Stick that hybrid in the bin. Try finding a comfortable "free throw" distance with a wedge and aim to leave those in instead of trying to hammer a hybrid 180+. Really enjoyed the video.
Mate, if I binned a club every time I had a poor round with it I’d have none left 😂 Would you believe that before this round I would have considered that hybrid to be my most consistent club. I think it just sums up high handicap golf that one day you can go out and forget how to hit it. I never really try to smash it to be fair. I know I only hit 170-175 so that’s what I’m usually attempting to do with 👍🏻 Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 👍🏻
I noticed you do something many of my friends would do….you take a practice swing or 2, and then instead of stepping closer to the ball you simply lean over further, which changes your posture….try keeping your posture and shuffle into the ball at address ….. good luck!
If you start doing that with wedges that u know yardages for it’s deadly so easy . If 52 is 82 yards pick ya spot focus on just in front of ball happy days try it game changer . And u can set ball with line off the tee helps loads do it bro
Haha I saw him say that he could have anyone playing off 9 and thought to myself “I think I could prove you wrong” 😂 I must get my people to reach out to his people 🤝😂
Great vid and and I have 2 questions: 1) What shot tracer softwatre do you use and does it track the balll automatically? 2) Forgive my lack of knowledge here, hole 5 was stroke index 7 (par 3) and with a handicap of 22.6 shouldn't a 5 be 1 point for a net Bogey? I am new to stableford scoring so just wanted to double check.
@JWD65 Hi mate, glad you enjoyed the vid and thanks for watching 👍🏻 I use shot tracer pro for Mac. Yes it can track the ball automatically however I find it doesn’t work well with grey skies etc so there can be a bit of manual adjustment needed. But I highly recommend the software 👍🏻 So my handicap index was 22.6 which translated into a course handicap of 26 so that’s what I was playing off for the round. So on stoke index holes 1-8 I actually had two shots, hence on 5 the double bogey was actually a net par. Hope that helps 👍🏻
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper Thanks for the reply mate, I never knew you could do a calculation for course handicap that was different from your playing handicap. Do you use an app that works this out for you or do you use that compicated formula?🤣
@@JWD65 what county are you based in mate and do you have an official handicap index? In Ireland, we use the Golf Ireland app which automatically calculates your course handicap using your handicap index. Also, I’m nearly sure, every golf course should have a notice board fairly visible that will show you what your course handicap is based on your index. Or for an unofficial app, you can use Hole 19 but I’m not sure it’s 100% accurate all the time. While your handicap index is one number, you will have a different course handicap depending which course you are playing and from what tees. At the same course, you’ll have one handicap from the yellow tees a completely different one from the whites and then again the blues 👍🏻
Great video as always. Probably poor course management and the putter cost you a lot of shots unfortunately. But well done on bringing down your handicap 👏😊
Thanks Yan, glad you enjoyed it. I actually thought my course management was ok and I was getting a good steer from Darren who’s a member. I just think I lost 6 or 7 strokes on the greens and maybe another couple with my hybrid which I literally just forgot how to use for a few hours 😂 Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Your practice swing always look mint. Try clubbing up and swinging slower like you do in your practice swings. You always look like you're trying to kill the ball after that nice smooth swing! The biggest thing I would say is watch your follow-through on your practice swings vs your actual swing.
Love the content, don't know if it will help but it seems you do a little wiggle with the club face just as you start your swing. Don't see it in your practice swings though. Maybe something to look at? Can't wait to see your next video.
Thanks Morgan, yeah I have this really weird kind of twitch, where I tend to close the face right before the takeaway. Not sure why but I always do it. I find it quite difficult to stay still over the ball for whatever reason 🤷🏻♂️ Really need to get rid of it 👍🏻
Even if you took 1 putt off each of the triplés, ypud have done very well. Your score is far more than the player you are-great driving but unlucky putting. Well played.
Cheers Oliver, really appreciate the positivity. To be honest, I didn’t think I even putted that badly. I just felt really, really unlucky. Just one of those days where absolutely nothing dropped. I think on another day I save about 5 strokes on the greens and then I’m looking at a 95 which would be quite respectable. Despite the putts I actually thought I played reasonably well 👍🏻
That was a tight course. Sometimes your round just doesn't go how you want. I know that feeling. Just a thought of something that's helped me (I'm a high handicapper too) on the 15th you were 260 yards away and took your hybrid I think. Do you have a club that you can reliably hit 130yds? (mine is an 8 iron). Why not split that 260 yds in half and take two 130yd shots? Sometimes I find that easier than trying to smash the hybrid 200yds and end up in the trees or the rough. Well done, though with that driver and thanks for sharing your progress, 'warts and all'. Good luck.
Yeah it was very tight to be fair. And no problem mate and thank you for watching and positively engaging with my channel 👍🏻 Being honest with you, not really. One of my biggest issues with my golf game is that I don’t really have a single club that I can hit well 100% of the time. I’m just as inclined to mishit a PW as I am a 5 iron. So when people say just hit two 130 yard shots, there is absolutely no guarantee that I won’t slice one of those into the trees etc. Funnily, previous to this video, the club I would have considered my most reliable was in fact my hybrid. I only hit it around 170 yards though so I’m never looking to smash it. It just failed on me during this round for whatever reason 🤷🏻♂️ And once you mishit one or two, it’s hard to get the confidence back during the round
Cheers Tom, thanks for watching as always. I’m still gonna put in the work and I’m sure eventually I’ll find a technique/rhythm that I’m comfortable with and hopefully then the shots will become slightly easier 👍🏻
Cheers John, actually couldn’t believe the score I posted in the end because I personally felt like I was about 10 strokes worse off at one point. Normally that hybrid is my favourite club and is one of the main reasons as to why I’ve lowered my handicap recently. Cannot fathom how I struggled with it so much. Just one of the great mysteries of high handicap golf how you can literally just forget how to hit a certain club for four hours. A 5 wood is next on my shopping list so hopefully that will help me out 👍🏻 Thanks for watching
Stumbled upon your channel as a fellow dub and just subscribed. I dont even have a rated hcap myself but in my opinion the biggest mistake I see mid 20 handicappers make is using too many drivers off the tee 3 woods/hybreds on the fairways. My feeling is you wont learn much hitting driver as you would long/mid irons and your less likely to have better accuracy than an iron shot. And in all honesty most arent really hitting driver any longer than they would a nice hit of a 5 iron. Would advise not to hit any hybrid from the fairway just go iron and you will likely improve quicker. Anyway fair play and will watch your journey with interest if you dont mind my unqualified remarks!👍
Hi mate, thanks for the sub, really appreciate it 👍🏻 I also appreciate your opinion on the biggest mistake you see high handicappers make in terms of driver but I genuinely don’t think it’s a one size fits all because it’s probably my most accurate club and just happens to be my longest by some distance. I honestly cant see the logic in not hitting it off the tee when it puts me in prime potion so often 👍🏻 Anyway, thanks for the input mate
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper Yeah I suppose, good point. A generalisation really and I made that comment early enough into the video. I can see you maximise distance with driver in general. I remember that 220yd one you hit on the back 9 and nobody is hitting a long iron that far. Suppose winter is coming in so less chances to get out perhaps but shur see you in the next one.
Yeah opportunities are certainly becoming more limited but I have the next one filmed already so hope to have it fully edited in a couple of weeks and then I’ve got another one pencilled in for the second weekend of October so still a bit of content to come 👍🏻
I haven’t been to the US since 2008, long before I played golf unfortunately. Would love to get back over and play some courses though. Where are you based?
What country are you in mate? In Ireland we have official handicaps that can only be tracked using the Golf Ireland app but if you’re just looking for an unofficial way to calculate your handicap I think Hole 19 works pretty well 👍🏻
Hi mate, so you can only use the Golf Ireland app if you’re a member of a golf club and already have a handicap. If you’re just looking for an unofficial one to give you an idea of what your handicap would be, Hole 19 worlds perfectly 👍🏻
An observation from the games I have seen. Your putting improves exponentially the longer the round goes on.Hit the practise green before you play. Time permitting.
Thanks Stephen. For this particular episode I got there in plenty of time for a good warm up however virtually all of it was used up trying to film the intro due to the tripod constantly tipping over in the wind. Was a little flustered then heading to the first tee box so took me a while to ease into the round after that 👍🏻
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper another good watch there. The weather almost told the story of the round. You weren't as composed and relaxed as you usually seem, perhaps the pressure of all those recent 90s? Anyway, positives to take would be the driving, the shot selection, and that you didn't have a single scratch in that wind!
@@Tonedefdom Yeah to be honest it was a really tough round to film. I got there about an hour early to film the intro and get a good warm up but it took me the full hour just to get the intros sorted because the tripod kept filling over. It even broke a piece of equipment. So I didn’t get any warm up done at all and ended up rushing to the first tee. Then that shot absolutely rattled me. And then when I was taking my shots I was constantly worried about the tripod tipping over which it did on many occasions just as I was about to swing or putt. So yeah, certainly wasn’t very composed. Had a lot going on. But there the bits the people don’t see when watching the vids 😂
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper that explains it. honestly, that sounds too much like hard work! We appreciate it. Let's hope it's calmer all round next time ;)
It definitely felt like hard work 😅 Filming is the least fun part of the job but I love editing and always enjoy pushing out the end product so it’s all worthwhile. Just makes it slightly more difficult to concentrate fully on the round itself but hey ho 😁
Cheers mate, I think I was just a little shell shocked after the first three 😳😂 Eased into it after that and was overall reasonably happy with the score in light of the conditions 👍🏻
Nah the putting absolutely killed me. You talk to anyone who’s played that course and they’ll mention the greens. And to be honest, I don’t even feel like I hit that many bad putts. I think on another day a lot more of those go in 👍🏻
i can't believe how this fella hits the ball without setting himself - two practice swishes then shifts over and immediately takes his shot. no wonder that he hits stinkers. SETTLE over the ball before hitting
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper i am directing it at others reading. i didn't expect you to answer yourself. anyway, good luck but try to take a little more time over the ball. i was at wentworth last week and they settle over the ball before hitting. just a second or so
Brother in golf...your tempo/pace is too fast. I heard you say it "I need to relax". Relax my dude. I can tell you swing/putting stroke are tense and forced.
21:05 better strat here may have been a 9-iron bump-and-run Swing it like you’re putting, and ideally land the first bump on the edge of the rough or fringe to let it roll the rest of the way down It takes a lot of the unpredictability of the tall stuff out of the shot
Perhaps mate. I did weigh it up at the time but that green was incredibly quick and running away from me towards water so I wasn’t confident in being able to stop the ball before the pin with a bump and run. And if you hit it past the pin there was a good chance you were going off the green and potentially in the water. I thought the putter was the percentage play. Thanks for the input 👍🏻
Good video and only thing I can see is you seem to rush a lot of shots especially putts, maybe take an extra minute on putts as that seems to be where you’re loosing a lot of points/stokes Just my thoughts but great to see another golfer enjoying the game and getting to play so many courses 🤙

I know I only hit 170-175 so that’s what I’m usually attempting to do with 👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 👍🏻
Way to grind out a score when the swing wasn’t working, in tough conditions too! 😊
Cheers mate, I remember checking the score walking up the 17th and couldn’t believe I wasn’t 20 strokes worse off 😂
I noticed you do something many of my friends would do….you take a practice swing or 2, and then instead of stepping closer to the ball you simply lean over further, which changes your posture….try keeping your posture and shuffle into the ball at address ….. good luck!
Thanks mate, I’ll try 👍🏻
Enjoy your videos
Thanks Kelly 👍🏻
If you start doing that with wedges that u know yardages for it’s deadly so easy . If 52 is 82 yards pick ya spot focus on just in front of ball happy days try it game changer . And u can set ball with line off the tee helps loads do it bro
Will do mate, cheers 👍🏻
Padraig Harrington is doing a series about getting evertone to single figures.
That should be your winter project 😎😎
Haha I saw him say that he could have anyone playing off 9 and thought to myself “I think I could prove you wrong” 😂
I must get my people to reach out to his people 🤝😂
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper only one way to find out.
Great vid and and I have 2 questions:
1) What shot tracer softwatre do you use and does it track the balll automatically?
2) Forgive my lack of knowledge here, hole 5 was stroke index 7 (par 3) and with a handicap of 22.6 shouldn't a 5 be 1 point for a net Bogey? I am new to stableford scoring so just wanted to double check.
@JWD65 Hi mate, glad you enjoyed the vid and thanks for watching 👍🏻
I use shot tracer pro for Mac. Yes it can track the ball automatically however I find it doesn’t work well with grey skies etc so there can be a bit of manual adjustment needed. But I highly recommend the software 👍🏻
So my handicap index was 22.6 which translated into a course handicap of 26 so that’s what I was playing off for the round.
I just think I lost 6 or 7 strokes on the greens and maybe another couple with my hybrid which I literally just forgot how to use for a few hours 😂
Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Come play Bray Golf Club!
I’d actually love to
Your practice swing always look mint. Try clubbing up and swinging slower like you do in your practice swings. You always look like you're trying to kill the ball after that nice smooth swing! The biggest thing I would say is watch your follow-through on your practice swings vs your actual swing.
@@derrickc6125 cheers mate 👍🏻
Despite the putts I actually thought I played reasonably well 👍🏻
just like my rounds, Cheers!
Sorry to hear that mate 😂
Heyas boss. Have missed your content
Cheers Mike, thanks for watching as always 👍🏻
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper anytime
And no problem mate and thank you for watching and positively engaging with my channel 👍🏻
Being honest with you, not really.
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper Fair enough. Perhaps I'm lucky to love my 8 iron. Great content and thanks for keeping things real. Good luck mate.
Cheers Tom, thanks for watching as always. I’m still gonna put in the work and I’m sure eventually I’ll find a technique/rhythm that I’m comfortable with and hopefully then the shots will become slightly easier 👍🏻
Given the conditions and the fact u r not used to fast greens u played well. U may want to give a 7 wood a try instead of your hybrid
A 5 wood is next on my shopping list so hopefully that will help me out 👍🏻
Thanks for watching
Hi mate, thanks for the sub, really appreciate it 👍🏻
I also appreciate your opinion on the biggest mistake you see high handicappers make in terms of driver but I genuinely don’t think it’s a one size fits all because it’s probably my most accurate club and just happens to be my longest by some distance.
Yeah opportunities are certainly becoming more limited but I have the next one filmed already so hope to have it fully edited in a couple of weeks and then I’ve got another one pencilled in for the second weekend of October so still a bit of content to come 👍🏻
Do you ever come to the US? I’m an 11 handicap and would love to host you.
I haven’t been to the US since 2008, long before I played golf unfortunately. Would love to get back over and play some courses though. Where are you based?
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper I'm in Utah. Would be fun to meet up for a round.
Well if I make it to Utah some day you’ll be first on my list 😁👍🏻
Mad how you get such a good swing with your driver then a half swing with your irons

Just getting into golf and want to see what my handicap would be, any idea what app is being used to track it?
What country are you in mate?
In Ireland we have official handicaps that can only be tracked using the Golf Ireland app but if you’re just looking for an unofficial way to calculate your handicap I think Hole 19 works pretty well 👍🏻
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper I'm from Dublin actually lad so that works out! Just the golf ireland app?
Hi mate, so you can only use the Golf Ireland app if you’re a member of a golf club and already have a handicap.
If you’re just looking for an unofficial one to give you an idea of what your handicap would be, Hole 19 worlds perfectly 👍🏻
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper ah class, cheers!
@@OhhxMercy best of luck with it mate 👍🏻
An observation from the games I have seen. Your putting improves exponentially the longer the round goes on.Hit the practise green before you play. Time permitting.
Thanks Stephen. For this particular episode I got there in plenty of time for a good warm up however virtually all of it was used up trying to film the intro due to the tripod constantly tipping over in the wind. Was a little flustered then heading to the first tee box so took me a while to ease into the round after that 👍🏻
38.4 here and I was getting stressed watching you
@@niallerc1969 I must be bad so 😂 Keep the faith and best of luck with your progress 🏌🏻♂️
Well that's my night sorted then... Get the kids down first 😅
Well hopefully you enjoy it mate 😃
What did the old guy shoot?
I think he prefers “Darren” mate 😂 I think it was a 92 👍🏻
To be fair those greens looked brutal for putting so don’t be so hard on yourself.
Cheers mate, I think I was just a little shell shocked after the first three 😳😂
Eased into it after that and was overall reasonably happy with the score in light of the conditions 👍🏻
You’re not “the worst golfer in the world” I am
I only feel like that sometimes but definitely think I could give you a run for your money 😂
Not the best conditions to play in. However the putting hasn't helped you out putting a good score together. You'll score better next time!
Nah the putting absolutely killed me. You talk to anyone who’s played that course and they’ll mention the greens. And to be honest, I don’t even feel like I hit that many bad putts. I think on another day a lot more of those go in 👍🏻
Get something like a Sony a6400 and these videos will be even better.
👍🏻
practice swing looks better than the actual swing.
Well observed
there will always be a course that can beat you..............
Maybe not the course but definitely the greens 😂
You shouldn't be so harsh on yourself, this wasn't a 'turd' video at all, in fact I thought it was quite good 😂
Well I’m glad you enjoyed the video despite the language difficulties 😂
i can't believe how this fella hits the ball without setting himself - two practice swishes then shifts over and immediately takes his shot. no wonder that he hits stinkers. SETTLE over the ball before hitting
@@paultaylor7059 why are you speaking about me in the third person? Who are you directing the comment at? Me or people watching the video?
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper i am directing it at others reading. i didn't expect you to answer yourself.
anyway, good luck but try to take a little more time over the ball. i was at wentworth last week and they settle over the ball before hitting. just a second or so
Brother in golf...your tempo/pace is too fast. I heard you say it "I need to relax". Relax my dude. I can tell you swing/putting stroke are tense and forced.
👍🏻
21:05 better strat here may have been a 9-iron bump-and-run
Swing it like you’re putting, and ideally land the first bump on the edge of the rough or fringe to let it roll the rest of the way down
It takes a lot of the unpredictability of the tall stuff out of the shot
Perhaps mate. I did weigh it up at the time but that green was incredibly quick and running away from me towards water so I wasn’t confident in being able to stop the ball before the pin with a bump and run. And if you hit it past the pin there was a good chance you were going off the green and potentially in the water. I thought the putter was the percentage play.
Thanks for the input 👍🏻
@@DiaryofaHighHandicapper you probably played it right, then. Hard to say without having been there
A Hybrid (putter grip and putting stroke) would have been the best option from that lie on the fridge of the Green fringe at the 12th
Good video and only thing I can see is you seem to rush a lot of shots especially putts, maybe take an extra minute on putts as that seems to be where you’re loosing a lot of points/stokes
Just my thoughts but great to see another golfer enjoying the game and getting to play so many courses 🤙
Cheers mate, appreciate the message. Definitely need to slow down a bit 👍🏻
You di need to settle and firm yourself up on the putts, your stance is crazy.
