    This is literally the best advice I've ever heard! All my design career I've been trying to be good at everything, I have a fine art education, a designer's diploma, I've learned 3d, photo-manipulations, tried a bit of motion, typography and so on. However, I was never happy with the result and blamed myself for not being perfect in all these fields. Only now do I realise that it's impossible to be good at everything at the same time. And that's probably why I always struggle with cheap commissions or no work at all, while having a decade of experience in graphic design..
    thank you for making such a great content!

      This is so awesome to hear. (not the cheap commissions and frustration part but the rest of it haha) I totally relate. I was so frustrated in the working world because being a generalist worked in school vary well but I would run into your same issue of cheap commissions. Glad to see you were inspired and I hope I can continue to make content that helps you improve your design skills and earn commissions that reflect that.

      @@ExtraCreditDesignClub "Works well in school"- is a super important point. I feel so too, that while in school you feel the urge to master all different fields, and except for some extremely talented people this usually leads to disappointment of your own work as it cant live up to the high standards you set yourself.

    This is good advice for getting a job, BUT it can also become mentally draining to put yourself in such a specific category as an artist. If you're adjusting everything about yourself and your creative expression to fit into a niche, it can make you feel trapped after a while. I've felt like this after specializing in illustration books - I felt like I'm some sort of factory worker that only knows one thing and isn't meant to do anything else and it burnt me out artistically

    • @ExtraCreditDesignClub
      @ExtraCreditDesignClub  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      I relate this as well. at first I spent maybe 20% of my time learning type until it made me money then I was 80% for a few years while I still did general design, 3D, Video etc. now I am doing type about 60% of my time and working on TH-cam with the other 40%
      for me the 80% specialization 20% following my creative thread wherever it leads has been a good mix. life ebbs and flows and you always want to be growing your skillset. but being too general and not specifically focusing on mastery I have found has hurt me financially, I was much happy to be a generalist until I got a family now I am more willing to narrow my focus to make money.
      hope this helped 80% specialty 20% wonderer.

    Okay, this earned a subscribe from me. Now the thought...
    You kind of touched on this during the Be Cautious section, but didn't touch on what I was thinking about... AI.
    Every 6 months or so, AI generators are becoming more powerful. Who's to say font design, or even design in general, won't be obsolete in a year or two?
    Maybe a good follow up video would be to address what AI could do and what paths will require the human touch going forward.

    • @ExtraCreditDesignClub
      @ExtraCreditDesignClub  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I personally Just See AI as another tool in the tool belt. I believe that in a worst case scenario AI does to Design what the camera did to painting. I could be wrong. Just in case I like to spend 80% of my time doing what makes me money (font design) and 20% of my time growing my skills and knowledge in other areas that interest me. If I was worried about AI taking my job as a designer I would spend 20% of my time working on a craft that is more rooted in the material world. cutting hair, making furniture, culinary arts. Something like that.
      Addressing why I feel how I feel about AI. I dove deep into image generators for a few months and love using them but it is pretty clear the types of limitations they have. At the end of the day AI can only iterate and take Ques from work that already exists. People Value Original Though More that you might expect, especially at the top end of the market. Also for AI to become nuanced enough to realistically replace designers the prompting mechanisms will need to be equally nuanced and still require someone to operate them. Prompting will become a skill just like photoshopping is a skill.
      as an example in order to prompt an AI to make a font and refine its iterations one will need to know the terminology of font design. Most business owners don't want to take time to learn that and will hire a font designer to operate the AI that will make
      Great Question Thanks for Reaching out. Like I said I could be wrong about AI and there is value doing what you need to do for your peace of mind.

  • @JonGarcia

    A creative director and friend of mine would describe the ideas as "grow like a weed" - learn to be really strong in one area that no one else is as strong as you where you're at, but make sure you know how to be useful in associated skill sets. This will make you invaluable to employers and clients. And the associated skills sets may not be in design, but general business skills like project management, organization, resourcing, etc. Identify what is lacking where you're at and see if you're capable of becoming "the" go-to person for it.
    For me, what has made me invaluable everywhere I've been is that I know how to clean up presentations quickly and make complicated diagrams simple and editable in presentation software (PPTs, Slides, Keynote, etc.). I'm not talking about making beautiful and elaborate templates, I'm talking about fixing them after people immediately break those templates to fit whatever blocks of misaligned text they add to them. Presentation decks are not something most designers like to do because they're not considered "portfolio worthy." But I would argue that they are the most prolific amount of design work you can do that will almost always be truly necessary.

    Often times, I’ve heard other TH-camrs encourage that designers should “sell” or “start” with brand strategy? What are your thoughts on this? Especially when it comes to specialization in a design field, should you expect a company to already have strategy done or work with what they have?

    I've always liked the idea of becoming an expert in a specific niche. It allows you the luxury of working with clients who understand design and are willing to pay well. As someone new to the graphic design field, learning on my own, I'm currently focused on logo and visual identity design. While this is already somewhat specific, it isn't narrow enough, considering that an identity involves logos, colors, typography, photography, illustration, and applications like posters and business cards. Consequently, I've decided to refine my focus further. I aim to create visual identities for purpose-led small businesses and good businesses that deserve to be seen with a suitable identity but may not afford to work with design studios. I would really appreciate it if you have advice on how to niche more or some general advice that you might have about the visual identity niche? thaank you

    • @ExtraCreditDesignClub
      @ExtraCreditDesignClub  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I would read some books about branding so you can understand it from the perspective of your clients. "the brand gap" and "Primal Branding" and "purple cow" are great books to understand branding at its core. if you can understand branding from the perspective of not just a a graphic designer your work will be better. then if you cannot get clients just make passion projects similar to the type of clients you want work with. post those projects on behance often and consistently. post not just your work but write about what you did and your process until you are confident in your skillset. that would be my first advice.

    I really related to the last bits of this video where you talked about the worries of other doors closing once you choose a specific lane. But the idea of other doors opening up in that same specific lane you chose is really good to think about.
    I , personally, am more into 3D environment art than graphic designing. But due to the high demands in specs if I pursue 3D right now, I wouldn't be able to. And so I’m venturing into graphic design for now until I can afford a better setup to do 3D environment. (I’m a student)
    Do you think this is wise? Or perhaps there is a better way to do this. I feel like it’s practical, but it’s also too different.

      School is a great time to explore all kinds of various interests. I would say take the time in school to experiment, try all kinds of things and see what you like. then once you finish school and are having to compete for jobs is a good time to specialize.
      I think saving up and investing in your own setup and education is always worth it. live as cheap as you can through your 20s and invest in your education and gear then in your 30s you will be much better off than most

    • @ExtraCreditDesignClub
      @ExtraCreditDesignClub  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      that can be tricky. you gotta go where the money is. there are industries that have lots of money. sports industries, tech startups, finance. there are also certain type of design that pay more like motion graphics and 3D work or custom Typefaces.
      there really is not one answer I can give besides think like a business person and go where the opportunity is industry wise and skillset wise.
      focus on one think maybe web design for example then once you have spent some time in that world you will be able to see if there is an opportunity to focus more narrowly like web design for photographers. or if just web design works then keep riding that scooter.

Motion is always a good bet. there is a lot of demand for motion designers. make a lot of work and post it online everywhere you can. socials, behance, Pinterest.i have seen a lot of designers doing passion projects for artists they love and they often get the attention of those artists. start making stuff for smaller artists that would respond to your work and see what happens.

    The one and only thing Specialization scare me, on any subject not only design, is that some time in the future, you will be "obsolote" "old" "the subject is no more famous" "you are getting behind in the trends" etc etc, this can happen in the span of 5 to 10 years, and once you are overspecialized in one subject, how do you transition onto another to get paid the same amount as before.
    I've seen a lot of this on YT, channels that 5 years ago were on their prime, now are completely unnoticed, averaging 5% of the subscription views, or worse, deleted.

    • @ExtraCreditDesignClub
      @ExtraCreditDesignClub  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I get this, and had not considered this as a concern for the video. I am seeing this happen in the type world. everyone is freaking out that AI will take over the job they worked year to secure though skill and what will they do now?
      I encourage you to FIRST specialize THEN diversify. once you successfully purposefully identify a market need masker the skills it tales to fill that need those are skills that you can take with you anywhere. It's kinda like how learning a second language is difficult but learning a third is much easier and a fourth even easier. Once you succeed in one field you know what it takes to succeed. you are tapped into the market and will be able to see the writing on the wall when it is time to exit and do something new far before any generalist does. It is true that You may need to start over, but that will be less of a big deal because you have more of a financial safety net and a skillset on how to analyze a market, and master the skills needed to succeed.
      (this is part of the reason I am dong TH-cam, Diversification in case type designers become irrelevant,)

      I think school is a great place to try everything. it is a mine when the pressure of not working for a client and having a job fail is not there. try everything you possible can in school and you will be more likely to find what you love and are happy to specialize in. also blender is an amazing tool that is what I use for 3D. and 3D work for me has paid a lot better than regular graphic design making logos and such.

      @@ExtraCreditDesignClub interfaces and the way to humans communicate with products/services will completely change in the next 5 years. AI is already here and changing everything. The more skills and knoledge you have to control the robot the better, and let it do the "hard tasks" which is a lot of what people especialize nowadays.
      Plus, if you have experience in just one market or niche you have a very limited number of different imputs, and our brain innovate and generates new ideas by doing connections, and the most diverse set of data it has to do this connections, the better.
      In resume: productivity is dead, long live creativity.
