Too often we equate personal style with uniqueness. Personal style is about personal preference, lifestyle, and expression. Its not about dressing differently than everyone else. Someone could wear sambas, baggy jeans, and a sweatshirt and that be their personal style. That is how they chose to express themselves and especially in the USA that matches a lot of peoples lifestyles. You can wear a very basic outfit and have personal style because personal style is not about being different its about your preferences. I always love your conceptual videos where you focus on ideas in fashion rather than the clothes themselves.
Depends on the context. If your “personal style” is to look like everyone else you don’t have a personal style meaning a style that is completely your own. You aren’t expressing yourself if your self expression is based on an external popular trend are you? You’re expressing someone else. So, not personal. I disagree. Personal style doesn’t have to be completely unique since you can have a lot of influences from others but it should be more unique than it is copied, which makes it personal to the wearer.
@@maverickbull1909I really like your take, I think our differece is in how we are defining person style. Also just because something is a trend doesn't mean it can't be used for self expression. It is very common for people to discover something they like and resonate with because of a trend. I would also argue wearing clothing just because it is trendy is expressing a lot about someone. It is showing a desire to fit in and a desire for validation. So in this way people are expressing who they really are through trends.
@@maverickbull1909 I think people through history always been like this. It's not like grunge kids/60's ivy/cowboys/90's skaters/lo' heads etc didn't all dress relatively same according to the social group they were apart of. Everyone adapts into social groups. What feels different today is that some people are picking style from online content rather than organically in real life. I sometimes watch videos of people walking through other countries downtowns and was astounded when I realized on every continent you see younger people wearing nike dunks. But honestly in the time of history we exist now it does express how an individual spends their time, interest, and social group if you wear popular items. If someone wore what's popular in the 80's when in the 80's it says I'm at this age and moment of time and someone not born in the 80's can't have that personal experience.
Mina Le complains that her personal style wasn't getting her brand deals within the fashion industry. The current industry doesn't care if you can dress well, only if you're marketable. I think the perspective was more late stage capitalism turning people into consumer drones than if dressing like yourself is actually culturally popular. Because of coarse it is, it's rebellious, it's provocative, youth culture does this naturally with each iteration. It's a problem with the industry. It platforms people who know little or nothing about fashion, the same faces we know too well because they have a huge following. So while we can yap about personal style forever, I think we should be more critical about what that means through the lens of the machine.
I feel a lot of people online idolise the term trying to get closer to their personal style but in reality, at this very moment, you have it, and you will always BE in your evolving personal style. It's not like one day you'll have reached ownership of the term like so many online. Whilst your personal style evolves, it's such a fun process curating it and seeing it ebb and flow especially as it interacts with changing trends, environments, etc
Yes to everything. Another question I ask myself when shopping is, “does this piece make sense with my wardrobe?” I’m finding my personal style more and more everyday. I think the past trend cycles have helped me understand what I actually like, and now I can add and subtract different aspects of them when creating an outfit. To answer your question, personal style will always be alive for those that care. If you genuinely care about expression, art, materials, history, then you will always have some sort of personal style in your core.
PPV: Developing a personal style is important to me. I just feel like it’s so easy to copy and paste. Also with me being a creative, I like my work to stand out and though I’m not the most stylish person, I want my style to be unique to me too. All of the trends, look books and fashion shows are just inspiration, but not something to copy bar for bar
This is actually such a refreshing take. I feel like many people who are very invested in fashion feel a sense of superiority over others because they themselves feel unique. When in reality like you said almost everyone takes inspiration from trends and will often be basic in their own subset of friends or groups that dress like them.
17:15 For me I think personal style is such an important way of telling people who you are without actually saying anything, which with all the social barriers we have at the moment is more important than ever. It may not be totally unique, but style is curated; it draws inspiration and therefore will never be totally unique for many.
Most people are dependent on others approval for how they show up, this is intensified on online spaces, the result is less independent choices in culture generally and this is reflected in style.
people have dressed in styles like punk in the past as a result of their environment, making their style into a movement as well because of the difficulties they were facing at that time. but now that's in the past, the environment around us has changed and progressed, and that is not to say punk is dead, but aesthetics that stood for something like punk will now thrive and be sported by it's admirers. its like a bright young person aspiring and looking up to their parents, friends, or idles. so them admire, this is not a threat to fashion.
Beyoncé grew up in Texas. Western fashion is HUGE in Texas, as well as most of the western states. The punk community loved pointy shoes so cowboy boots (with triple X toes ) were valued. Beyoncé was paying homage to growing up in TX. I’m an old punk & I still dress rather punk and LOVE western wear.
love cowboy bebop, at this point its kind of a comfort show for me. whenever life just gets too hectic I go back to it and watch a few episodes. and btwww the team behind the john wick movies and creator of cowboy bebop Shinichiro Watanabe are working on a new anime called Lazarus for 2025 ! cant waittt
8:46 “they’re actually buying things they find interesting” true! gotta love both the thing as the first step to loving how we feel when wearing the thing
I agree that personal style is a relatively new. Most of fashion history consisted of people dressing in geographically relevant cultural trends. This is why the 20s, 50s, 70s, 90s etc have such distinctive fashion associated with each decade. Even when people subverted mainstream trends, they were typically still dressing in a way that reflected the trends of a subculture. The primary reason people crave personal style now is because the trend cycles just moves so fast that it’s unreasonable for people to even attempt to keep up with. Trends don’t last a decade anymore, sometimes they barely last a year. That is why many of the trends now are to just wear non distinctive classic staples or to find your personal style. The ironically one of the biggest trends right now is to be anti-trend.
The pursuit of personal style seems to be core of why fashion trends (at least for where I live) continues to change. Many people I know tried trends to see if that is THEIR aesthetic. I was also one of those who tried to find their lane and now I feel that I have a personal style from such trend. By the way, would love for you to look into the rise of French Ivy or BCBG style that continues to grow in Paris especially!
it's definitely not dead just a bit different because it's really hard to find someone who does not take any style inspiration from others so you could say no one has personal style but i just think its in a different place right now
Appreciate the nod brodie. By me saying nothing has changed I just mean it’ll always be less people with personal style and more people wearing what is presented to the masses. But yea I respect your perspective.
Well, think about it to fit in society to fit in with friends you wear what they wear you wear what you see everyone wear it takes a special removed individual to really develop and express their own personal style and not a lot of people are that removed from society and people.
In the last 2 years I have only focused on personal style and I will keep that going. Plus I never see anyone that’s dressed like me so I stand out ALWAYS. I think this also has to do with the fact that I started only buying vintage/second hand 2 years ago.
I’m so glad or see someone talking positively about personal style. As someone who feels so connected to their style all the recent discussion about it has been so disheartening
Loveeeeed the video and the take, absolutely agreed with pretty much everything that you said, and lemme say, I’m a fashion student in Paris and you can tell people (mostly after first year) really just want to feel comfortable and they are soooo mindful about what they’re buying, they don’t care if it’s everyone’s cup of tea, they just like it! Also HUGE cowboy bebop fan
Man, you are doing so much for positive fashion. It really is all about the culture, and to be able to recognize where you come form while also appreciate other cultures. It's amazing, keep it up!
Honestly in my tine trying to get into fashion and just figure out what looks good on me and what I think is cool it cna be hard to have sooo many options. And personal style helps to build that muscle of i really like this piece and it can fit into my archetype of clothes i have making it easier to get dressed and stay well put together in how i feel "well put together" means
Maybe it helps adding language to your fashion sense to know what you'd like to convey with your style. For me personally, I resonate with words like dressing feminine, elegant and sometimes adding a little edge to it as well. This can help when you feel overwhelmed by liking everything :)
#PVV I think everybody has a sense of personal style, those that stand out perhaps have more confidence for a lack of a better world. When I was in art school, this group of folks from San Fran came into the studio for a lecture, man I wish u could remember names. One of the gents in the group was ask during q&a if he always dressed like he did that day. I will always remember his answer. “ as an artist I feel I have a choice everyday what costume I wear, today I wore this one for you all” that completely changed how I approached my garment choices from that point. There is so much inspiration in our world today, mix some paint create your own pallet, as Matty Matheson says “ we are just making sauce “
At least now a lot of people are asking themselves: what is my personal style? and discover it is very difficult to dissociate themselves from their "tribe"...
#pvv I think the pursuit of personal style and discovery of personal style is very important but the pursuit is where we all are right now. I think subconsciously we all yield to the norms and critiques of the instagram explore page even if its not a direct 1:1 copy. I think personal style primarily functions as it applies to one's daily life and not just being worn for the sake of fashion. There's a difference in someone who wear clothes, almost a costume like some guys on social media, compared to their influences (mainly celebrities or fictional characters) with very particular outfits designed for a specific reason. It all comes down to intentionality.
I'm feeling more like this year my personal style needs to come from living in clothes, not buying clothes. I've been dialed in on buying things I love and I'm ready to give them some love 🤗
#pvv I still care about personal style and for me, it's a way to express myself since I'm more on the quiet side. I think it's something that fuels my creativity when I don't have the time to indulge in my hobbies, but I also think it's just fun to dress for yourself and enjoy the pieces that you've gathered. This year though, I will do my best to take a backseat in purchasing clothing pieces or accessories since I feel like I have so much and to better my spending habits. Despite that, I think it'd be a good way to reflect on what my style is and see what I like/don't like.
I think accessibility to so much information and so many clothing has made the journey to my personal style much more interesting and filled with detours. And those experimental moments are mostly what people see when they see me. Do i think i have personal style, yes i think so. If there's no constraints, i think i can choose a style I'm personally comfortable with wearing forever and still be recognised for it. But i also like to try a bunch of things, and i thrift stuff so it's always a bit all over the place. Also suddenly seeing BTS Jin on Vogue in your video 😂❤
I thought personal style was becoming more trendy bc of my social media feeds until I started posting my fits online. Like the amount of ppl that make outlandish assumptions abt you based on your fashion choices is kinda wild ngl
I love that you mentioned the many design influences in cowboy bebop. Thats such an underappreciated aspect of the show. Most people tend to focus on strictly the sci-fi x western combo.
In my city there is a real push against fast fashion and more people are creating Upcycle Fashion, sometimes with trash. It’s a really exciting time to be interested in fashion and see what people are wearing. That said in the past when I used to visit my sister (outside of my subgroup) she had a fit over what I wore and began to give me clothes, go shopping with me and force clothing on me. I considered her style white suburban mom I did not wear this fashion when I got home (and I recently began to purge my closet of everything I never wore).. I do wonder what fashion is going to look like in the next 4 years…
My personal style has changed over the years, however it came down to what I find comfortable and best applicable to my lifestyle at the time. In the past, I liked mixing different styles and colors and such together and trying to find that unique look at is "me". Nowadays (I'm in my 30s), I dress more conservative with an except for my jewelery and bright colored hair and let my own being and actions speak for themselves. It simplifies my life choices and my look is still a decent snapshot of who I am.
Also, back then at each decade, there's usually always one trendy way to dress, like the 60s with the hippies, 70s with psychedelic rockstars, 80s with glam outfits and hairsprays. We're more diverse than we've ever been
#pvv I honestly don’t know how important “developing my personal style” is to me. I feel like just by being into fashion and having my own personal taste, my personal style is coming along naturally. I don’t really think that being yourself is something that needs to be performed in the way a lot of people online seem to portray it. I feel like if you’re true to yourself and you spend time with fashion, your personal style is bound to come through eventually
#PVV I want to develop a personal style, but make it appropriate to the circumstances. Also, I would like to say that its really cool that you come back and talk about changing your mind. So many people instead choose to dig their heels in start a fight.
I follow many fashion content creators and they all push the same clothes but there are unquie creators that bring different ways to wear clothing and I am also am in the jewelry industry and everyone comes in purchasing the exact same thing.
I'd say that personal style is still quite alive and well. Personal style, hence the name, describes what your style is and what YOU want to wear. Even tho other may wear the same thing, they still made that choice to wear that certain piece of garment or item. Nowadays, people tend to wear things such as baggy pants, specifically jeans. Baggy jeans is seen as their personal style as they chose to wear those specific types of clothing or item, even tho you may see others wear them as well.
I think people should wear what they want, but in recent history, you could look at someone and have a very good idea of the music, sport, job and lifestyle they were into or had, it was a uniform. If you want to wear western wear and have no connection to it other than liking the look, at that point it is a costume.
I remember a time when most everyday people who did not belong to a subculture or tribe basically dressed the same. It was a costume of certain types of clothes, cuts and colours. Sub cultures and tribes in those days were individuals who dressed differently as in a means to express their identity through their interest, music was a huge influence at this time on sub cultures and individuals within that, people dressed almost very similar as it felt good to distinguish yourself from the norm and to let people know this is my interest, this is what I belong to. I remember when Sex in the City ( as much as I disliked the show ) aired on television there was this whole new idea as to how the normies could dress/ a shift and I think you could possibly argue that the show was one of the most influential mediums in how it changed people’s perspective in how they could dress. Now past that people no longer are identifiable to what subculture they belong because fashion has come a long way in the past 25 years. I would say we now live in a Post-modern world in regards to fashion where people are taking inspiration from all different tribes/ subcultures to express themselves. Back then people who would mix different subcultures in their fashion would be called eccentric but now it’s the norm which is very positive to see the fashion world in this mindset. I think personal style like I said if done well is Post-modern. And what’s most important it’s not what you’re wearing it’s how you’re wearing it.
sniffing this for research for an upcoming video 👀but couldn't keep my mouth shut: 1- YES - not everyone is equally passionate about what they wear, and those who are, might not be passionate about wearing "original" stuff - so fashion might not be as much about creativity as we like to think, and that's ok + doesn't mean they lack personal style 2- we've always been influenced coff coff copying from others, we simply have a bigger sea to fish from, which creates a bigger illusion of diversity than the one we experience in our day-to-day lives, but also as we follow people with similar styles to ours, a bigger illusion of "copy paste influencers" i think personal style ultimately seats on the bubble of clothes each person is willing to experiment with, not if that bubble is made out of popular stuff 🤔
I don’t think personal style is dead but I think our cultural perception of what “personal style” means was really narrow for the past few years and now our definition is expanding. A lot of us are realizing that the way we dress is influenced by a lot of different factors and will change over time and will sometimes align with what’s popular, but that doesn’t mean it’s not personal. Which I feel like mina le’s video touched on too even if she came to a slightly different conclusion
#pvv Whether "personal style" is important to me depends on how you define the term. You mention questions of people wearing clothes "authentically," and that makes me think about the enormous popularity of workwear right now. You also mention "Is it cool?" as your first question when evaluating whether you like something. You follow up with a more thoughtful reflection on how and why something is cool and speaks to you specifically, but tbh I think a lot of people don't think further than that first question, and so they end up wearing things in a way that feels shallow or inauthentic because they don't have an answer for why something is cool, beautiful, practical, or useful [insert whatever desired adjective you aim for when getting dressed here]. My own relationship with workwear has changed drastically over the past two years. I thought it was boring and didn't care for it or think much about it until I started working a job where my clothes needed to provide durability, range of motion, and unusual and specific functionality that I couldn't get from my "regular" clothes. Idk how I feel about the word "authenticity," as it's pretty loaded and I'm not gonna do all the work of defining it here, but I will say that before my job change, wearing workwear would not have felt authentic to whatever "personal style" I have. I would have felt awkward, like I was wearing a costume. But now that I've needed the qualities workwear has to offer and lived some of my life in it, I wear it much more naturally (and I appreciate it a lot more than I used to). In the same vein, I feel admiration for people who wear their culture's traditional dress, but even though I think it's cool, I'm unlikely to ever dress that way because I *can't* have the same meaningful (and yes, personal) relationship they have with that clothing. References, I'll take, sure, but there's something to be said for people living their real lives in their clothes, and that's a quality I value way more in my personal style than the kind of creative and highly individual expression that most people mean when they use the term. I'm not really trying to represent or express a self or a character when I get dressed. I care far more about how I feel in a garment than in how I look to others. While I am to some degree interested in what clothes mean and in how they look, I'm more interested in them as textiles and as objects in and of themselves. I'm aware that any outfit I put together will say something about me, and some level of coherence is important to me when getting dressed, but I'm not aiming for a personal style that reflects ME, exactly. It's nice to have a little distance between me and the world, and I find that distance through treating my clothes as objects that perform functions as I move through my life.
for me personal style is wear what you want with confidence and always keep it real that's it I guess 😅 always love to hear you speaking about fashion, keep up the good work Drew 🫡
there's nothing wrong with being trendy but having no personal style is entirely a skill issue. it's literally never been easier to style yourself uniquely. I'm out here wearing merch of bands that released 1 tape in the 80s and were never heard from again. I'm rocking vintage Yohji I bought on Ebay Japan. I might get some CCP off Grailed. I'm learning how to sew from TH-cam so I can make/alter clothes to fit me and me alone perfectly. You might say "other people are doing it too" but nobody will do it exactly like you
I constantly work to achieve my own personal style. One of the reasons my stylr has changed is because I want to be different, yet again that is not that difficult to achieve here where im from
I completely agree with you, you don't need to live the life to wear the clothing, but at the same time I will always cringe when people where specifically band merch for a band they don't even know or listen to. That kind of specific inauthenticity always gets under my skin lol
Yeah I watched that girls video that you (kinda) reference with this topic and I found a lot of her points a bit silly. It relied way too much on her own mistakes in her style journey and to project that onto others was a bit strange. Her chasing this idea of a “unique” style was clearly superficial and while there are definitely many others who do that as well it has nothing to do with the reality of today’s fashion scene. She was using quotes from like 60 years ago when trying explain what it truly means to have personal style, as if we have not HEAVILY evolved from those times in terms of the way you can express yourself in fashion. She also references the style of a bunch of different fashion designers, when those people are not stylists, never claimed to be, and would likely disagree with this glorification of simplicity. Overall I found a lot of those videos to really be projections from people who were heavily insecure with their own style, and then in an effort to achieve what they wanted, got to a point where their “unique” way of dressing was not something that actually resonated with them once the gleam of newness (or whatever word you would use) wore off. Thank u for this video bro ❤
On the cultural appropriation vs appreciation point I think one thing to highlight is context. It’s one thing to have an appreciation for different fashion that isn’t one’s own. Whether that be from an ethnic or cultural perspective. I think the issue comes in is when it’s popularized as trendy and thus adopted by an individual because of it. Something that I think is all too common in this day and age. I then think the individual has to ask if they like it because theirs a genuine interest or are they wearing to fit in with the current zeitgeist. If it’s the latter I wouldn’t call that personal style and I’d personally deem that as appropriation. Plus I think the internet, while it makes information accessible, it can easily remove context of why something is important to a respective culture. I think personal style is developed over time and should be something that is unique to a persons genuine interests and divorced from the bubble of social media. Personal style is for you and you alone and not something that should be up for consumption by the public or an audience. I don’t think that means you’ll never encounter others who may dress in a similar way but I think it’s very common nowadays when people say they’ve dressed unique to their tastes when I can easily point to another who’s “style” is similar in the same time period.
#PVV: Developing a personal style is important to me because I feel like I became to realize I didnt like how I dressed lol. I never really cared to put a fit on and when I went out I would be like damn I dont really like or feel comfortable in the outfit I have. So Ive made it a mission since last year to really discover what I really like and play around with clothes in order to develop something I actually enjoy. I want to go outside and be like dang I reallyyyy like this outfit, and I have recently and im proud of myself. However this will be a never ending journey of developing personal style because myself and everyone are ever changing individuals
Do people forget how fashion has always been this way?? How can we attribute a certain look to particular decades otherwise? We all know what the 20's, 50's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's looked like. If everyone was unique we wouldn't have that "look". And don't forget that quirky and unique also has a look. It's always a very similar vibe. Personal style isn't about looking different from everyone. It's the style that is personal to each of us and makes us feel the best while we navigate life. If you wear it because you love it, congratulations, you have personal style.
Interestingly enough I have been on again/off again been wondering if I am culturally appropriating being a black woman wearing kimonos. I have loved geisha and japanese aesthetics since i was 10, now I am soon to turn 52. You just gave me a new perspective to look at. I also dabble in kawaii and anime fashion and I also love african wax prints and tend mix them with the japanese prints and the kawaii and the anime. I also like to diy things i own. #PPV I enjoy my personal style because it is fun to dress the way i want and I enjoy to look at others personal style for the same reason. No, I don't think it's dead.
#PVV In a way yes personal style has become more important but also not. The pieces I wear are more "basic", for example currently a plain long black sleeve shirt is my favorite wardrobe item. But at the same time, this does feel closest to my personal style and what I feel most comfortable in right now and I did buy it very intentionally. So while the clothing might be less unique and feel less "personal", it still resonates with me the most.
What exactly are we appreciating? The article of clothing, how it's made, the designer, the brand, or the intended market? I feel that at times, depending on the wearer, not all details are appreciated.
my style is emo. i let no one tell me that i'm too old for it. emo resonates with my soul so it's super easy to put on. i'm doing my best to not buy fast fashion
Everybody has a personal style! Something that we can relate that person with. It can be his identity i.e Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg. I have started developing my own style by taking cues from many Fashion channel's. Even your channel has inspired me on that journey.
#PVV Pursuing personal style to me is extremely important, mainly because I tie in fashion and freestyling together. In freestyling, biting other people's moves, flows, groove, signatures, etc can be taken as disrespectful, unoriginal, and basic, but like how "inspiration" can be taken from something, it can be seen as paying respect to the freestyler that the move, flow, signature, or whatever was taken. Personal style is kind of that small difference that makes the person unique, as long as they're willing to show that difference through fashion or through some other means. Another good example is MMA. I don't know much about it, but I understand that the fighter typically has one discipline that they identify with more than the rest, then takes bits and pieces from other martial arts to better their own fighting style that's hand picked and tested by themselves. I do strongly believe that it is hard to truly show off personal style without being categorized into some genre of fashion, but what makes the difference is maybe in color, accessory, how it's worn, or whatever else it may be that makes it distinct. Many people worry about wearing workwear since they're not the poster child worker in Carhartt's image, but they could maybe want some durable, highly praised pieces from a brand that makes great utilitarian designs. Same goes for Asian aesthetics bleeding into styling. Growing up as a Korean-American, some people had issues with me wearing a lot of baggier clothes that looked like the Cholo type of clothes, but I grew up wearing mainly had-me-downs from friends, family, and donation drives. Now I still wear oversized since it's been a personal part of my life and the most familiar feeling, but many categorize my styling as the Japanese City Boy style now 😅 Anyways, thanks so much for the great vids over the years and introducing your love for Japanese fashion and denim, it's been a great segway for me to explore more overseas styling and brands ❤
I would say algorithm dressing is just a stepping stone on the way to personal style. And gen Z is about the age where personal style is developed. Gen Z is reaching a point where unique style is valued over others perception of your style.
The pursuit of personal style is important as it’s the journey where one may find themselves in the grander way if you get me. Trends and the sort are solid footpaths on the road to discovery but it’s generally when we divert a little that we find what we truly desire AKA personal style. Just my thoughts. Bebop a classic #PVV
#pvv , for me at least even though i post fashion content and love fashion i’ve always been interested with personal style even before i started posting . The area i went to school in had a very homogeneous style and outlook on style ie everyone dressed the exact same . Me personally that never resonated with me so i would try out different things nothing crazy at the start but as i grew as personal and into my style its blossomed and i live where my style is at rn
I think your discussion of what makes something “basic” should also include: Not all subcultures are equal. The subculture of washed jeans and black top is way more popular and “permissible”, “the norm”, “normalized” in society. What I mean is that there are levels of “basic”. A subculture of punk is wayyy less “basic” than a subculture which more closely aligns itself with fast fashion brands (H&M, Zara blah blah). So then we could define a threshold were something becomes “basic” which i think should be related to what’s permissible in the patriarchal system which still influences mainstream fast fashion. But sure, if you don’t want to add a threshold, you can still call something more basic than something else due to meaning behind wearing some stuff. Sadly, as more and more stuff becomes commodified, there will be less meaning behind certain subcultures in fashion. That’s late stage capitalism.
I picked up sewing to have exactly what i want and also to let myself dream beyond the boundaries of what’s available. Maybe my pieces are nothing crazy but at least I don’t feel confined by size, shape, lack of “that special something” in pieces when thrifting or looking through old clothes.
I haven’t watched yet but I wanted to say personal style is always something that adopts from others any trend u do is your personal style if u truly like it it’s only trend chasing if you put something on for others validation and I think that’s at a all time low
Great points made. I Saw a video of a band called Dead Poet Society. A comment criticising the band personal style for dressing like gamers. In contrast to the guest vocalist who was dressed like a punk. Curious to know your thoughts on fashion impact on musicians.
Personal style is also influenced by your peers (especially if you are in a minority that is not race based) and class. I do LOVE your personal style but it is not my personal style (we both have a love of denim). I do love hearing you talk about your personal style. (Also I sew and make my own patterns)
To me what makes people basic is when people don’t got no sauce. For example, all these people wearing baggy jeans but wearing them up to their belly button. Or lacing timbs completely to the neck. Wearing choked out dingy air forces. People got the drip but don’t got no sauce. Put some slack in it. Wear the clothes don’t let them wear you. But most importantly, it’s in you not on you.
I think the term ‘personal style’ has been over complicated. It’s simple and your list of 4 factors speaks to that. If you like wearing it and it resonates with you then that’s your personal style. Point-blank-simple.
@@danielnichols6024 yeah i get where you’re coming from
@JM_GodFirst good points
Ofc drew will defend “personal style” his entire influencer career was built from and capitalizes on algorithms and trends lol
5 seconds in and I already know we got an instant classic on our hands
Legendary glaze
pop it out ya mouth
Absolutely, when you know you know
Yes to everything.
Personal style is classic, will never go out of Fashion
By the way, would love for you to look into the rise of French Ivy or BCBG style that continues to grow in Paris especially!
it's definitely not dead just a bit different because it's really hard to find someone who does not take any style inspiration from others so you could say no one has personal style but i just think its in a different place right now
YO DREW thanks for being you man me and my fashion forward friends are always excited when you post and we get together at work and talk ab the vid
Ps your new lean towards essay style videos has been a real evolution of the channel
Really appreciate that you ended up addressing this point in such detail♥
I’m so glad or see someone talking positively about personal style. As someone who feels so connected to their style all the recent discussion about it has been so disheartening
Cowboy bebop fans lock in
Loveeeeed the video and the take, absolutely agreed with pretty much everything that you said, and lemme say, I’m a fashion student in Paris and you can tell people (mostly after first year) really just want to feel comfortable and they are soooo mindful about what they’re buying, they don’t care if it’s everyone’s cup of tea, they just like it!
This can help when you feel overwhelmed by liking everything :)
bro really tried to put forth that the one of the most famous animes of all time is not loved by everyone who watches it
#PVV I think everybody has a sense of personal style, those that stand out perhaps have more confidence for a lack of a better world.
The Cowboy Bebop reference yessss! I went to a midnight screening of the movie as a teen. Bloody great series!
I'm feeling more like this year my personal style needs to come from living in clothes, not buying clothes. I've been dialed in on buying things I love and I'm ready to give them some love 🤗
Love your videos and thoughts. Also Cowboy Bepop is a vibe😎
You are You so be You!!
This defense of basic is a wild stance
I'd say that personal style is still quite alive and well. Personal style, hence the name, describes what your style is and what YOU want to wear. Even tho other may wear the same thing, they still made that choice to wear that certain piece of garment or item. Nowadays, people tend to wear things such as baggy pants, specifically jeans. Baggy jeans is seen as their personal style as they chose to wear those specific types of clothing or item, even tho you may see others wear them as well.
Cowboy bebop is not only my favorite anime of all time, but may be my favorite piece of art of all time
100%!!!
And what’s most important it’s not what you’re wearing it’s how you’re wearing it.
sniffing this for research for an upcoming video 👀but couldn't keep my mouth shut:
1- YES - not everyone is equally passionate about what they wear, and those who are, might not be passionate about wearing "original" stuff - so fashion might not be as much about creativity as we like to think, and that's ok + doesn't mean they lack personal style
2- we've always been influenced coff coff copying from others, we simply have a bigger sea to fish from, which creates a bigger illusion of diversity than the one we experience in our day-to-day lives, but also as we follow people with similar styles to ours, a bigger illusion of "copy paste influencers"
i think personal style ultimately seats on the bubble of clothes each person is willing to experiment with, not if that bubble is made out of popular stuff 🤔
Cowboy Bebop has my heart
It’s how i got introduced to anime
Not much like it but now i view it as a good thing
African American people were some of the first cowboys. Beyoncé just brought it back to this moment. She’s why it’s trending
there's nothing wrong with being trendy but having no personal style is entirely a skill issue.
it's literally never been easier to style yourself uniquely. You might say "other people are doing it too" but nobody will do it exactly like you
Cowboy Bebop is my fav too! Classic
I constantly work to achieve my own personal style. One of the reasons my stylr has changed is because I want to be different, yet again that is not that difficult to achieve here where im from
My favourite bebop eps are toys in the attic and mushroom samba, they're also pretty rewatchable.
I completely agree with you, you don't need to live the life to wear the clothing, but at the same time I will always cringe when people where specifically band merch for a band they don't even know or listen to. That kind of specific inauthenticity always gets under my skin lol
They people who made cowboy bebop also made this popular anime called samurai champloo that I love.
THIS is what we're all talking about. I'll say it again: 2025 is the year for personal style
That jacket you’ve got on though!! Did I miss the vid of you picking that up?
Fashions fade style is eternal - YSL
Do people forget how fashion has always been this way?? How can we attribute a certain look to particular decades otherwise? We all know what the 20's, 50's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's looked like. If everyone was unique we wouldn't have that "look". And don't forget that quirky and unique also has a look. It's always a very similar vibe. Personal style isn't about looking different from everyone. It's the style that is personal to each of us and makes us feel the best while we navigate life. If you wear it because you love it, congratulations, you have personal style.
Personal style is ♾∞
Interestingly enough I have been on again/off again been wondering if I am culturally appropriating being a black woman wearing kimonos.
DREW THE GOAT
Damn this video really put the mind to work ngl
Now I still wear oversized since it's been a personal part of my life and the most familiar feeling, but many categorize my styling as the Japanese City Boy style now 😅
Anyways, thanks so much for the great vids over the years and introducing your love for Japanese fashion and denim, it's been a great segway for me to explore more overseas styling and brands ❤
my morning newspaper is here just in time for breakfast
I would say algorithm dressing is just a stepping stone on the way to personal style. And gen Z is about the age where personal style is developed. Gen Z is reaching a point where unique style is valued over others perception of your style.
The pursuit of personal style is important as it’s the journey where one may find themselves in the grander way if you get me. Trends and the sort are solid footpaths on the road to discovery but it’s generally when we divert a little that we find what we truly desire AKA personal style. Just my thoughts. Bebop a classic #PVV
crazy cause I'm making a video on this too. no, it's not dead & will never be. even unironic "norm core" is still personal style.
#pvv , for me at least even though i post fashion content and love fashion i’ve always been interested with personal style even before i started posting . The area i went to school in had a very homogeneous style and outlook on style ie everyone dressed the exact same . Me personally that never resonated with me so i would try out different things nothing crazy at the start but as i grew as personal and into my style its blossomed and i live where my style is at rn
understand why people say “personal style is dying “ but for me at least i’m just getting started 😂
I think your discussion of what makes something “basic” should also include:
Not all subcultures are equal.
How how much did it cost you to book the trip to Paris?
Great points made. I Saw a video of a band called Dead Poet Society. A comment criticising the band personal style for dressing like gamers. In contrast to the guest vocalist who was dressed like a punk.
Curious to know your thoughts on fashion impact on musicians.
i knew this video was coming
woo! cowboy beebop and the good place mention!
Personal style is also influenced by your peers (especially if you are in a minority that is not race based) and class. I do LOVE your personal style but it is not my personal style (we both have a love of denim). I do love hearing you talk about your personal style. (Also I sew and make my own patterns)
cowboy bebop is undoubtedly my favorite anime. simply amazing
Cowboy Bebop is one of the best anime (past or present). Its so unique and still very relevant. Everyday I aspire to be as cool as Spike!
Excellent editing putting that pic of Faye when explaining the plot of Cowboy Bebop 🫡
now I want ranch dressing
To me what makes people basic is when people don’t got no sauce. For example, all these people wearing baggy jeans but wearing them up to their belly button. Or lacing timbs completely to the neck. Wearing choked out dingy air forces. People got the drip but don’t got no sauce. Put some slack in it. Wear the clothes don’t let them wear you. But most importantly, it’s in you not on you.
I also love cowboy bebop! Got 2 posters on my wall rn!
Fuckk yea cowboy bebop !!
Also personal style to me is definitely the fusion of all my passions and influences which can include trends.
cowboy bebop is such a w anime and the art so good, its the only anime i watch and the only one i will ever need
I think the term ‘personal style’ has been over complicated. It’s simple and your list of 4 factors speaks to that. If you like wearing it and it resonates with you then that’s your personal style. Point-blank-simple.

Love your take but on cultural appropriation vs appreciation. That topic is not easy to cover
