A Look Back at the Smart Approach to Story of Doom (2016)

  • This video is an in-depth analysis of the narrative elements that make up Doom (2016), a game that I’ve been obsessed with for a long time now.
    This project took a long time to finish, and a lot changed while I was working on it. I was trying out different setups while recording at times. I was also sick for a period of time during the process of putting it together. So if the quality of the video is somewhat inconsistent, that’s why. Hopefully it won't get in the way of it too badly.

      yeah, that actually pissed me of real bad, i do like those silly storys of dude turns himself into machine to live longer and keep doing his stuff while not sounding completly outside of reality. machines that are more human than humans is something underrated specially when put in a anarcho capitalism envirioment were the value of life is negative.

    I am SO happy someone finallt is making a video about this. With the dark ages announced ive veen thinking about the last two games, specifically 2016. Absolutely fell on love with the hame not just for its gameplay but like you for its world and story. It ran much deeper than people give it credit for, for me personally this video acts as rbe biggest price of validation I've ever experienced now that its finally a talking point outside of the deepest of forums.
    Keep it up man, just discovered you through this and love to see more!

    I liked Doom 2016’s tight, compact story. Fit the game well. Eternal went the medieval lore route and I didn’t like it as much. Was hoping for more of a sequel.

      The original Doom games had a better sense of humor and kitsch that didn't feel the need to take themselves seriously to the player, even if the characters themselves took the scenario seriously. When I first played them in the 90s there were quite a few funny moments where it felt like the id bros in Texas were laughing with me. (While the demons and Doomguy were unaware.)

    Glad this games story is getting some love. Doom Eternal has near perfect gameplay but I felt like its story was kind of a big step down from 2016, but that might just be because 2016 was almost Metroid Prime like in the way it told its story and I LOVED it.

      my problem with Eternal's story is, like Martin says of Doom 3 : DOOM is about a guy in the middle of big things, but Eternal is mostly about the big things.

    I never fully thought about it, but I've always felt a bit of disapointment with DOOM eternal's story after seeing the ending of 2016's.
    They also tried too hard to make cool shit and they got to the universe-level wars too fast, forgetting DOOM is mainly about what Doomguy is up to.

    • @leggingsoflove2814
      @leggingsoflove2814  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I hadn't made this connection before, but as I was reading your comment I thought about Hugo Martin in the documentary saying that Doom should be about the Slayer and not about the big things around him. And yet, where Doom 2016 feels very grounded on the Slayer, Doom Eternal, as you say, tries to be really cool and big.

    Eternal's story was so over board, I just shut down my brain and enjoyed the gameplay. Makes me sad when I think of it in hindsight, 2016 layed a solid foundation for the sequel but Eternal just went on crack with it

    I actually enjoy the fact the the doomslayer lost at the end of the story.
    Narratively, the only reason why the slayer lost to hayden at the end of the game is because of the Vega Core mission. because the Slayer did not morally grow, did not learn from his fool's journey and remained single-minded in (nearly) killing vega cold bloodedly, he dropped himself down to Samuel's level, where Samuel beat him with experience.
    That interpretation leave's 2016's narrative fully complete as a "failed hero's journey" subversive story.

    been halfway through. overall good - but i would say you are repeating yourself a bit too much - so once the point is done, you can move on to the next item. You can underline main points by showing a tiny list on the screen if you really want. Whoever is watching this is doing so because they have consumed most DOOM content and scraping the bottom of the barrel, so are "in tune". Curious if in the last hour you touch on the lore as well. Also i was hoping for a more refined analysis on the actual mechanism with examples from literature, films or theatre. Maybe it is later on. Just wanted to leave my thought as i am watching - before i forget. Keep up the good work overall.

    I don't think the plot of 2016 was anything special per se but more so the campaign's pacing and consistency, you were there as the Doom slayer every step of the way on a journey with each level seamlessly flowing into the next. Eternal was an improvement in regards to gameplay imo but I didn't dig the structure of having the hub world and jumping between different planets as it kinda took away from being immersed in the world and narrative. Now you could argue that isn't very important for a Doom game but I appreciate the balance 2016 struck in that regard.

    I like the idea of Doom delivering it's story in the environment without getting in the players way while saying more than if they forcefully grabbed your attention. But I find it funny that in a video about how subtle and non intrusive the story telling of doom is, you cut your essay half way to go on an anti capitalism tangent that is less to do with the game and more your take on the idea. Because UAC didn't talk Wages, work culture, Insurance, poverty racism, etc.
    To me the capitalism takes leaves behind the nuances of human nature the Devs decided to have fun with. Like the UAC being a military and Science corporation most likely staffed by the smartest people on earth still became a backwards hell cult. I think this Idea itself is good enough to work in any ideology as a criticism of large groups that pave a path to hell with good intentions. With this being literal with the UAC.

    I'm 45 mins in but this is very interesting! The very real socio-political themes you bring out in contrast with you reminding us that the devs don't actually care about them makes me worry that the doom 2016 story might've been a fluke. It's not the first time I've seen it happen, just look at subnautica and compare it to it's sequel.

    Much use of things like "again", "however, "to put it simple" or "in other words", are a good indicator for a script getting bloated. It's telling u to saying little or the same over n over, so u should trim it down. I was out after two chapters cuz u basicly made 2 points in them - both of these in both of'em.
    It's like i can feel myself aging in the time i listen.

    I found doom's narrative really interesting... But I only engaged it with through a lore video essay that apparently went through the codex entries... Pretty disappointing it's all hidden is an in game novella. But I guess it's doom, the gameplay was fun as hell.

      @leggingsoflove2814  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Its probably not a good idea to tear (heh) into Capitalism in the way it was shown the video, the Teams hyperbolic and satirical take on Corporate going ons in 2016 sounds like it was made in good spirit, the same way it was also shown in Eternal, where its clear they enjoy irreverent humor there as well...
    Worst case scenario is that you're gonna be seen as implicating an Anti capitalist message in this video, the Narrative breakdown is excellent, but it would've helped to be more self aware of what you're saying about bringing IRL topics into a Game as Absurd as Doom
