At that time, Thelma was still a senior in high school. If she went with Larry out to Los Angeles, she would have gone to either UCLA or else USC. But she would have had to wait until she graduated from high school first. That's why I don't think that Florida and James wouldn't allow her to go out to California in order for her to be with Larry. Suppose it didn't work out? Then Thelma would be crawling back home to Chicago. And even today, the cost of living anywhere in California is so high that it's not even funny.
