I find so interesting how the kpop system is now being adapted for other markets, when kpop idol groups were originally inspired by Japanese idols and American styles and music genres, it’s like things are coming full circle
I think because they perfected it. It started out similar to Japan and America but eventually it became there own and they got it down to a science. And now people paying attention, other markets thought they were doing it the best when slowly Korea has been rising to domination. also I know this video was about girl groups but its interesting the most successful group out of kpop BTS. I think of the main reasons they are as big as they are is because they went alittle outside of the usually kpop route. Yes it was an audition program but the fact that the ceo was like "yo just write about your lives and stories. I wont force you to practice and give you strict rules, all I ask is you infuse you life experiences into genuine music" For kpop its mainly stuff being given to you and being forced to follow what the company says, but since they were given so much creative freedom, people liked that and felt a genuine connection to them and grew such a massive loyal fanbase. Ive seen companies in japan say "we could make out own BTS if we wanted" but you cant made that.....since again it came from there lives and there growth as humans.
@@CheerUp2 kpop as a whole and Bangtan specifically getting so big is a very fascinating phenomenon with so many factors at play and so many things lining up at the right time and I find it very interesting. Like of course good music, hard work, talents and skills all play part in it but so do having the right timing and straight up luck and it makes me wonder how they would be doing if they had done everything the exact same but at a different time. Also I think that how big the country is also plays part of that makes sense? Like the US and the UK have a lot of influence on other country bc geopolitical stuff and the US specifically is a very big country with a lot of people, and Japan also has a lot of people and that gives them very big markets that can just, exist and keep having new artists come into the scene and find an audience. But with smaller countries like South Korea there’s only so many popular groups you can have before it gets saturated and people get tired of it and that’s why when kpop labels noticed there was an interest overseas they took the chance immediately. If you compare Bangtan with the biggest japanese boy group (Arashi) like, they never really did anything that was marketed specifically for overseas fans cause the jpn fans are more than enough to keep the show going. Or (since it’s a video about girl groups lol) the focus Blackpink has on international audiences is huge compared with the one that AKB or Nogizaka have had (I hope this comment makes sense cause I feel like it’s all over the place) Edit cause I forgot to add that Japanese “BTS/kpop-like” groups are still very much intended more to the japanese public itself since the cool images and polished performances are what the public (esp young people) are interested in today, and they still make a small portion of the music scene. As successful as JO1 or NiziU et all are sells wise they are still just One More Act out of thousands and a good chunk of the population has never heard of them, meanwhile Bangtan or Blackpink are very well known domestically and internationally and sometimes whatever they’re up to even makes the news
@@parurushi I agree it very much timing as you said and a bit of luck. Hard work of course but the timing helped so much. Like since they were small and were on shows they used social media a lot. It was the company channel and group channel that only posted music videos and serious stuff while they posted goofy stuff that a lot of fans enjoyed. LITTLE MIX IS THE PERFECT GG (atleast in my opinion) They have the TALENT. They have INCLUSIVITY. They can DANCE. They can SING. They can HARMONIZE. And they did all this while constantly being scrutinized, not getting appreciated, getting sabotaged, suffering racism & sexism and soo much more... I definitely think that it takes sooo much from them (that we don't know about) to be in a girl group for 10 YEARS and still be "relevant". I truly hope that they get to have the glorious era which they deserve.
Fun fact: Britney Spears was originally in a girl group called ‘Innosense’, she went solo before the group debuted and eventually disbanded before gaining any notoriety

To echo @Reded69's comment below - a grave error not to mention Girls Aloud, given their achievements (in the UK at least) at the time! Honourable mention also to Sugababes who were hugely popular. Bananarama in the 80s were also significant because they were total amateurs coming out of punk - they weren't professionals, they rarely sang solos, and had a fresh attitude at the time and demanded more autonomy over their own material. Thinking about boy bands, they've definitely declined in the west - here in the UK we had Take That, Westlife, Boyzone, A1, 5ive, Blue in the late 90s/early 00s, but with the exception of a handful like JLS, Union J and of course 1D at the turn of the decade, there's been a drought of boy bands; I'd posit the rise of male-dominated indie(-pop) bands and later solo artists had some part in this. Perhaps synchronised dance moves became less appealing than guitars. That said, I do think Busted and McFly could be called boy bands despite them playing their own instruments. (this begs the question that how they are marketed/consumed determines where they fall in the "group"/"band" distinction....) It's also weird looking back and remembering mixed-gender bands - again over here at the turn of the century there was Hear'Say, Liberty X, S Club 7, S Club Juniors, and others, although they didn't quite have the success that single-gender bands had. At least nowadays it's steadily becoming more common for indie/rock bands to be mixed-gender. I really enjoy your videos, thank you for flying the flag for intellectual fangirls - keep up the good work and please mastermind a new girl group of your own!
Also we need these upcoming girl groups to be able to have creative freedom and a hand in writing or producing their music because I know that’s what will help them really identify with their sound and actually like the stuff they are putting out rather than labels picking songs for them.
Thank you for promoting Boys World so much there so amazing and hopefully, they make it big and as a star, I appreciate it a lot for you to be promoting our girls!!!
An excellent vid but the fact that you went from the Spice Girls to Little Mix without mentioning Girls Aloud feels odd. Girls Aloud may have not cracked the US market and remain largely unknown here but they did have a significant part in Girl group history. They broke the domination of boy bands in the UK in the early 21st century. They were created in 2002 on the third incarnation of the Popstars franchise, The Rivals, the 5 girls were picked by the UK TV voters from a pool of ten finalists selected by Pete Waterman, Louis Walsh and Geri " Ginger Spice" Halliwell. The girls went on to exceed all conventions by not only beating the boy band created opposite them but going on to a consistently successful and long career(21 top ten singles and 6 platinum albums). The first created on TV band to do so! Unlike the two previous Popstars created bands Hear'say and Six, who both fizzled out within two years with basically one hit each. They showed Walsh and Simon Cowell that they can create money making bands on Popstars' successor franchise the X-Factor. And do it by bringing together young, non-professional singers who had never met before. Oddly enough they all seem to have had a WAAAY happier experience than Little Mix, One Direction and Fifth Harmony. Apparently because Simon Cowell had nothing to do with them!
to echo others I do wish you'd mentioned girls aloud and the sugababes, you said the mid 2000s were a bad time for girl groups until the pussycat dolls came across but i promise you in the UK girl groups (atomic kitten, all saints, miss-teeq too) were DOMINATING

one of the most diverse groups ive known is Stooshe, Little Mix, 5th Harmony and BOYSWORLD and Citizen Queen. The diversity of sexuality, color, race, body positivity... oh my they all deserve more
I love your videos and your content! 🧡 Ps: you might want to check "Doce", a Portuguese girl group in the 80s that was revolutionary (especially because Portugal had just become a democracy). Their all story is very interesting because they were created by men and were a man product (you know patriarchy), but they built loads of place for women to embrace their own sexuality and body autonomy (even if the media were horrible to them, calling them prostitutes and everything). They were a breakthrough in the 80s worldwide but were kind of forgotten after that, which is kinda sad.
I love little mix and fifth harmony I’ve always loved girl groups definitely because it’s a stereotypical gay man that loves to idolise 😭 that’s why I think I’m so into kpop now because in western music girl groups are lacking. Kpop is carrying
Does anyone now any new girl groups on the rise? besides boysworld of course. Preferably american but it doesn’t matter (not kpop), Pop or r&b and gen Z?
I'm rooting for Boysworld but I am still waiting for them to make THAT song. So far the only songs that come close to being hit single material are Tiptoe and Something In the Water.
my fav new girl group is the Shindellas. they are kind of an awesome mix of Destiny’s child and the Sherrells with some country influence too since they’re from nashville. and their gospel harmonies. I freaking love the Shindellas. their new album hits that stick like grits is everything.
Also note: I think that’s what happened ever since the beginning of Kpop formations. As far as I’m concerned, when the group H.O.T formed, 3/5 auditioned (one even coming from America, which idk how the heck he or the label has done that) and then were in a house together. The other two were scouted and became trainees, and then performed with other artists under the same label until they were finally allowed to debut, so they stayed under the same house. Other groups currently don’t do that. For example Oh My Girl has a few members living separately from one another. This trainee thing carried on for many years, and with many labels doing the same thing. Some of them started to predebut, which you said about that within 2016-onwards.

Undeniably the kpop training and grouping system is the best out of the best sure it does have its flaws, but we are talking about overall performancs, overall presense, the members can always fit their own aura with the other member's aura because they are trained, they are told like this. And the popularity between each member wouldnt have a big ass gap (at least for most girl groups) like what we see in 5h. So although, the kpop system os harsh, but it is one of the best
if anyone’s looking for a new girl group, real like you are on youtube, tiktok & most social medias!! they’re super talented, they won a spinoff series of xfactor and they deserve lots more recognition!
I really wanna see Boys World take off. That and I've always wanted to see a 4 piece American gg that has a black girl, white girl, latina girl and an asian girl. Call them United Front. Make sure they can blow! And move! The fantasy would be real af
I listened to soo many female artists as a young girl but my internalized misogyny was so strong that I pretended to hate all female celebs. I hated on fifth harmony, little mix, taylor swift, demi lovato, miley cyrus and just the pop girlies when I actually listened to and loved their songs.
it´s really sad to hear about history, the industry and all the negative aspects about (in this case) how women struggle against the system. But we never talk about how the struggle INCRASE when it comes for (for example) latin american artists. It's almost impossible for an artist from this side of the world to be recognize but the ones who achive that are men. Here we are talking about girl groups and the industry as a whole and non of them are latin americans and our minds would never think of that as a struggle. And yes latin america goes beyond Mexico. If you´re a feminist and you really are into the gap of privilage between men and women, then I encourage you to educate yourself in latin americans topics. The lack of privilage is without a doubt bigger. Thank you for the video, you´re very easy to understand
Can you do an evolution of boy groups? Please talk about the mistreatment in Kpop boy groups, especially with the 1st gen and 2nd gen. They really relied on their contract so much, and, except for Shinhwa and NRG (rest easy to one of their members), picked the best of their boy group members to sign the next contracts 😒 Note: The Kpop mistreatment and sexualisation of girl groups is extremely horrible. I hate those managements who did these.
Best girl group of all time imo will always be 2ne1. They literally changed everything it meant to be a girl group in kpop and we wouldn’t have Blackpink without 2ne1 laying the foundation for them. Both are amazing though. Sometimes it feels like Teddy misses working with CL specifically but I’m so glad her solo project is going well 🥺🥺
I loved fifth harmony and now I don't like them bc I'm petty and their label suspended my Twitter account 2 months back from a concert video I TOOK on my phone that I posted in 2017. 😂 Except Normani she's my girl love her.
“the evolution of ___,” the “it” factor, and “let’s talk about __ in the music industry” are the holy trinity of good series’
That's what I'm saying😂
little mix are so unbelievably talented yet underrated. of course they're super successful but they deserve more love in the US.

I would love to be in a girl band
I love your videos and your content! 🧡
Ps: you might want to check "Doce", a Portuguese girl group in the 80s that was revolutionary (especially because Portugal had just become a democracy).
Today’s my birthday and Jas posted. Life could not get any better
Happy birthday enjoy this day and eat as much delicious food as U can
@@nthuthukomdluli1052 thanks i did just that
YUPPPP been waiting for this one!!
omg you should def do this same thing for the evolution of boy bands if you haven't already! great video, love your channel
Yay!!! I've been waiting for this one!
I love little mix and fifth harmony I’ve always loved girl groups definitely because it’s a stereotypical gay man that loves to idolise 😭 that’s why I think I’m so into kpop now because in western music girl groups are lacking. Kpop is carrying
By the way the show a 'great' German Girl group named No Angels
thank u for including kpop ggs
Does anyone now any new girl groups on the rise? besides boysworld of course. Preferably american but it doesn’t matter (not kpop), Pop or r&b and gen Z?
Hey bestie! We’re not famous yet but I’m in a girl group.
citizen queen was mentioned in this video but im commenting it here, theyre amazing
I'm rooting for Boysworld but I am still waiting for them to make THAT song. So far the only songs that come close to being hit single material are Tiptoe and Something In the Water.
The fact that girlfriends didn't go VIRAL on TikTok genuinely confuses me but I get you
Something in the water is sooo good. I don’t stan but it’s stuck in my head
my fav new girl group is the Shindellas. they are kind of an awesome mix of Destiny’s child and the Sherrells with some country influence too since they’re from nashville. and their gospel harmonies. I freaking love the Shindellas. their new album hits that stick like grits is everything.
Those girl groups that I mentioned also layed the foundation for other girl groups.
I'm rooting for boys world too. they kinda got me back into western pop ngl 😭
i want to be in your girl group! actually! lol
I love girl groups and I want to see more new groups, sadly people are more interested in debuting solo than in a group 😭
Me too! You should check out Bella Dose! They’re amazing! They’re a Latin Bilingual girl group!
amazing video! :D i like how u always approach topics from different angles! love ur content
Honestly I got nothing to lose rn I'll be in your girl group 😌
In the early 2000s there were 2 big girl groups Sugababes and Girls Aloud
i love your blackpink tshirt!
18:35 Jasmine Zade music world domination??? yes please
Interesting… love this series.
can you make a video talking about fifth harmony plsss
yaaaasssss
I wish there was more vocal diversity in girl groups (alttenor not just mezzo sopranos)
I have to do a Psych presentation tomorrow, Can you do it for me pls?
absolutely where am i flying
@@jasminezade Adelaide, Australia. It's about Observation in psych and it s 3:44am. It going well thankfully. Also holy shitt u replied 😍 an icon a moment
The way you didn't mention 2ne1. 2ne1 and girls generation are the best selling kpop girl groups
Not to mention that the fans are super loyal too
what overall performance? they barely sing live and solely focus on choreography
@@NA22427 lol there are groups that sing live
@@NA22427 at least they dance better than you
@@NA22427 at their stage presence can beat any one of us with just a stand
Loved your video, but you forgot to talk about the follow girl groups. 3LW, Danity Kane Dream, Chearish SWV, and girlisious.
Also The Saturdays.
Well for me 90s omg I was obsessed with spice girls😅
BOYSWORLD BOYSWORLDDDD
I'm surprised you didn't mention Junes Diary a 5 all black female group. They been trying hard but Epic Records F-ed them over too.
if anyone’s looking for a new girl group, real like you are on youtube, tiktok & most social medias!! they’re super talented, they won a spinoff series of xfactor and they deserve lots more recognition!
I really wanna see Boys World take off. That and I've always wanted to see a 4 piece American gg that has a black girl, white girl, latina girl and an asian girl. Call them United Front. Make sure they can blow! And move! The fantasy would be real af
Bestie where is the patreon link?
Yay boyworld is mention
Does anyone know how successful Danity Kane was? Does anyone also remember Dream, and Play? Or even No Angels or Atomic Kitten.
"It's because you're lesbian" omg I can't 😭😭😭
I listened to soo many female artists as a young girl but my internalized misogyny was so strong that I pretended to hate all female celebs. I hated on fifth harmony, little mix, taylor swift, demi lovato, miley cyrus and just the pop girlies when I actually listened to and loved their songs.
Can I be on your girl group ???
put me in your girlgroup
it´s really sad to hear about history, the industry and all the negative aspects about (in this case) how women struggle against the system.
Thank you for the video, you´re very easy to understand
you didnt mention girls aloud :(
if 1D ever gets back together, i demand you to be part of their management if they get one lol
Can you do an evolution of boy groups? Please talk about the mistreatment in Kpop boy groups, especially with the 1st gen and 2nd gen.
They really relied on their contract so much, and, except for Shinhwa and NRG (rest easy to one of their members), picked the best of their boy group members to sign the next contracts 😒
Note: The Kpop mistreatment and sexualisation of girl groups is extremely horrible. I hate those managements who did these.
Best girl group of all time imo will always be 2ne1. They literally changed everything it meant to be a girl group in kpop and we wouldn’t have Blackpink without 2ne1 laying the foundation for them. Both are amazing though. Sometimes it feels like Teddy misses working with CL specifically but I’m so glad her solo project is going well 🥺🥺
I'm a simple person I see Red Velvet in the thumbnail I click 🙃
I loved fifth harmony and now I don't like them bc I'm petty and their label suspended my Twitter account 2 months back from a concert video I TOOK on my phone that I posted in 2017. 😂
Except Normani she's my girl love her.
Citizen Queen!
girl you had me at the BLACKPINK tee
“with long hair and on them it looks good because they’re girls” wow it REALLY WAS the 50s huh
