Lived there in 1962'/'63 at 7 years old, had a crush on the sweetest girl named Rita and would be terrified when her mom would send me home, knowing I had to walk home in the dark. Her mom's gentle "What are you, a man or a mouse?" didn't help one bit! We were there for JFK's visit in June of '63 and got to see him, along with Hanau streets lined with German citizens who cheered him to no end. WONDERFUL memories even at that age, of school and football games, tons of snow and soldiers who became my admired role models all through life. Thank you so much for this video.

I was at Fligerhorst from 78 to 80. Best time of my life. C503rd aviation. What great memories, and sadness at the same time. Im old now, my best friend from 2/75 artillery passed away a few months ago. Its been a dream of mine to visit Germany again. We had Heuys and Cobras..

Lived on Fliegerhorst as a kid. Buildings 1415 and 1418. Incredibly wonderful memories. Loved the woods behind housing full of WWII bomb craters (and we were well aware to not go in the craters). Went to a German school in Erlensee before they built the Soortsfield school. Really sad to see that the family housing is all gone. Taking my kids there this summer and wondering if I can remember anything.

I visited in July 2020 and you walked past my building. I went into my building and went upstairs to my room and my mind went back. I was also in that hanger but my hanger was demolished.
I was stationed on Fliegerdump from 80-83 173rd Aviation Attack helicopter company 5th Corp. Was UH-1H Huey helicopter crewchief. I recently found my Ole girl (72-21634) in Hampton, Georgia. Sad to see her in her condition but I got to spend time with her again. This is 40 years since I saw her last. Quite emotional 😢.

My ex wife still works in one of those buildings. BOS GMBH, I think they're still there. The are the people responsible for moving soldiers housing. The fact of the matter is the Germans required the U.S. to upgrade, and improve the WWII barracks before we returned them from our leases. And when we were late making the improvements we got fined crazy amounts per day, per incomplete projects. Uncle Sam made those places like brand new. Once we turned them back over, they let them go to shit. They had all sorts of plans, but mostly failed.

I was in your building, second floor above your room 84-89 building #1369. 122nd. The community center wasn't there. It was a big parking lot with tennis courts in the middle. It was the best duty station. Very busy with the height of the Cold War going on. Constant helicopters, tanks, trucks, marching. You had to go off post on a Sunday to get peace and quiet. I loved it there and made so many great friends.

Our father was stationed at Pioneer Kaserne but way back in the 1960s. I still remember all the fixtures and architecture of the housing. Loved the doorknobs and window openers, handrails and stairwells. It was much newer then. When you were walking downtown first shot, all I could think it how much older and run down the city looked. Kept expecting it to look like it did 60 yrs ago. I learned how to roller skate on steel wheels, adjustable skates on the cobblestone in Hanau and Fulda. Still have my skate key. Thank you for your time and effort to make this video!

Awesome video. I was there also, from April 2000 to June 2005, but have never been back. Looks totally different. I was a crew chief on the AH-64A, in the 1/501st Alpha Company Assassins. Spent many nights at the International, as it was right across the street and way too convenient for somebody in their young 20’s to have fun. Was in Iraq from April 2003 to June 2004. I spent my last year there at brigade, when the rest of 1/501st went to Fort Hood to get trained on the AH-64D and I knew I wasn’t going to re-enlist. I had an office on the second floor of the building on the right as soon as you entered the main gate, where I set up the cones for the running routes in the morning and took care of the registrations and maintenance of the gardenplatzes on the perimeter of the base. Thanks for sharing, have very fond memories of this place.

Cool video, thanks! Fliegerhorst was also my first duty station, I arrived in December 1980, extended and stayed till July 84. I was back to Hanau in the summer of 2019 and did catch a bus out to visit Erlansee and Fliegerhorst. Hanau and the area is nothing like it was in the 80's, I'm really happy to have been there back in the day. My unit was 205th AVIUM. Cobra, OH58 and Huey birds.
You mentioned Illesheim, my second tour started in Illesheim with 10th AHB. We combinded out helicopters with the tanks of 1/1 CAV 1AD and moved to Ansbach. This was all between 86-89. That tour was not so fun. I did not get back to Ansback when I went to Germany in 2019.

Wow! What a great video. I was stationed there 1985-1988 with 503rd CAB (31V Commo) and a few years later they changed from Huey's and Cobra's over to Blackhawks and Apache's and became 2/227 Combat Aviation Battalion or maybe Brigade. I remember being assigned to a special detail for 2 months for those of us who had NATO TS clearances where another soldier and I would work in the basement of the HQ's building (or the top of the pyramid in Fliegerhorst Kaserne) and an EAM (Emergency Action Message) rang over the TA-312 and we had to individually decipher the message. Strangely it said to deploy nukes. I was scratching my head thinking "I didn't know we had nukes here." I had the other soldier decipher it and he came up with the same message. About the time we started dialing the post commanders phone number, the TA-312 rang louder than it had ever before. It was for a new message informing us not to act on the last message and that it was supposed to mention "For Training Only." That was crazy! Lots of good memories for a lot of us. I noticed when you walked around the left and or the right side of the pyramid the old fenced off areas that led downstairs to the underground airport was no longer there. Back in 1985, we were told they were flooded to keep everyone out and that they were also boobytrapped. Prior to 1985, quite a few people attempted to dive down there to find German treasures and the last one who returned died right after surfacing saying it was boobytrapped. Interesting story. Thanks for posting this video.

Thank you so much for this video! You did an incredible job narrating and loved that you walked and talked! My husband had a battalion on Fliegerhorst 1989- 1991. 3/20 FA. He took his whole battalion to Desert Storm and the battalion was deactivated after their return from the desert. Amazed at how the city of Hanau has modernized so much! We watched another video of Old and New Argonne and saw our quarters in the duplexes! We returned in about 2005 and couldn’t even get on Fliegerhorst and saw nothing but tumbleweeds. It was very sad. We so enjoyed your video of the improvements and you pointing out what we could not get in to see. Thanks, again!!❤❤❤

I lived on Fliegerhorst base from 1970-1972 (army brat) when it was still a functioning airfield. We lived in one of the duplex bungaloes bordering german land back by the baseball field. It's barely recognizable now... I think I went to school on Pioneer Kaserne for 6th and 7th grades. Thanks for the video! I think the aircraft back then were mostly Hueys, Cobras, and Mohawks.

Wow brings back old memories. Funny you mentioned Fliegeldump as your first duty station, Budingen was my first. I was a 15J with F Trp, 1/1 Cav at Budingen from 2004-05. Used to make trips to Fliegerhorst to pick up parts for the helicopter we worked on. The dry cleaner/insurance place you talked about at the front gate also had a used car lot if I remember right was part of the same business. Us aircav guys deactivated in May of 2005, 15J/S’s got sent back state side wile the rest went to fliegeldump and boy were they mad. The tankers and scouts stayed for a few months more while the rest of the base shutdown. I know the town was sad to see use leave since their economy took a major hit afterwards. I go on google maps every once and a while to look things over, for most parts everything is still there. Airfield has been leveled, but you can still see the outline of the runway.
