2019 Ford Ranger v 2020 Jeep Gladiator | A Quick Look

  • I got my hands on America's two newest mid-size trucks recently which means it's time to talk about which one is my favorite and which one is right for you! Both come in off-road models but one is certainly more tuned for on-road duty than the other. Is that good or bad? That depends on where you're standing...

The button you referred to as "hill descent control" in both vehicles is called "Trail Control" in the Ranger, and is basically a form of low speed cruise control for travelling off road, where you can set any speed up to around 20 mph, and it will maintain that speed without you touching the brakes. I believe the Jeep has a similar system.

Seems to me the Gladiator is rich in unique design features that make it more of a "lifestyle vehicle" and off-road prowess, while the Ranger is a rather conventional vehicle with more of an on-road focus. If it weren't for my many complaints with the Ford ownership experience (Ford credit, dealer service and warranties, and overall reliability), the Ranger would be my pick. I like how it's more of an "Escape pickup", because I always enjoy driving Escapes as SUVs go.

The FX4 shocks definitely feel floaty.. equipped with a spacer level it firms it up, eliminates some of that body roll. My Ranger XLT FX4 came equipped with the Ford Performance “tuned” Fox 2.0 coil over level kit, riding on 18” wheels w/Nitto AT 33’s and it drives/handles great...

European Rangers are rated to carry a metric ton and a bit. So the rear springs are stiffer. They are also rated to tow 3.5 tons [2200lbs to the ton]. The exception is the coil sprung Raptor which can carry half a ton and tow two.
No petrol engines here. Even the Raptor has a 2 litre twin turbo diesel.

I'm a Jeep Wrangler guy but when it was time to 'upgrade' I did a butt-ton of research and number crunching. Then I test drove 'similarly' configured trucks: Tacoma TRD, Gladiator Rubi and Ranger FX4. I didn't come close to fitting comfortably in the Taco which was sad because that's what I wanted. Having owned 3 Jeeps and 4 Ford Trucks in the past...I ended up giving the edge to the Ranger just for reliability. Stop laughing! I had great luck with Ford Pickups. :-D However my Wranglers had non-stop quality control issues. The Gladiator only wins off-road (and surprisingly not by much) and on 'cool-factor'. The Ranger is boring straight off the lot but it won't stay that way. Ultimately the Gladiator and Ranger were close to neck-and-neck but the REAL pricetags (MSRP numbers are a joke, please stop quoting them). Similarly outfitted, the Ranger was 20k cheaper than the Gladiator. $39k vrs $61k. Also, you mentioned no front locker available for the Ford Ranger...LOL. Uh, it doesn't have a solid front axle like the Gladiator, so yeah, traction control handles that for you. ;-) Other than that, very detailed video. I know it takes a lot of time to put these together so Kudos To You! Good job.

Man both these look like full size trucks. Kinda funny that you can get a 1/2 ton in a version that is smaller in many dimensions versus these offerings.

Interestingly, the same people saying the Gladiator is too expensive see no issue with an $85-90k Ford Raptor. Oh and Jeep will sell every Gladiator it builds with ease, and let's not forget about the insane resale values.

  • @ModernDIYProjects

The Ford Ranger will give you a more comfortable interior and a better on street driving experience than the Jeep. Jeep is rather cramped and spartan inside, and tends to wander a lot on the road. Of course if you are a Jeep person, then none of that will matter to you.

If forced, between the two I'd have the Ranger. The Gladiator is just too disfigured and hideous for me to even consider (not to mention the stupid high price and FCA's "reliability"). I don't like the Ranger, but it's by far the better choice here.

    • @kc5077

Plastic bumpers covers have metal reinforcement bars behind them so they don’t change pedestrian safety. Oddly larger flatter fronts are better for pedestrians than small sharp front ends, as they can distribute the energy over a wider surface. Which is why many European cars now have gotten rid of low tapered front ends.
