@@HITGolfReviews in combination with this one, a training aid that shows how to teach control of club face would be useful. The combination of these two would be ideal!
i took lessons early this year for the first time ever. I was swinging massively over the top since I was 14 years old and I am 53 now. The pro showed me how to level out my swing and I was good at lessons, but 30 years of swinging improperly constantly came back. I have this training aid in my garage and weekly I just take practice swings using it to keep my swing from the inside out. I am striking the ball consistently for the first time in my life. This is a great tool if you are a slicer and come over the top.
I have to apologize Rick... right out of the gate was old footage at the range.. wondered why is Rick showing video of another coach.. it was young Rick with no beard.. still killing it!! keep it up!!
This is easily one of my favorite videos you've done. I practice at an indoor facility with many training tools available but frankly dont really know how to use them all. Videos like this, or any drill type video (even simple ones like towel under the arms) are incredibly helpful
If you hit at an outdoor range you can bypass the plate altogether and just stick the alignment sticks into the ground. People have been doing that for years. I suppose this helps for those who only have access to indoor ranges or a lot of winter conditions though.
I have this training aid, it is really good but I have to disagree that you won’t hurt yourself - I come over the top and used this to come more inside, first few were fine and the swing felt/looked great… until I went slightly over the top 😂 the soft side of your hand going into the end of an alignment stick absolutely kills! DEFINITELY get a noodle to go over the alignment stick!
Excellent aid and explanation Rick - really useful for newer golfers to get a grip on why the ball does what it does! Any recommendation on a cheap implement / device to measure your swing path?
My path is fine without hitting a ball, soon as I go to hit the ball…over the top. I need to hit a ball while practicing. It’s the only true feel in my opinion.
Love training aids specifically like this one. I’ve got the Tour Aim one and it does the same thing but it’s a lot easier to carry around in the golf bag because the metal/plastic base piece is entirely flat. Just pop the alignment stick in the holes they’ve drilled into it!
I have this. I leave it in my car and before a round I hit a dozen or 2 balls and it really helps my slice. I’ve definitely hit my alignment sticks several times on the range. It’s loud and embarrassing but the results are worth it. Not a miracle aid by any means but it corrects your slice to a degree.
My pro got me using his during a lesson. It worked very well . I have since brought one but have not used it yet ! Doh! But I got a 2 hour session on the range this evening, so I will be taking it
Good stuff. Would be good to see more training aids and practice stations that could be set up at range or in sim. Was considering buying one of those also thinking of the one at start of video.
Great video as always. I have seen on the net about the wrist training aid when your in the right position it makes a sound. Would be good to know your thoughts. Thanks rick for the content
Had a cheap one from amazon for about a year, any time I start getting over the top I get it back out and it helps. The worst thing about it is when you do a bad swing at the range hitting the alignment stick and make other people look round wondering what the noise was
You need to be careful with only looking at "resultant" club path, what you need to be more concerned with is swing direction (i don't know what foresight calls it) which is the direction of the clubhead WITHOUT the angle of attack. Remember, club path is a 3D measurement and takes into account angle of attack (AOA). So Rick is achieved a 0.7* in to out 3D resultant path but he did that with a 8.9* downwards AOA (much too steep). Remember the d-plane, hitting "down" shifts the path to the right. No one would say a ~9* AOA with a 7 iron is a great way to play golf. What this basically is showing you, is that Rick's swing direction is much more out to in, say like 7* but because he is hitting down on it almost 9* the RESULTING path is 0.9*. If you have access to a TM, Flightscope, or foresight with club data you have to HAVE to monitor swing direction and AOA and then let the club path be what it may be. Look up the TM averages for AOA for a 7 iron, it's between 2.5 and 4* down depending on LPGA or PGA tour. Always make sure you understand the above or work with an instructor that does. Otherwise you are just "chasing numbers" and may not end up with a functional golf swing.
I’m looking for any reason to dislike this. I think almost all aides are just gimmicks. This seems rather straight forward and makes perfect sense. Forces you to correct your path without all the technical talk and confusion.
My local pro gave me a cheaper option, pipe lagging, pool noodle what ever you want to call, gently warm it on a radiator or with a hair drier then bend in to a gentle curve. Then lay it on the ground just a fraction outside your intended swing path, it absolutely forces you to stay inside the line on both the takeaway and down swing with zero chance of damaging you or you precious (and expensive) clubs. Bonus, it only weighs about 1/2 an ounce !
I have the same issue as you (thanks to the swing changes I went through after having an ACL reconstruction on my front leg). Now it is healed properly I can swing correctly again but need to fix up this inside swing path and I have been wondering if this type of aid would be any good, thanks for the video! Now can you fix my putting?
Do the same thing at the range with alignment sticks stuck in the ground or in the ball bucket with a driver cover on the end to stop me coming over the top and slicing. Fair to say my alignment sticks are pretty battered and bruised..... 😅
Like the stuff you do Rick, have you ever thought of actually using any of these training aids yourself ? They might help the outside takeaway, drop inside and flip release 😂
Like training aid videos, something to make practice sessions more productive. Something to deliberately work on rather than swing away, would like to see the Prosendr
This exact drill is what got me to stop slicing every club in my bag. I put the alignment stick about a foot back and a foot to the right and forced myself to swing on plane. Now I struggle with a hook lol
My pro showed my the range ball basket training aid for coming over the top. After I smashed every basket in the place, I had an epiphany and used my yoga brick instead... Worked great, but now all of my irons are bent... Ahhh, jeez, golf, I guess l'll just have to buy some more!
Could you please do one for squaring the club face or releasing the club? I’m struggling with that so badly currently and I don’t want to waste my money on something that either doesn’t work or even causes bad habits.
Brilliant training aid that I've been using on and off for the last year. Proper piece of kit that would help the majority of golfers. Would deffo recommend to anyone thinking of getting one!
Over the top out to in. When you turn from the target and rotate, from the top feel like you’re pulling a chain down while having your back to the target. Like keep your back to the target longer. Hope this helps
Would love it if there was an aid that could help me hit cleaner. I tend to hit 2-3 inches behind the ball when i miss. It goes straight, but i lose so much distance.
The problem with training aids is there's a million of them, they all do the same thing, and most are useless. also it's easy to become too dependent upon the aid to the point where it doesn't translate to the golf course. The tour striker ball is great though.
Everyone's main mission should be face control at impact no matter the path... then path... your path with less closed face would do u good... but u max that pull draw with closed face wayyyy too often ... ;)
Check to see if you have a reverse spine angle at the top of your swing, or possibly you have too much arch in your lower back at set up, V’s a neutral lower back position - I would also look at your hips and whether you have adequate internal and external rotation. Poor hip mobility will result in trying to find that range of motion somewhere else - possibly your back

Budget version: stick alignment rod in the ground. Even if you don’t have access to a grass range you can still practice path without hitting a ball.

yes! train-aids are key. the water bottle is still my favorite one. great stuff.
I’ve been using 1 of these for years. Great bit of kit. When u 1st it u end up hitting it and there is a big clatter and sticks everywhere
One of these fixed my swing. I do the same as Rick. I went from 5 degrees to 0.8

Just press insides of elbows slightly towards each other at address and then maintain that pressure between insides of elbows, during takeaway.

I’ve had the swing plate for over a year. I practice with it regularly. Same issue as you Rick.

Suggestion: review the GEM & Duffix swing trainers
Couldn’t you just use the ground to point your alignment stick in? That way there’s the saved money for Guinness. Just a point.
Difference between swing plate and alignment disc?
You will break graphite shafts if you hit allingnment sticks...I may have done that 3 times with driver over the years 😮
Tour aim should be next. Supposedly you can use it for putting too
I guess sticking an alignment aid in the ground at the correct angle would work similarly, right?
Could you please do one for squaring the club face or releasing the club? I’m struggling with that so badly currently and I don’t want to waste my money on something that either doesn’t work or even causes bad habits.
Take two alignment rods. Lay one down and put the other through the gaps of a plastic range bucket. Done.

Place something fairly low behind the ball so it forces you to actually hit the ball and just always practice with that thing
