kids in HBCU bands were born because of this song

While almost every band tries to play this song SCSU actually got the original writer and singer to perform with them
BTW
Disney World has also sponsored HBCU bands and they actually got a Drum Major to dress in a Mickey Mouse costume, so Mickey was playing with the band

I've watched a ton of HBCU marching in videos. I'm a sucker for the drum cadences, so I really like those particular types of videos.
Love SU. You got to see FAMU Marching 100. Dr. Foster set the tone for HBCU Marching technique.
FAMU NEXT!!!!!
You’ll love them!!!!
Especially the death march!!!!!!!
My father composed music for band. So many public school programs have cut back on music and arts. Let's keep band and orchestra alive in our schools and communities!
“Lift every voice and sing” is the song they began with.
I was impressed that they purposely chose an inexpensive uniform so everyone could take part.
No, this is Louisiana. It's way too hot to be in their full uniform. But they have them.
You should watch the Famu marching one hundred ( slow one ) Florida a&m university. Also 2009 & 2010 addition of Famu 100
🐍💪🏾
I love marching bands especially the drumline..
The app was quite impressive. I had never seen that clip before. As always You all are just too cute and that was a very good reaction
Were going to look up one day and Sweden will have a Marching Band like this because of inspiration. 😂
Man! I love you two!😂 And thank you for Watching these HBCU bands! I feel like they dont get enough credit for how fun its always been to watch them.!
Holy cow!! That was amazing! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽😃
Now that you have discovered this world you should check out HBCU bands from the 1980s and 90s. It was the golden era for the art.
My son is in the Southern University Humanjuke box and I watch this live all the time, and they still amaze me! I love to watch the reactions of others who haven't experienced an HBCU band.
This group marches in the New Orleans Mardi Gras parades with a 6 mile route at least 4 days/nights each of the two weeks parade happen.
I’m here for the lady’s eyes and reaction. I love it!❤
Much love for exploring and learning about a different style.
This 8 to 5 style marching with 4/4 timing music. That 8 steps every 5 yards in couple with 2 measures played with in that distance.
I’m A SU Alumni
I can’t wait to go to a game this fall. Thank You for show casing SU Band.
Halftime show is played at home and away games. Band members travel. We learn more than 1 show. Pratice was 8 hours a week when i did it.
I was in band and in marching band from 9th grade to college. Hard work, yes, but the familial bonds that are built during those times, are life changing. Watching vids like these make me wanna cry because It takes me back in the best ways.
You need to see a video of Southern University’s band doing the score of the game during their halftime performance.
Northern Europeans make me self-conscious about my level of english... as an American.
So many of my friends from hs went to hbcus... my in- laws went to an hbcu... i love that yall find it powerful as well
Carol you hit it right on the head. "SOUL" Thanks again
Not only is it every game.. it's a different show every game!
The drive is Pride, tradition , legacy and soul.
What is great to watch is the battle of the bands competitions.
Thank you for reviewing HBCU Bands. We have something called 0 & 5th Quarter were the bands battle each other musically. The fans are really involved we sing the songs the bands play it’s an AMAZING experience. You should come to the states and see the Battle of the Bands
