    VdC was the choice we made to target as our hub city. It's only a 12 minute train ride to Vila Praia de Âncora. We have been walking and cycling to meet our needs for months now. We are settling on a home for us in Âncora.

      @@OurContinuingAdventure .. For sure…You know I’m retired but working part time and I’ll be looking to find an apartment..So I have a lot of thinking to do!!. For one thing I Love Porto, but I do like sun and the ocean, in the winter time those rainy days are annoying 😩.. So I’m thinking anywhere from Aveiro to Viana do Castelo🙋🏻‍♂️. As well as Faro area because my wife had a sister there,having said all this, I still live my city of Porto…It’s obvious I have a lot of thinking to do😩😂… Take care..

    Valença on the Minho is a delightful fortress town on the Minho river, with Tuy/Tui over the Minho in Galicia, Spain. The train ride to and from Valença and Porto also goes through wonderful scenery.

    You guys are so inspiring! Only one more month to my second trip to Portugal. In addition to meeting you in Porto, will also be visiting Ponte de Lima, Viana, Braga and Barcelos. Just can't wait. You have really helped me to become comfortable with the thought of retiring in Portugal. Now, the hard part comes: when, where and all the not so little details of a place to live and insurance!!! GREAT job guys!!

    I live in galicia spain and I drove 2 hrs to viana do castelo, just a day trip and I love what I saw. I liked what I saw much better than oporto, not as crowded which I prefer and not as hilly. I'll have to go back again and see more of the city.

      Agreed. Everything you need is right there! We too will be back to VdC. Happy New Year p.s. we walked the Camino France in 2012 and fell in love with the Galicia area of Spain. This is why we chose to live in northern Portugal.

    Hello. Visited Viana do Castelo last year and loved it! We stayed up on the hill above the town so had to walk down and up those steps several times. It is actually not bad and the view from there is amazing as is the Basilica. There is a lovely hotel up there, that is where we stayed. If you go again, walk up and treat yourself to lunch or dinner up there. We are also looking at this charming city as a place to move to, for all the reasons you said. We were there on 25 de April, the day of the Carnation revolution, their Independence Day and it was very fun. We had a car because trains were on strike when we went, but good to know it is so connected and we could do fine without a car. Portugal is an amazing place and this was one of my favorites!

      Obrigado D. What is your preferred climate? Porto for me is the "sweet spot" of weather. It goes from Spring to Fall and back again. Not too cold, not too hot, and a rainy season that keeps things growing and the water supply plentiful. Find your weather "sweet spot" and then see where that is in Portugal.

    I so enjoyed your podcast appearance with Josh at ExpatsEverywhere today (as a Patreon supporter of theirs I got a sneak preview before they published it) and your mention of Viana do Castelo that I had to check out your review of it here. My wife Sara and I didn’t have time during our two weeks in Portugal in October to get up to VdC or Braga, but we plan to do so during our return trip in May. Both are on our list of possible places to retire to (that is still 5 years out for me), so thank you so much for the intel. We will be using Porto as a base for three days in early May so perhaps we can meet up then (Kalie says we really should meet you).

      I believe the rainy season is from November to January. Porto received a lot of rain, which caused some issues. However, after this year's drought the water is much needed. So on one hand glad to have the rain. On the other, it was not so great having so much rain on that one day where streets looked like rivers!

    • @OurContinuingAdventure
      @OurContinuingAdventure  ปีที่แล้ว

      We love Viana do Castelo as you probably gathered. Being just north of Porto and right on the Atlantic the weather is very similar to that here in Porto - upper 70's to mid 80's in the Summer, 40's and 50's in the Winter. Basically a New England Fall and Spring year round.
