My men’s club had a 4 club event: driver, 7 iron, wedge and putter. We discovered our score was right on our handicap. Eye opening. I once played 9 holes with only a pitching wedge, no putter. Played right on my handicap.
I watch all of Mattys videos. Has really helped me. Dropped from 14 to 11 this year. And have a much better plan. Gonna watch another one of you videos now
@@roidAholic stratagy. He puts it in a fun way, it clicked with me. 1 stay away from trouble, even if it means being short. Also bump and run and pitch shots with 8,9,pitching wedge instead of always sand wedge. I don’t do toe down. But similar. I save 4-6 shots a round on just that
Well played! Golf Sidekick has really helped me lower my handicap and enjoy the process of improving a lot more. I'd pick 3w as a reliable tee and optional fairway club, 5i as I love hitting it, 8i for a reliable high lofted iron I can hit versatile shots with and 52 degree wedge as it's great for approaches and also bumping onto greens.
I'm a 20 HCP, and taking the driver out of my bag took 8 strokes off my next round. I could care less about distance if I'm losing a ball every other hole.
Can't say enough good things about Matt's advice, strategies and philosophy on golf. I've made great strides in my mental/strategy side of my golf game with the added bonus of learning many skills like toe down chipping and aimpoint, 6/8/10 horatio(bump and run chipping). What a playa Matty is.. oh and my club would be Driver or 4 iron for tee shots then 7 iron , Gap Wedge, Putter. Very Confidential with those clubs in a lot of different situations/shots on the course.
I really like this approach. Just this week I tried a 7 club set up (putter, driver, PW, SW, 6 &8 iron, 5 wood) and had the best round of my life! (36 over 9 holes). Like you, I found I had to be more creative with the clubs I had -- and had much better results!
Thanks Sam, great video that you showcased GSK, been watching him for 6yrs now. 3wood 25yrs old titanium, 9hybrid, 9i, 60deg...16hcap 65yrs from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 you got me I'm subscribed
I remember watching another vlog years ago, he said if swing is fine then mentally reduce stress and think of your options with club selection keeping it to 5-7 clubs incl putter. It is a mental wall to work with this but once you do it, it’s pretty encouraging. I played a round with 7 iron, 52 gap and putter, surprised how decent my score was 😂
I’ve had a similar experience but using 7 clubs, I had a hip replacement 12 months ago, and have just undergone my 2nd so simplifying golf is key. My handicap has slipped to 15. I’ll follow your channel and see what other tips I can pick up.
Nice subject! Simplify …. 12.5 driver. 3 mizuno hybrids. 3 mizuno irons. All 6* apart. 3 Cleveland smart sole full face wedge system on the way. Putter. Having fun….
Great video! Planning to even get a smaller golf bag (max 9 clubs) as I've been noticing i dont even use so many clubs during rounds. Been watching Matty Boom Boom for months. Subscribed to you as well 😊
I coach a high school team and I have them play with 3 clubs and a putter on a local par 3 course. It helps when you have to lay up and chip on instead of going for a green and double bogeying because you hit sand or water.
I love that Matty actually responds to some of my comments on his videos and gives solid advice. If I had to pick 4, I would go 3W, 7i, PW and putter, those are my most consistently good clubs. In fact, I just might try that today.
@@SamKingGolf well that didn’t last past the first hole LOL. For some reason driver was my confidential club and not 3W. After Blowing up on the first hole and a double on the second, I actually had a mostly good game. I completely obliterated my previous best drive, 318 yards as measured from the ball back to the tee. On the back 9 hit all 3 par 3’s in regulation as well as the longest par 5 hit 298 off the tee in the middle of the fairway.
I would choose driver then 5,8 and 56. I do this sort of thing often and something I also do is either odds or even clubs. It makes u re access shots cause u should be able to play 3 clubs for the same distance
Welcome back to what golf is..... Or should be! Golf is a game and games are designed to be played. Have you ever looked into how speed golfers play??? Spoiler it's exactly what you're doing here, other they run between shots. If you're keen to try this out in a comp but don't want to go all in, play with a half set aka play with just your even numbered clubs. I could go deep into why this is so effective, but the short version is: our brains control everything, therefore if your brain isn't engaged with the shot.... It can't send clear instructions to our muscles. Hope that helps
A great reset for sure! I think he did an earlier video of 7i only with putter which I tried and shot 1 over my handicap. Loved how that made me be creative with my swing but at the same time freed me up from having too high expectations because I was hitting a freaking 7i from everywhere😅 Great vid and am now a subscriber!
I’m thinking like a Playa, start at the hole and work back - putter, gap wedge, 7 iron, 6 hybrid, 7 wood. If I had another, it would be driver. These are my most confidential clubs! Like a baus! 😎
I would go with a five, eight, pitching wedge, sand wedge, and putter. By putting the driver in the bag, which is a one trick pony club, you ignore one of the tenants of his lessons; distance isn't everything. Accuracy and playable shots lead to better scores. Drivers seem to be the number one club for earning penalty shots for most golfers.
Yeah I wouldn’t have chosen it if I wasn’t hitting it so well at the moment! I’m looking forward to hitting Driver at the moment, so thought it was a good choice!
My 4 of choice would be, 4w 4 hybrid 8 iron 50 degree wedge I often play solo rounds and when i do i rarely take all 14 clubs. Normally play between 7 - 10 (inc putter) and pretty much play around if not under my hcp (8.1) Something i would suggest is to try a irons only round.

Thanks for the comment, Bob! Brilliant.
Matty Boom Boom has helped my mind on the course so much that my play is streets ahead.
Love this video. Wild how the limited clubs inspires confidentiality,
I'd pick 4w, 7i, 51°, and Putter
You should go out and try it. It was really fun and totally relaxing. Remember you get 4 clubs and a putter! What else would you choose?
@@SamKingGolf i definitely will! And I'll throw my PW in the mix in that case!

He’s the high handicap whisperer! If you watch the videos of me and him, you’ll see how much of a difference he made to my game!
what did you find the most helpful to get from 14 to 11? ive been watching matty but am stuck around a 15 hdcp. (used to be a 25-30 last year)

I’m a high handicapper. New set: hybrid 22,25/7&9 iron/56 wedge and putter. Last Sunday, I shot 90 in a par 72 course. Bogey golf!🥳

From the looks of the first 2 holes...it looks like you're golfing in heaven. The sky is gorgeous

good job, easy swing. I would advise 1W 150y 120y 90y P
3Hy (19), 7i, 9i, GW (48), Putter

Thanks for the comment, Nigel! Some great Golf there.
My favorite club: rescue, 7 iron, Sand wedge 56 degree and putter. Cheers from Indonesia!
Started playing 2 years ago. My bag has a used "Auto Pilot" (mini driver), 7, 9 , PW and putter. I shoot in the mid 90s.

The Way of the Playa!
5 wood 7 iron 9 iron 52 wedge putter
Mini driver, zu85 6 iron, 52, putter
I’ve always wanted a mini driver!!!
I'm playing in an association tournament tomorrow with 3 clubs plus a putter. I'm planning on going with my 5w, hybrid, and 7i.
Thanks for the video. I would use Driver, 6 iron, 9 iron, and 58 degree wedge, putter.
We’re similar! Love it… a 58° would scare me from 100 yards though 🤣

3W, 7i, 52*, putter.
3W, 6i, 9i, gap wedge. No putter needed. The gw makes beautiful putts.

Barney the master has arrived!!
I play with at most 5 clubs lately.
3 wedges, putter and a "chipper" that i CLOCK 190 yards straight as my long shot
Oh really? You hit a chipper 190??

3W, 7W, 7I, AW, P

71 yo M, play primarily with 4 clubs - driver, 4i, PW and putter. Not sure i quite understand what one does with a dozen or more clubs
my 4 would be my 5 wood, 7 iron, 54D plus putter
My 4 of choice would be,
4w
4 hybrid
8 iron
50 degree wedge
I often play solo rounds and when i do i rarely take all 14 clubs. Normally play between 7 - 10 (inc putter) and pretty much play around if not under my hcp (8.1)

Driver & Pitching, prob make scratch or bogey. Or 5w and putter. All easy pz
5 wood, 7 iron, 9 iron, sand wedge.
Matty Boom Boom is all of our boyfriends. 4i, 7i, 50deg, putter for me.
5w,8I,54°. If it’s 4 plus putter would add 6I
3 wood, 7 iron, PW.
What a pretty sky.
Well done...god
Where is this beautiful course?
It’s The Buddon, one of the Carnoustie courses. Incredible conditions at the moment.
Im off for a round in the morning on my own ...gonna leave the ego club (the driver) which im not very good with at home...😂
I keep debating playing a short set of 8 clubs. If only 4, I would choose 5w, 7i, GW and putter
I would definitely try it. Have you gonna out and tried it before?
@@SamKingGolf i have not, but I will soon
