I never get enough of these chipping technique vids. There have been too many rounds where I'm inside 40 yds and end up taking 4-6 more shots to end the hole. It's SO frustrating!!!
For the majority of my chip shots, I use a 9 iron. Was taught by a great teacher 30 years ago. I get up and down allllll the time. Like 60 to 70% of the time. Even from a long distance (like 30 yards) I use it. The only time I don't is when there is too much rough in front of me etc. I hold the heel up slightly off the ground so it doesn't get stuck on the shot. And using the 9 iron all the time I have gotten real good at it (as opposed to using several different clubs). Works for me.
It’s basically a chipper. There was one hole I could never par at my local course and some dude told me to pitch up with a 9 and it landed 3 feet from the hole for a par. I practice the 9 around the green all the time now
I’ve been using my 8 and PW lately and have pondered dropping my 60. I do well with the 60 and I’m not sure if my 56 has too much bounce for my all around wedge. I also don’t have a replacement at the top of my bag.
nice video- great to watch! super helful. learned a lot. i didnt realize a seven had all that bounce! and your explanation about swinglenth and surging the grip- so crystal clear!
Re-watched this video this morning before my round and spent like 15 min practicing with my pitching wedge before I started, managed 3 "up and down's" although only one was for a par. Thanks for the good advice, and keep up the good work!
Great lesson! Mr. SG you are the perfect short game guru for this. Given your West/East coast background, can you please do a detailed video on how to chip/pitch off bermuda lies constrasting with playing on the West coast grass. We love ya!
Spot on MSG. I tend to use PW more often on the course I play. But I’m comfortable with my higher lofted clubs too. The tip about the slightly open face is great. Keeps from digging and uses the bounce.
I can play all the short game shots you teach and am a 6.5 hdcp but for the higher handicappers (just a thought here) I don’t agree with taking more of a swing with a 58-60, thats where they get in trouble around the greens. You should focus on teaching them to hit the short swing, back of stance,50- 54 bump and run , putt-like- whenever it is at all possible. The GOAT 🐯always teaches get the ball running on the green like a putt as much as you can using the 9 iron . Pitch , 50- 54 . Thanks as always. Really enjoyed and have already been using the weight forward 60 degree spinner around the greens and love it. Keep up the awesome work.
I’m watching this a few times over to get it programmed in my brain. It will take some practice to apply all of this it won’t come naturally that’s for sure but thank you for all the great tips I’ve applied some of the other tips from your other videos and it has really helped my game tremendously… Thank you!
Love the tips around the green. Always enjoy those. Can we have some videos on fairway bunkers? I was raised in the area where the Greenbrier Iocated. You should let fans know when you travel so we could give some support.
Thank you very much for your valuable advice on approach shots. My game is really a lot better now and I'm more confident around the greens and my score is a lot lower.
I know a lot of people who prefer a low or high iron for a low flighted shot and that shot is important but once you start playing tough greens I can’t stress how important it is to hit your non A/P wedges with check on it anywhere from 20-50 yards. Grab your 60 and 56 and practice those short swings so that you can take as much difficulty out of the green as possible. Getting the ball to hit and sit especially when you’re on the fairway and you can really nip it is invaluable for making a tough green non existent. You simply cannot trust the roll out on every shot. Being deadly from 60 yards gives you more 1 putts for birdie while saving par a lot
This is what I'm missing in my game. I have a 50 and 54 so I'll probably get a 58 for this. Any tips for a newer golfer on learning these sort of "lob shots" or whatever you call them
Timely video for me. I’m recovering from a ligament strain in my right shoulder so my golf is limited to chipping and putting. It’s forcing me to use my torso instead of my hands on my swings. I can see an improvement in my short game in the near future. Keep the vids coming.
Another great video Matt! In order to simplify my chipping from fairway type lies I go back to 7:30 or 8:00 and which club I use depends on how far the pin is from me, the contour of the green and if it is uphill or downhill. My most used clubs are Lob, SW, PW and 9 iron. If I am in rough I will slightly open my club face and take a bit of a longer backswing.
Hope you follow with some more content and video from the resort. It's a beaut! Enjoyed the technique and very much in line with some old Pelz basics I have tried to resurrect. Thanks
Another great video! Really appreciate these tips. Side note, noticed you still have the graphite shafts in your irons. Fight some tendinitis in my elbow right now and thinking of making the switch. I know you have had some wrist issues in the past, so I was wondering if the switch to graphite has helped with that issue.
Thanks! The best advice for chipping. Let the club head fall and do the work, and don't pull the handle to "hit" it. I had the chipping yips for a year due to instruction saying "don't let the club head pass the handle". Shanks and skulls almost every time.
I usually use my gap wedge or putter around the greens but i do have a square strike mazel type chipper Any difference in using that? I generally use the chipper as my 100 yrd club
Hi Matt...just found your channel and have found your tips very practical. Can't wait to try them out. Just a question which I am sure you have answered before but are your feet and clubhead square to the target line even though you have opened up your club face? Thanking you in advance.
It’s interesting, Phil says the EXACT opposite of this. Hands lead. Weight forward. Ball either off back foot or front depending on if you wanna hit low or high. Guess it just depends on what you’re comfortable with.
This isn't all that different from Phil's high shot. Phil's low shot technique takes skill that most amateurs don't have. Exposes the leading edge a lot so you have to really nip it perfectly to avoid a chunk or skull. I love that shot but the average golfer shouldn't be trying it.
The stroke is: upper arms tight to chest. Pelvic rotation, with soft hand grip! A putting stroke without some truncal rotation won’t deliver! Slight open face on club allows bounce to assist! Still great chipping, ball 3-4’ off hole, always, so very hard to do!
can you do a video on shots that are difficult to figure out what to use? For example, a chip that is a downhill lie onto a green that is running downhill and away from you. How do you even attempt a shot like that?
My course has all the greens up on mounds to help with drainage. I always just play to the front and if I miss, it’s short with an easy bump and run. BUT I can’t find any videos on how to play my miss when it’s off the side, that always has me scoring a bogey if not worse.. ruining my chances for sub 80. So HOW!?!? Do you play a shot on the side or at the bottom of the hill, when your ball is sitting deep, to land it soft on the green when the pin is on the short side??? There’s also the areas that are lacking grass because of the pines and flopping a shot always seems to get chunky and a bump up the hill is too hard to even judge the pace through the rough. Hope to figure it out someday!
Hey Matt. My chipping sucks which is why I'm watching your vids, however please do me a favor. Stop going to the lovely Greenbriars of the world. Find a crappy local municipal course with bare lies adjacent to the greens. You know, the spots where the idiots park their carts and grind the grass down to a few millimeters. That's what I need help with as my local course loses grass cover during winters and the often-dry summers here in Australia. Cheers mate.
The key to bunker play is not to look at the ball - rather you look at the spot you want the club to impact the sand an inch behind the ball - do not look at the ball, if you do, you will miss your spot regularly
I feel like my short game is good, but my driving is TERRIBLE. short game im like 85% with, but driving im more like 10% or less are actually decent shots. still learn a lot from these short game videos though
Just go to a local pro and invest in a pack of ten lessons focused on driver. Driver is the easy part, basically none of the fundamentals change. Your feet are flat, the club head is large, the ball is teed. You just have to figure out a driver swing that works and learn how to repeat it.
Phil Mickelson gives different instructions on chipping (i.e., hand position). So I'm conflicted on what instructions should be followed: th-cam.com/video/dpFd1xocxrE/w-d-xo.html
At 4:25ish he tells you to turn the body and then when he takes his shot it’s All arms. Lmao dude isn’t a teacher he’s a wanna be TH-cam view collector 😂
I dont believe there is 1 club for most chips like the “most lofted”. Lies, position, ect should determine your club every time. If you practice them literally every club can have a roll in chipping. Get good with 3-4 clubs and you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to play diff shots around the green.
I never get enough of these chipping technique vids. There have been too many rounds where I'm inside 40 yds and end up taking 4-6 more shots to end the hole. It's SO frustrating!!!

I practice the 9 around the green all the time now
Thats good to know. I was practicing chipping yesterday with my 7 iron, but I'll try it with my 9 next time. Hopefully with better results
I’ve been using my 8 and PW lately and have pondered dropping my 60. I do well with the 60 and I’m not sure if my 56 has too much bounce for my all around wedge. I also don’t have a replacement at the top of my bag.
Far and away, the most consistent and effective tool on the green is a chipper. Cleveland Smart Sole chipper with a large or putter grip.
nice video- great to watch! super helful. learned a lot. i didnt realize a seven had all that bounce! and your explanation about swinglenth and surging the grip- so crystal clear!
Jason Day calls it “using your big muscles” to chip & pitch ! 👍 Great vid !
I've really been getting into the rule/ratio of 12 for these shots. It helps a bunch
Re-watched this video this morning before my round and spent like 15 min practicing with my pitching wedge before I started, managed 3 "up and down's" although only one was for a par. Thanks for the good advice, and keep up the good work!
9-iron for bump and run on long chips (40+ feet or so). 58° for everything else. Thats what works for me 👍
Great lesson! Mr. SG you are the perfect short game guru for this. Given your West/East coast background, can you please do a detailed video on how to chip/pitch off bermuda lies constrasting with playing on the West coast grass. We love ya!
Hey Matt! Great tips! Can you specifically show downhill lies next to the greens? That’s my biggest trouble shot. Thanks
Spot on MSG. I tend to use PW more often on the course I play. But I’m comfortable with my higher lofted clubs too. The tip about the slightly open face is great. Keeps from digging and uses the bounce.

Bull's Eye, MSG ... You manage to play the BEST courses. Your YTs are always fun to watch.
Thank you, thank you....this lesson explains so much on what I have doing wrong
Excellent video--thank you. I struggle being too short with my 60, but then too long with PW...I do appreciate your suggestions. Thanks.
I loveee the pitching wedge
Great instruction, short and to the point. This will help my chipping in the next round.

Loving the videos Matt. Would love to see how to manage a sloped lie with the ball below your feet.
Thank you so much for the tips! I find your videos very helpful and I have benefited from them greatly!
Great video, this is golden advise.

Also..just let the club head swing back inside after the ball. Don't try to swing the club head towards the target.
Great vid Matt! - Gravity is our friend - so are dead arms with this shot!!
Thanks Matt, great stuff!
Great lesson
Just moved back to ga, need a swing coach like you in my life 😂
Thanks, I use 7, 8 or a 9. Depends on how far away. Please show fairway woods sometime.
Fairway wood chipping is no different than putting to me. It might hop 2 inches which isn’t really different than putting it
Cool, but can you show us how to hit our 2nd shot from the fairway with a fairway wood? 3,5,7 or even a 9? Thanks
@@baddogdax69 oh. Well from your first comment it seemed like you were referring to chipping with a wood which some people do
I usually use my gap wedge or putter around the greens but i do have a square strike mazel type chipper
Any difference in using that?
I generally use the chipper as my 100 yrd club
245 driver and I would be chipping lol. Love your content bro.
I really enjoy the videos, and you make it look way too easy LOL

Thx again Matt. 👍
It’s interesting, Phil says the EXACT opposite of this. Hands lead. Weight forward. Ball either off back foot or front depending on if you wanna hit low or high. Guess it just depends on what you’re comfortable with.
I follow Phil's method and it works great , it eliminates hitting the ball thin

I think it’s good to master as many techniques as possible, I like Phil’s hinge and hold method, works a treat
100%
I feel every thing you say
Never chipped better in my life
Thanks so much
I’m learning on bad hard lies sometimes 9 iron to be consistent is best and not a wedge
Brilliant video. How do you like those new G/Fore shoes?
Can u plz do a video comparing alternatives to putting on the fringe from the far side of the green?? Like a bump & run shot
Great video. Do you ever use a hybrid?
Try using hybrid with putting stroke
40 to 20 yards it’s always my 8 or a 50* just depends on the loft I want. 56* 20 and in unless it’s a bump.
The stroke is: upper arms tight to chest. Pelvic rotation, with soft hand grip! A putting stroke without some truncal rotation won’t deliver! Slight open face on club allows bounce to assist! Still great chipping, ball 3-4’ off hole, always, so very hard to do!

I live in the Atlanta, Ga area...do you offer short game clinics?
Love your expertise and coaching style. Chipping is the worst part of my game.
I prefer pw lined up with back foot, never chunk or blade it 👌
9 iron for me!
🔥🔥🔥
How do you avoid double contacts?
Deep 3” rough around the green.

Some higher lofted sand wedges have too much bounce for chipping from tight lies like this, please comment. Skull across the green.
I’m deadly with my 9 iron. Everything left inside 6 feet
I'm with you 100%. I switch to my 9IN up to 15 yards away and I find it very controllable and accurate.

I’ve been shanking when chipping. Ugh
Matt "Which" club not what.
How is your Lefty game going
Not good
I chip with a chipper, its way more accurate. Why won't people use a chpper
Actually, the 7 has about 1* of bounce
My 7 iron has 4.5° of bounce.
At 4:25ish he tells you to turn the body and then when he takes his shot it’s All arms. Lmao dude isn’t a teacher he’s a wanna be TH-cam view collector 😂
if its not a 56 12 then i dont want to hear it. for all shots under 30-40y
