First gen was available as a sedan, hatchback, or wagon. The hatchback and the sedan just look kinda similar, u can tell which is which because the sedan doesn’t have a rear window wiper and the trunk area is slightly longer
The First generation Mazda 6 was a beautiful car, still is, I especially like the wagons they are just very classy and well proportioned. My parents had a Mazda 6 wagon in the yellow color and it was really stunning. My significant other bought a 2009 Ford fusion 2.3 L, which I wish was a Mazda 6 every day even if it had the 2.3. The 2.3 L is extremely reliable, and the 3 L is very reliable as well but I have heard horror stories from several friends….the six speed transmission is not as reliable as the five speed that comes in the 2.3 L autos that is. The 3 L is very closely related to the Jaguar 3.0 that was in the X type and the S type which was extremely reliable, mine was purring at 170,000 miles when it was totaled😓
The 2.3L is extremely reliable IF you change the oil every 5k miles. They also start using oil at some point north of 120k miles and, as long as you check it once a month and top it off, you're good. I've been adding a quart to my 2006 Mazda3 2.3L every 1500-1800 miles for years now and it runs like a champ.
I have a 2006 Mazda Mazda6 3.0L with 164000 and it’s been mostly reliable. Also my transmission is good, no problems because I have the aisin transmission. Tbh most transmission problems stems from too much power or not being taken care of.
@@jaylonallen8423 That is completely true, the FNR5 transmission that we have in our 2009 Ford fusion 2.3 L is very reliable, but we have kept up with the transmission fluid changes… I rarely see a clean first generation Ford fusion, they are all beat to hell and driven by people who don’t maintain their cars…
I have a 2007 mazda 6 5 speed manual that I bought brand new and I'm still enjoying it! My car still looks brand new and turns heads. I absolutely love this car! The gas mileage is great as well 425 miles per tank for a 15 year old car🤪
Wow, sounds like you take good care of your car. Regular maintenance and not being so hard on a car really does make a difference. Hope your ride keeps going for a long time 👍
My friends first car was this gen Mazda6. It was the hatchback. I still don't understand why all mid size sedans don't use liftback stuff. Nearly all new sedan have a sloping rood and no trunk table. I can't imagine it hurting the modern designs at all. Maybe you could add reclining rear seats? Anyway his motor blew up not to long after he got it under 100k miles. It's just sitting in his yard. I remember being impressed by how good the interior was. It looked different than this one a little but. Nostly the lower center and controls. I was amazed how modern it looked despite no screen.
2000s Mazda designs are actually considered quite pretty and athletic, especially for the time. The first Mazda3s sold because they were a combo of the winning Focus platform and fresh, sporty styling inside and out. It was a standout back then and these Mazdas still look pretty now, the non-rusted ones that is
I had one of these fully loaded with the hatch. Absolute favorite car i ever owned. Unfortunately it rusted pretty bad and needed a complete suspension overhaul. The engine started running rough and i got rid of it at 210k. Definately not the best built car but the leather seats were phenomonal, enough power with the V6, and really fun to drive.
I’ve got a 2006 Sedan, V6 with a 5spd manual. Love that car! Fun to drive and very reliable! Got 221k miles on it and it take it anywhere! Matter of fact I did a road trip from Atlanta to Vegas in it 3yrs ago. Car was flawless! I’d like a review on it, but since you just did this one, I guess there won’t really be a need, huh?
I have 05 mazda 6 s wagon in blue. The manual transmission is indeed a mazda product. In fact the 5 speed mazda designed manual Trans was used by ford in their 5 speed manual vehicles from the the 90s up to idk when.
Some are! There was a sedan as well. VERY similar appearance. The Liftback had a rear wiper and ever so slightly different geometry. SUUUPER subtle though!
I loved the 1st gen MZ6 and they still look great to me! I drove a 2008 MZ6 i Sport (base model, 2.3L/5AT) for over a month back in 2008. The engine in my 2006 MZ3 was being replaced under warranty and I had the MZ6 as a loaner. It was a great car and I really didn't want to give it back! Even with the 2.3L and 5AT, it was still a fun car to drive. The 4-door Sedan was available 2003-2008, 5-door Hatchback 2004-2008 and Sport Wagon 2004-2007. I don't have the official numbers to back me up, but the 4-door Sedan outsold the 5-door Hatchback by roughly 5:1. The Sport Wagon was only around 5% of total sales.
You probably don't get a lot of requests to do minivans, but I think it be cool if you did some 90s minivans the ones that so many of us grew up in, like a 2nd or 3rd gen caravan. Love the channel bud.
Have a 2008 Mazda 6 2.3l 5 spd, wish I got the V6 but the one I was looking at sold before I could get to it. Absolutely love the design of the car, I think it still holds up today
Some small corrections. It produces 220hp not 212 and it has only engine block from ford, heads are mazda, and they are much more aggressive then ones from Fusion or other US market car with the same block that produces around 200 hp. This is able to pull 0-60 in 6.5-7 seconds with manual trans., and it was a budget sedan in 2004. Suspension is way more complicated (multi-link front and rear like premium honda,audi,bmw...) than two next generations GH and GJ got (mcpherson). Mazdaspeed 6 or MPS was based on US market 6S (which is considered pre-facelift MPS/mazdaspeed) sharing the suspension and some other things.
I loved how on the triptronic "auto manual" shifter has the gear changes in the CORRECT orientation. Up is down shift and pulling back is up shift . I wonder if Mazda still does this on their newer cars
We had a 2006 Mazda 6 and i really enjoyed the one option you might not have found. Hold the unlock button down and all the windows open automatically. Just the opposite lock well close all the windows
Had a 2006 sport wagon, $20k out of the door, as nobody was buying it. I unfortunately totaled it in 2018 with 275k miles on it. A fantastic car. Really miss it.
My son has a base 3 series, with 300k on the clock, it runs like a brand new car, the paint is flawless, the interior is durable, the ride is quite and the car is fun to drive and dead reliable, it was the best $3000 dollars we ever spent!
Love my 05 6s, 3.0 v6 with the 6 speed automatic. Just barely under 219k and still kicking. Been the most reliable car we’ve had. Hopeful to keep my car on the road as long as possible!
My mom bought a 1st Gen Mazda6 (2004) brand new in August of 2004. For a midsize family sedan, it was such an appealing car. Reliability in ours was…unfortunate, even with regular maintenance. Nevertheless, it lasted for about 11 years before biting the dust at 238,000 miles.
I am also a Mazda fan and owned 2 first generation Mazda 6's. The first was e 2003 V6 6s sedan that was stolen and totaled and the next was it's replacement an 07 6i 4 cylinder 5-door that I had for 12 years and loved and traded it for a 2019 CX-5 Signature. They were great cars and built in Flat Rock, MI. Very reliable and I loved the utility of the hatchback. Mazda is my favorite brand.
I currently own and maintain a 2005, 2008, and 2014 Mazda 6, AND a 2010 Mazda 3. SO I do know quite a bit about these cars and I love them. My 2008 Mazda looks exactly like that (same color) and has the same options except I have the 4 banger 5 speed auto sedan. If you ever see a Mazda 6 of that Generation with a rear wiper then you know it is a hatchback. All my cars are pretty high mileage and i have done everything to maintain them myself in my garage. I've never had to do anything major. I've done alternators, motor mounts, struts, cv axles, intake gaskets, thermostat, plugs, wires, belts. Good luck working on any Mazda 6 with the v6 motor yourself. The clearances are insane. These cars were not engineered for those engines. They are totally shoehorned in there and not designed to be worked on. Trust me. Almost impossible. I've done brakes so many times on all my cars I can't count. These cars do seem to me to have a real weakness with the braking systems. I've had calipers fail and rotors warp with almost regularity. I agree about some of the cheapness aspects of the cars. I could go on and on about little things. My 2005 has squeaky suspension, for instance. But I maintain these cars and even though they have their quirks and all that they just keep on runnin. I really love Mazdas and especially the 6. Sorry to see them go.
Hey man! I have an 08 3hatch with the 2.3 ad 5spd, 189k. I'm about to look at/possibly trade for an 06 6wagon with the v6 amd 5spd 165k. I'm pretty tall (6'6) and have 2 growing sons, that's my main reason for the trade. Any suggestions or what to look for when goin to check the 6 wagon out?
@@crryder44 Well, I think if you can find a 5 speed manual that'd be wise with higher miles. Take a look at the suspension and steering pieces, front and back, just like any car. I just replaced the ball joints/control arms, and tie rod/ends on one of my cars, the Mazda 3, that has over 200,000 miles on it. The fluids can help tell a cars story. Transmission, brake, power steering, oil. Look inside the valve cover under the oil cap for any sign of sludge. And have a look at the spark plugs. Good luck to ya
I own an '04 sport wagon with the 5-speed "sequential auto" transmission and the 3L V6, she's stylin'. Less than 200k on her too! I've never seen another sport wagon like mine out in the wild.
I had a 2006 Mazda 6 sedan with the V-6 and Sports Package (4 wheel disk brakes, spoiler, sports wheels), premium HVAC but the cloth seats. Silver exterior/black-gray mix interior. I had it for 10 years, 91,000 miles. Had to replace the water pump, HVAC fan motor and 1 spark plug coil. Regularly changed the oil. To me it had a no-frills but still nice look to them. Tight build quality, nice balance of size and weight. Excellent handling. Likely my favorite car of over a dozen I have owned in my life (age 67). After a 2014 Ford Focus I traded in this Mazda 6 in 2016, that while the Focus was good in many ways, the DCT transmission issues made me get rid of it. I bought last September a 2021 Mazda CX-30 Select and it was from the same dealer I got the Mazda 6 from. Like it a lot but wish it had more 'greenhouse' window height. About the only CUV with a real automatic transmission (and can shift manually like with the 6) and a good sized engine (2.5L) so no turbo issues. Likely the good experience with the 6 led me to the CX-30.
I have a 2006 4cyl as an everyday car and I love it. Wish I could use the navigation system pop up screen though. Just for multimedia purposes 😅 don't want to pay an arm and leg to replace it though
I have a 2005 mazda 6 wagon I brought from a junkyard in Georgia 2 years ago. It was heading on the way to the crusher. I still have it, almost rolling over 240k
Man I love your videos. Short and sweet. To the point. Honestly you have inspired me to start my own car review videos. I just need to find a decent video editing software. Thanks so much for your videos
I had a Mazda 6s Sport V6- it was such a great car- it had BMW like handling and performance without the cost. I would have kept it longer, but Mazda didn't address a manufacturing defect (at Ford's plant) which caused the rear wheel arches to rust out right at year 4-5 of the car, depending on how much salt was used in the area. If you found the rust while the car was still in warranty, they would give you $300 to have a body shop stop and fix the rust. Problem was nobody noticed it until it was too late, and the rust just ate the wheel arch. This is the prominent reason why none of these are in service anymore.
that one's the "hatch", there's the actual Sedan and then the Wagon, the rear seats are definitely much roomier in the wagon and the 5MT makes it feel much more powerful.
I bought a 2008 hatch v6 with the hot red paint in April last year and it’s been the most balanced fun and reliable car I’ve driven. I’ve done some mods but kinda salted about how difficult it is to get power out of the v6 and tuning it.
The top of the line model isn't the mazdaspeed 6, it's the GTA, 136 HP direct injected, intercooled turbodiesel wagon with a manual transmission. That motor, when cared for properly, is indestructible.
i didnt know my 2004 was a hatchback until i went to buy it. i can confim that its large enough to sleep in as well. i just wish the trunk had a manual release and wasnt entirely electronically opened
I knew. You can tell the sedans from hatches by the rear doors and of course the rear wiper which the sedans don’t have. It came in wagon, hatch and sedan for 1st Gen.
I've considered the 1st gen mazda 6 as a first car along with a few others, the mazda 6 especially the v6 seems to be a good balance between practical as its a sedan, wagon, or hatchback, do decent on gas, I heard these are fun to drive, are affordable, and seems to hold up decently in an accident, and if I wanted to do some modification there's some aftermarket available. I might get one
I did not know Until researching it last year sometime but this generation Mazda 6 was actually available with a smart key and touch button start both on the grand touring and the Mazdaspeed 6👌
Wow. Thanks. Man, you're awesome. ".. Quality increase after 2015." Bro, you're awesome. I did not know Ford and Mazda were still in their off/on relationship that far.
Might be a dumb question but is it possible to swap this engine into my 08 Mazda 3 sedan? And is it a good idea to do so? 200 hp just sounds so much better than the 130ish 😅
Now the Ford no longer owns part of Mazda, Mazda's are more reliable. Unfortunately, they don't sell as well as Toyota & Honda. i used to have a Mazda dealer, but it left and now it's only a Hyundai dealer
Some were liftbacks some were sedans Some were wagons Some were super fast awd sport sedans. 1st generation is best generation. (Waiting for a protege video lol )
And in my last comment I referenced the Jaguar X type, please review one of those, if you can get a manual transmission that would be great but rare…. The X type just gets so much hate but it’s actually a great car👌
@@ShootingCars Nice I had one of those too but it was a 2007 with the 4.2, but I assume you will be reviewing perhaps a 2011/2012 with the 5.0? Never had one of those but I did have the 2012 XF 5.0, and it is a amazing engine… Regardless of which generation XJ I’ll be eagerly awaiting👌💯
The body style is worlds better looking then whatever ford did in 2009. They threw it away by that is and for the better because mazda pretty much top dog at this point.
Two of my friends had mazdaspeed 6 and a 6 wagon with the 5 speed at the same time. Sadly those cars are likely long gone. Both totaled some years ago.
I had a 04 Mazda 6 it was a great and fun car but what killed it for me was that it kept leaking oil all the time and I had it fixed so many times I just decided to sell it because of that reason but other then that it was pretty cool.
they come in sedan and hatchback in Australia. although i own the sedan i have no idea why you would have chosen the sedan over the hatch when given the choice
Ford maybe sold off their share of Mazda, but is still using Mazda L-series engine blocks in some of their Ecoboost powerplants. Late model Mazdas drive like Fords. Neither of which are problematic to me. For a '07, the car looks great. Doors and paint are the same as my '06 Fusion.
In Australia our first gen Mazda 6 are a little different I personally have a 2007 sports model and I have digital aircon controls rather then the manual switches, as for the other models here all of the models with powered seats come standard with memory and the trim is slightly different and better quality
Funny thing I have a rare first edition mazda 6 but was made in Japan, which is a total pain as its impossible to get parts .when it's beside another one there are lots of differences
7:12. I came here specifically to see how much space is under the hatch.😂😂 So yes I knew that. I don't like the sedan models and the hatch model brings back memories of my old hatchback s13 240sx❤
Gen 1 Mazda 6 was handsome the fact they offered 3 body styles including a 5 door hatch and a wagon was awesome. Too bad Mazda didn't continue to offer those bodystyles on the 2nd Gen. The build quality was meh.....Ford's influence definitely could be seen with their lack of quality and durability. Rust was starting to form on the strut towers in the front. I noticed it when i was changing my brake pads. The Duratec 30 in mine blew up at 80K miles despite changing the oil religiously with full synthetic oil. The 6 speed A/T started to fail after I replaced the engine. Thankfully it got rear ended by F-150 and was put outta its misery. I wish I bought a TSX instead of the Mazda.
Had one for my first car, 2007 top spec luxury sport hatch (Aus). Had many compliments on the car and drives great and sharp. Managed to fit a TV cabinet inside the car once. Only had to replace engine mount and O2 sensor throughout 7 years of ownership.
I work in Mazda parts, and would NOT recommend this generation if you want to keep it long term, ESP the liftbacks. Since they were a blend of mazda & ford parts, A LOT of the parts are retired and going to be very hard to find.
Manual air con and a v6, so weird! We kept a 2.0 with a 4 speed auto for many years until it died, since 2004. Mine also had an ashtray/hidden cargo where yours is open, and the cup holders closed if desired (other market though, ours was Japanese). Not a brilliant car. Very bad soundproofing, horrible accessory quality (Ford?) and they all rust (I live in the desert btw). Also prone to recurring mechanical issues, but never anything crucial. Drove nice, nothing special. Very pretty though, especially when it was brand new and without those sport kit add-ons!
First gen was available as a sedan, hatchback, or wagon. The hatchback and the sedan just look kinda similar, u can tell which is which because the sedan doesn’t have a rear window wiper and the trunk area is slightly longer
came here to say this, thanks. 👍🏻
Yea this hatchback is nice
And a wagon in all three versions for the rest of the world.

@@rrmorris67 cool man thanks I appreciate it
I own an '04 sport wagon with the 5-speed "sequential auto" transmission and the 3L V6, she's stylin'.
I still have it, almost rolling over 240k
welp guess I'll be buying a mazda6, I found an orange one and really wanna buy it, and most importantly its a car I can afford lol
Man I love your videos. Short and sweet. To the point. Honestly you have inspired me to start my own car review videos. I just need to find a decent video editing software. Thanks so much for your videos
My first car was a 2007 mazda6i sport. I loved that car so much, heartbroken for two weeks when it got totaled last month
Ah that's what I'm driving. I love it. Hope your new car brings you joy.
I loved my brand new 2007 Mazda6 5 speed hatch in this same color! (My 4th Mazda out of 6, currently in a 19’ CX-5 GT).
My 04 sedan with the 3.0v6 with the 5speed auto.
It has 362k now. Still runs amazing as a DD.
that one's the "hatch", there's the actual Sedan and then the Wagon, the rear seats are definitely much roomier in the wagon and the 5MT makes it feel much more powerful.
What a shocker. Zac loves the Mazda. Lol
I always liked that first gen Mazda 6. Never drove one though, looks like a nice, sporty sedan/hatchback for the era.
i didnt know my 2004 was a hatchback until i went to buy it. i can confim that its large enough to sleep in as well. i just wish the trunk had a manual release and wasnt entirely electronically opened
I bought an 05 mazda 6 2.3l 4 speed automatic with 250,000 and still runs great
I knew. You can tell the sedans from hatches by the rear doors and of course the rear wiper which the sedans don’t have. It came in wagon, hatch and sedan for 1st Gen.
Wow I had no idea this gen 6 was a hatchback either. Exterior isn't really my jam but it's still kinda cool
Nice looking car!
The Mazda 6 always existed, it was just called 626 before this model came out.
Just like the Mazda 3, called 323 before 2003.
I hope my 2017 Mazda6 looks this good in 10 years!
I am thinking off buying one of these. Cool cars.
I currently own a 05 mazda 6s it's one amazing car to own
I have a 2007 Mazda6 and it has a misfire in the #4 cylinder and l can't seem to figure out what is the issue.
I did not know Until researching it last year sometime but this generation Mazda 6 was actually available with a smart key and touch button start both on the grand touring and the Mazdaspeed 6👌
What type of gas you should put in this car and what type of oil?
This was my first car and I absolutely loved it, it is so much fun and amazing overall, poor maintenance has mine sitting outside ):
Wow. Thanks. Man, you're awesome. ".. Quality increase after 2015." Bro, you're awesome. I did not know Ford and Mazda were still in their off/on relationship that far.
The CX7 was a Ford product too, frought with issues, was subsequently scrapped
LIFT HATCHBACKS ARE THE BEST!
Might be a dumb question but is it possible to swap this engine into my 08 Mazda 3 sedan? And is it a good idea to do so? 200 hp just sounds so much better than the 130ish 😅
They came in both hatch and sedan- If it’s got a wiper, it’s a hatch, if it doesn’t have a wiper, it’ll be a sedan.
Now the Ford no longer owns part of Mazda, Mazda's are more reliable. Unfortunately, they don't sell as well as Toyota & Honda. i used to have a Mazda dealer, but it left and now it's only a Hyundai dealer
Fun fact, the v6 also had a manual option in both sedan and wagon form. Talk about unicorns
4:06 ahh yes. the dashboard mounted contraband compartment
Some were liftbacks some were sedans Some were wagons
Some were super fast awd sport sedans. 1st generation is best generation. (Waiting for a protege video lol )
greeat video just got one of these bad boys as one of my first car
And in my last comment I referenced the Jaguar X type, please review one of those, if you can get a manual transmission that would be great but rare…. The X type just gets so much hate but it’s actually a great car👌
XJL review is coming next week!
Do you know why mazda got rid of the 26 in 626? Its just a next gen 626
The body style is worlds better looking then whatever ford did in 2009. They threw it away by that is and for the better because mazda pretty much top dog at this point.
They also have the mazda speed 6 witch is a turbo i4 awd
The rear wiper was the give away.. they are not all hatches. I have only seen one hatch 6 in the wild.
Wasn't the '05 Mazda 6 the first midsize available with an 6spd auto..
I saw napleton and was like, wait a minute, I know where that is XD
Do you have video of your car collection all the cars that you own
Funny thing I have a rare first edition mazda 6 but was made in Japan, which is a total pain as its impossible to get parts .when it's beside another one there are lots of differences
I just purchased an 07 mazda 6 with a 5spd and it is not a hatch. 4 doors and an actual trunk.
7:12. I came here specifically to see how much space is under the hatch.😂😂
So yes I knew that. I don't like the sedan models and the hatch model brings back memories of my old hatchback s13 240sx❤
Careful with the compartment on dash lol, break super easy on this gen.
Who are you telling u my dream car is a 2006 Mazda 6v6 and I found one I like well two at that but I’m working on getting my licenses
You can tell its a liftback if it haves the rear wiper
Video for Mazda3 first generation?
Had one for my first car, 2007 top spec luxury sport hatch (Aus). Had many compliments on the car and drives great and sharp. Managed to fit a TV cabinet inside the car once. Only had to replace engine mount and O2 sensor throughout 7 years of ownership.
I like those except for the insect eyes they have for headlights
Ilove the new one looks fancy
if i lived closer id love to have you review my 2006 volvo s60 t5, total sleeper
I work in Mazda parts, and would NOT recommend this generation if you want to keep it long term, ESP the liftbacks. Since they were a blend of mazda & ford parts, A LOT of the parts are retired and going to be very hard to find.
That cubby on the left is annoying af. The latch will get loose and then every bump you hit, it hits you.
Where are you located? I've got a 27k original mile (bolt on modded) mazdaspeed6 I'd love to have you review!
My first car was an 04 6 5spd ♥️
Illinois but I travel all over! You can submit it to ZackPradel.com/submit
I have a 2002 Mazda 6, 2.0 diesel rf5c, 121cp.
Isn't the 6 the 2nd gen of the 626?
Successor. It went from a Mazda platform to a adapted Ford platform.
