Great video Will. The 40p overweight penalty is very severe. We get paid up to the full weight and do not get paid for any carcass over that weight. See you at the finish line 😄
It’s a weird one. I can sell liveweight but it’s an hours drive and often get better price on the dead. But the two abattoirs we use pay a little different

For someone living in a suburban home north of Atlanta, Georgia USA, I have really enjoyed watching and learning from agriculture TH-cam folks since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, starting with the 3 Bale Off Challenge!!! Glad to see you getting decent prices for your lambs!
Great ,clean lambs Will.well handled and picked out ,so many Shepherds just going by weight and not taking into consideration condition levels .Always good to select lambs according to hoof or hook selling. Good stuff ,great set up ,it pays to feed as grass looses it's power and great team work.

Will, good for you getting a good return on your lambs. Out of curiousity, are there any specific improvements raising these labs you could do with minimal improvement for higher gain? Or, are you pretty much at that point where further gains could be more trouble than they are worth? Thank you.
Have they changed the grading letters? EUROP being the one I was familiar with. R was the grade most of my Lleyns achieved with the Texel x getting Es and Us.
@@CowleyHillFarmthe abattoirs put pressure on the MLC grader, I know this as a former grader told me this in spite of them meant to be independent. Your lambs definitely look far better than a next to bottom O grade. I went back to the livestock market in order to help keep them open. When the trusted grader retired, the new one downgraded my lambs so I took them home. He was buying up the ‘poorly’ graded lambs by his ‘standard’ himself and making a killing on our hard work. Interestingly he didn’ t downgrade mine after that. I am afraid there are too many rogues in the trade but at least there is more competition in the mart, that is, unless they agree prices among themselves. One week I sent lambs when the prices were flying. It turned out that a new buyer had come and the rest outbid him just to make sure he didn’t come back.

If you have time and are able to separate the data, would you be able to compare the av weight gains of the Aberblacks over the Lleyns? Guessing that deadweight it’s impossible to compare confirmation/possible premium for confirmation that you might have got through the ring? And an end of year review? It would be an interesting video. They looked as though they did really well and looked good from the videos.

factory decides the grades. farmer has no choice only accept.
What do the grade numbers mean? How do they decide?

I think it’s just genetic improvement year after year. As well as grazing management

How much are you feeding the lambs per head?
Roughly 5-600g per day
