What surprises me the most is how many changes the game went through during development - that the development was so flexible and fluid that almost nothing became as it was initially thought to be, while still maintaining complete coherence in the plot and gameplay is truly astounding!
15:56 >Here is the actual solution to the puzzle >Camera trained on two guys silently staring at their laptop while video plays offscreen. Quality camera work.
@TheKaelkinator look graphics dont make the game and you have to remember this was the beta or maybe even alpha stage of production. if it was released it would have looked as good as it did now. why would developers waste time and money to polish something that might not be used
Honestly, this would've been so much better if the camera wasn't pointed at the creators half the time (we don't even get to see a few things, like the early solution to a laser puzzle before lasers). That was really annoying.
+Sorual well what i think is that the 1st game takes place at the same time of hl1 and the 2nd game might take place something menney yerars arfter ep 3
They explained it in an interview before portal 2's release. It had something to do with gravity. I think you could like fling yourself or flip the room and stuff like that. Not 100% sure.
I think that they should make another game in the portal setting, not necessarily with the same mechanics and everything. And not necessarily portal 3, maybe do something that takes place before the original portal like they wanted to originally, maybe you could call it Aperture or something like that because it would be confusing if the game called portal 3 happened before 1 or 2.
OH MY GOD RICHARD AYOADE? THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BEAUTIFUL. I just gasped and openly stared. He also just butchered his last name but it's fine. Oh my god. I love Stephen too. But wow.
Lmao the coincidences part makes so much sense. I see so many fan theories all over the internet, and they make sense but at the same time you wonder how anybody ever thought of them. Turns out a lot of the time they don't haha
I really, really enjoyed that. Portal 2 is such a fantastic game and it was really interesting hearing the evolution of some of the design decisions behind the game. Thanks for uploading!
I'm also a bit sad that we didn't get to see more personality sphere antics. And hearing that they actually wanted to implement that makes me even sadder. BUT, portal 2 is a great game as it is. But please someone make a mod with that core cramped into a tiny space for years. I'll be hilarious.
@MARDLAMOCK There are moments when the writers are talking about pictures in the slideshow, and the cameraman is filming the writers instead of the pictures.
@osuaaron04 That's your opinion. Coop was fun for me and my partner. We even play custom maps which helps when neither of us want to do things on our own. It gives a new dimension of fun when someone else provides the influence of the game.
Seeing the alternative awakening in the "beach" relaxation vault for the first time just now, leads me to believe for a potential start for Portal 3. (Or Portal 2: Episode 1). That big open wheat field at the end of Portal 2 did feel a little suspicious the first play-through of the game, in my opinion. I definitely think Valve has a small setup for a new beginning in the future, if the idea were to ever pop up again.
Heh, they made several references to the cake. One painting shows GLaDOS offering Chell cake, the fake door says GLaDOS emergency shutdown and cake dispensery, they have the cake recepie monitors and the clipboard from Portal 1 in the very beginning showing the cake icon.
The test gun of the Portal Gun is only allowed to put up a portal on white surfaces, however the released version (IG) allowed people to put a portal anywhere.
Next time, IGN, have the camera pointing at the slideshow, and have a picture-in-picture of the panel guys talking. That way, we can see everything at the same time and we can look at what we want.
it does however conflict a secret put in by valve. the most important hint is the turret opera translated, and bring your daughter to work day leftovers. it's solid that chell was a daughter from someone at aperture, and according to the turret opera, chell was GLaDOS's (caroline's) daughter. in the turret opera they sing thing like my dear and run away from science, my child.
Sounds like they have a lot of potential for a Portal 3, definitely with the F-stop mechanic. But I really appreciate how much Valve values and places importance over pacing and comprehension, not many developers have mastered pacing as well as Valve
"So here's video of a thing..." *Cameraman stays fixated on Chet and Eric who are doing nothing but staring at laptops watching the video they just started playing*
*watches as hundreds of people freak out about 5 seconds of an hour long video* We all noticed. Thank you for your wonderful insight. You contributed greatly. *rolls-eyes*
Omg i can believe they where gonna use Richard Ayoade, i had no idea anyone in America even knew of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace or IT crowd (if you haven’t seen these tv shows i suggest you watch them) would have been interesting to see though! Portal ftw More portal please / half life portal story merger!
When Chell was thrown to the surface, people suggested that the outside could be simulated and she's still in the facility. Seeing this in the F-Stop would support that theory.
@emomotorgeek They learned from that mistake. The episodic format has been abandoned by VALVe and most game companies. The only ones still doing it are adventure game developers for small indie projects.) The Half-Life story is mostly Marc Laidlaw's thing. Sure Chet, Erik, and now Jay work on it too, and as they said everyone does everything... but Marc is the captain of that ship.
@TheDirector999 It's not like IGN set up this conference, Valve did. Also, a lot people never saw the interview with Gabe Newell (like myself) so this was very interesting and enjoyable.
Stephen Merchant did an amazing job and this game introduced me too him, now I love the Ricky Gervais Show with him as well as starting to watch more and more of his work. If he had done a subpar job and been replaced with Richard Lord I would have just hated him like people did when they said he was replacing Lord. Same with Ellen, now she's doing Pacific Rim and I find that hilarious. Narrative Games still require great acting and translate to other mediums and boy did Portal do a great job
I wished we could visit the corrupted cores before the finale for like 2 minutes each and see them in the 3 Stooges/Wizard of Oz relationship on their way to Wheatley. (No Aperture Science doesn't have a space program / Wheatley is the worst person to go to for facts / You can have an adventure by escaping the incinerator tube)
They could easily make a prequel to portal!! They have cave Johnson, the F mechanic, glados and that woman that cave talks about a lot in portal 2... They could make a pretty amazing story eg a subject rebelled and managed to escape and gave aperture to glados or something like that
I want some DLC for the rebel spheres. It'd make for great chambers for the co-ops, just five series of levels where GLADOS uses her bots to find these guys and have them either torment the payers or help them. I don't care, just give me the paranoid sphere.
How Portal 2 was really created: VALVE EMPLOYEE 1#: Gabe, Gabe Newell, the fans are demanding for Episode 3 again! GABE NEWELL: Damn it, Left 4 Dead 2 was supposed to buy me 2 years of time! VALVE EMPLOYEE 2#: So Gabe, what are we going to do about the situation? GABE NEWELL: How about that Portal game, that could buy us some time? VALVE EMPLOYEE 1#: But we can't make that, GLADOS is dead and so is Apeture! GABE NEWELL: Fuck story, it's enough to delay episode 3!
Wheatley gets hit by a celestial object, returns 2 earth, helps Chell enter Aperture to find her parents. Let her escape w/ her parents or free her parents from the chamber that the co-op bots put them in, and possibly detain Chell due to GlaDOS' rage, could all depend on weather there is a 3rd portal. DLC pitch right there ^
I'd give him a little break. Less-experienced cameramen, sometimes, get focused on the frame they see and forget to take a look away from it forgetting that the most important stuff might be outside that frame waiting to be found.
"We didn't want to have a cliffhanger ending.."
Yeah, good call.
“I’m not actually gonna go into the details of the mechanic because, uh, hopefully we will revisit that topic some day”
It’s been 7 years :(
I'm super curious about that!
It was shown recently!
Pyroscar Really? When?
AProfessionalMemer Pretty recently. It was shown off in a mini project called ‘exposure’
Play Superliminal. It's basically that mechanic except with no inventory system.
What surprises me the most is how many changes the game went through during development - that the development was so flexible and fluid that almost nothing became as it was initially thought to be, while still maintaining complete coherence in the plot and gameplay is truly astounding!
"Subscribe to IGN if you want Portal 3" Yeah, okay. I didn't know that IGN's subscriber numbers make it possible to make Valve sequels.
15:56
>Here is the actual solution to the puzzle
>Camera trained on two guys silently staring at their laptop while video plays offscreen.
Quality camera work.
Cinema
They're both no longer at Valve :(
Well, Wolpaw sure now is
how did destroying neurotoxin generator with energy pellets looked like ???
well BOOM
I want to see those fake endings
i thought the implosion sign was a trick so i looked away
This is so fascinating. I would absolutely love to work at Valve on games like this.
Too bad Valve doesn't make games like this anymore.
@TheKaelkinator look graphics dont make the game and you have to remember this was the beta or maybe even alpha stage of production. if it was released it would have looked as good as it did now. why would developers waste time and money to polish something that might not be used
I found an ancient comment by a now popular youtuber... weird.
@@boopert3589 hello do you wish to speak of our lord and savior lasagna.
...so when are we getting F-Stop 1 and 2?
F stop alyx
15:57
The guy on the left froze for a few seconds
You come back a year later to point out something insignificant. lol
The mechanical sounds are actually from he's body trying to regain control.
This is an absolutely brilliant talk! I should have seen this the day I finished Portal 2. Thanks TH-cam algorithm
10:42
"Uh oh... Someone cut the cake. I told them to wait for you, but they didn't litsen."
16:00
"So It was kind of cool..."
Cameraman: Nope.
Honestly, this would've been so much better if the camera wasn't pointed at the creators half the time (we don't even get to see a few things, like the early solution to a laser puzzle before lasers). That was really annoying.
+Kassy Chateauneuf The Doom port mortem that split the screen was good
That Skyrim bit really got me :') Oh man...
"This is a really cool thing - lets get rid of it!"
So excited you guys are putting out the puzzle creator soon.
i still want to know what happened to humanity when chell was asleep.
Portal is set in the half life universe, so the combine happened.
so what youre saying is you want half life 3 to come out
Deshara Portal is half life 3 :-p
+Sorual well what i think is that the 1st game takes place at the same time of hl1 and the 2nd game might take place something menney yerars arfter ep 3
2:15 "Well, at Valve, we really like the number 2, and we get to work in what we're interested in so long as it's only twice."
My son and I both really want a Portal 3.
*looks at timer* oh 20mins to go
"That's were we end it and go into Q&A"
F***
One problem. Valve can't count to three.
58:37 Hahahah ! I just love how they react to that question. Hahah !
12:37 radio to the FACE
They explained it in an interview before portal 2's release. It had something to do with gravity. I think you could like fling yourself or flip the room and stuff like that. Not 100% sure.

I agree
Sean Johnson ...or just make a mod called portal prelude. :)
Robbie Martinez Yeah, but I would like it to come from Valve. Just in my opinion.
Well ya. Of course.
I was thinking about exacly same thing. About game called aperture that's some kind of prequel to portal

I would've loved the scene of Chell talking :(
"In the 1980's, bout 20 years before the events of Portal 1"
Holy fucking shit!
@osuaaron04 That's your opinion. Coop was fun for me and my partner. We even play custom maps which helps when neither of us want to do things on our own. It gives a new dimension of fun when someone else provides the influence of the game.

Well this was rather inspiring thnx for putting it up!
Heh, they made several references to the cake. One painting shows GLaDOS offering Chell cake, the fake door says GLaDOS emergency shutdown and cake dispensery, they have the cake recepie monitors and the clipboard from Portal 1 in the very beginning showing the cake icon.

if you look around portal 2 you will see the old portal gun. it was a jackpack with 2 tubes 1 for each hand that shoots portals .
Sounds like they have a lot of potential for a Portal 3, definitely with the F-stop mechanic. But I really appreciate how much Valve values and places importance over pacing and comprehension, not many developers have mastered pacing as well as Valve

This is incredible! Thanks so much for posting it. :)
@ezrs158 The knowledge about the 20x20 box sounds so awesome! :D
And I don't know about the other versions but the french one is absolutly perfect too !
Omg i can believe they where gonna use Richard Ayoade, i had no idea anyone in America even knew of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace or IT crowd (if you haven’t seen these tv shows i suggest you watch them) would have been interesting to see though!
Portal ftw
More portal please / half life portal story merger!
God damn!
Wolpaw's face at 38:38 , 39:44 , 44:34 , 47:20 , 55:13 is just priceless!!! xD
@DiggaDoug492 this was a conference at GDC that only happened within the last week or so. Portal 2 was not out at this time last year i think as well.
I absolutely love both Portal games and am finding this pretty interesting.
At about 34:26, how can they say it sucked?! I just got goosebumps when she said yes!
"After the Orange Box, we all wanted to make a Portal game"
WHAT ABOUT EPISODE 3, SAD FACE :(
I'm surprised, there was no questions about episode three and the borealis.
When Chell was thrown to the surface, people suggested that the outside could be simulated and she's still in the facility. Seeing this in the F-Stop would support that theory.
Do assignment, watch fight club, or watch an hour long interview about a game I've beaten over a dozen times.
Damn you valve!!!!!!!
THE CAKE ISN'T A LIE. 11:56 (on the left side)
Even ideas that Valve rejected would have been award winning.
@emomotorgeek They learned from that mistake.
The episodic format has been abandoned by VALVe and most game companies. The only ones still doing it are adventure game developers for small indie projects.)
The Half-Life story is mostly Marc Laidlaw's thing. Sure Chet, Erik, and now Jay work on it too, and as they said everyone does everything... but Marc is the captain of that ship.

"So here is the actual solution" -cameraman falls asleap and shows nothing-
it is a youtube bug that happens sometimes, just refresh the page and skip back to 18:33 and you choud be fine
I still prefer to think suddenly she'll look to the right and see a combine citadel.
This makes me want to play Portal 2 again.
The test intro reminds me of a dark ride at Disneyland.
Stephen Merchant did an amazing job and this game introduced me too him, now I love the Ricky Gervais Show with him as well as starting to watch more and more of his work. If he had done a subpar job and been replaced with Richard Lord I would have just hated him like people did when they said he was replacing Lord. some of the ideas here are amazing x_x

(No Aperture Science doesn't have a space program / Wheatley is the worst person to go to for facts / You can have an adventure by escaping the incinerator tube)
Hot dam that was a great presentation.
the logical reason for the new elevators is because aperture probably evolved after aperture was destroyed because glados wasn't only killing people
I kinda wish they'd left the two minute ending in, that sounds hilarious.
They could easily make a prequel to portal!! They have cave Johnson, the F mechanic, glados and that woman that cave talks about a lot in portal 2... They could make a pretty amazing story eg a subject rebelled and managed to escape and gave aperture to glados or something like that
Chell speaking would have been awesome but real talk; nothing beats going to SPAACE!
I JUST read about the early versions of Portal 2 like 2 days ago!!!
I want some DLC for the rebel spheres. It'd make for great chambers for the co-ops, just five series of levels where GLADOS uses her bots to find these guys and have them either torment the payers or help them. I don't care, just give me the paranoid sphere.
i would really love to see the original portal 2
12:19 the corrupted cores were gona be characters you meet thru the game like Wheatley
@FichSKillroeye Chell's dad is dead, and Chell's mother is GlaDos but she had her memory wiped so she can't remembering being human.
if they wanted people to play the single player first why not make the co-op unlockable by playing all of the single player
Wish they'd make a non-canon prequel with Morgan Freeman sphere and F-stop.
How Portal 2 was really created:
VALVE EMPLOYEE 1#: Gabe, Gabe Newell, the fans are demanding for Episode 3 again!
GABE NEWELL: Damn it, Left 4 Dead 2 was supposed to buy me 2 years of time!
VALVE EMPLOYEE 2#: So Gabe, what are we going to do about the situation?

VALVE EMPLOYEE 1#: But we can't make that, GLADOS is dead and so is Apeture!
GABE NEWELL: Fuck story, it's enough to delay episode 3!
@twizlers12 The ratman is fairly well explained in the comics, which I don't believe they wrote.
7:51
With a great beard, comes a great responsibility.
DLC pitch right there ^
@BagetaMovies SPAAAAACE
it's in development, it's only a matter of time.
I'd give him a little break. Less-experienced cameramen, sometimes, get focused on the frame they see and forget to take a look away from it forgetting that the most important stuff might be outside that frame waiting to be found.
Entertainingly, my girlfriend thought the end was the fire part too :P
Man the ideas that VALVe throws out of their own games are better than most finished games.
is it bad that I want f-stop?
I am sad that I left Digipen in the first year from homesickness.
Many thanks for the upload, did you record the TF2 one? :)
11:57 YOU CANT HIDE FROM ME!
Portal there, portal under him over there... oh, I'm sorry, you couldn't dodge that?
11:57 - The cake is real!
@twizlers12 They did actually, indirectly.
TURN THE FRIGGIN CAMERA TO THE SLIDE SHOW!!!!!!!!!!
skiping to 59:25. done watching the video. WIN
