The loss of MLB and NFL broadcast rights to their network rivals did a huge number on CBS numbers at the time until NFL returned in '98. R.I.P. Greg Gumbel!

The other two after was when the bottom really fell out from underneath, not even the all-time viewing records set by the Nancy-Tonya saga at the Lillehammer Olympics could condition viewers long enough to stick around to much of regular CBS primetime offering.

CBS has suffered in their ratings without the NFL from 1994-1999 then when NFL returns they regain their top spot as the No.1 rated network
