I was about to say the same. It's so engaging to watch two friends just talking. No pretensions, no fake laughs. The conversation just flows like a real chat would.

I loved watching this segment. It was uneasily great watching Dave’s body language change once Howard brought up Jay’s name. Howard is skilled at making people uncomfortable. And watching Dave switch from being the professional interviewer to having an actual conversation with Howard was uniquely enjoyable. Thanks for posting this.

Exactly and Leno has been living 'rent free' in these clowns heads for years and I find it hysterical.

Leno on Letterman back in the 80’s was always great. They had a decent onscreen chemistry for banter.
One of the most instructive and inspiring moments anywhere ever is when Dave sits like Buddha while Howard rants about Leno. Howard eventually sits. Then D asks Howard if he’s ever made amends etc. Mind blowing.
The Jay Leno part was almost like a side note compared to the rest of the interview, which was much more fascinating. You rarely see such intimate conversations like this on TV.
Repeating your banjo punchline 10 times talking over the host is defined as intimate conversation to you?

I agree with Howard's outrage over Dave making up with Jay Leno. Leno has screwed over BOTH David Letterman and Conan O'Brien. Leno is trash.
@@SportsBossMan One of the things that angered me the most (aside from Jay giving Conan a handshake on camera 5 years early and promising him the seat), was Jay sheepishly acting like he innocently needed the job. He was like, NBC asked if I wanted my job back. Come on, man. Just stand up to the network and go to bat for your successor. But he's a selfish "nice guy".
I was lucky enough to be in the audience for this taping and it truly was great.

Howard Stern’s gift to media was the innovation of absolute complete open truth. Dave of course knows this, and respects Howard so much that he did the thing he least wants to do. He sat there with the guy responding to every damn turn with unvarnished truth from the heart with utter commitment. It was an incredible gesture, and riveting TV.

Stern is total fake. Denies that he did the most egregious blackface, including with racist prosthetics. Stern said in his book that the police didn’t beat Rodney King enough. WTF. Racist

This was incredible. Thank you to whoever requested. I normally hate talk shows because of the phoniness of them but, I enjoyed how raw and honest this was.
It’s a bit - everything Howard does is completely scripted. It’s the same act for the last 40 years. Go on talk show, talk over the interviewer and say how much he hates NBC because they got rid of him a million years ago.

That right there is what makes Dave great. I had the same reaction as you. They opened with that bit about the banjo, and he used it 10 minutes in the most PERFECT moment possible. Is that not impeccable timing or what?
It made me sad to hear Dave say “when he’s gone, that’s it”. RIP Don Rickles

I thought I watched Dave every single day of my life, going back to his morning show, but I never saw this segment.. One of the best ever.. Two legends.
That was unparalleled insanity, and the dance at the end. Dave is the perfect handler for Howard. Encore!
There will never ever be another talk show host of the same caliber as David Letterman. By the time Late Night with David Letterman began in 1982 Carson was already an old dude with a fairly humdrum show. Dave Letterman changed the genre for the better and hundreds of shows have been created in his wake. I began watching when it began in February 1982 and watched all the way to the end. God bless you David Letterman. You’re the true King of Late Night television.

This was really remarkable television - thanks so much for sharing this! It reminds me of that time that Dave showed up for Howard's birthday - they really do mesh very well!

This has to be the best talk show interview I've ever seen! Both men respectful and aware but even more so honest. I don't think I've ever seen Dave so honest and straightforward and really interested in what the guest thinks and didn't even sidetrack it by resorting to snideness or sabotage! Bravo!
perfect balance of true heart sharing and comedy - thank you both for your honesty.. that's what comedy is supposed to be all about, showing the silliness and touchingness of life at the same time.
Love the back and forth banter. From I love you to I hate you. Howard is a great guest because he's introspective and can admit to making mistakes in his career. How can you hate someone that is that honest and transparent? And Dave shines when he has a guest like that.

This was one of the best interactions between 2 modern hosts I think I have seen. This could have been recorded in Dave's living room. True entertainment.
I adore Howard Stern's honesty! It's so refreshing compared to majority of the talk show guest celebs!
Dave and Howard had such great rapport. They communicate so well and genuinely seem to "like" one another.
I actually think that Letterman had some of his best shows in his last 4 or 5 years. Despite his age he was getting back the energy and verve of his heyday in the 80's and early 90's.
We will never ever have a late night segment like this ever again.
David Letterman was the greatest talk show host who ever lived, and this conversation was one of his greatest.

Wrong..he is #4….The times Gary Shandling stood in for other hosts and the fact that The Larry Sanders talk show segment,was not scripted! Fact ,my sister is a first A.D. assistant director, told me…..makes him the greatest host of all time!…imagine if he took over The Tonight Show in 1992! Number #2 is Conan #3 Carson #4 is this legend! I know my list is extremely odd but I go with interviewing abilities, wittiness, comedic timing,quality of ther jokes and if they write their own monologues and finally, the level of comfortness he makes his guests …..it’s very important to their exchange in dialogue and for the viewer….that’s where Letterman always lacked…..funny yes…intelligent, very…..but creativeness,like Conan, he delivers short….not counting the 80’s old show…he was outstanding then…..I guess I’m still bitter about him cutting out Bill Hicks stand up…..not sure….but to say he was the greatest, over Johnny Feakn Carson is a bit much…….to each is own……. hell it’s better then Kimmel/Fallon/Colbert! Can’t watch those ! Their awful! Letterman was the last great one!

The Howard Stern appearances was like watching a chess game between two media masters.
Both of these titans tearing into each other over their connections to powerful executives. Bless em both, we won't see defiant hosts like this again.

if that "My Way' bit wasnt planned by the band, that was awesome improv over just one line from Stern.
I was scrolling through comments to see who said something about the band just all immediately breaking into My Way because Stern said the words. I love watching musicians with that kind of skill
But also to let the black trumpet player play the lead on it after Stern’s ignorant comment about him is magnificent. The level of talent of that band is ridiculous.

Howard said it guys if you picked up on it. The reason he's such a wacky guest who never shuts up is, that he watched Rickles do the same on TV when he was a kid, and vowed to be that way if he ever got famous. And that he did, and now was blown away that he was actually getting to know his idol in person.
No, Rickles knew Howard was a phony and gave him the treatment normies are given. That's how he weeded people out. Stern was always jealous of John Stamos' relationship with Rickles and he was probably set up.

So, don’t really know the actually motivation. But if you watch lot’s of Howard’s TV appearances, his delivery and pace is just about the same, including drawing the audience in for a bit of participation. Something he repeats for all appearances. Watch the Joan River’s Show appearances, the same. It’s his TV only delivery.
David Letterman knew what was going to happen when Howard Stern appeared on his show. Wild stuff was going to be discussed.
The second half of this interview, the part about friendship, is amazing. I feel like this is the first time that I've seen Dave truly open up. Here's the thing: I understand. I'm the same way. I have trouble making close friendships, because I feel I have to keep everyone at arm's length to protect myself. It's so ingrained that it may as well be instinct at this point. For many years, I've loved Dave. I thought it was because he is the type of comedian I most respect. He's truly rebellious, and he's got guts. But maybe this is the real reason. Maybe I just relate to him.
Every comedian performs because there is a hole he or she is looking to fill. I think it's important to remember that all good comedy comes from pain.
Stop being so scared all the time. Forget about protecting yourself and just live a little!

that's why I adore Norm's last appearance and his unexpectedly getting choked up at the end, dropping the battle armor finally to tell Dave he loved him. Because Norm is poetically tragic also yet another loner comedian who has many friends whom he's kept at arms length himself. It's funny, not haha, but ironic funny how all these comedic personalities found each other and have the same similar flawed pathology (still refer to Norm in present tense). I get it though. I have one friend who is just like me and Dave and Howard where after 15 minutes at a get together, we're already planning our exit strategy. So he and I pioneered the 15 minute get togethers. It saved our friendship with one another. And keeps us tethered to the world a little bit more longer even though we're inevitably slipping off the planet gradually regardless while dissolving like space particles just left to evaporate as nothing but scattered cosmic ash disappearing into the mists of time...
SO great. I remember watching this live. Love You, Dave & Howard!

I'm blown away at how sucked into this conversation I was...I want more! I think getting to see these two entertainment powerhouses, both w famously closed off personalities off camera have a very real conversation that for lack of a better expression went entirely off script for what either is known for - I never expected to love their passionate conversation that for once was not solely for the audience's sake but their own. Thank you for requesting and posting this. SO entertaining!
There was a hurricane heading for New York and people stayed inside but Dave & the crew, bless their hearts, put on shows without an audience in the theatre. It stands out in my mind because Dave was absolutely hilarious throughout and the crew was cracking up all the time. So a humble request from me if you could be so kind and upload some parts from then :)
Also, there was a bit when something goes wrong on the show and it cuts to Allan that curses out Dave for not coming to rehersal, and Dave checks with Paul and Paul curses him out too 😁 thanks for all the uploads. Letterman and the show was one of a kind

I would love to see Howard Stern and Graham Norton together. Such different styles and yet they’re the two best interviewers around and share the rare ability of being able to occupy either side of the interview.

I’m sure that Dave’s opinion of Brad Grey came from the tumultuous legal battle between Garry Shandling and Grey. Most people say that Grey ripped off Shandling to such a degree that it sent Garry into self imposed creative isolation. He was pretty much done with Hollywood after that. Sadly Shandling died much too young and Grey died not long after.
You should give more background on this because it's a dark story.
Garry Shandling was quite a bit ahead of his time.
Then he made the Larry Sanders Show which was superb on many levels.

I met Don Rickles at an art gallery opening in Beverly Hills back in the 80’s, he was so kind and attentive, he was the type of person who you felt very comfortable with, it was like I’ve known him for years. Great interview!

While I'm not sure if anyone who did not follow pop culture at the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries will get this segment, it is a classic. Unlikely buds, totally savvy to the mass media "weasels" who wrote the big checks for them. Thank you LETTERMAN for keeping us howling!

I remember listening to Dave on Stern calling in during his heart surgery recovery. Quite the commentary on Leno, and who could guest host.
What an interview/appearance! Great exchange from 2 of the absolute best. Great stuff - not sure I EVER saw this.
Many great moments were guests who were on equal footing with Dave, and Howard was always that. In fact, early Leno appearances were the same. Absolute, pure entertainment. ❤
Commenting while I'm watching. This is a GREAT interview. These men at the top of their careers reflecting on them as, what after, this interview became their decline. Really insightful for all of us watching to learn and live from.
