The secret life of dogs

  • The animated movie "The Secret Life of Pets," one of the summer's biggest blockbusters, explored what our animals are up to after we leave the house each day. Pets have a secret life, all right. But for dogs, it's mostly about how they experience the world: through their noses. Did you know they can actually tell time through their sense of smell? Martha Teichner reports.

After spending the last 2 decades working at various shelters and having many of my own dogs I have found that the best thing for separation anxiety is to have 2 dogs or more. Dogs are not lonesome creatures. They want company and by providing a sibling of sorts they have that company and they tend to act a lot different when you're gone then they did when they were alone. And it's a lot better than putting them on drugs.

Agreed. They’re pack animals, they do better and live more happy, fulfilling lives with other canine companions. I have 2 beagles. My oldest, Scout, became a different dog when we adopted her brother, Brogan. We would never have less than 2 dogs at one time because of it. Dogs truly are remarkable creatures.

I ended up adopting another dog who was opposite in personality which help my first dog calm down and be more social. Sadly, my second dog passed away after 3 years but my first on no longer had separation anxiety. Some dogs just need another dog for companionship.

@@prometheus5700 No, they don't always do. I've seen many cases where dogs have developed self-destructive habits like liking and biting themselves to an extreme that it causes wounds that never heal as they keep licking and biting - that is an obvious sign of anxiety. I've seen dogs that stop eating - that is an obvious sign of depression.
It is a simple matter of being conscious instead of selfish... too many people have dogs because they like having dogs but they don't have the time to tend to them. Animals are hard work - they require care, time, attention, money, dedication... if you think of a pet as a thing then you're definitely not fit to have one.

She was fine at home but bring her out into the world and she couldn't process the new information coming at her in real time. I would watch her face as she went into over load and then she's just freak out. Poor girl. She was eventually adopted, but I don't know how it turned out for her.

Animals are like people, different strokes for different folks. You just have to watch a few TH-cam videos to see the variety of musical preferences. Personally, I had a GSD that ignored the TV; one night, we were watching "The Wizard of Oz" and the second Judy started to sing "Over the Rainbow", he dropped his chewy and turned his head to the set, looked at me then back to the set. The cat could care less about Judy Garland but did he dig Coltrane or Dizzy Gillespie (honest to Pete)!

I believe in my soul that pets need to be around other pets. Loneliness kills. Have more than one fur baby so that your baby has a friend to play with while you are away. My female dachshund was so depressed that we rescued a cocker spaniel for companionship. She was cranky with the new dog for two weeks. After this initial period they were glued to the hip and her depression disappeared. Same thing with our third and fourth rescues. Anyhow, blessings to all of the pet parents in the world! 💕🌸😇🐶

My solution, have 2 dogs. The whole dynamic changes. They become a pack. They play with each other. They don't need you all the time. You can leave them alone for a long time without problems. They are happy when you are around. But not lonely, when you are not. My experience is that 2 dogs is not really more work. Some shores double. But they become a lot less needy, which compensates any extra work.

I only adopt the "unadoptable" dogs. They are always abused in some way. Prozac is always implemented at least for 6 months, sometimes longer. There has NEVER been a situation where I have not rehabbed and rehome a dog unsuccessfully. Too bad people don't consider their dogs like human children....such a convenience to dispose of a dog at the pound. I have fostered human children and also dogs. You can employ similar rehab techniques to both. Remember, dogs are better than humans (except children, as they are innocent).

PLEASE don't get a dog if you can't give them what they need. Leaving a dog hours and hours every day, having a dog that is too big for the area, forcing a dog to hold urine and feces to the point of pain, punishing them for the things they do because of separation anxiety (or wetting/soiling from being left too long), leaving them kenneled all day, is ALL animal cruelty. It's not right. Drugging a dog in order to inhibit their behaviors due to intolerable living conditions is AS*ININE! I would NEVER take my dog to a vet that thinks like that. They should lose their license.

This is a topic I’m passionate about! Yes they are highly social animals and knowing this it is imperative to their health that we provide them with ample stimulation breed specific. Most have the dog play with them in the first few years then when the novelty wears off interaction is diminished if at all still offered to the pet. They deserve so much more than most are willing and or capable of giving. Dogs are perpetual 3-5 year old children. Needing attention, of all kinds play, walks affection and also stimulating their brains is important. Seriously how many dog owners live up to all of this for their dogs? Yes we have other obligations and distractions so is it fair that we have dogs when most of us can’t provide the needs of our so called furry family members? I’m not throwing blame here I count my self in this. I currently am living without my own dog and so have come to realize that I wasn’t living up to my dogs needs, and now have decided to not get another until I can provide all of its needs!

It wld be a joy to help these guys without a voice, out. They can't tell you their plight, their hard luck stories,, but helping them out, gives so much joy to them, as they live in the moment. And you will feel a new sense of happiness as well.

All of these "dog lovers" are inconvenienced by the reality of having to work 9 to 5 and selfishly impose their dilemma upon the creatures they supposedly adore so much. Hey animal haters: If you can't provide a home for your dog without causing them psychological problems due to you prolonged absence during the day, perhaps you shouldn't adopt said pets. These are living, breathing creatures who require constant companionship. If you think you are doing them favors by tossing bowls of dry food and squeaky toys at them while you're at work, you are sadly mistaken. Not only are you traumatizing these furry bundles of joy, but you are neglecting their mental health. I know my concerns expressed here mean nothing to selfish animal haters, but at least I will practice what I preach and refrain from adopting a dog until I retire. All of our family members--especially our dogs and cats--deserve to be treated well.

I have a solution that worked just after 1 try in order to stop them CHEW your entire house. A little background information: 3 middle size American Staffordshire Terrier, (big dogs/big damage) 1 sterilized female Kisha (4 years), Aron (4 years) and Macho (2 years/their son) started to chew on ANYTHING while I was at work despite an abundance of toys and exercise and dare I say their age! I have to mention that they are great with other dogs small or large, people and love to sunbathe and to jump by themselves in the water, not so much in all honesty cats 🥺 I dealt with the fence, swing, chairs, shoes chewing tantrum but when the car front bumper and the electrical system was gone one day I got DESPERATE! I went to the market and I bought RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS (not the Mexican types, I think you even have to be 18 years old to purchase) and 3 packs of milk. I smeared EVERYTHING that was MINE and poured the milk in the bowls. I KNOW IT SOUNDS CRUEL but I didn’t want them Drugged nor Chained to the house for 9 hours of day Monday to Friday... I sneaked across the street and watched the security live feed. I felt bad for them, but they learned in 5 minutes bad association and to this day almost 3 years later they KNOW. They still steal or lick the plate that I can same time forget but NowBody is perfect and I can live with that 😅🥰☺️
PS: my dogs were healthy and young at that time so please ask your vet for advice. Perhaps dogs that are old, have asthma/congenital anomalies are an other matter. Thinking back I would have used same thing bitter similar to what we have today in nail polish for smaller children that chew their nails, perhaps such a thing even exist at your pet pharmacy 🥰

People are Nuts! They don't want to be lock indoors all day. But somehow they think it's okay for animals. FYI: Dogs have NOSES! They like to be outdoors smelling their environment & to communicate with other dogs. Don't get a dog if you don't have a yard & take it on walks, everyday!!!

So the alternative is to leave them languishing in loud, cold, impersonal shelters? Or to be euthenized due to over crowding? Think big picture. Pets KNOW when they are loved. They would much rather wait for their owner to come home than be lonely and "alone" in a shelter any day of the week!

August 2019 Every city and town deserves a FREE 24 hour indoor dog park with 'tennis courts' for dogs to run off leash at all hours. These buildings should be designed by Richard Gage of 'Architects and Engineers for 9 ll Truth' and 'Firefighters for 9 ll Truth' to make sure every inch is as safe as possible (unless sabotaged behind their backs). All First Responders, including veterinarians and vet techs, should be allowed to live for free in these buildings and parking lots, as well as their extended family and circle of friends. This would make every location safer to walk through and drive through for EVERYBODY. RG voted for Ronald Reagan, so this is not political, it is about safety. Consider naming each building 'The Doris Day (and her son who died early of skin cancer, bench plaque markers) Memorial Dog Park Building' (and separate buildings for men called 'Steve Allen Memorial Dog Park Building' he invented the Tonight Show, was a talented jazz pianist, and ate out of garbage cans while traveling across America and constantly begging for food. He said that the only people who were nice to him were the Mexicans. Memorial names of kind people, (or their pet's names to overcome arguments) instead of 'Section 8' because that is a military term which translates into 'worthless person.' Thank you in advance and have a great decade, etc., for reading this carefully, discussing this with your friends, and if you are wealthy, to help make it happen as soon as possible to help save millions of dogs, etc.
