Dog Mountain: Sacred ground for dog lovers

  • After a near-death experience, artist Stephen Huneck created Dog Mountain, a 150-acre leash-free retreat in scenic northern Vermont. The centerpiece remains Dog Chapel, a place where dogs could be remembered by their loving humans. Correspondent Martha Teichner tells a bittersweet story of love and loss, and of the chapel's enduring celebration of the bond we have with our pets.

I absolutely know that pain. My 12 year old Murphy, the doggie that was my friend after my Mom passed away and my kids moved out of the house, during the Pandemic...he passed last June. As Martha wrote the name of her doggie friends she'd lost, I lost it too. So many tears. I see dogs that need homes online and think, "Oh how adorable this or that one is." But, I just can't bring myself to make the move yet. You have my sympathy and empathy. Thank you for being in this world for Jason, Odie. ❣💔❣

Please, there are so many out there that need you and you need them. So many say they'll never get another because of the pain of loss. But without them, we'd never have known the truest, purest love and joy ever. Give yourself and another dog that gift.

This is amazing. About twenty five years ago, my boss wrote and published in local newspaper, an obituary, for her beloved dog. A random women made a huge issue with the dog death announcement, when she proclaimed to be only for humans. 🐶 Some people just don't get it. 🤨

No they don't. This reminded me of the time a so called "friend" stopped by my house. My dog loved everyone. I just happened to walk out of the bathroom in time to see him push her away and heard him say "get out of here" I told him "this is her home and you'll leave long before she ever will" She was my kid. My baby girl. They are family!

As a 5-year old, I was asked to pray out loud in Sunday School in a very small town FL Baptist Church. Of course, I asked God to bless my mama and daddy but when I also prayed for my dog "Lady Bug," the Sunday School teacher KNOW IT ALL, stopped me in midsentence and advised the entire group that animals don't have souls and that we shouldn't pray for them. I didn't pray aloud after that for many, many years and I continued to pray silently knowing that farmers pray for their flocks, herds, etc. They also pray for rain just as any Pagan prays for good weather conditions. I left the Baptist faith and have never returned to it as they are so very narrow minded.

My dog passed this year 1/6/2023 9:40am. She was a 4.5 pound little white Maltese. Her name was “ Snow ball”. I was so fortunate to be her mom for 16 years. She helped me through my panic disorder, depression and PTSD. Without her, i wouldn’t be here. She gave me the will, courage and strength to cope with my pain and sufferings. I was fortunate to met her in this life. I hope we will meet again in the next life or after life. She will always be a part of my heart. I’m forever grateful for all the love she’s shown me.

So very sorry to hear about your fur-baby. How lucky you had her for that long by your side. I lost my soul-dog Natasha in 2016, she was my heart and also a Maltese. I cried more for her loss than both of my parents because she was with me all time for 12 years. Hopefully her memory will bring you some solace.

I live a few minutes away. I was there this morning before this broadcast. Its on the eastern side of the hill so the sun shines during the cold morning and lets me get some very much needed vitamin D. Its hard to get this time of year so far north and with so much clothing on. It was 18 degrees and very icy. I come 2 or 3 times a week and do trail maintenance a few times a year with my chainsaw. Great workout. The Huneck's were very special people. There is a small group of volunteers that get together several times a year to take care of the place. I'm humbled to be one of them. It is a very special place.

I had a cat named Sugar Baby from when I was a little kid until a couple of months before I was 22. Then I had a cat named Eleanor who lived to be 12-years-old. This February 22nd will be 4 years since she passed. I adopted a new kitten named Harriet shortly after, but it actually takes adopting another kitten- or puppy to begin to heal from the grief of losing a beloved cat or dog! Pet loss is a club that you never want to be a member of! 😢💔

Shockingly, this may be the first, that I remember anyway, Sunday Morning piece that made me cry. I was devastated to hear that Steve and his wife had both taken their own lives, but when Martha was writing the names of all the dogs she'd loved and lost, that just pushed me over the edge. So many tears. I lost my very special Boxador named Murphy last June. I see dogs and think about adopting one again, but I'm not over my loss yet. I have two rescue Ragdoll kitties that are affectionate and keep my company. But, there's nothing like a doggie friend, is there? ❣💔❣💔❣

I still grieve my first Old English Sheepdog from 40 years ago (and all the others since - all rescues). I don't think one ever "gets over" such losses - they are too personal, too close, too deep. Don't let that stop you from finding another to fill your life with joy and love. You will ask yourself why you waited.

Waiting At The Door: I was just a pup when we first met, I loved you from the start. You picked me up, took me home and placed me in your heart. Good times we had together, we shared all life could throw. But years passed all too quickly, my time has come to go. I know how much you miss me, I know your heart is sore, I see the tears that fall, when I'm not Waiting At The Door. You always did your best for me, your love was plain to see, for even though it broke your heart, you set my spirit free. So please be brave without me, one day we'll meet once more. For when you're called to Heaven, I'll be Waiting At The Door ~ (Author Unknown) ~ Peace and comfort to everyone who has lost their beloved pet(s) from an old beach guy 🙏✌

My sister Firstgirl gave me a puppy when I was 8 years old. Duke was my best friend, and I loved him dearly. 2 years later, on Mother's Day, children of our guests let him out of his enclosure and were chasing him. He was scared and he ran out to the main road. I witnessed his end and picked him up and was begging my dad to do something for him. Years later, he told me it was the only time he heard someone's heart breaking. I've only had one other dog that passed 36 years ago and 2 cats. I don't think I will ever have another pet because I still miss and love those 4.

To my astonishment, there was a stained glass image of St. Peter ( I think) with a dog!...I wanted so badly to take a picture but cameras were not allowed 😔. Made smile at the thought they understood our love for our pets and captured it in this art form thousands of years ago.

There should also be a Cat Mountain and a Bird Mountain. If I was wealthy and had acres of land, I would do the same. Many of us cannot have dogs for various reasons and prefer cats and birds as pets. We all suffer when our beloved pets pass on. It is comforting to us to remember that they are waiting at Rainbow Bridge where we will be reunited some day.

Oh I definitely got to go to this place and take my dog's ashes so amazing I'm sorry they both committed suicide they've created something sacred for people who love dogs and how important they are in their life I hope they can see the miracle they created I don't understand how important they were to dog lovers everywhere

Outside a courthouse in Warrensburg, MO is a sculpture of a dog named Old Drum. He was shot and killed for intruding on a neighboring farm in 1869. Drum's owner sought justice and it was in that courthouse where the attorney representing Charles Burden, Drum's master, coined the term "Dog is man's best friend"
As for me, I don't believe animals have a soul. But I believe Heaven is a place of perfect happiness. For that reason I picture my Dad sitting at the kitchen table. It's 8:30 in the morning, he's smoking a cigarette and at his feet, under the table, is our dog Tippy quietly lying there. Man's best friend.
