One in a series of twelve films in which the great French mime Marcel Marceau performs some works from his repertoire. In his introduction Marceau states that to him this pantomime has different meanings. He explains that the maskmaker represents humanity and has all the faces humanity can possess. He also suggests that while many people hide behind masks, others use them to create symbols of life and says that the last mask will reveal man in his only and real moment of truth. As the performer puts on mask after mask, he finds to his horror that one of them is stuck.

it is not the moment that he reveals his true face that is the most stunning, but that a mask that could be seen as the most ecstatic, the most joyful, could, by turns, transform before our eyes into one of exhaustion, of fear, of horror, of that which is an antithesis of what it seeks to project. that is the moment, for me, which sings out louder than any other gesture.

I first saw Marceau perform this at Sadler's Wells theatre, London when I was about 12, and I have never forgotten it. I was just amazed at the performance at the time and watching it again now, nearly 50 years later, I'm still captivated by this stunning piece of work. A genuine piece of theatrical creativity and history

There was nobody like him, before or since. He was a genius and told the story of man in the most universal language possible but to such a degree of humanitarian perfection and poignancy as to bring everyone to tears. Everyone. And Laughter. He reduced the masks of comedy and tragedy to the essentials but with great art and seriousness and joy. Today's mimes are merely an annoyance and have no idea what to do. He invented it and it died with him

We wear the mask that grins and lies. It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes. This debt we pay in human guile. With torn and bleeding hearts we smile.
Why should the world be over wise, in counting all our tears and sighs. Neigh let them only see us while we wear the mask.

There is! Check out Resistance (2020) starring Jessie Eisenberg as Marcel Marceau. It is based on his life, and focusses on how Marcel Marceau saved the lives of hundreds of children during WWII by using his mime skills to keep them quiet while he helped to hide them from the Nazis. A little known fact about a remarkable man's life.

Marcel Marceau was a Jewish memeber of the French Resistance in World War ll. His father was killed in Auschwitz. The first time he used mime was after France was invaded, in order to keep orphaned Jewish children quiet while he helped them escape to neutral Switzerland. After the War he became friends with Michael Jackson, who said he would use some of his techniques in his dance steps.
