These were all recorded extremely well. Listening to the clips I was able to hear exactly what I was looking for when it comes to characteristics of these amps that make each of them uniquely special. Great production work. ...Personal preference, would love to see a 6505+ here as well, I live and die by that head. Something was always missing from the 6505MH to my ears.
I like the Mesa Dual Rectifier best for this riff. Has great bottom end and distortion. Usually I’d go with the EVH. But when in a mix, they all sound great and the MT15 can keep up especially for the price. Kudos to MT for putting out a solid product at an amazing price. 👍
In the mix I thought they sounded really similar. Isolated there was more of a difference. Would have liked to hear them through a real cab / Mic set up personally. But that's my preference. Well made video though. Liked that it was the same riffs through each amp - so fair test. It's amazing how many channels just have someone noodling different shit through each amp.
I've lost myself in your amp shootouts John and one thing is for sure: we guitarists live in blessed times. None of these amps would be a wrong choice as long as you dial them in correctly. The choice is then more about how fast and easily you can dial in a tone that YOU like from each of these IMO. Thanks! 🤘🤘
Yes, it is a glorious time for guitarist and musicians in terms of amazing gear. Right now I am put together my rig in it’s Final Form, 😆. It’s would be unheard of for a Jo Shmo like myself to be playing such a rig just 20 years ago. Today, kick ass gear is available to the average person. Everything else sucks about our current modern era, but the gear is cool
Laney already owns the competition with their ironheart studio. Those who own it already know how much of a gazillion of features they have packed in that small all tube amp head
I’ve said it for years... Tone comes from your Hands! They all sounded amazing, yet amazingly the same. Isolated, you can hear slight variations.... but in the Mix, not so much. Great video!
Loved the Mark V 35 it has great detail and clarity, more darker sounding, the Dual Rectifier has more bottom and can sound mushy on the low end. The IronHeart sounded tight and a bit accentuated in the highs. But those seem to be my favorites. Great video, thanks!
I played the MT-15 about a week ago in my local music store. I was instantly blown away with the tight focused gain section in the amp. The volume was massive as I had to carefully lower it in respected of all surrounding. I was playing through an ESP ec1000 Gary Holt signature guitar (loaded with an emg 81 in the bridge) and the gain was just above 1 o'clock. Wow as I continued to dial it in. The clean section was equally as wonderful. This amp is beautifully voiced and extremely punchy. I dont know how it can only be a 15 watt amp. This is a must try for all seeking the mini head option.
I owned a Mesa Boogie Dual Rec Roadster, A Laney VC50, A Hughes and Kettner Switchblade. I recorded all my parts on A Fair Dream Gone Mad with the Roadster head. I now own an Mt15 and the tones I am getting smash all those amps at a pretty manageable volume. Love it for recording. Live I don't know yet, haven't taken it out of the studio.
I got it with D Activator pickups and a East River od. Damn, son. Never had the gain over 4 but those pickups are a bit hot for having a clean channel that wont break up unless you f with your volume level, od off etc
Mesa dual rectifier (2nd) one was the best. Warm, tight, punchy. Also, last one Laney was very good. Very pleasant high distortion and crushing. PRS (1st) sounded similar to Laney but I like Laney because of its high end punch (sounds more balance to me).
I came here looking for this comment...both clean and gain - Laney hands down! Runner ups: For distortion: 6505/5150, MT15, Mesa dual in mix/Mark V solo Clean: Engl (yes, crazy), Mark V But no MIDI, so H&K it is likely xD
One thing that PRS does with their amps that I've not seen in others is using bigger tubes on lower powered amps. Usually 15 watt amp will use 6V6's, but PRS uses 6L6s. They do this on the archon 25 watt 1x12 combo as well. Theres something about it that just makes it sound huge for a tiny amp. It's definitely interesting.
I bought the mt15 i couple of weeks ago and for anyone who’s going to try it out. Do not just put it at 12 o’clock and expect it to sound amazing. The presence control is immense and the eq is really solid. And it response really well with pedals like using a mid boost to get thicker lead tones is working great . And It is really loud as well. Only big downside is that it hums quite a bit All and all 8/10 for a small amp. Definitely recommend.
I have a PRS MT15, and I have to say I love it. It's loud as hell, and pairs nicely with my Strandberg. I got it over a number of other amps for its clarity, string definition, price (~$750!), and how freakishly loud it is for its wattage rating. Otherwise, I might have for an ENGL. Those 6L6s really do it for me.
Vince P whole heartedly agree. For its size and price, it’s a beast. It cleans up real nice and you can cover a lot of ground with the settings available.
You really can't go wrong with any of the amps in this video. I got the mt15 which fit my budget really well. It should be here today and I'm really excited to play it.
I agree 100% with your comment. That is why I love the head seperate from the speaker cabinet. There are many great legends that still love the combos.

The MT15 and 6505MH sound so incredibly similar it's hard to find any perceivable difference at all. Rectifier sounded a little more present than the rest but my favorite of the group is easily the EL34 5150 III. The EVH 5150s just have a special "IT" factor for me when it comes to high gain tones. I played the peaveys for a lot of years but the moment I got to play the new EVH 5150s when they first released like a decade ago, I was sold on them. They had the aggressiveness of the peaveys with this extra harmonic richness and "chewy" characteristic that the peaveys lacked, the peaveys were more cold & sterile sounding comparatively. They still sound great of course but the EVH amps quickly became my favorite high gain amps. The Stealth 100w head in particular is my all-time favorite amp.
Nice demo! Great tones. I liked the Dual Rec first, Fireball, PRS, and Orange. The rest fell beneath those but not in a bad way. Outside of the Mesa’s and ENGL, the others are 5150 flavored clones that all nail good tone. MT15 kinda borrows from several and definitely sounds pretty good.

Great observations!! The MT15 is great but the Iroheart currently is very affordable here in Europe. It has nice features as well so definitely a great option!
The 6L6 amps all sounded the best (IMO). With the EVH very close. The MT15 is a helluva value in the lunchbox segment - sounded every bit as good as the other 6L6 amps (again, IMO)
So under 1000 bucks budget, I'm really torn between Laney and PRS. My personal fav here are Mesa Dual Rec and 5150, but Laney and PRS are so close to both big boy sounds, from my perspective, it's really not worth 2-3 times the money ... In the end I think I would go with Laney and for the rest of the money buy some nice boost pedal and tighten shit even more :)
Yeah, same here. The Dual Rec and EVH 5150 where the best. I think my absolute favourite was the EVH 5150. But the PRS and Laney where damn good for their price
You can really enhance the sounds of the heads with an EQ pedal in the effects loop and a boost pedal on your way through the front door. It's like amp testosterone.
I have an ironheart 60w and its a great amp. You can also play it in low wattage and it sounds really good. Its a very versatile amp, great cleans, and of course savage gain. You also have a pre boost, so you dont need an overdrive in front of it.:)
Wow regarding to the driven sound imho the MT15 is second only to the Mesa Dual Rectifier. About the clean it also has a very nice sound considering also as a plus the dedicated EQ and in general pretty in line with the most expensive one's MT15 and Mesa Dual Rectifier sound very similar but the Mesa sounds more clear and precise without too much bottom end. Maybe the 6505 its the only one givin a bit of grit in the clean as well that might or might not be wanted but for sure nice sounding. Would be interesting to hear the difference with a DSL20HR as more or less are the same built quality even tho the MT15 is more expencive. Cheers great review man!
You are awesome dude! The tones you dial in are always so good that all the amps sound great. I think your talent is getting the most out of an amp as opposed to exposing its weakness. I believe, instead of showcasing an amp at its best you should break every aspect of each amp down.
Great comparison! I liked them all. To my ears the Peaveys sounded a bit on the thin side, but still good. I came here for the MT15. It held its own among some heavy hitters. The Mesa’s sound great, but they cost a lot more. Excellent video, you just got a new subscriber.
Every amp is good in this video! And almost sound same at the same time...because of same Mesa 1x12 box and same microphone! IR is most important part of sound...not amplifier anymore !
I listened to this over and over. For the distortion tests: MDR sounds best in the mix to me, the Laney sounds best in terms of getting the rawness out of the tone to come alive.
You have made these all sound very close. Second amp, the mesa i believe was best metal tone, really impressed with Jim root clean tone also, love the bite to it. All great amps. I must admit I had ruled out getting the mt15 but might change my mind. I'm looking for a small tube amp like that to do silent recording but have been distracted with the revv d20 reviews, now coming back to the real amps again.
Nice riffs, glad you picked out the Zilla IR :-) i got a Zilla 2x12 v30/k100 myself which is awesome. Test confirms for me that the cab plays a hugh part in the overall sound, in a mix you’d hard pressed to tell the difference between most of the amps. Lunchbox amps miss some bottom end is my conclusion. Liked the Engl a lot. Small tip: You could up the production value of your own voice.
I was really surprised that I wasn't more impressed by the mark five. I think that the mids were cut a little bit lower than they should have been but that's just a personal preference thing. I think this is a great comparison of a lot of great amps. I'm so jealous of your collection! I own a Mesa Rectoverb 25 head and cab. With the smaller amps, I was very impressed with both the mt15 as well as the Orange Terror given their lower wattage.
You seem like a great guy and your playing is great too ! Through the mix of all the computer programs and TH-cam the difference is very hard to distinguish unfortunately except for some slight nuance’s ! Great effort nonetheless! Cheers brother !
First off, great playing demo. In a band situation...they all sounded very similar. Hard to differentiate anything meaningful to my ear. I seem to have liked the Jim root Orange amp best. The MT15 definitely holds it's own. Against all of these amps.
They all sounded gr8, although it was very hard for me to tell differences between them as it would have been better to hear the distorted riffs after eachother and the clean tones altogether, since by the time I heard the next distorted amp I had already forgotten what the previous one sounded like. Anyway, to me they sounded fairly alike, except the Jim Root, which to me had a more crunchy mid-range vibe to it than the others, which I liked. Nice video! Btw, I think I saw you in a video before when I was researching that Deftones Signature ESP guitar, which is totally sick!!! Subbed.
Look at this... This kind person here is just proving it: no matter what amp you use, they all sound similar. Why? Because they use the same exact IR. As for the difference between the amps, I have no clue-1%? 2%? I can't tell. But of course, you can tell, because you people are wizards. Do the differences even matter to the audience? For 99% of them, it doesn't matter, unless your audience is also composed of wizards. The differences can only be used as an argument in the realm of guitar witchcraft and wizardry, because these wizards will always argue about almost everything. Thank you for the video, Sir!
I used to own a Revision C Dual Rec. Pre 125 serial number, so one of the first ever made. Great amp. A little darker and punchier than the newer ones. Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed every single one of these amps. Quite a noticable difference between most of them tho. Would be hard to choose a fav, as it would really depend on the mix you’re going for. If I wanted to make a modern metal track atm I’d go Dual Rec and Laney. They fill quite different parts of the spectrum so I imagine they’d sound massive together. The Orange fits the Mastodon vibe so well tho. Almost a bit fuzzy. I kinda love it, but it’s for a very specific style.
@@Garrett-In-Canada Thinking about getting one. Never had a real tube amp and cab because they're super loud and I don't want to disturb th neighbors. So kinda stuck with Boss Katana for now.
Suprisingly enough, my favorite was the Fireball on drive tones ! With the Ironheart as a close second. Something was a lot different with the Mark V, like it lacked a significant amount of presence, but maybe that's how it's voiced. Absolutely stellar comparison, and composition, as usual
Thank you! The Mark is the hardest to dial in for some reason. If you make it brighter it can become strident pretty quickly. There are many options to tweak so it is very flexible, it just takes a little more time to get the 'perfect tone'.
@@SonicDriveStudio Yeah that's what I thought. Still sounded great ! Is the music you write available on streaming platforms by any chance, or only your TH-cam uploads ?
Peavey 6505 variants just have damn good OD. It's chunky and pronounced. Great for heavy chugs. But the EVH always sounds a bit fuller and more saturated. The two are very similar (obviously designed from the same roots) but both are the better amps here. I'd say the MT15 could hang but it didn't have the same balls. The Mesa is always a favorite but to me it's a bit over saturated.

This is me, I'd love a 5150 but went with an Ironheart 60W due to the price - they're criminally underrated
Richie P bought Laney Ironheart 60 shortly after this video :) Enjoying this amp very much so far.
They all sounds like John. Like!
You get what you pay for. No surprises here. Very good comparison John, Thank You !
The similarity between the PRS and Mark V floored me!
Bad ass playing dude!
This is how a demo/comparison is done!!
The Dual Rectifier sounds amazing. But at a third of the price I'm satisfied with buying the MT15 that doesn't sound much off.

If I close my eyes listening on my phone speaker.they all sound pretty much the same. You dialed them in spot on
You are awesome dude!
I came here for the
MT15. It held its own among some heavy hitters. The Mesa’s sound great, but they cost a lot more. Excellent video, you just got a new subscriber.
Yep mesa hands down!!!
Every amp is good in this video!
And almost sound same at the same time...because of same Mesa 1x12 box and same microphone!
IR is most important part of sound...not amplifier anymore !
Great job!
I am surprised that the tone of MT15 is a very close to Engl Fireball.
Engl is my best!!! \m/
Ordered a used MT15 fingers crossed! Lol! You Rock Brah!
I listened to this over and over. For the distortion tests: MDR sounds best in the mix to me, the Laney sounds best in terms of getting the rawness out of the tone to come alive.
Dude this is amazing!
The 2 Mesa's followed by the PRS
Same for me, but in no particular order.
You seem like a great guy and your playing is great too ! Through the mix of all the computer programs and TH-cam the difference is very hard to distinguish unfortunately except for some slight nuance’s ! Great effort nonetheless! Cheers brother !
You ´ve got killer riffs my friend ! 👌🏽
Amazing tones u got there buddy. I was pleasantly surprised by the PRS MT15
Thanks! :)
Subbed.
Love that metal riff!
Wow, was reviewing the MT15 and saw this, great video!!!!
I've always been a boogie man, but that MT15 sounds really good for a 15 watter
Great demo! I think the 6505 & Fireball were my two favorite distorted sounds. The Fireball, however, was my least favorite clean tone.
You make everything sound awesome.... Boogie Mark V , ENGL and maybe 6505 MH but they all sound awesome!!! :)
Your channel is awesome.....love your tones and the groovy riffs
Look at this... This kind person here is just proving it: no matter what amp you use, they all sound similar. Why? Because they use the same exact IR. As for the difference between the amps, I have no clue-1%? 2%? I can't tell. But of course, you can tell, because you people are wizards.
Do the differences even matter to the audience? For 99% of them, it doesn't matter, unless your audience is also composed of wizards. The differences can only be used as an argument in the realm of guitar witchcraft and wizardry, because these wizards will always argue about almost everything.
Thank you for the video, Sir!
also to me the best was definitely the rectifier then the evh , the peavey and prs sounded almost identical
Man, this makes me want a mark series boogie even more!
Bang got buck I think the MT15, and the Terror lead the way.... for me. Great job on the comparison.
Engl fireball has full modern metal tone, but it's tight without dual recto sag.
The recto sag adds warmth. The fireball lacks both those qualities.
@@Van020280 fireball is a tube amp and unlike engl se it has enough warmth both on clean and rythm channels. Solos sounds juicy as well.
Best sounding comparison ever
This amp is gonna be my next purchase mate, thanks so much!!!
The Mesa sounds killer. It just fills the ear. It’s very full sounding.
I just recently bought the MT15 and love it
Same
Is it too loud for bedroom use?
DaltonThomas you can drop it down from the 15watts
@@Garrett-In-Canada Thinking about getting one. Never had a real tube amp and cab because they're super loud and I don't want to disturb th neighbors. So kinda stuck with Boss Katana for now.
DaltonThomas my house it attached no issues
Great video, thank you! Mesa, Laney and EVH sound best to me, with the Jim Root not far behind! But they all sound great in their own way.
MT15 and Dual recto where the best to my ears. That Dual Recto crushed!
MESA = OH MY GOD
@@SonicDriveStudio Not for me then. I like plugging and playing, not turning knobs
The 6505mh impressed the hell outta me. Jim Root Terror sounded pretty good too. The 5150III just slays everything though lol
PRS's chug+Mesa DR's Dynamic+EVH5150iii's note separation= perfect amp for every modern guitarist
In other word, ENGL Savage? :D
I have the MT15 with the matching MT 1x12 cab. It's a fun amp to play! Absolute bang for the buck.
Good to know I just got one too but I got 2 cabs I couldn't find a 212 matching cab for the TM15,
One of the most useful gear videos ever! Thx a lot man
