Steve Mellott - Turning an End Grain Box 09-11-2014
Steve demonstrates the process he uses to turn an end grain box. He discusses various design considerations and a technique you can use to get a good fit between the top and the bottom. He also discusses the proper use of various tools to limit the amount of sanding needed and various embellishments you can make to enhance the final product.

Thank you so very much for teaching how to do this I am a new turner. I started in June of 2017. and I have made a box for my husband. He said that it looked good too. Just wanted to say thank you for showing how to turn this kind of box

As a "new" turner myself, I have watched 100's of turning videos. I'd never want to knock anyone posting a turning video because of my gratitude to them for taking the time. From personal experience I'd say that anyone interested in turning will not do better than watching as much Stuart Batty as possible. vimeo.com/woodturning

Rules were made to be broken. I've always had trouble following that 1/3 to 2/3 rule with pens, vases, boxes or anything else. It just doesn't work with most of my designs. It's refreshing to hear others say so too. Great demonstration, thanks!

Despite the camera work, I think Steve did an excellent attempt at the box. I am sure in his own shop without the audience he works at a different pace. Why can't the overhead camera suffice. Shifting back and forth isn't necessary as previously mentioned. Nice demo Steve.

Thought this was a really good demonstration; it gave me important information for a future box.

My mom is almost 80 and i turned her an 8 inch box out of mulberry. There are hundreds of mulberries behind my house and several are on the ground. So I'm finding lots of things to make out of them. When i gave her the bx she burst into tears. She said she had one like it when she was a kid that her dad had made.

I don't mean to be critical, but the camera work is awful. You're out of focus a lot, and sometimes you're not pointing at the work! Otherwise, this is an instructive video, despite the poor camera work.

Should not have to use a jam chuck at all ,let alone 2 ?. A recess for the base and a tenon for the lid.Simple !!

    The cameraman is drunken?

    • @dandouthart633
      @dandouthart633 10 ปีที่แล้ว

That was me. The main camera is mounted on a tripod with wheels. The wheels do not roll very well when the floor is covered with wood turning chips. I did not edit the video, but the view should have switched to one of the other cameras when the main camera is being moved. Sorry about that. I hope that you did not get too dizzy.

I thought that the comment was funny. I just thought that an explanation was in order. I find it very annoying when the video is jumping all over the place. When I edit the videos, I get rid of that jumping around.

Dan Douthart For me, there was a too much zooming in and out which sometimes cuts off what I'm trying to see. But thanks for making these videos available, I learn a lot from them.

    Bonjour,
Le tourneur est à la hauteur sans aucun doute mais comment est-ce possible de livrer une vidéo d’aussi mauvaise qualité.
    C’est très désagréable à regarder.

Just because you have a jacket that says you're a wood turner it doesn't make it so!............yes, you'll end up with a box (if you still have your fingers left ! ).........but what you did was more "scraping" than turning and you demonstrated some fairly dangerous practices........perhaps you should alter your jacket !!!

Could you please post a link to your channel so we could see how it should be done? It's clear from your comment above that you're of a different level to this guy who holds himself out as an intermediate turner.
